Got an LP not a CD.......2007-07-30

Amazon, create a way to say an item is an LP not a CD, I thought it was a CD when I bought it and got the LP instead. So I do not recommend it just based on that, sure wish I could listen to it.

Back Home Again - John Denver.......2007-03-29

I remember having this LP Album in the 70's and was very happy to have it on CD with some of my very favorite John Denver songs - especially the song "Matthew", which I haven't been able to find on other John Denver CD's. This music brings back lots of good memories.

I'd be still happy with my vinyl copy still if it weren't so scratchy in places. The remastering sounds fresh as the day it was recorded so I'm happy with the cd. It captures a wonderful period in John's career. If you're in any doubt about this one allay your fears as it's John at his country mode best. Although having said that you can't beat John's live work. That's where he really shined! You're still the greatest John!

My mom had this album on vinyl. She later bought it on cassette and she played it in the car all the time. Later I bought my own copy on tape. I wore that out during college and later bought the CD.

Every song on this album is a classic and if you are looking for an album to play while driving along on a rainy day you can stop looking right now.

You can feel the emotion poured into ever lyric. Every song is as sincere as you can get.

I love this album and I'll never be without a copy!

I love this album. My mom and I used to listen to it on 8-track in the late 70's and it's exactly like I remembered it. The best thing...the lyrics! I've been trying to figure out what was in Grandma's Feather Bed for 20 years.

It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10

This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).

The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.

Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.

I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.

If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."

If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.

I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.

I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.

Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..

I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour

but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..

An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17

Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.

In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.

Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.

I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.

This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

The team of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick came up with only six shows--but what shows! In addition to the phenomenally successful Fiddler on the Roof, aficionados usually gush about 1963's She Loves Me and 1959's Fiorello!. The latter turned a not particularly appetizing topic--the years leading to Fiorello LaGuardia's election as mayor of New York--into a great musical. (It even won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the third musical to do so.) Harnick and Bock's versatility was in evidence as they wrote numbers in every Broadway style: novelty, ballad (about sweatshops), duet (the absurdly catchy and funny "Marie's Law"), and, of course, a rousing number that doesn't really fit anywhere but is so good that it simply must be included (Eileen Rodgers's "Gentleman Jimmy"). Fiorello is a very dark comedy about the corrupt back-room politics, croneyism, and skulduggery surrounding Fiorello laGuardia's political career. Oh, and there's a romance thrown in. "Politics and Poker" in particular has a timely poignancy in light of the runup to the 2008 elections with Clinton, Obama, and -um - whoever the heck else is on the Democrat wanna-be list. I have to think there are some pretty stark parallels here. But then, that's what this timeless, delightful sleeper of an operetta is all about.

A new York-centric non-hit .......2006-11-15

This never rose to the level of a 'hit'. At this time (2006) it is dated
technically and artisticly. It didn't win in '59, there is little hope that it will be remembered fondly in '06.
In the end I bought it for archival purposes only and I'm being kind.

Laguardia isn't just an airport.......2006-08-07

Fiorello! was basically a play about New York City's great mayor, Fiorello Laguardia, that was turned into a musical by having an overture and 14 songs. Long ago, back in the late 1950s, I saw it as a child and really liked it - I've always wondered what it would be like to hear it again. Well, it is nothing less than spectacular! It has the best song about politcal corruption (!) ever written, Little Tin Box; a great song about a broken date, Marie's Law; a lyrical paean to back-room politics, Politics and Poker; and 11 others, all equally good (in fact, there's not a single dud in the score - as you would expect since it was written by the writers who did Fiddler on the Roof). The voices are great, the lyrics are all to the point, the music is unforgettable, and, for all those who don't know the story, the disc notes are really helpful. Maybe this is politcs seen through rose-tinted glasses, but it's wonderful to hear!

a classic, underrated Broadway gem.......2003-11-04

FIORELLO! is a lovely, ahead-of-its-time musical, based on the career of New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia. It starred Tom Bosley as La Guardia with a dream cast including Ellen Hanley, Pat Stanley and Eileen Rodgers.

