Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

If Goldfinger proved that the James Bond franchise was box office dynamite, 1965's Thunderball cemented the British super-spy's international appeal--and further forged a set of pop culture cliches that both inspired and endured even Mike Meyer's modern, multi-chaptered Austin Powers spoofing. While Goldfinger also marked composer John Barry stamping his enduring influence on the series' music, this fourth installment finds his big band and jazz-inspired arrangements pulsing with confidence, stripped down rhythmic tension and exotic elegance. Tom Jones follows up Shirley Bassey's previous larger-than-life title track performance with a worthy rival of his own, its dramatic, Barry-composed melody interpolated throughout the composer's masterful score. Songwriter Leslie Bricusse (who co-wrote "Goldfinger" with Barry) also returns, teaming with the composer on the emblematic "Café Martinique" and delightfully kitschy "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (originally intended as the film's Bassey-sung theme song, but abandoned and replaced by the film's producers). This new, digitally remastered and expanded edition notably doubles the running time of the original album with selections that bristle with Barry's haunting string and wind arrangements, including two suites comprising 20-plus minutes of the film's concluding underwater intrigue. It's one of Bond's--and Barry's--best. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Goes beyond the Thunderball Suite.......2006-11-30

This isn't a review per se, but more of a general comment.

Most of the extended tracks were already present on the 20 minute Thunderball Suite which was part of the James Bond 30th Anniversary Limited Edition CD. Since the extended tracks go well beyond 20 minutes, there is some extra music that is to be had for anyone that is still holding out, notably "Street Chase"

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT SOUNDTRACK........2006-03-09

One great thing about the 007 series' music, no 2 soundtracks sound alike. All the better to listen to. And this one has Tom Jones and all the drama of the great film underwater adventure.

3 out of 5 stars Average Restoration.......2005-10-28

This soundtrack re-mastering is a bit of a disappointment. I like the gun barrel opening but some of the editing of the cuts isn't very good. The sound quality is below standard. If you listen to GOLDFINGER or even DR. NO these sound much better. Also, there is still quite a bit of music not presented on this CD. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER and LIVE AND LET DIE re-mastered soundtracks contain almost every musical cut. Also, the vocal version of MR. KISS KISS BANG BANG is not included. I was disappointed yet happy to get music that was left off the original LP.

4 out of 5 stars Underwater 007 and Beyond.......2005-10-28

This is a fine James Bond soundtrack. I like this soundtrack because you get a lot of the James Bond Theme intermixed into the score. The restoration is OK but some of it sounds muffled. Still, it is good to have extra tracks.

5 out of 5 stars John Barry Strikes like Thunderball!.......2005-01-17

Another great piece of work from John Barry. Thunderball has the some of the best music for film scores. John Barry has his orchestra and brassy tunes. This fits the movie perfectly and this CD has a lot of great music and John Barry fans will not be disappointed.

Album Description

Thunderball's 'Scorpio Rising' is a soundtrack of blaxploitation funk, cinematic soul, bossa nova lounge, downtempo dub, and downtown drum'n'bass that all comes together to create a hipster vibe few other groups could even aspire to, let alone create. From the Curtis Mayfield tribute of the opening 'Heart of the Hustler' and the airy jungle jazz of 'Vai Vai' to the ambient, Indian-influenced hip-hop of 'Stereo Tonic,' these guys blend styles like Esquivel mixes drinks. This is the latest release from Thievery Corporation's Eighteenth Street Lounge label.

4 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2007-06-17

If it's smooth grooves you're lookin' for this CD deserves a listen. It took me a while to find a copy at a reasonable price, but it was worth the hunting and waiting. The soft sexy vocals, drums and electronica will transport you to a new ultra-cool universe. Three highlights are "Heart of the Hustler", "Sapphire" and "Angela's Lament".

4 out of 5 stars Double-O Me.......2006-01-11

This makes me feel like I'm in a Bond film. Sometimes I drive too fast. It's super-snazzy and ultra-hip

5 out of 5 stars A Retro Flavored Beauty .....YUM!.......2005-09-08

If smooth rockin' grooves, cool, superfly riffs and ultra-sexy vocals are your thang, BUY THIS NOW! This CD is an inspiration. It made me realize how good music can truly transport you back to a time when quality music was out there for the picking. It also has the most modern feel w/out sacrificing any of the quality retro sounds. I love all kinds of music and this CD totally rocks! Not a filler track on here, ALL gems!

