Customer Reviews:
House Rockers Please enter the Club!!!.......2004-05-16
If you are or were in my case, a serious house music aficionado, this CD is a must! If you were just a casual listener then don't buy, pick up a Donna Summer album or something to that effect. If you can identify with Womack & Womack, Weather Girls, Brothers Johnson, Roy Ayers, Sylvester, Jocelyn Brown etc. you got the right CD!!!
This is not for "percolators", Old School Rockers only!
Jersey is in the House.......2003-05-24
Now if you grew up in Jersey especially North and Central Jersey you know that we love underground club classic hits one song you will always hear if you are drving around Newark is BABY I'M SCARED OF YOU by WOMACK AND WOMACK reminds me of my childhood and watching your parents dance in the basement parties when the kids were supposed to be sleeping Great memories!
Save your money.......2003-02-24
Touch and Go and Love is The Message was the only reason to give the cd 2 stars, it is really not worth buying maybe you can find other cd's w/ above listed songs w/ better choices.
Save your money!
stood the test of time...........2002-05-06
First, get all 3 volumes, put 'em on your multi-disc cd player, then let these dancefloor gems do their thaaang... Can be played at a bbq on Memorial Day, July 4, Labour Day, etc... or while you're playing Twister (tangled up in a pretzel position while trying to grab that Bacardi & Coke that's waaaay on the other side of the mat ;) whatever... you get the idea. Your cooler friends will scream and shout when their favorite joints get those memories flooding back.
A Thoughtful Series.......2001-09-08
Give Your Body Up is an interesting collection of discs. It achieves its aim of preserving foundational songs essential to the progression of modern dance club music. The discs contain rareties that are difficult to find elsewhere. Each disc in the series, this one in particular, may cover too much ground and have too much variety. There was a good bit of difference stylistically between the Philly Sound and string/horn drenched dance music of the 70's on the one hand and the synth-based, drum machine sound of the early and mid 80's on the other. Both decades are intermixed, not in chronological order. So we find the organic, gospel-inflected "Over and Over" next to the electronic "BRA," the orchestral "Love Is The Message" alongside the reggae-laced "Now That We've Found Love." As a source for songs, however, this series is definitely different from those "Disco" sets that focus on radio hits.

I have a tendancy to get sick of Christmas music, but this is the one CD I listen to all season. I get caught singing along, I'm not very good, hence why I get caught, but I love it!

Album Description
The second CD from Grey and Paddy, full of lyrical and upbeat arrangements of traditional Irish music on wooden flute, tin whistle, concertina, harmonium, bodhrán, and guitar. Chosen for Global Rhythm's Global Top 10 list for December 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Music that envelops you in its warmth........2003-12-07
"Dark of the Moon" is the second CD Grey Larsen has recorded in collaboration with the young guitarist and bodhran player Paddy League, and every note of it is an enchanting, musically seamless journey into the soul of Ireland. Whether he's playing the Irish flute, tin whistle, concertina or melodeon, Larsen exhibits a musicianship that is consummately skilled but never showy, always evincing his love of Irish music and his delight in sharing it with listeners. The same can be said of League, who unobtrusively but firmly establishes himself as Larsen's equal. Like a glowing hearth fire, "Dark of the Moon" envelops us in its warmth and light.

Really really good.......2007-03-26
I love this album. It's got sort of an ambient feel to it, very mellow, hypnotic, but never boring.
Fahey style: American Primitive Guitar.......2006-11-07
This is a CD that has it all. 12 string guitar, slide and good old Takoma style 6 string work. I think this is a very accessible work by Rose for anyone that is more than a little familiar with John Fahey. Of course it does have some longer pieces that are improvisational in nature; I think they hold up well. Go to the label site and check out all three of Rose's releases. VHFrecordsdotcom has sound samples, a comprehensive review AND...hold on to your hat! A GREAT price! I bought all three Rose CD's for 30 bucks, including shipping! Amazon is a good site, but hey, why are the discs more than 50% more? Please, that is ridiculous! Check out his other titles for my reviews on those, as well.
Evolution of the Older Masters.......2005-10-12
If You have enjoyed the musical mysteries of John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Sandy Bull, then You are in for a delightful treat. Mr Jack Rose draws from ragtime, raga, drone, country blues, etc... synthesizing a terrific stew of transcendant acoustic improvisational compositions. This music takes You places far and near, the past and maybe the future... beautiful stuff.