The score, an early collaboration from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (SHE LOVES ME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) is very strong, and includes several show-pieces like "Politics and Poker", "Little Tin Box" and "On the Side of the Angels".

Ellen Hanley (who had previously been criminally under-used as Polly Bergen's understudy in FIRST IMPRESSIONS) glows in the role of feisty Thea, the sweatshop workers' leader. She has two of the score's best ballads, "'Til Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love".

Pat Stanley (who earned a Tony for her performance in the disastrous GOLDILOCKS) gets the cute number "I Love a Cop". Eileen Rodgers (who later starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES) sings the showstopping "Gentleman Jimmy", a manic flapper tune. FIORELLO! is a fantastic show in that it has no less than 3 strong female roles.

For those who only started following Tom Bosley's career during his 'Happy Days', the fact that he was a top-drawer musical theater talent will come as a big surprise. Bosley played the entire run of 795 performances. Bosley later made many more successful Broadway appearances including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and (as of this review's writing) a triumphant stint in the Sam Mendes revival of CABARET.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

During the '80s, New Edition reigned as the biggest and best boy R&B group. Influenced by the Jackson 5, New Edition influenced New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men, who took their name from a New Edition song. After a "hiatus" of nearly 8 years, the Boston-based act reunited in 1987, with all of the original members, most notably the first to go solo, Bobby Brown. With big name producers (Puffy Combs, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, etc.) in tow, Home Again has some seriously great moments, especially on the cuts that Jam and Lewis cook up. But as with most reunions, Home Again was proof that you can't fully return to your past. While the voices were fine, the magic wasn't always there. --Amy Linden

Its good to be Home Again.......2006-12-19

And even better to have a group like New Edition still doing their thing together despite all of the things going on with other groups. They've been in the music business for more years than i can count and the guys still know how to bring it home in their songs. From the first song "Oh Yeah, It Feels So Good" we have all the members explaining to everyone how great it is to be back and doing what they love. Ronnie has a significant part in this song with two parts rapping and singing as well as Mike along with Ricky, Bobby and Johnny on the singing. On "Hit Me Off" one of several hits off the album, the guys come back with a more hip hop flavored song taking a sample from the Black Moon song "I Got Cha Opin" and using it well with rap verses by Ronnie and Ricky on this one as well with Ricky, Bobby, Johnny and Ralph coming in as well. Then comes "You Don't Have to Worry" written by P. Diddy, Heavy D and the boys from 112. They give NE a different feel on this song and they work it well also contains a sample from the James Brown song "Your Love" vocals by Bobby and rap by Ronnie and Mike. "Tighten It Up" is worked on nicely by Jermaine Dupri also written by him along with Ricky Bell and a rap verse by Ronnie and Mike with vocals by Bobby, Ricky and Ralph. "Shop Around" is basically about a guy wanting to go have a look around when it comes to getting with a woman and its cool. because they handle the song well written again by JD along with Johnny, Ralph and Michael with vocals by Johnny, Ralph, Ricky and Bobby. "Hear Me Out" is a slow burner about him apologizing for hurting the woman that he's with because of what he did. Its written by Dinky Bingham, Geo Washington and Mike Bivins with vocals by Mike (spoken), Ricky, Johnny, Bobby and Ralph.

"Something About You" is a cool song (although not really one of my favs on the album) but its written by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis with Lead vocals by Ralph and Bobby also contains a sample from Edie Brickell's song "What I Am" with vocals by Ralph. "Try Again" is more uptempo song than previous efforts and i find myself enjoying more each time i listen to it. Has a sample from the Slick Rick song "Lick the Balls" and written by P. Diddy, Chucky Thompson and Harvey Frierson. Its about wanting to restart a relationship with someone you've moved on from in the past with vocals by Bobby, Ricky and Ralph. "How Do Like Your Love Served" asks the upfront question of how do you want to be pleased that's how i took it and it's written by Gerald Levert and Edwin Nicholas. Its another strong slow jam for me from the guys vocals by Ronnie (spoken), Ricky, Johnny and Ralph. Then comes one of my favorite New Edition songs since "Can You Stand the Rain". "One More Day" we all know what the song is about. its wanting to spend another moment with that special someone that you don't want to leave. Its written rather nicely by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (once again) and Lead Vocals by Ricky along with Ralph as well. The video is nice as well nothing over the top or anything. "I'm Still In Love With You" another slow song that is right in there with other of my favorite songs. Written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis we have Ricky and Ralph handling the lead vocal reins on this song as well with great results. Its just about a person being in love with someone despite them not being together and that those feelings won't fade away no matter how much time passes by.