5 out of 5 stars Serve Chilled........2004-09-01

This is one of the best chilled albums i got, the music itself is very seductive, chilled, groovy (+ any other word if you can think of in this genre!). It was really a discovery for me, i won't describe it as just-another chill-out CD or even only-chill-out music; Thunderball guys shows exceptional talent in creating music in both down-temp and upbeat styles, the whole album is brilliant, sexy vocals are on top. The two highlights of the album, are "Heart of the hustler" and "Angela's Lament", the later is personal favorite. Addictive. Hats off and five stars for Scorpio Rising.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2004-08-13

Ive read reviews here for years and have never been compelled to write one EVER. I cant wax lyrical about about much but I will say that, at the very least, even if you bought this album off the back of hearing just a snippet of one of these tunes, I promise you, you wont go wrong. Ive been searching for the holy grail as far as the perfect album is concerned and never really found it - but I have had this album in my car constantly since I bought it a few years ago, and whilst other cd's have come and gone, this one will not go away, and frankly, I wouldnt want it to. Its bright, bubbly, smooth but punchy when it has to be, and I cant think of a moment in the day when you wouldnt want to slip this on and it still hits the spot....remarkable.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

    3 out of 5 stars Quiet coolness.......2004-07-15

I say "quiet music" because it seems like even the more energetic songs on this album are subdued. But this album will grow on you before you know it. This music, if hard to define, is definitely original. Definitely a nice fit in the eighteenth street lounge label. I call it dub'n'bass. Check it out, you will dig.

5 out of 5 stars I tried to write this review without using a single cliche.......2001-05-16

I bought this album because I'm a fan of Thievery Corporation and their label, Eighteenth St. Lounge. I'd heard a couple of songs of Thunderball from other ESL compilations and was sure that I'd like this album. I took it home, played it and was disappointed. As far as I was concerned, these guys were blatantly pimping themselves as the 21st century version of John Barry (cliché spy reference) by naming themselves "Thunderball" and giving their opening song a title like "Hijack." I found this album's sound too eclectic and filed it away in my collection.

However, I was wrong. This album rewards repeated listening. It's eclecticism is it's strength. This album goes from up-tempo (This Girl) to down-tempo (The Moon, the Sky), from Dub, Drum `n' Bass (Selector) to Trip Hop (Sid's Mellow Trip)(sorry, gratuitous genre references) and for most of the album, somewhere in-between all of these and other categories. This album lacks the obvious hooks of other electronica artists--it's breakbeat lite and uses female vocals sparingly (This Girl, Sirocco). It works on a subtle level more appropriate for a near future spy thriller soundtrack a la James Bond (sorry).

Thunderball, I believe, has a talent level comparable to label-mates Thievery Corporation. Listen to "Ambassadors of Style" as a soundtrack and not an album and you might hear what I hear--music for an imagined film.

My opinion of Thunderball hasn't changed--I still think they're pimping to do a James Bond Soundtrack. However, I no longer believe that's a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars I wouldn't really call this drum and bass.......2001-02-23

Although a lot of the songs on this have drum and bass beats and mixwell with drum and bass songs, a lot of them have hip hop beats and there is even some down-tempo lounge. It's a dope lp and the songs all are super good, but this isn't a strictly drum and bass album. If you've heard theivery corporation, this is a lot like them. They have a more laid back approach to drum and bass and the whole electronic scene. They do blend in a lot of different styles like funk and reggae but the songs are deffinately not going in the direction of "electronic" sounding electronic music. To listen to, this whole release is excellent, all styles covered and done well. Female vocalists to crazy jamaican rappers to reflective moods all in a well rounded release in the tradition of the 18th street lounge style.

