5 out of 5 stars OMG GOOD!!.......2007-03-09

This is the BEST album ever!! I'm not a big fan of metal music BUT this music gets you SOOOOO PUMPED!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! I'm so glad I bought this and if you haven't seen the movie then I suggest you do cuz it makes you like the music even more!! Great purchase!! :)

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2007-02-11

this soundtrack is awesome. i got it fast and i havent listened to anything other cd since.

4 out of 5 stars Great Raving Music.......2007-01-16

It's a Soundtrack, so expect of it what you can expect of a soundtrack. Since I love tech music, I'm thrilled with it, but for someone who goes INSANE for tech and progressive, it's not DJ Tiesto and will never be. Some pieces are rather weak, but "Predator", "More Human than Human", "Euphoria" and "Lords of Salem" make it up for them.

This is the kind of music that makes you want to be alone to enjoy it.

I give it four out of five because it doesn't "elevate you". Other than that, it's cool.

5 out of 5 stars Covenant OST.......2007-01-04

The first song on the CD is the best. I thought the entire soundtrack was good, but something seemed to be missing ... the movie I guess. Some soundtracks can live with out the movie, and I fully thought this one would, but for me it didn't. It still is a very good soundtrack though, and I am very glad I bought it ... I hope you will be too!

5 out of 5 stars Killer Soundtrack!!!!.......2007-01-03

Just what the title says, killer soundtrack. I love every band on it. Two lesser known and two of my favorites, Collide & Front Line Assembly grace it with thier presence. A great "More Human Than Human" remix, along with my favorite track from Rob Zombie's latest album, "Lords of Salem" (what a fitting song for the theme of the movie).

You'd be a hardened, dense soul if you didn't fall immediately for Greg Brown's "'Cept You and Me Babe," the opening track to Covenant, the latest in an astounding string of gems mixing blues, country, and folk with Brown's understated wit and tangy insights. "Half the people you see these days are talking on cell phones / Driving off the road and bumping into doors," he sings sardonically. "I guess nobody's lonely anymore / 'cept you and me babe." One of many such poignantly twisted lines, Brown and a pared-down, mostly acoustic band deliver a captivating set of new songs (including a delightful bonus "buried" track called "Marriage Chant"). His first record in three years is rich with deftly conveyed emotion, craft, and an elegant funkiness as raw and mature as Brown's own deep pipes. Produced by guitarist Bo Ramsey, Brown's new work bites and snarls, caresses and cackles under Ramsey's understated musical settings. --Martin Keller

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best folk singer, bar none........2004-09-19

It would be very difficult to look at the humor, tenderness, intelligence, and originality of Greg Brown's lyrics and call him anything other than a true musical artist. While most folk singers these days all write one type of song--that is, a brooding and semi-self-indulgent ballad about pain and loneliness--Greg Brown's songs have a haunting yet friendly and open quality that sets them well above the rest. He is clearly a masterful observer of his world, plus an educated one at that, yet he doesn't preach. Even when some of his songs take on an edge of sharp social commentary, he remains as humble as his songs are honest, sad, lonely, or funny--but always lovely.

"Covenant" itself is a great album, from its music to its beautiful cover. It's hard to say which Greg Brown album is the best; each shine in their own way, but songs like "Rexroth's Daughter" and "Lullaby" make this album a must-own.

5 out of 5 stars Greg Brown Does the Blues.......2004-01-18

In a passionate, blues-inflected series of songs, Greg Brown explores the boundaries of folk music, tracing the areas where folk moves to blues. His usual baritone is low, sometimes guttural, and the music and the lyrics fit together in ways that most folk artists can only dream about. Some songs are explicity blues - "Blues Go Walking" and others hover closer to that boundary.

In the opening track, for example, "Cept You and Me Babe," he inverts the meaning of the title line, turning it into a message of separation and loss. Earlier Amazon reviewers criticized the the lines "Half the people you see these days are talking on cell phones/driving of the roads and bumping into doors/people used to spend quite a bit of time alone/I guess nobodys lonely any more/'cept you and me babe." As far as poetry goes, you know, that's not half bad, but combined with the music and the inverted meaning, you'll find you can't get the song out of your head.

Other fine songs include "Rexroth's Daughter," "Blues Go Walking," "Dream City" and "Blue Car." Overall this is a darker-toned album, perhaps reflecting Brown's life at the time, but it is melodic, moving and memorable. It's great to see Brown experimenting with music forms, and not trapped in a formula.