I'm not really big on Interludes on albums for the most part they do nothing for me. But "Thank You (The JG Interlude)" is done well and its all handled with class and precision by Johnny Gill (one more reason why New Edition is and will always be one of the best groups out there). He's giving thanks for all the blessings and rewards that he and the group have achieved together over the years. the last song "Home Again" does just that bringing everything home and back to where it started for the group it shows how they've grown over the years and continue to even now vocals by Ralph, Bobby, Johnny, Ricky and Mike (spoken).

Its a fitting end song to altogether great CD from my favorite group out there. Nuff respect, New Edition knows how to get done and does it with precision regardless of what the brief amazon review says.

"Home Again" is classic NE material.

Strong Album From A Legendary Group.......2006-12-04

I remember the first time I heard this album when it came out 10 years ago, listening to it now after I haven't listened to it for a while brings back some great memories, I was a young man at the time and I enjoyed the rhythms of the songs but really these songs have a deeper meaning to me now that I'm more grown and going through relationships, songs like "How Do You Like Your Love Served?", "I'm Still In Love With You", "Shop Around", and "Home Again" have so much soul to them, you got all the members of New Edition, Ronnie, Bobby, Ralph, Ricky, Mike, and Johnny on here that got so much chemistry together throughout this album, and with production from Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Puffy Daddy(now known as Diddy), Heavy D(yes he's a hell of a producer too besides a great rapper, he produced on Beanie Siegel's last big hit if I'm not mistaken), and now the late great Gerald Levert(god bless that talented brother, I'm gonna have to review some more of his music when I get a chance) you can't really go wrong, if you're a fan of that real soul music with that hip-hop funk then this album is for you, it's a classic record, it has an even deeper meaning to me because this is how I was became interested in this group, they've made a lot of classics in their careers, solo and in group efforts(BBD and basically most of them releasing solo albums), much love to the NE fam, keep that music coming fellas

I AM LIKE THE BIGGEST NEW EDITION FAN EVER...SO I REALLY LIKE THIS CD. AND EVERYTHING ELSE THEY'VE PUT OUT!!

My third favorite NE album.......2006-02-27

...after 1984's New Edition and 1988's Heart Break. This album showed that New Edition could grow up with their sound. I still like the funky Hit Me Off. The group actually sounds good with Bobby Brown back for this time. Brown just steals the show on the ones with Johnny Gill singing lead, but lets Ralph Tresvant sing his buttery smooth vocals. And Ricky Bell, Ronnie Devoe and Michael Bivins contribute a lot to this album. Biv continues to do his macked out raps on some songs. I liked the offerings that P Diddy produced, such as You Don't Have To Worry. And they sound nice on ballads like I'm Still In Love with You and How Do You Like Your Love Served. Offerings from Jam and Lewis, Jermaine Dupri, Gerald Levert and Edwin Nicholas, and others help bring the group up to date. This album surprisingly had several hits, proving that NE was just as competitive as Boyz II Men who were already a popular group at the time.

Life and Death On The Great White Way.......2007-06-24

Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.

What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.

As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.

The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.

There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

Fantastic!.......2007-06-18

A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!

Well executed, entertaining, musical.......2007-03-25

The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'

Eclectic Mix.......2007-02-24

Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.

Loved the DVD and this CD is just as entertaining. George Benson oozes showmanship so much so that it comes across just listening. "On Broadway and Bye bye love" are the stand out's.