    5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2000-08-28

for everybody out there who are sick of clubs and the ate ups buy this album. I think this ablum is more for the living room rather than the dance floor. for the first time that i have heard; thunderball offer up a delicious mind racing album full of tight rythms, deep bass hits , and soothing melodies. just incredible. perfect

3 out of 5 stars Drum & Bass for Friends and Cocktails.......2000-07-21

With hardstep so dominant in the d&b world right now, it is refreshing to hear breakbeats and bass with some sense of subtlety. The most rockin' track on this album (and the initial reason I bought it) is the collision of d&b and dancehall on track 5. However, that track is actually atypical of the rest of the material; instead it ranges from gentle d&b to down-tempo, with some dub-ish elements and pop-ish vocals also entering the mix. The result isn't entirely fresh but by-and-large satisfying. If you need a break from d&b a la Dieselboy (respect going out all the same!), and need an alternative to LTJ Bukem, give this a try.

Not to get too specific, but all the tracks on this one are much more memorable and you will find yourself playing the album from start to finish as opposed to Mission where tracks are hit and miss. if You are new to U.D.O. this is a great starting point to get into some awesome metal.....

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic new album by UDO.......2005-09-08

Think about a guy who jknows his craft: aggressive, melodic, entusiasthic teutonic heavy metal. Like wine, UDO gets better with the passing of time. It's simply amazing.

THUNDERBALL has a lot of metal cliches and old tricks, but they work with perfection, backed by solid production and very good musicians. It's an enjoyable album from the first listen, sure about that!!

    5 out of 5 stars Military Metal.......2005-07-17

This is album from Udo is just simply awesome.

The first day i got this, i ended up playing it from beginning to end four times in that one day. This has got to be one of the best things Udo has done yet, easily comparable and as great as his earlier albums like 'Animal House' and 'Timebomb' in classic U.D.O. fashion. I don't know why there were some people that didn't like this? i started out as a Accept fan and moved on up to his work in U.D.O., i have been very impressed all the way through. This album has that "military" feel all through out it, songs like "Pull the Trigger" and "The Bullett and the Bomb" have very gung-ho lyrics to them to go along with their sonic brutality. Udo's vocals are the harshest sounding i'v heard on this then anything else he's done, and that includes Accept. The Tank has never been the best singer per se, but his pipes have always matched the devastation going on around him, and that is what made him so F**king awesome and enabled him to maintain a career in heavy metal music for over 20 years. On 'Thunderball', Udo has out-done himself, his "voice" is the musical equivelent of a chainsaw cutting into chalkboard. The album also has some nice sedate and melodic moments, "Land of the Midnight Sun" and "Blind Eyes" are my favorite slow songs and are very nice.

Then there is the song "Train Ride In Russia", which is one of the coolest songs ever written. The russian backing vocals and acordians were a treat. The song is a tribute to all of the russian fans the Udo has made over the years.

This should have won album of the year.

i am a huge fan of thievery corporation and esl in general, and i thought scorpio rising was one of the best new soul or electro-soul albums ever. be forewarned this album is pretty divergent from both scorpio rising and ambassadors of style, which was more drum and bass. this album actually sounds much more like thievery, with some sitar and all, only not as solid. i was kind of disappointed:(

This is yet another collection of non-soundtrack James Bond movie themes. I like this one. The selections have their own sound yet let you reminisce about each movie in their own unique way.

4 out of 5 stars Good Orchestral Interpretations.......2004-04-14

This CD has some very good orchestral interpretations and arrangements from the James Bond film themes. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and GOLDFINGER sounded exquisite. This is a good CD for the price. The cover artwork featuring a quasi-gun barrel and likeness of Roger Moore is very nice.

4 out of 5 stars Great variation from a quality orchestra........2001-10-12

I'm not up on the technical side of orchestral music but I can appreciate this. Having a quality orchestra play the themes really does them justice and some of the music I have never heard before was great.

The film Goldfinger firmly established the James Bond franchise as a box-office juggernaut, while the pop success of Shirley Bassey's title song only helped focus attention on the film's score and composer John Barry's key musical contributions in setting the mood for the series. But it was the next installment in the British spy's saga, Thunderball, that stands as Barry's most evocative and memorable Bond score. Tom Jones's rendition of the title track has all the muscular bombast of Bassey's previous effort, but Barry's scoring quickly shifts the mood to one of dark mystery. The brassiness of the Goldfinger score is supplanted here by jazz-inflected winds and Barry's distinctive, haunting string arrangements; a nigh-perfect cocktail of action, adventure, and suspense elements. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Look Up! Look Down! Look Out!.......2002-11-14

The 4th James Bond movie. Tom Jones creates a true masterpiece with his title song that is played in many versions throughout the movie. With a powerful voice, inspired lyrics and slam-bang ending to the song Thunderball is a James Bond theme of the highest order! What is also interesting, is that this soundtrack also includes a alternate title song in it's instrumental version- Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Previously recorded by Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey, it was decided that Thunderball should be the title song, but this song was put in the movie, where 007 dances with femme fatale, Fiona Volpe. Fantastic music. Two stunning songs. Look Out! John Barry has done it again!