One tip: wait a full minute past the end of the last documented track. There's a surprise lurking there.

Brown is one of half a dozen genuine folksingers in America, still untainted by the music machine, still energetic and inventive. This is a fine album, and a fine addition to Brown's extensive discography. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Another musical gem, with a catch........2001-08-16

Some incredible songs performed beautifully, especially "'Cept You and Me Babe" and "Lullaby". "Marriage Chant", hidden at the end, is also great. What's not so great is the sound quality: grossly exaggerated, boomy bass. This might make your boom box or car radio sound better, but it [stinks] on a good system. "Slant Six Mind" was much better. I can't understand a few of the earlier reviewers that commented positively on the sound. There were two versions of this CD released - maybe that explains it - I have the later one.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2001-06-20

Greg Brown is a talented guitarist, poet and singer. Don't miss this one, it's moving and sensual, and it rocks!

3 out of 5 stars a fantastic piece of work!.......2001-05-13

My dad turned me on to Greg Brown this spring. He bought the CD down from Atlanta to visit, beaming with pride that a fellow Iowa boy had been getting such critical aclaim. I was suprised to see how strong Brown's cult is, and since hearing this album, his name and music seems to be turning up everywhere.

Greg's voice is low, rumbling, strong but wavering. His songwriting is in the tradition of Bob Dylan/Bruce Springstein - a solid mix of blues, country and rock and roll. If you like these other songwriters, I urge you to buy this.

People like Greg Brown, Wayne Hancock and Lucinda Williams are the best thing country music has going for it after decades of trash.

'Lullybye' is my favorite track, but the whole album is good.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2007-02-14

Morbid Angel's Covenant is a fantastic album and is a must for all fans of death metal. Well, there's not much more to say than that.

5 out of 5 stars Their tightest album released to date........2007-02-03

From the first time I heard the song rapture on Headbanger's Ball, I was hooked. This is by far one of the most stand out Florida Death Metal bands formed in 1984, they released Mearciless Death independently 1988 prior to their Alters of Madness release in 1989 on earache records. After switching record companies twice, they landed on Giant Records, and this was their first, and possibly greatest release (right beside Blessed Are The Sick).
This album was fifth full album, and was produced by Flemming Rasmusssen (of metallica fame), and this album shows it's tight production. Rapture, the lead of song is full of change ups and a blast beat beat that just cruches you right to the bone. My absolute favorite song on this album is God of Emptiness, just a dark thundering song that could be a tribal chant. That song was even featured in a bevis and butthead episode. The other highlingts are Angel of Disease, a bit of a faster, lighter song, and World of S*** (The Promised Land). Trey Azagthoth really has put together one of the difinitive American Death Metal bands, right beside the likes of Obituary, Deicide, and Slayer. Pick this Album up, You will dig this.

5 out of 5 stars The Death Metal Gods.......2007-01-23

When Morbid Angel arrived on the Death Metal scene, they brought more to the table then your ordinary Death Metal band. They proved that it didnt all have to be about "playing as fast as you can" and added intelligent Guitar solos and Thunderous Blast Beats to the element. "Covenant" remains my favorite Morbid Angel album. Even though all of their albums are great, "Convenant" might be one of the top death Metal albums of all times. Be warned though. IF you are expecting all out gore Metal at lightning paced speeds, then this album is not for you. Its not going to sound like something along the lines of Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, or Vomitory. Yes, there are some times when the album picks up with some "speed" but most of Morbid Angels tunes are dark, slow, and with thunderous Blast Double Bass Beats and with mind blurring guitar solos. Thats what makes them so unique in the Death Metal world. ENJOY

5 out of 5 stars Destined To Be A Classic.......2006-07-06

A most blackened death metal album indeed; what I enjoy most about Covenant is that it partially avoids the problem of most DM albums, which is repetition. Although the brutality is non-stop, there are enough changes in tempo and mood on this album that adds an overall sense of variety. A minor complaint are the lyrics, which contain frankly lame and outdated "Satanic" imagery; otherwise, the lyrics are rather interesting, possibly the bands finest. Now, for the band itself: David Vincent is probably the most brutal DM vocalist out there, and his supportive bass lines are quite good as well (they are no less audible than on any Slayer relase). Guitarist Trey Azeghthoth is undoubtedly one of the finest in the genre; his style is an eclectic mix that sort of sounds like Hanneman/King, Joe Satriani and Vernon Reid all blended into one. Finally, Pete Sandoval delivers quite a punch on the double bass and snare. His style is very clean, never falls behind. As far as the actual music goes, there are really no bad songs on Covenant, but IMHO I feel the strongest tracks are "Vengeance is Mine," "Lion's Den" and, of course, "God of Emptiness" of Beavis and Butthead fame...BOW TO ME FAITHFULLY!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lifeless? Dull? Yeah right........2006-06-07