Bonnie Raitt may call Chris Smither "my Eric Clapton," but Smither's importance has less to do with instrumental prowess than with fusing sonic textures and with finely crafted lyrics. Smither's best songs aspire to poetic insights via the blues, evoking troubled, complicated moods through the incessant, slinky groove of his guitar. Working again with session player and producer Stephen Bruton, Smither weds lilting acoustic blues arrangements with more ambitious, spacious sounds--including diverse percussive rhythms, piano, organ, and blues harp. The sonics are at times reminscent of Daniel Lanois's work with Bob Dylan. Smither's most memorable original work isn't found on this, his ninth album, though it may be his best collection. The only misstep is the zydeco jaunt "Tell Me Why You Love Me," which sounds out of place amid all the eerie meditations. In Smither's vision, folk music, like life, plays out "in very complicated measures / And they can't be simplified / If we just keep this together / All the rest is justified." And he shows the same intensity in his choice of covers, especially Tim Hardin's gorgeous "Don't Make Promises," here found in its definitive version. --Roy Kasten

Da Blues, No Mo' better. .......2007-03-25

In the spirit of Mississippi John Hurt, this is The Blues. 4get the Folk label some have marked him!
Like other fans of Chris, I discovered his beauty from his 2nd LP.
"I'm A Stranger" quickly then became a "Must-Have".

Many, many years later [2004] I had wondered what became of Chris Smither, while visiting Tempe, AZ. I found "Drive You Home Again" -used- at ZIA Records while searching for anything by him other than what I already owned, and was surprised to find something 'fairly' recent!
Yeah, I was a bit late discovering this gem, but feel compelled now to say he hadn't missed a beat since his 2nd release, "Don't Drag It On"!

The music here is timeless, and must be heard by any Blues Fan.
If you're like me, pissed that you missed "Mississippi" John Hurt in his prime, you'll be glad to know you can still hear/listen to a Chris Smither now, perform as comparably as possible. He does add a bit of Jazz, though, to his Folkish-Blues on occasion. Nuttin' wrong with that, eh?

How can you be this good and not be famous?.......2006-09-17

My only answer to the question I posed in my review title is that Chris Smither sings the type of music that is not usually played on the radio. If he were on the radio, everyone would own a Chris Smither album.

I saw Chris Smither at a show at the Old Town School of Folk Music several years ago. The tickets were free (from a friend who couldn't go). I had never heard of Smither before and I was bowled away. Not only did I love the music, but he is an excellent concert performer.

Smither combines a great voice, amazing guitar playing (influenced by Mississippi John Hurt), and extremely clever lyrics that make you think, laugh, or get wistful, often in the same song.

This is a superb album that I would recommend to anyone.

Get "Waiting on a Train" Instead.......2003-09-02

After falling in love with Smither's newest CD, Waiting on a Train, I decided to try this one. A big disappointment! What I love about Smither on the new CD is how wonderful his guitar playing is and how well he accompanies himself. On Drive You Home Again, Bruton overproduced the album. There are too many musicians and just too much stuff going on that you only hear Smither as a singer. The arrangments lack all of the sweetness that makes Waiting on a Train so great. I would not recommend this CD.

one of my favorite CDs.......2003-02-20

This CD is really one of my all time favorite CD's. For me, this CD provides moments like at a Grateful Dead show when, the music lifts the top of your head, allowing pure thought below. Really don't know how else to put it.
P.S. the other reviewer was absolutely correct about the last two tracks.

love the lyrics.......2000-03-16

i heard this on the radio a couple of weeks ago and had to hear the rest. Except for the last two cuts which seem out of sych with the rest of the music this is a first rate CD. he's a poet with lyrics, the melodies are floating or funky, toe tapping rhythms, the CD is fun to listen to... again and again.

I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.

Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20

If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.

Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.

It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22

My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.

"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.

All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!

a lost gem.......2004-10-14

i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.

Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19

BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

Perfect starter CD!.......2005-02-12

I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this CD yet. Released in conjuction with the Nationally-released PBS documentary "America's Choir" - this album is a perfect starting place for people who wish to have a sampler of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Serving as both a latter-day "greatest hits" and a stand alone album, this CD gathers six tracks from the Choir's recently released albums "Consider The Lilies," "Spirit Of America" and "Peace Like A River" and adds TEN brand new tracks recorded specially for this project, creating a perfect sampler of both the Choir's magnificent history and it's current sound. It highlights the strengths of the Choir's repetoire, from well-known hymns ("Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing") to patriotic standards ("Battle Hymn Of The Republic") to folk songs ("Shenandoah," "Bound For The Promised Land") and even some surprises, like the traditional Welsh anthem "O Home Beloved" and the "Fugue In C Major (Jig)" for organ and orchestra. A wonderful, wonderful CD, with startling changes in mood and tempo, but with the unifying artistry of the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Sqare.