4 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack for an underrated Bond film.......2002-10-02

I always thought that Thunderball was not bad as they say, or slower than other Bonds, thanks to the underwater scenes. I actually think that the entire movie was made with real gusto. Anyway one thing is undenyable, it has a wonderful score that fits in every part of the mov, in action cues or the mysterious ones(there's a lot of these)

The opening track is one of the most famous, it is sung by Tom Jones in a strong way-it was also spoofed in Spy Hard(Leslie Nielsen).
Chateau Flight is as many people say, one of the best in the score- dark and exciting use of Bond theme.
The Spa and Switching the Body(love that sexy first notes!) are the first tracks of many in OST to use Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in instrumental(that occurs in many scenes of the movie) That also occurs in The Bomb, with some differences.
Cape Martinique is a romantic way to show the relationship Bond/Domino with some sad notes of Kiss Kiss again.
Thunderball is a very nice track showed in relaxing notes fitting perfectly in the scene that Bond goes to the Casino.
Death of Fiona, another excellent track in a chachacha type.
Bond Below Disco Volante-the soundtrack tends to be forgettable near the end, however this one includes nice variation of Thunderball
Search For Vulcan- again Kiss Kiss, theme totally arranged for the last track in the middle Barry's theme for 007.

After all these Kiss Kiss variations, you'll probably think the soundtrack is repetitive...You're wrong! If you have listen attentively the music during the film you certainly noticed the music is always done in a different way. My only concern is that it could have been more variation of the main theme.
However, it is a must-have for Bondians, it does't include music not placed in the movie, thing will make some people happy.

P.S: I'm not hoping for some complete rerelease as some guys do. I know there's not 100% music of the film in it-at least we have more music than From Russia With Love.
I know there's Bond Back in Action, but those themes don't sound like in the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Four and a half stars.......2002-07-17

In view of the fact that the title song almost didn't got written, this soundtrack is really good. It's one of those soundtracks that you like, but you don't know why.
The music for the underwater scenes is really great and it's also interesting to hear the alternate title song "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang".

4 out of 5 stars Four and a half stars- some missing songs; good music........2002-04-22

This soundtrack is a very good soundtrack. THUNDERBALL is a pretty good title song, and is one of the better one's because of its good lyrics. It is sung very well by Tom Jones, and the orchestra is just superb. Tracks 3 and 4 include haunting music that is played for the scenes at the health spa, and 5 and 9 include the music for the underwater sequences which perfectly captured the underwater feel.

    Highlights of this soundtrack are:
"Chateau Flight" which is an extremely fast-paced song starting out with calm music as the "widow" arrives at "her" house to find James Bond sitting in a chair. Then James Bond punches
"her" and the fast-paced fight music starts. "The Bomb" which starts out with exciting music and then goes into tense music, which perfectly captures the mood of the underwater theme in Thunderball. "Cafe Martinique" is a beautiful orchestral version of the Thunderball theme, and is played primarily by strings. "Search For Vulcan" is a tense and exciting song, perfectly capturing the mood of the scenes where Bond and Leiter search for the lost Vulcan. Then of course "007" which is an updated version of the "007 Takes The Lektor" theme from From Russia With Love. It was played during the underwater battle scene, but for some odd reason I think it leaves out a few parts.

The other highlights of this soundtrack are the missing tracks. Some of the underwater battle music was missing, the fight on the Disco Volante music was omitted, the break-in at Palmyra, and other songs from the movie. But the music is so good that the soundtrack is redeemed from the obvious absence of some music from the movie, and only loses half a star.

The music is very good, and fortunately some of the best songs are not missing like "Chateau Flight" and "Bond Below Disco Volante". A must buy for Bond music fans, and one to consider for people who like good movie soundtracks.