IMAGINE'S 'Masters of War' scores big........2005-11-23
If one song can make a CD (and many have before), then 'Masters of War' should do it for IMAGINE. Not that the rest of this CD isn't great (I have not yet heard it), but I just heard Parker, Parker-Namdar et al. perform Masters of War (music and lyrics by Bob Dylan) from their CD on the recently released DVD 'Poison Dust'. 'Dust' documents our country's scandalous use of Depleted Uranium in battlefield weapons since 1990, its destructive affects (permanent nuclear poisoning of participants and the environment, and hideous birth defects in future offspring), and our government's efforts to avoid disclosure, responsibility, and cessation of what's happening. The song, Masters of War, so beautifully arranged and performed by Parker and company, is a call to arms, in Dylan's understated but powerful way (as appropriate today as when he wrote it), for all Americans to standup, speak out, and stop the madness. I'm ordering IMAGINE right now and recommending it to my friends.

Customer Reviews:
This CD blows away all keyboard playing to come before it........1999-02-04
The first time I heard track two on this CD, I decided it wasn't worth anyone else ever playing the piano. That is not to say that it is the only decent track on the album - far from it; the world has never heard funkier or more explosive piano playing. This is not for those who like their jazz gentle and inoffensive. Rather, it is a mind blowing example of O.P. at his dynamite best, supported by some of the most dangerous bass playing and drumming (catch the opening twenty seconds of 'Windmills of your mind', for example) that has ever been put to disc in the studio. A CD to uplift the soul and clear the head like a violent sneeze, but don't listen while you're driving as muscle spasms may ensue.

Customer Reviews:
Solid and soulful.......2004-11-09
Although I can't agree with the previous reviewer's assessmen that it's hard to find Nathan Davis albums because "the man don't want you to hear them, " I share his frustration. Listen to these two rereleased '60s albums and you'll also be hard-pressed to understand why this versatile, swinging and highly inventive player has seen his work relegated time and again to obscurity.
First of all, full disclosure: I lived in Pittsburgh and attended the university while Dr. Davis served on the faculty at Pitt. Not only did I hear him play numerous times, I also met him on a number of occasions. He was -- and of course still is -- an historian of the music, and you can hear it in his playing.
I think he's one of the best jazz players to pick up a flute, and you'll hear that in the opening tune, "Flute in the Blues." His tone is crystalline, his breath control flawless and his sense of swing impeccable.
Pick any tune on which he picks up the tenor, his main horn, and you'll hear his powerful approach, which has elements of many of the great players, but is also completely his own. One point of distinction is that he has a serious sense of funk in his tone, which he often mixes in with a generous dollop of blues. He was completely tuned in to the best, most advanced players of the day, from Trane to Sonny to Dolphy, but he also has a healthy respect for the big tone of Coleman Hawkins. For delicacy, listen to his work on the lovely standard, "Spring Can Really Hang You up the Most." It's one of my favorite tunes, and his version is one of the best I've heard.
He gets a big boost from a now nearly forgotten trumpet player, Carmell Jones, who meshes very nicely on the second album.
It takes a serious and dedicated collector to find Nathan's stuff, some of which was recorded on small labels in Pittsburgh. (For instance, he has a moving tribute album to Dr. Martin Luther King that is a must purchase if you can find it). For his work with Eric Dolphy, with whom he played in Europe, a recommended choice is "The Unrealized Tapes," where the two of them are joined by Donald Byrd.
"Happy Girl" and "Hip Walk," though, make a fine beginning to a musical education with this excellent player.
Discover Nathan Davis.......2000-02-18
Nathan Davis is the appropriate heir to a lineage that follows Charlie Parker to Eric Dolphy. This is a great collection. Why is the rest of his work next to impossible to find? Because The Man don't want you to hear it
Two Originals.......2000-01-23
Nathan Davis is one of the most under-rated tenor players playing anywhere. This cd, a compilation of Nathan's first and third album, illistrates his mastery of his horn. Nathan also has with him a stellar rythmn section (including bebop father Kenny Clarke on drums) and excellent sidemen.