I decided to review this perticular album because its the unholy day and because its so dark. "Covenant" by Morbid Angel is anything but lifeless or dull. Infact, its my favorite MA album. Even though there's only one guitarist on this album, it still sounds like there's a dual-guitar assault on each song (except for "Nar Mattaru"). David Vincent's vocals got alot harsher than in their previous album "Altars of Madness," and unfortunately, his basslines aren't that audible due to the mediocre production. Trey Azagthoth's guitarring is awesome, his riffs and solos have also improved, he also plays keyboards in "Nar Mattaru." Pete Sandoval, where to begin with him. His fast but on cue beats and hypnotic double bass makes me rank him with Dave Lombardo.

Every song on here kicks, "Nar Mattaru" is done only with keyboards and its one of the creepiest songs I've ever heard, even though there's no vocals or guitar. "Rapture, "Vengeance is Mine," and "Blood on My Hands" are the highlights of this great death metal album.

This is THE best album of 1993, if you're looking for an album from the early 90's that isn't grunge or alternative metal (both sub-genres suck), this is for you.

Today is June 6, 2006; the darkest day.

It was only a matter of time before Iroquois singer Joanne Shenandoah was seduced by the lure of electronica. Often based around chant, her music would seem to lend itself to the designs of producer Jim Wilson. Part Choctaw Indian, he's worked with Robbie Robertson, produced albums by Walela, and recorded ethno-techno with Tulku and Native electronica with Little Wolf. But his take on electronica has always sounded second hand and mechanical. Even the live cellist comes off like a bad sample. Shenandoah's previous producer, Tom Wasinger, brought a supple understatement to her music, framing her powerful voice in meticulously-textured arrangements of global-Native chamber music. But on Covenant, Shenandoah becomes a side musician on her own recording, her multi-tracked voice reduced to an exotic flavor. Instead of the chilled-Native sound they were looking for, Covenant is simply defrosted. --John Diliberto

Album Description

Prayers for the Dance Floor of Your Heart...

Joanne Shenandoah was a Grammy Nominee for her recording "Peacemaker's Journey in 2000."

These songs honor the Covenant between humankind and the earth with riveting music that masterfully weaves original compositions and powerful messages from the ancient Iroquois prophecy. On this progressive recording Shenandoah's enchanting voice is backed with percussive grooves, vivid string arrangements, and tribal sounds in a modern style that ranges from dance to trance.

"Believe me: this woman has power. You can hear it, feel it in her voice: lilting, buoyant... the steady whisper of a clear, cool stream that wears down a once-tall, proud speckled mountain; truth." -Global Rhythm Magazine

"Our music is healing, eternal and earth conscious. Our songs celebrate our survival and have a deep spiritual essence which will resonate around a world which needs Native music." -JOANNE SHENANDOAH

4 out of 5 stars Consistent rhythms, and bouyant and spiritual singing.......2003-12-15

Playing Time - 59:07

The Silver Wave Records label features the best in contemporary Native American music, and their mission is to present quality innovative music that will touch people on a deep level, instill a sense of peace, and help spread peace throughout the world. Joanne Shenandoah's new album honors the Covenant between humankind and the earth, as well as emphasizing the responsibilities that people have to each other. The word, covenant, is a strong one with connotations of formality, agreement and promise.

Singing in her native Iroquois language, Shenandoah is lyrical and fluid. Her songs honor the earth, call for its protection, pay tribute to Chief Shenandoah, give thanks for and celebrate the blessings of life, and make a strong plea for universal peace. Joanne's lead vocals are backed by Leah Shenandoah, Nick Raineri and herself. Chief Jake Swamp of the Mohawk Nation opens the album with a spoken recitation of a prayer that gives thanks for all living things.

