Album Description

Veteran metal warriors ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY return to the international arena armed with new vocalist Kyle Thomas (ex- EXHORDER, FLOODGATE) and the devastating new album Open Fire. Open Fire's 11 song charge sees ATP honed into a leaner, meaner, and wholly more-metallic killing machine. Tracks like Words of the Dying Man, Valor, Whiskey War and None Shall Return impact with the subtlety of a hammer to the head and stay embedded there long after. Spearheaded by Thomas' powerful battle cries and the burning fret-work of guitar-hero-in-the-making Ryan Lake, Open Fire is undeniably ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY's masterwork and follows through on their promise of delivering the finest metal this side of the hard rock classics.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best metal of 2007.......2007-07-16

This is my favorite rock album of 2007 (and there's a lot of stiff competition). Probably my favorite in years. It's like when Star Wars came out, there was no question as to whether it was the best movie of the year -- no matter what came after in 77, Star Wars was THE movie. Open Fire is THE album.

Just try not screaming along to "the suuuun, the SUUUUN!" on "the beggar" while walking down the street to work lost in your headphones. It's impossible.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent metal for fans of real metal........2007-05-02

First of all, the musicianship on this album is excellent. Catchy riffs and great drumming are heard all throughout this album. The vocals could be a little better but for this type of music they fit well. From what I understand the band is supposed to be metal with a Southern edge but I don't really hear the Southern elements. It's great music either way. The bottom line is that if you like real metal bands that don't bow to the pressures of mainstream acceptance, then you'll probably enjoy this album. If your favorite bands are Wolfmother and other MTV tailored bands then you might be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Not my thing.......2007-04-03

I have read rave reviews for this album and heard excellent things about AT in general but I didn't enjoy this. I guess it just isn't my thing.
On the sticker on the CD it says something like "For fans of Down, COC, Soundgarden, Wolfmother..."
It shoulda said "For fans of lame early '80's metal, bad songs, no originality and lyrics so cheesy they come in a squeezable tube."

If it's your thing then fine. Just not mine.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-03-16

Pretty good outing. Had to wait almost 3 years for it though. Not worth the wait, Fulton Hill is a better outing by these guys.

4 out of 5 stars axe weilding - blistering balls to the wall rock and roll!.......2007-03-16

Alabama Thunderpussy returns with a new vocalist. At first I was a little concerned that this album would be a let down and would not be a marked improvement over past efforts, including the timeless Constellation and Staring at the Divine. But Kyle Thomas simply adds more power, more emotional intensity and just plain opens the nozel and stokes the flames to unheard of heights. Ryan Lake and Erik Larson provide enough inspirational riffage and earth shattering solo work that my head hasn't stopped bouncing to some of the catchiest budweiser pounding, mug rasing mastery that the Thunder provides on this masterwork. Welcome to Valhalla mortals. Be thankful you are welcome amongst these gods of metal as they shake the very foundations of your soul.

4 out of 5 stars Very Much a Classic.......2007-06-29

One of the most romantic recordings of the twentieth century. If you are interested in learning what the big deal was about almost fifty years ago, I recommend that you pick this one up. Mathis' interpretation of "Embraceable You" alone is worth the price of this album.

"Open Fire, Two Guitars" showcases Mathis at the peak of his powers. Mathis's voice, a sensitive and often fragile instrument, is put to excellent use here; strong and clear and direct, he has rarely sounded this impeccable since, which is saying something, given his steller fifty plus year career.

4 out of 5 stars Open Fire, Two Guitars.......2007-01-20

My wife and I enjoyed "Open Fire, Two Guitars". Giving it 4 stars is short of excellent. He sounded great and I remember it from when I first listened to it with friends. We actually listened to it while we drank martinis over an open fire place during my U.S. Foreign Service years in the 1960s. I would highly recommend it to any Johnny Mathis fans. It's a great C.D. for people in love, regardless of their ages.

