sorry... I don't care about the politics.......2007-06-14
true... I know a bit of the history, but I don't care. This is the first "Christian Death" album I ever heard, and it is a phenomenal masterpiece. If the band name was stolen or not, it doesn't change the fact that it's great. A bit down the road, I picked up Iron Mask, where Rozz sings... I thought it was terrible. Count me in the Valor camp. Great music, and intelligent lyrics, and this one is a classic!
NOT Christian Death.......2005-03-28
This isnt Christian Death. there is no Christian Death Without Rozz. Period. i gave it one 2 stars only because This is Heresy is actually a decent song.
THE DEATH OF CHRISTIAN DEATH.......2003-01-21
This is the album that killed Christian Death and these are the reasons why:
1.Rozz is gone
2.Valor is the lead singer on most of the songs (and he has a terrible voice)
3.The album was poorly recorded
4.Valor's lyrics are all about sex and religion
Valor doesn't understand what the band was about. The name of the group was supposed to shock people, but Valor took the name seriously and turned it into a metal band.

It's a strange impression to hear the intro of "Wretched mankind" for the first time.I have discovered a world of desolation.

A stunning goth classic, no matter how you rewrite history.......2005-04-25
Love it or hate it, S&D&JC is the album that established Valor as a creative auteur of his own making. There are no remnants of Rozz's early band here - this is simply a punk and hard-rock infused goth album that is alternately rocking, danceable, funny, creepy, and thought-provoking.
However, this particular edition is somewhat lacking. If possible, stick to the 1995 reissue on Jungle from the UK, which has all of the tracks here plus the Gitane number "Jesus, Where's the Sugar?" (curiously left off of this edition), plus the tracks from the B-side of the concurrent "What's the Verdict" single, "Ketzerei" ("Heresy" in German) and "This Is Not Blasphemy," another bluesy Gitane number. Also, "Ten Thousand Hundred Times" here is not the original version - it sounds as if it has been replaced by a newer, possibly live version.
The remastering here is a bit overzealous, as well. Whereas some of the other Cleo/Candlelight editions sound stunning (i.e. Catastrophe Ballet or Atrocities), the bass is too deep here and it distorts the music on most normal stereo set-ups.
Never mind the contingent of the goth subculture who categorically deny some of the Christian Death albums out of some sort of principle based on something that happened 20 years ago of which they weren't even a part -- S&D&JC and other latter-day Christian Death albums have been a fundamental part of the musical tapestry for decades. They're not going to go away now, nor do they necessarily deserve to. Anyone who's ever danced to "Sick of Love" or "Church of No Return" or "Incendiary Lover" understands why.
An Amazing Atmospheric Album.......2004-08-14
Unlike the trash that most surf rock Goth kids enjoy, this album takes a slower more thought out view of things. Full of genuine masculine vocals, rich ambient noise, heavy bass lines, and sincere guitar playing. This album will lull you into a trance. It takes you into a haunted house of really creepy noise and angry voices always with a bit of humor and sarcasm. Gitane Demone female vocalist of Christian Death adds a wonderful sexual touch into this dark cauldron of hatred and frustration towards the meek and weak minded. This is a really great album meant for the activist mind. This album reveals something new with each listen. If you are looking for catchy pop that sounds old before the record is over buy The Iron Mask.
God this sucks!.......2004-01-24
Valor, real name Skippy, is NOT the real singer of Christian Death. The only REAL Christian Death is with ROZZ WILLIAMS; I don't care WHAT Gitane DeMone's reason's for staying were; NOTHING justifies having your name on this piece of s***! Skippy's voice is godawful; his lyrics are worse than that; the music is absolute trash; [ I'm sure Gitane would agree!} the band sounds as if they don't know how to play! Do yourself a favor: unless the album is Rozz Williams/C. Death like Only Theatre of Pain, Path of Sorrow, Ashes, or says " C. Death featuring Rozz Williams ", don't waste your money OR 30- 45 min. { felt like hours } of your life on this dreck.