Synthesized keyboard sounds and percussive grooves present the enchanting melodies which incorporate new age sensibilities. Matzl Galindo's flute and Michael Kott's cello provide engaging fills and accompaniment. Shenandoah was voted Best Female Artist in both 1998 and 1999 at the Native American Music Awards, and her "Peacemaker's Journey" album was a 2001 Grammy nominee. Now, "Covenant" presents a unique, contemporary sound that has both ancestral and daring, innovative underpinings. With its rhythms of consistent instensity, and bouyant and spiritual singing characterized by sweetness of tone and purity, Shenandoah's new music is most relaxing and inspirational. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, Oregon)

5 out of 5 stars Covenant by Joanne Shenandoah.......2003-12-01

For quite awhile now I have tried to put into place what it is that Joanne's musical works do for me when I listen to them. In this newest CD release Covenant, I think that I may have found the answer! I find that during and after listening to all of her music I feel very humble, in the truest sense. The beginning of it featuring the Thanksgiving Address is a very powerful message, I honor that this was included into this CD, and that it sets the theme for the entire album. Given the fact that we are already seeing the Christmas season promoted the day after Halloween; the greed and competition racing across the radio airwaves, TV's, newspapers, over the sound systems in stores, etc. Very little is about the reality of life and our important connection with the Earth Mother, but most importantly our connection with one another. I find that the truth that is spoken in the native language is most important to our whole world. Reaching back in time forwarding the knowledge to the present that we must respect all of life and Mother Earth. More of the people of the world need to realize this message; this album is a step in that direction. It is a lovely guide to those who know little of native traditions and the importance of honoring the whole of life. I thank all of those involved and look forward to more of these healing words and works.

5 out of 5 stars Her best album ever!!.......2003-11-27

I am in love with Joanne's music, and this cd is like a dream come true to me! I feel the message conveyed through this cd is very necessary for the world today. This cd is my personal favorite, if I heard it in a club, I'd dance my tail off!!!!

4 out of 5 stars More Than Music.......2003-11-25

Joanne Shenandoah's latest CD Covenant, is so much more than the music or her powerful voice... it tells a story of traditions, life and changes. Keep in mind, I am just a fan who can only express what I feel when listening to, and just as importantly, "reading" Covenant. Covenant has a different sound than what we have come to expect from Joanne Shenandoah, but the heart and soul of this CD is in the words and story of each song... I love it... it goes straight to the heart. Would I rather hear her voice in the foreground and the music in the background... yes, but that is a production choice and not one that prevented me from wanting and recommending Covenant as a MUST buy for anyone who appreciates Joanne Shenandoah's music. Once again, another of Joanne Shenandoah's many talents surfaces. Buy Covenant for the music, just don't overlook the added value of this CD... read the words behind the songs that captivate you... read every word of the insert... it's a peace of art.

5 out of 5 stars Joanne Shenandoah Latest Effort Exceeds All Expectations.......2003-11-12

Being a fan of Joanne Shenandoah's music since the early 1990's, I have heard such a diverse range of powerful ballads, to traditional Iroquois music, to rock music. In each of these categories, Shenandoah's vocal abilities and her rich music accompaniment have provided a combination of awareness, intensity, and tranquility. If angels could sing, they would sound like Joanne Shenandoah. Covenant takes us to another dimension of Shenandoah's sound. It is a blend of Native American tradition and dance rythyms similar to those heard from the Middle East. She blends flute, guitar, cello, as well as heavenly voices. When you hear the music on this CD, you will not be able to turn it off, or for that matter stop moving. Everytime I hear a new Joanne Shenandoah release, I believe I have heard her best, and with this offering, I feel a similar reaction. This CD is truly a classic. There was a time when critics called Joanne Shenandoah the "Native American Enya". After hearing this CD, I would have to say that Enya is in great company.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD Anywhere, in the car, at work, at play, &while resting.......2007-02-19

HI: I just bought this CD and I really like it. It is a great CD for anytime. The songs are great and not old churchy. I like listening to this Cd during stressful periods in my days, and when I am exercising.
The songs are wonderfully written and the vocals to match them. The words really make you think about your soul and your choices in life.
I wish there were more songs on this CD. I want to hear the next compilation for MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST. I also bought the other CD for My Utmost for his highest and I really enjoyed both.

5 out of 5 stars An overlooked masterpiece........2001-03-22

This CD was released 8 months after the huge success of the first My Utmost for His Highest project. Unfortunately, it failed to sell in the same numbers as the first. I will admit that at first, I didn't like it as much as the first. But it has grown on me, and now I like it more.