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhh That Voice...Sighhh.......2006-09-01

Sighhhh....If by the end of the first two songs, you haven't set that romantic mood your looking for, I just don't know what to tell ya. By the end of this gorgeous 45 minute Johnny Mathis Album "Open Fire, Two Guitars",you should be completely in love! The selections are perfect for the occasion, the music exquisite yet simple, and the voice...ahhh that voice. With, as the title tells you, only 2 acoustic guitars as accompaniment (performed beautifully by Tony Mottola and Al Caiola), with a little bass for rhythm, Johnny's silky tone is the instrument that is in total command of your listening pleasure.

Mathis takes some grand old standards and adds a wonderful feeling to each and every one. A feeling that may be described as dreamy, sweet, tender, and lovely. Included are "Open Fire","Bye,Bye Blackbird", "In The Still Of The Night","Embraceable You","I'll Be seeing You", "Tenderly", "When I fall In Love", "I Concentrate On You","Please Be Kind", "You'll Never Know", "I'm Just a Boy In Love", and "My Funny Valentine". 12 tracks all a good enough length to have a nice slow dance or linger in front of that open fire. They range from 2:30 to 4:30.

The CD is excellent. It is obvious that this album was produced with much love and attention. These old songs sound crisp and clear.

Fall in love once again to the sounds of Johnny Mathis....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars A romantic music essential........2006-03-17

This CD is a sure bet for setting the mood for a romantic candlelight dinner for two. Johnny was truly at his vocal and artistic peak when this timeless album was recorded and issued. While today universally recognized as one of the greatest romantic music albums ever recorded, it was not (strangely) one of his biggest sellers back in 1959-60. The best thing about this wonderful CD reissue is that Sony Legacy did a magnificent remastering job here. A classic to forever enjoy and cherish.

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah Chin

this cd is pure magic...almost 20 great christmas songs on one cd sung by the voice of an angel herself..there may be a few mixed reviews by some people who must be opera voice teachers because there is nothing wrong with this cd...it is flawless....charlotte's soaring vocals, the beautiful orchestra and background singers, the whole cd has the christmas feel to it..."o come all ye faithfull" has to be heard to be believed...it is breathtaking...i love charlottes take on "winter wonderland" and "ding dong merrily on high" ..made me want to go dance in the snow or something.....she hits every note beautifully..buy this cd...i bought it back in 2000 and have listened to it at every Christmastime since or Christmas doesnt feel the same.

Charlotte Church has done it again! She is extremely talented. Even if she was 25 when she put this out, she'd be amazing. But she was only 14-15 years old when she recorded this! Beautiful. This album has great choral accompaniments and fabulous orchestra arrangements. It is a little on the high side in certain songs, but it still sounds amazing. I love her voice.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sets the tone for what Christmas albums should sound like, and Joy to the World upholds their exacting standard of excellence. Re-released from two concerts recorded in 1970 and 1977 and repacked with three bonus tracks, this collection is as perfect as it gets, thanks to pristine production, gorgeous vocal arrangements, and stately accompaniment by the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. This record will set the mood for reveling, both with more contemporary carols, like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song," and sacred numbers, such as Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" and "O Holy Night." Joy to the World qualifies as an essential yuletide album. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Christmas Classic.......2003-12-08

I'm a lover of traditional Christmas music and I've acquired about 20 CDs of it. There's nothing my family likes better in December than putting on some good Christmas music and getting in the mood for the season, hearing once again the old favorites you've known since childhood. Of all the Christmas music CDs I've tried, I have two desert-island favorites, the two I always reach for first. This is one of them. I think it's one of the greatest recordings of traditional Christmas music ever made. The arrangements (by Arthur Harris) are joyous, beautiful, and soul-stirring; the performances are heartfelt and magnificent. If you can listen to this CD and not feel filled by the Christmas spirit, you must be (a) named Ebeneezer Scrooge, or (b) deaf. This one is a timeless Christmas classic, not to be missed. Warmest recommendation.