Out of the Ordinary.......2003-09-06

It took a while for this album to grow on me. After listening to Dave's first A&M release, "How Did You Find Me Here," I expected something just as completely brilliant and profound. At first listen, I was disappointed with many of the songs. They just didn't seem to catch the imagination the same way.

Still, the album made it to my iPod and over time I'd catch myself really enjoying a tune I wasn't familiar with. Each time I'd check I'd find the song was from this album. Finally, I turned off the all the distractions and just listened to the album and found myself caught up in the beautiful "ordinariness" of the lyrics on a few of the songs. I smirked my way through "Advertisizing Man", I was deeply moved by "Let Them In" and I smiled knowingly while listening to "Wildberry Pie". In fact, I think some of the lyrics in Wildberry Pie (probably a bit R-rated for an Amazon.com review) have to be some of the most poetic I've ever heard. Each time I hear Dave sing them, I'm taken back...and that's the point of good songwriting, I suppose.

Anyway, this is a great album about mostly ordinary stuff. Dave takes it and lifts it to a bit of a higher plane.

A second-best album; still grrrrreat!.......2000-12-31

I agree with Tim that David Wilcox' previous album, "How Did You Find me Here," is the best Wilcox on the market. Of course, it is also true that the best Wilcox there IS is live -- whether he is indoors at the tiny Iron Horse in Northampton, MA, or in the open air at the North Atlantic Folk Festival, both places I have seen Wilcox over the years. This is no recommendation for his live album, by any means, as the songs there are chosen for diversity and thus do not recreate the consistent sense of place Wilcox brings to any show; it is instead to suggest that the produced music of Wilcox can be -- and, in albums like "Home Again," IS -- powerful, poignant, humorous, and deep storytelling from a master singer-songwriter without necessarily even being his "best."

But the five stars are clearly deserved here. From the short, sweet love poem of "Burgundy Heart-Shaped Medalion" as it turns into a simple Bach solo on the guitar, to the heart-wrenching "Chet Baker's Swan Song" complete with sweet soaring solo trumpet, this album is a tour-de-force. Alternately funny (Advertising Man), distant (Across the mighty ocean) and raw (Covert War), Wilcox presents a smooth journey with no bumps and yet highs all the way through.

Of course, although an impressive representative of both sides of the singer-songwriter split, what I admire most about Wilcox is ability to pick the perfect song to cover in his albums. He brought us a MUCH better cover of Buddy Mondock's "The Kid" than the dirge Cry Cry Cry brought us on his previous, best album; after this album he goes on to cover "Missing You" in such a way that it turned out to be a much better song than Richard Marx would have had us believe. Here, too, he does not disappoint, presenting the 2 minute short piece of Gorka's "Let Them In," based on a poem found in an army hospital better than any song of loss ever made. If he can do that in 2 minutes, imagine what he can do in 5 (see "Chet Baker's Swan Song for an answer!).

"Home Again" is home comfort music........1998-12-14

"Home Again" is second only to "How Did You Find Me Here". Here David continues his meaningful lyrics that tell great stories. In particular, "Burgundy Heart", "Let Them In," and "Covert War" are wonderful songs that stick with you. Wilcox deviates slightly from his tried-and-true guitar on a few tracks, but the listener benefits from David's experimenting.

A Gift for Imagery.......1998-08-24

This was my first exposure to David's work and I was immediately captivated. The music is mellow and powerful and the lyrics just get better the more often you listen to them. The man has a gift for painting powerful images with his lyrics and for telling wonderfully human stories.

If you haven't added Wilcox to your collection, start here first. Wilcox provides a insightful look at the world with songs that make you think, laugh and even get a little piloerection. As of 7/97 this is still his best (sorry David; like them all, buy them all; but START HERE FIRST.