In my mind, one of the reasons it failed to sell in the same numbers as the first is that it doesn't have the name recognition the first did. While the first had Amy Grant, 4Him, Point of Grace, etc., this one has Anointed, Clay Crosse, Greg Long, and Lisa Bevill, among others. Michael W. Smith does make a return visit for two songs, the incredible SOMEDAY (SET THE CHILDREN FREE) and a recording with Anointed of JOYFUL, JOYFUL that's similar to Crown Him with Many Crowns from I'll Lead You Home.

Still, the reason this CD is so powerful is because of the overall theme and message of the songs. The idea was to release a collection around God's covenant with us and our response to it. When I really sat down and listened to the CD with that in mind, I was blown away. Some of the lyrics include: "I have made a promise/And so it will be...I belong to you/And you to Me." "I say it's a promise/A covenant, a destiny/I will come to set My children free." Susan Ashton contributes a beautiful version of Psalm 121 taken almost word for word from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible. By the time I reach the response to God, I find it easy to be praying "I promise all of my ways" and can claim the promise that "We will follow You, knowing You'll lead us through." The two instrumental songs, incorporating melodies from the other songs, add to the reflective mood.

This CD belongs in every Christian home. It is a great reminder of Who is ultimately in control of our lives and our world, and what He has promised to those who believe in Him.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2000-05-29

I loved this CD as much as the first one. If you have read Oswald Chamber's book, heard the first CD or are looking for an inspirational religious CD with music to please every taste, you have to buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars If you worship through music, It's a MUST!.......1999-10-02

A perfect sequal to "My Utmost For His Highest". You truly feel the Spirit! A wonderful mix of todays top gospel musicians. Contemporary mixed with traditional. Make sure you read the excerpts on the inside cover!

5 out of 5 stars When I'm tired or low, this CD definitely lifts my spirit!.......1999-07-14

The technical mixing of the CD is top quality! We have a surround sound home theater system, and you can hear every instrument and voice distinctly. The separation is superb! The music is annointed and Jesus' presence enters as you praise Him and listen to this music. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone that wants to enter into God's presence.

4 out of 5 stars In the mood for something different and creative?.......2006-12-21

I won't pretend that I knew anything about Covenant until I bought this CD. And the only reason I bought it was because I am a fan of synthpop, EBM and some industrial music, and I happened to find this album on sale.

Wow!

I won't say I loved it immediately, but "Ritual Noise" was a nice song to start with. While "Brave New World" and "20hz" creep closely to more melodic synthpop in style, they still maintain a distinct, devil-may-care vocal style that is unmistakable.

But my favorite tracks are not the three I've mentioned above. I LOVE "Spindrift" and "Greater Than The Sun". They are so creatively different than anything I have heard before and are utterly mesmerizing.

If you are normally a De/Vision- Mesh-style synthpop fan, open your mind and expand your repertoire with 'Skyshaper'. It's deliciously dark. Niiiice.

5 out of 5 stars The latest and relative best of Covenant.......2006-11-19

This album completes my collection of Covenant albums. 'Skyshaper' is the latest and newest offering from the talented Scandinavian trio. I first listened to 'Ritual Noise' and 'Brave New World' at a dance nightclub and was impressed by the dance and beat quality. The songs were entrancing and made you voluntarily move your body to its addictive rhythm. Montelius lends a dark metalic sound and voice to the lyrics. The mood of the entire album is a dark industrial mode where you as the listener is drawn into the movements and traveling journey these artists are on. I for one, am glad I purchased this album, 'Ritual Noise, 'Pulse' and 'Brave New World' is deserving in sound and mode.

The entire album is about travel, whether through the mind or literally. Is it the journey's we seek spiritually or metaphysically? That is up to the individual listener to decide. 'Greater Than The Sun' and 'Spindrift' are excellent paced songs that have some interesting lyrics. Spindrift is my pick for dance favoured music with a deep thrumming beat. The album ends with the slowest song 'The World is Growing Loud' which is a ode set out by Covenant to state that they are still going strong and will not vanish like so other artists have.

This is a nice listen. If you are a Covenant fan you won't be disappointed. A must purchase to add to your new age collection.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty solid..........2006-10-18

I'm not a huge Covenant fan, but after seeing them live just the other night, I'm a couple of notches closer. And now I feel the need to write a review.

Sky Shaper, for the most part, is very laid back, dark and melodic. It doesn't have quite as much energy as USOM, however, it is produced a little better and cleaner and songs have more depth and texture. Catchy bass lines and leads are incorporated into every song.