Sex Drugs and Jesus Christ.......2003-09-13
This was perhaps the last truly great album released by either incarnation of Christian Death. It marks a transitional period from the simple fluff of 80's keyboard/heavy chorus guitar into Valor's more draconian hard edge period. Taken out of context though, it stands as a great experimental sounding album.

Christian death is my favorite band... and this is my favorite album. Many could say that the first few tracks are practically a sell out compared to the deep heady material of other albums, i disagree wholeheartedly. "Wretched Mankind" was fundamental to my life and got me through many bad days. But none of this has to do with why i write this review. The review is simply based on the fact that rozz williams gets too much respect. Yes, i liked his music as well, but i seem to be one of the few that truly prefer Valor. Rozz was nothing more than a melodramatic satanist.. doing such umimpressive antics as having a song in which he reads "ereht si on ytic fo dog" - ya. thats "there is no city of god.." read backwards..exactly as it looks.. not even phonetically. This is so juvenile and rebel without a causish that it makes me gag. If you want true feelings.. not immature wannabe satanic gibberish.. the second incarnation of christian death - the one led by the brilliant frontman Valor is your thing - and this is to me the best album. Although any christian death fan should truly own them all. :)
An underatted album...by ANGEL OF GENOCIDE.......2003-03-17
Most people aren't too much into this album although the track " This Is Heresy " got some considerable attention and is a pulse pounding intense goth rock number. Gitane deMone, on her second to last outing with CD ( " Heretics Alive " would be the last ) shines on the the funky " Jesus, Where's the Sugar "
out of control rock song " Erection " and wonderfully trashy goth dance song " Incendinary Lover ". Vaor show his stuff with rock songs like " Wretched Mankind " and " a hundred Thounsand.."
and indulges his experimental side as usual with the " Third Antichrist " and " Window Pain ' which Gitane helps out on. Not the first CD album I would recommend but it's a good one and if u're a fan of EITHER Rozz Williams or Valor and have a growing cataloug, get this. ---ANGEL OF GENOCIDE
Super.......2001-06-08
I know that a lot of people don't like this C.D album but i think it is one of Christian Death best albums. This record was my first with Christian Death and mayby that's why i love it so much. They have good mix of very catchy songs and some very dark ones. Some of Valor's best work is on this album and i think you should buy this one and give it a fair chance.
Gothic pioneers going into heavier directions?.......2001-04-28
Valor's Christian Death has seen many phases, changes, and mutations. Ultimately, `Sex And Drugs And Jesus Christ" was the beginning of a really heavy-edged and ironically simplistic phase of the band. Strangely, there were very few connections to their death rock and gothic milestones of the past, but there was a newfound aggressiveness as portrayed by sharp, metallic heavy guitar riffs and really prominent militaristic beats. "This is Heresy" is perhaps the tune that many people know Christian Death from, since it was relatively successful for them. After over a half of a decade of lush, majestic, flowing gothic compositions, "SADAJC" was Valor's venomous call to arms - an absolute attention-grabber of hateful proportions. Taking aim at organized religion (actually, as Valor always has), this record just seemed to emanate pure misanthropy. In addition to "... Heresy", other standout tracks are "Wretched Mankind", "Erection", and perhaps most importantly, "Incendiary Lover". Looking at that aforementioned list of tracks shows that this CD really has value, but it just doesn't stand out as a classic next to "Atrocities" or "The Scriptures". Sadly, this completely under-produced affair was the last of Valor's studio recordings with Gitane - reportedly since she was so unhappy with the band's new direction as shown on this exact record. This metallic-edged simplistic style, however, continued through "All The Love", "All The Hate", and some portions of "Sexy Death God". "SADAJC" is not really comprehensive as far as an introduction to the world of Christian Death, and it is far from being my favorite release by them. It is not a good first release to buy as a beginner's guide to this wonderful outfit. Nonetheless, for Valor's true fans, it is a document as to where Christian Death was at that moment in time, and for that it's vital to me.