I love all the Bob River's CD's but I think the "Chipmunk song" is one of my all time favorites. I used to watch the "Chipmunks" on TV when I was a kid but I used to think their Christmas album was annoying. Well, Bob Rivers hits the mark with his parody of the Chipmunks. He captures them in all their annoying glory. Thanks Bob!

My kids and I love this cd, having been introduced to it by one of our local radio stations.

Where we live we're surrounded by the far-right Christian republicans who have signs on their lawns saying things like, "Jesus is the reason for the season," so to be able to laugh with this cd, despite the guilt-inducing, holier-than-thou contest around us, is quite cathartic!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Experimental Shredding.......2004-11-26

By 1978, Ronnie Montrose had completed stints with the Edgar Winter Group [Slow Ride, Frankenstein] and his own band Montrose, with Sammy Hagar [that self-titled first album is one of the best heavy metal albums in the history of rock]. He had also done studio work with a variety of people.

When Open Fire first appeared, many fans considered it a total failure because it was so much different than anything Montrose had produced before. Open-minded fans were more forgiving, regarding the album as an either an interesting experiment or an amusing indulgence.

To put this album into its proper perspective, you need to recall the artistic mood of the time. In the late Seventies, a lot of recording artists were experimenting with elements of rock, jazz and classical. Some of the notable names include Miles Davis, Jeff Beck, Santana, Steely Dan, Jean Luc Ponty, Pat Metheny, Yes and others, including Ronnie Montrose on this album.

Some of the songs on Open Fire [Town Without Pity, Heads Up, Rocky Road] have a decidedly rock flavor and are precursors to the kind of music that would later be produced by people like Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Marc Bonilla and others. Other songs [My Little Mystery, Leo Rising] have more in common with the kind of stuff that would later be produced by artists like William Ackerman. No Beginning/No End successfully combines both approaches.

This is a terrific album in its own right. The playing is superb and the melodies are outstanding. If there's a problem, it's a tendency to overdo the orchestration and layering to the point that it sometimes gets in the way of the guitar. Still, this was a worthy piece of instrumental art rock that helped pave the way for others.

2 out of 5 stars Stick with Gamma..........2003-01-28

Not crazy about this one. Too much orchestration that makes it sound like a Hollywood soundtrack. Plus I'd rather hear Gene Pitney belt out 'Town Without Pity' than the Montrose sing-along on here. Too cheesy for my tastes...

If you really want to hear Montrose SMOKE, then get the Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 CDs that Wounded Bird has also recently reissued. You'd do a lot better with these two LPs that RM recorded for Elektra back in '79 and '80.

5 out of 5 stars Found It!.......2002-10-05

I gave the CD the high rating because I've been searching for this for *years*. In the late '70s I remember the distinct sound of the Town Without Pity track and I thought I remembered it being Montrose... but, every now & then, I'd look for it and just could not find it. Today I heard the Gene Pitney original and was determined to search again. And finally found it!

5 out of 5 stars Phil.......2001-07-19

This is the best of 70's rock guitar! the track of "Town Without Pity" is the best of the best. You really need to hear it!

5 out of 5 stars * Open Fire *.......2000-09-14

Cool album, good tunes, stunning fret work by guit legend Ronnie Montrose. Open Fire is one of his soloist stuff. The powerful album 'Montrose' ('73) is my personal favorite, imagine Montrose with Samy Haggar, Bill Church and Dennis Carmassi, this is it!!!

I see - and hear! - Open Fire as a somewhat more "experimental" recording. Believe me, this album is on the verge of greatness. It isn't the raw, near Heavy, Rock music of the first or the second, Paper Money, yet Open Fire does capture the promised burst of flame it's title would suggest. Good rocking muse, mostly instrumental, that does concentrate on the superb effort of the musicians. Produced by no one else than Edgar Winter. §

5 out of 5 stars The Young Lions.......2007-03-16

The prelude to greatness... before the elements went on to glorious heights, there were already a tight, progressive, positive band, with two powerhouse vocalists. One thing that is not mentioned much when commentary is made about the best band of the 70s is that they celebrated their African roots without a second thought.