My favorite tracks are 20HZ (!!), Ritual Noise and The Men. Most tracks have a danceable beat, but I wouldn't consider them all to be dance tracks in themselves.

If you have the opportunity to see them live, do it! They put on an excellent show - the sound is clean and loud, the lighting effects are cool and most of the songs they play are dancy.

Overall, Sky Shaper is pretty solid, but leaves me a little eager to hear a more energized release in the future. If you're into futurepop or ebm, chances are you already have this. If you don't, I suggest getting your hands on it.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2006-07-28

Wow, I was amazed when I came here and saw all the negative reviews. While I appreciate everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I find it difficult to imagine how anyone who appreciates this style of music could consider it a sub 4 star album. Personally, I was blown away by it's clean synth lines and its beautiful sonic textures, I only own 2 other Covenant albums though I have other works by bands such as VNV, APB and Assemblage 23 and I feel compelled to say that is easily one of the, if not the, most beautiful album in the "genre" I have heard. ( Appreciating the folly of tying this in to any particular genre ).

Joakim states in the liner notes that "...to my imagination it brings forth dream sequences: standing in a field at night talking to the stars; walking the streets of a city watching the shadows of the buildings paint their abstract patterns on the sunlit pavements; compelling the unsen and unknown powers of Heaven to lend a helping hand in times of need; megalomaniac visions of summoning lightning from the careless sky..." and I can understand entirely where he's coming from with that. Indeed the overall mood is entirely more epic than some of the floorfilling numbers of their previous works, the simple, hypnotic beats transcending more than the simple need to fill a dancefloor and instead invoking powerful imagery, and stirring the senses of the listener.

I've yet to listen to the bonus disc, though if the what a previous user said regarding Subterfuge for 3 Absynths is anything to go by ( 42 minutes of a synth line with little variation ) then I think I would like nothing more, at least, if the sequence is as majestic as the rest of the album :D

5 out of 5 stars Covenant is once again shaping the future of techno.......2006-07-07

This album like all Covenant albums is cutting edge and pushing the limits of techno to a new level. Skyshaper has newer and smoother beats and rhythms then ever before. There is nothing else out there right now that keeps the pace with non stop quality songs. This album is newer and better. Unless you're stuck in the past and looking to relive older stuff you're going to LOVE Skyshaper. Once you put the CD in you will be sucked into the newest world of techno from Covenant called Skyshaper.

Industrial or synthpop? This distinction, which used to mean something, has slowly dissolved into a haze, and the fourth full-length from Sweden's Covenant does nothing to clear the air. Yet Covenant's undistorted vocals and clean, straightforward dance rhythms continue to attract an audience otherwise more interested in the noisy, monstrously voiced angst of bands like :Wumpscut: and Funker Vogt. Perhaps it's their knack for writing anthemic songs with dark lyrics easily stomached by industrial's core audience. Whatever the reason, United States of Mind is more of the same. The energizing "Like Tears in Rain" and the slower, more thoughtful "Afterhours" recall the electricity of the band's earlier material, even though most of the rest of the disc seems bloodless by comparison. Still, credit Covenant with writing memorable songs with more appeal than those of your average industrial band. --Steve Landau

5 out of 5 stars Best of industrial synth-techno music.......2005-06-29

Covenant's latest album release 'United States of Mind' is a great album best suited for a party full of young people for this 11 track CD has some very danceable tracks like 'Dead Stars', 'One World, One Sky, 'Tour de Force' and 'You Can Make Your Own Music'. The other songs on this album range from the slow industrial mixes of 'Afterhours and Humility' to the faster industrial bops of 'No Man's Land' and 'Still Life'.
It is a great CD for the varied music and types of beats. Is it synth pop or industrial? This CD shows that Covenant can bring these two genres together and formulate a new sub-genre with its own special sound and to great success.

3 out of 5 stars a few great songs with a lot of filler.......2005-02-14

I've decided this deserves at least three stars for the two great dance songs it includes, Dead Stars and Like Tears in Rain. Unfortunately, most of the other material consists of rather repetitive sounds with a chorus repeated over them, as if the band could not be bothered to expend more energy developing the album. This makes me further appreciate bands like The Cruxshadows and VnV Nation, who can produce danceable songs and then back them up with albums where every song is a worthwhile listen.

