Great Introduction To Extreme Metal.......2007-04-30
If there is one compilation disc to end all compilation discs, Choosing Death is the top choice. The soundtrack was composed along with the book of the same title, and I feel it is an excellent retrospective to how death metal and grindcore have grown overtime and how they are still strong to this day. Let's have a run through the tracks and see what you will get in this compilation:
1. "Scum" by Napalm Death - This band is an essential to lovers of extreme music, and it is an excellent choice to start this off with the title track from their 1987 debut of the same name, which pioneered the grindcore genre as we know of.
2. "Walls" by Siege - In 1985, an overlooked grindcore band called Siege was making music, and this is one of their songs. Another excellent preview of 80's grind.
3. "Maggots In Your Coffin" by Repulsion - Again, we have more 80's grindcore, and this band is one you need to take note on. Fast and destructive is how Repulsion did it.
4. "Chapel of Ghouls" by Morbid Angel - An excellent track taken from this Floridan band's 1989 debut called "Altars of Madness". It's very haunting.
5. "Severe Burns" by Nihilist - Before we had Swedish death metal legends Entombed, we had Nihilist. They never released a full length, but they played some excellent material. (previously unreleased)
6. "Slowly We Rot" by Obituary - Vintage death metal. Obituary is not as well known as other vintage bands like Morbid Angel and Death, but they did put a definite impact. Plus John Tardy is one unique vocalist, and Allen West plays excellent guitar riffs.
7. "Lunatic of God's Creation" by Deicide - I'm not a big Deicide fan, but they did keep it interesting in the 90's. Even though they stirred up controversy with their Satanic beliefs, they played some excellent music.
8. "Suffer The Children (live" by Napalm Death - We have Napalm Death again, but this time, it's when the band began their death metal period. Still excellent.
9. "Hammer Smashed Face" by Cannibal Corpse - The band's biggest song, and a representation of their best work. Alex Webster's bass sends chills down my spine.
10. "Heartwork" by Carcass - Ah, Carcass, the band that wasn't afraid of change. This was their best known song, and the guitarists are excellent.
11. "Need" by At The Gates - They influenced a million bands. And they played the style best. Need I say more?
12. "Symbolic" by Death - This compilation is not complete without the strongest death metal band ever, Death. Chuck Schuldiner defines talent, creativity and Death well.
13. "Demon of the Fall" by Opeth - Progressive death metal legends with one of their top notch tracks.
14. "Dead Smart" by Brutal Truth - Grindcore from the 90's. Brutal Truth played this style well and focused on the more crossover side of grindcore, focusing on politics rather than death and gore.
15. "Powers That Be" by Hate Eternal - Here we start the 21st century side of death metal, and what could be better than Erik Rutan's (ex-Morbid Angel and Ripping Corpse) continuation called Hate Eternal?
16. "Untitled" by Pig Destroyer - This band defines the continuation of grindcore, plus with heavy influence from bands like Today Is The Day and Neurosis, you're in for something special. Yay Relapse! (previously unreleased)
17. "We Will Rise" by Arch Enemy - Another melodic death metal band is featured on here. This track features Angela Gossow era Arch Enemy and one of their best known tracks.
18. "Psyklon Aeon" by Zyklon - Can't forget blackened death metal, especially that from the spawn of black metal legends Emperor!
19. "Sarcophagus" by Nile - One of the greatest modern death metal bands today. They mix death metal with Egyptian sound elements and craft something unique.
20. "Souls To Deny (live)" by Suffocation - Brutal death metal legends with excellent musicmanship performing a previously unreleased track.
Overall, you have quite a variety here, plus liner notes are included for each track. I HIGHLY recommend this if you want to understand the most extreme genre of music and need a place to start.
Forget High School Musical! This is a soundtrack!.......2006-05-05
Death and grind noobs...listen up. Maybe you have heard some death metal in your life. But, this compilation/soundtrack is the best compilation for the start of your death metal collection. Everybody is here. From Napalm Death to Cannibal Corpse to Morbid Angel, all the classics that have refined death metal and grind are here. This goes in collaboration with the great book by author Albert Mudrian, who wrote about the history of these two genre's in detail in his book "Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal & Grindcore". If you are a noob, and you don't know where to start in this big world of death metal, both this compilation and that book could give you a huge overview of the genres. All of the artists on here somehow influenced, started or pioneered death metal or grindcore. This is more of a death metal compilation, because with grind, there are only really 4-5 good bands (and three of them are here). The sub-genre's are also included, like gore-grind, melodic death metal and even some prog-metal. Compiler Albert Mudrian really knows good death and grind, because I don't even think I could have made a compilation this good.
The compilation starts off with Napalm Death's "Scum" from the album "Scum". That album created grindcore, (also Napalm Death's debut) so of course you have to lead off with that. That was the perfect choice from their grind days. Siege and Repulsion follow, and these two songs are definitely on my play list. Then, probably the most renounced death metal band, Morbid Angel. They could have chose a better song, maybe "Rapture", but "Chapel Of Ghouls" is still a great song. Nihilist follows, and they are also one of my favorite death metal bands. Obituary's "Slowly We Rot" and Deicide's "Lunatic Of God's Creation" follow. Both these bands are from the Florida area, and they pioneered the genre way back in the 80's and 90's. I credit Obituary's "Slowly We Rot" as a founder of death metal. Another Napalm Death song "Suffer The Children" is probably the best known song by them, and it sounds great live. Then Cannibal Corpse. "Hammer Smashed Face" is my all-time favorite death metal song, and even had its shot at mainstream success when it was featured in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
The second-half of the album is more melodic then the first half. Carcass' "Heartwork", which is when they went melo-death, is a great choice. Then, the founder's of melo-death...At The Gates. They put "Need" on here, but I would have liked to see maybe "Suicide Nation" or "Blinded By Fear". No big deal. Death and Opeth, the most two talented bands in the genre, are both represented also, and two great songs by two great bands. If you don't like thee guys, you don't like death metal. "Dead Smart" by Brutal Truth and "Powers That Be" by Hate Eternal are next, and both of these bands rock my socks. Both of these songs are classics, and both bands essential. Pig Destroyer follows, and these guys are sick. My second-favorite grind band, just because they are loud, fast and crazy. The legendary Arch Enemy and Zyklon come next, and Arch Enemy is a great melo-death band that everybody probably knows about. Nile, who incorporates Egyptian themes, come next with "Sarcophagus", one of their best songs, and the album closes with a live Suffocation track.
For the noobs, this album is a must have if you want to find the best of death metal and grindcore. Also, pick up Slayer's "Reign In Blood" for the influences of death metal. I am very surprised Possessed didn't make the cut, but they have been underrated their whole existence, and "Seven Churches" by them is considered the first death metal album. With bands like Death, Opeth, At The Gates, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Deicide and countless other legends, you cannot go wrong with this. As for the veterans of death metal, you probably own all of these songs somewhere, so it is mostly useless. Listen to these songs with an open-mind. If you are tired of the same old MTV metal-core, nu-metal and pop music that climbs the charts and reigns supreme in mainstream music, then pick up this cheap compilation for some of the most brutal stuff ever recorded. That is, if you have the taste for the extreme!