Tracks like Mighty Mighty, Drum Song, Caribou, along with the spiritual overtones of songs like devotion exuded not only an awareness on their part of who they were, but they celebrated it without regard. This progressiveness continued up into the 80s and after a brief hiatus, continued into the 90s and recently with the wonderful release 'Illumination'.

Their legacy needs to be preserved by our young and held up as an example of what great music should be modeled after. Now with all that said, this album/CD is a delight to listen to even today. Thank God these old gems were preserved! Real music has become a novelty today.
Like Mr. White says, this music is Eternal.

5 out of 5 stars Baddest Band in the Land.......2005-10-22

I was a Teenager when this Album was released on "Vinyl" (for those of you from the CD Age ask your Grandparents). Back then I loved every Song on the Album, and that love stands pat today as Earth, Wind & Fire's Music from those days Song just as Beautiful Today as it did then, and there'll never be another Band like them. I have every E.W.F. Album made in the 70"s on CD now. Some of the best purchases I ever made.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT WE HAVE IS A BRAND NEW SOUND!.......2004-09-08

Whoa! Even with the enlightening evolution of EW&F's fourth release, Head To The Sky, nobody could have seen this coming. This album is nothing short of bold and brilliant. It is an all-out assault on several musical genres, as well as the full emergence of a newly refined and crystalized EW&F sound.

"Mighty Mighty" is an eyebrow-raising funk experience in under 3 minutes, that boldly uplifts those of African descent, completes with fierce guitar licks, a snaky bassline, and confident vocals that all overflow with attitude. I hope that soundproof booth wasn't made of glass, because Phillip Bailey certainly would have shattered it. Other immediate standouts are the arm-waving anthem "Devotion", the much too funky "Kalimba Story" and the wordless "Drum Song" and "Caribou". You must love "Tee Nine Chee Bit" for it's lowdown Ohio Players-like feel. An album like this could have very easily taken a wrong turn, but the fact is that this one doesn't. It is random perfection. The only possible thing you could criticize is the somewhat lazy sounding vocals on "Caribou", and still this is overshadowed by the fact that you can't get this sound anywhere else.

This album crosses pop, funk, gospel, jazz, R&B and African music barriers full-stride without missing a step. It's also saturated with musical, vocal, spiritual and commercial prowess without being preachy. How can you even call yourself an Earth, Wind & Fire fan without owning this musical goldmine???!!! Even the bonus tracks are really bonus. Get it while the gettin' is good, my mellow.

5 out of 5 stars It sounds like they had fun recording this one!.......2003-10-31

Of course Earth Wind and Fire have tons of hits, spanning a couple decades, but the gems on this release are the non-single tracks. While both hits "Mighty Mighty" and "Devotion" are great, this CD is simply full of music from beginning to end that is funky, soulful, and fun. The title track "Open Our Eyes" is a wonderful gospel song, and the minor hit "Feeling Blue" is a great ballad which you may remember, but the highlights are the added tracks including the funky "Fair But So Uncool" and the gospel inspired soul in "Ain't No Harm to Moan". You will love the improvised jamming in "Drum Song" and the African inspired "Kalimba Story".

This is a wonderful collection of music and you can tell they had a lot of fun recording it. The music sounds fresh and alive, which is remarkable considering it has been nearly 30 years since it was recorded. A great and underrated release from one of the most talented recording groups of all time.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST VIENNA BOYS CHOIR CHRISTMAS MUSIC!!.......2005-06-01

This wonderful collection of Christmas music is especially good! Many pieces are very well known standards, and have been rewritten in ways that keep the music fresh, interesting and new! Every holiday season (and even throughout the year) this CD is played by our family quite a bit! [I may be a little biased, since my 12 year old son from Cincinnati, OH is one of the boys singing in most of the songs!] It is awesome!!