5 out of 5 stars Rare excellence.......2004-11-20

I listen to a lot of electro/EBM related. This is one of the best records in that genus. Why? Songs. Some absolutely brilliant songwriting on this album. A lot of people clearly are producing electronic music because they lack the discipline or talent to learn to play a traditional instrument, but they still want to be rock stars. Not these guys. They are among the rare few who have strong creative ideas and they're using the electronic tools to advance those ideas and put them out there.

I completely disagree with the reviewers who have said this record has a lot of filler. Every song on here is intense and distinctive. How can you say "Tour de Force" is filler? Oh well, I guess everyone has different taste.

3 out of 5 stars Several standouts, some filler.......2004-08-19

This is my first Covenant CD, I wasn't sure what to expect. The sound is really darker synthpop with some overtures of industrial.

Covenant is definitely the best dressed (as in wearing suits onstage) band out there. They really shine on the punchier dance floor anthems, it's when things slow down that I find them just ok; I much prefer VNV nation in that area.

That being said, "Like Tears in the Rain" gets things off to a great start, very danceable. Things turn average until "Helicopter", a really interesting tune. "Tour De Force" gets thing moving again.

If "Dead Stars" can't turn you onto Covenant, nothing will. It's a dancefloor anthem, very dark Depeche Mode. "One World One Sky" is a great followup, but things weaken on the closing "Still Life" and the silent ending track.

All in all, the strengths here outnumber the weaknesses and I will definitely check out more Covenant in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Covenant's Best & a Top 10 Electro Album.......2004-02-26

`United States of Mind' stands as Covenant's crowning achievement to date matching the intensity of the landmark `Sequencer' but surpassing that effort in songwriting and diversity of sound. Where `Sequencer' was an industrial dancefloor killer from start to finish, `USoM' alternates between hard-hitting dance tracks and sparse, minimal pieces that let the vocals take the lead.

The 1st tier of songs, the dance hits, includes "Tour De Force", "Dead Stars", "No Man's Land" and "One World One Sky". All are excellent and forceful. "Dead Stars" is the most synth-pop feeling of the bunch, while "No Man's Land" is the hardest. "One World One Sky" is a simple, anthem-style industrial song.

The aforementioned second tier of songs includes "Afterhours", "Still Life", "Humility" and "Like Tears in Rain". That last one is the masterpiece of the bunch featuring a slick, catchy chorus. This song unites the old and new styles present on the album putting the vocals more on display with enough beat and rhythm to keep the dance crowd smiling. "Afterhours" seems like a descendant of NIN's "Closer" with a lighter, airier chorus. "Still Life" is a marvel, minimal and soulful, containing some of Eskil's best lyrics. However this song is the furthest from Covenant's former self and could leave some thinking it's off-target. That's unfortunate because I think this is one of the band's top dozen songs.

Overall `United States of Mind' is the perfect blend of Covenant's industrial dance roots and it's new, crisp & clean future-pop style.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5: This album takes time to grow on you.......2006-12-02

I have listened to the more recent Covenant releases and I am working backwards to this Scandinavian trio's beginnings. I purchased this album through Amazon.com having undertaken a committment to get every Covenant CD that has been released. 'Europa' has a interesting album title and a even more interesting cover. It is a infrared sattelite picture of Europe that shows approaching cloud cover from the North Atlantic approaching. I was intrigued to get this EP and see what the songs were like.

I have found that the early works by Covenant are sometimes darker and sharper in tone and pitch. And definitely more industrial which suits me fine. The modern Covenant is much more dance orientated and techno friendly. The first 4 songs show a dark industrial element in the songs and the last 5 songs are more experimental in nature and tone.

I found 'Leviathan', 'Wind of the North' and 'Riot' as the best picks in this album as they have a decent dance beat, lyrics were easy to comprehend and there were variable beats to the music. Those who like Covenant that experiments with sounds and tone will enjoy 'Go Film' and 'Wall of Sound'.

Whilst this album is for the most part enjoyable, I like the modern Covenant sound better. This does get some getting used to and I know with several more listens I will like this EP that much more. This album is for all Covenant fans and those who are after good Industrial/Fusion music.

5 out of 5 stars excellent CD.......2004-12-07

This album is absolutely wonderful, just like all of Covenant's material. It shows a wide range of electronic music and is laced with wonderful vocals. It also contains what I would consider one of the top ten EBM songs of all time, "I Am".

5 out of 5 stars Future-pop folks!.......2003-04-05

If EBM is good future-pop is best!

