Solid .......2007-03-31
The idea behind Dozer is to combine heaviness, as in a bulldozer, with trippiness, as in dozing off into a dreamlike state. Both sets of imagery apply to this album. Dozer's arrangement is basically very, very thick fuzz, which both accentuates the heaviness of the groove and gives the listener the sense of being sensorily impaired. In fact, the fuzz is so thick that you usually can't distinguish individual basslines as often as you can with other bands covering the same general territory, such as Kyuss and Lowrider. The tone is also a little more laid back and a little less cathartic. In other words, Dozer places more emphasis on the "stoner" aspect of the "stoner metal" equation. And they succeed in creating some nice grooves with this formula. Occassionally, the lyrics fall victim to the Swedish-guy-trying-to-write-in-English syndrome, as in the triumphant declaration, "Oh yeah, we're going to f--- this up, once again!" What!?!? Frederik is one of the few stoner metal frontmen who can sing competently, and he does a good job of delivering these lines, but some still fall flat.
If you're a stoner metal junkie like me, you should get this, although it isn't one of the staples of the genre and Kyuss, Lowrider, Los Natas, 35007, Electric Wizard, Hermano, and so forth, are both easier to collect and more essential.
a classic stoner rock album.......2001-09-28
this album just does one thing and that is rock.lightyears ahead is an amazing song with a very catchy corus. riding the machine is the classic stoner rock epic along with high roller. if you like anything stoner rock i recomend this album this is near kyuss perfection.
Not bad...not bad at all...(not incredible either).......2000-12-19
in my never ending quest to find some more rock that plows you into the ground, dozer was an obvious choice when i heard them compared to Kyuss. after listening to the cd, i must say that dozer does a good job trying to imitate the fathers of stoner rock, but not an incredible one.
really, i would give this cd 3.5 stars, but it's not available. they get down with earth shattering guitar riffs, and hooks, from track one, and don't let up until the cd is over. i must say, they really do try to imitate kyuss. so they lose points for originality. they also lose points for not having that "special something" that made kyuss songs like a drug.
but dozer does get points for writing pretty damn good songs, and making a valiant attempt at really rocking out. this cd is good. i really enjoy listening to it right through, as there are no "singles", but rather just a feel to the whole album.
what does it all come down to? well, get this cd if you already own some more important 'stoner' rock, and crave another good, hard groovin' cd to add to your ranks. but if you don't own kuyss' sky valley and blues for the red sun, you better get them first. also, check out Unida's "coping with the urban coyote" if you want a great cd in the genre. once you get the best, then get the rest. the cd is good, but certainly not essential. remember: stoner rock is easily imitated, and therefore there is plenty of good stoner rock that certainly isn't great stoner rock, usually because lack of originality. if i never owned kyuss, i'd like this cd more. but since i've heard the best, dozer's attempt to imitate doesn't stand up. but overall, you know what? i don't care. i can't listen to only 5 stoner rock albums all the time, and you need some variety. when you need to beef up the collection, pick this up.