3 out of 5 stars Amazing skills, yet too busy for listening enjoyment.......2006-12-13

I can't believe how well John Bayless has mastered the piano. This is very obvious from the first song that you ever hear him play. I'd really like to watch him play in concert. However, the songs on this album are too much work for me to listen to. The music is so busy that I can hardly concentrate on the melody and it hardly gives me the peace I expect from traditional Christmas music. Some of my favorites for this category are Jim Brickman, David Huntsinger, and Tim Janis.

5 out of 5 stars John Bayless Christmas Rhapsody.......2006-02-13

Christmas Rhapsody has quickly become one of our all time favorite Chistmas CDs. We love it so much that it is February 10th and we are still listening to it.

John Bayless is the best concert pianist in the world. This album shows his genuis. Perfect music to listen to any time of the year.
This is the best Christmas album on the market.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of the season.......2004-12-31

This is the holiday music I have listened to throughout the season, and it is so beautiful I cannot bear to put it away yet. I love Bayless's work at any time, and these arrangements simply take my breath away. His blending of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with "Going Home" from the New World Symphony is particulary poignant. And his signature "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring/Amazing Grace" is seasonless and timeless. Christmas is over, but get this anyway; it's wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Best Piano Christmas CD ever!.......2004-12-15

David Lanz? Jim Brickman? John Tesh? Move over guys... John Bayless has done what no others could... Taken the xmas classics to a new level of musical enjoyment! By combining the songs together, and making them so rich and full of life, this will be my favorite Christmas CD for a looooooooooong time.

Like his good friend Esquivel, Henry Mancini mixed some mean orchestral Christmas cocktails. But where Esquivel was possessed by wackiness and whimsy, Mancini played things fairly straight and still managed to create a sound that defined his career and an era. Sadly, the selections here are pedestrian, even by the well-trodden holiday boulevard standards. "White Christmas," "The Little Drummer Boy," and "The Christmas Song" all benefit nonetheless from Mancini's genius for timing and dynamics. Even the mundane "Frosty the Snowman" gets some new life breathed into him thanks to Mancini's arrangement, and "Carols for Another Christmas" is a good example of Mancini's hip restraint. Merry Mancini Christmas, while not the maestro at his best, still imparts some of that madcap, martini-era holiday spirit as only Mancini knew. --Steve Gdula

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the effort.......2007-01-27

I just love Christmas music and I love Mancini's Pink Panther and others. I thought this might be a good addition to my collection and it turned out to be a dud. Nothing special at all.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2006-02-23

This is the Christmas album you are always saying "who is this" when listening on the radio. Perfect for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Christmas as you remember it.......2005-10-04

This album is for all those baby boomers out there who grew up listening to the great Mancini. Someone said this album was pedestrian. They couldn't have been farther from the truth! This will rekindle childhood memories of Christmas like it used to be. Pull up a chair by the fire, grab that warm apple cider, turn the Christmas lights on and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Mancini is Magical.......2004-12-15

I come from a very large family and since the mid-sixties when my parents bought it we'd play this album during the holidays. We played it until you could hardly hear some of the songs without the crackling and skipping the LP's were notorious for. By the time it was totally inaudible the LP wasn't being made any longer. We were all crushed because our Christmas mainstay album was gone. (Particularly because we lost both parents some years ago within 2 months of each other and we always listened as a family to this album.) When the CD came out we were overjoyed to say the least. I ALWAYS cry as do all of us in my family when "Carol for Another Christmas" plays because it holds such dear memories of my parents listening to us massacre that song on our instruments EVERY SINGLE CHRISTMAS!!! But they always swore we played beautifully.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2002-07-13

Tasteful, traditional orchestral Christmas music. More importantly, "Carol for Another Christmas" may be the most beautiful Christmas composition of the 20th Century.