5 out of 5 stars Like Diamonds in the Ground.......2003-02-23

In a world where the humdrum sounds of voices without messages and music without meaning seems to mesh hand in hand with the tastes of the listening population, there are other things, diamonds buried beneath a fragile Earth, that many people either don't hear or simply fail to recognize. I'm not certain why that is or why messages with meaning find themselves slighted in this age of pop glamorization and industry fads, but one thing is for certain. We, the listeners, are forced to peer and prod at the scene more and more, scoping out the icons that birth nations of thoughts within their outstretched hands. In their early releases, Covenant can be found as one such band, giving many things that are unique to audiences trained to feast on the simplistic diets that other EBM acts have tried to force into people's minds. Its within their lyrical workings, their beats that seem to flow, and the way that their music meshes together that makes it such an impactual force, and something I find myself listening to years after the fact.

In Europa, many heartfelt spectrums are touched upon in the conveyance of that emotional rainbow, drawing forth beats bathed in the blood of hardship and pain, love and remembrance, and especially that manufactured in defiance. These are all set to beats that keep the body sounding off without a slowdown in their inner workings, and feeding the audience that cares nothing for the message behind the motivation. Still, for the people that do, there are other factors present as well. Within the contents of "Tension," there is a cry that tells you that you aren't alone in noticing that something is amiss in the social wreckage lying about you. In "Leviathan," one of my favored tracks listened herein, there is almost an account that states that everything runs in cycles, that kingdoms rise and crumble only to be born again. In "Walls of Sound," perhaps one the best songs I've heard in quite some time, there is a notation about how we are all diamonds in the ground simply waiting to be found but that we are captives in this wailing wall of sound. Still, this is only an inkling of what is contained herein.

If you want something that has the means to captivate the mind and make the body move within the same motions, I would suggest Covenant as a band worth looking into and Europa as a wonderful starting point for the inquisitive eye. It has a little bit of everything within its nature, all of its adornments leading toward one point in space that seems to define humanity and its social spectrum, and does so in quite an array of fashions. Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars a bit trite, isn't it?.......2001-02-24

This is the only cd by Conenant I own but I don't think i'll ever buy another. The work is not bad, it is just that it follows a very trite way and they don't add anything interesting to my ears. Their songs are so repetitive that when you've listened to a couple of minutes of each song you have listened enough; no song add an interesting change in its rhythm, no surprises are to come after the first listenings. The voice is not bad, in fact it is quite good, and makes me think of Front 242's magnificent singer. But everytime I have this cd in my hands I change my mind and put on some Front 242 cd on the discman. Covenant does not add anything interesting, they just follow efficiently a very trite way.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Covenant Album.......2007-07-15

5 out of 5 stars Northern Lights - Covenant album - best money spent ever.......2007-05-13

I loved this album. The best song in my opininon on the album is Bullet - great lyrics - followed by Call the Ships to Port. Great money, well worth waiting for it to arrive via import.

If you love this type of album then I'd also suggest VNV Nation and Apotygma Berzerk - particularly Kathy's Song (VNV Nation remix).

3 out of 5 stars Outstanding words, sleepy music.......2007-01-03

Lyrically, it's a five star peace, but the pacing is a little bit slow for someone used the adrenaline-rush techno pace of Front 242 or Prodigy.

5 out of 5 stars The best Covenant album to date for me .......2006-12-02

I listened to 'Northern Light' and was instantly impressed. 4 of the best Covenant songs feature on this album and they are 'Call The Ships to Port', 'Bullet', 'We Stand Alone' and 'We Want Revolution'. Not only do these songs have great lyrics and are sung greatly but they have a great dance to beat, techno and trance easy. The first song 'Monochrome' begins slow and slowly through the song, the beat builds in intensity and tone reaching a chorus. Released in 2002, 'Northern Light' gained Covenant more fanbase around the globe.

Two other promising songs that were experimental were 'Invisible&Silent' and 'Rising Sun'. Basically there is no bad song on this album. I have read previous reviewers and cannot understand some of the bad reviews levelled on this album. This was the first album, the talented trio signed with and many fans saw this has a traitorous move against the deep seated independent roots. Alas, Covenant have remained true to their beginnings and have only modernised their unique music sound that is changing with the times.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this album and this CD has become a popular listening CD for me and my friends. Well worth the purchase for any devout Covenant fan to add to his or her collection.
