5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb.......2007-07-30

I was concerned about an ensemble with three guitars and two saxes. My fears were groundless. The thoughtful interplay, and sublime playing is of the highest caliber.

5 out of 5 stars Simple & Beautiful.......2006-10-02

This album is a lesson in the artistry of space, texture, and melody. If you don't like it at first, give it some time. It is one of those albums that grows on you after repeated listens. I bought this album not that long ago after hearing a couple samples from Amazon. They were the only ones I liked for a few days, then I listened to the other ones, and now I like every track on the album. Though, the ones that stand out for me are "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "Etude", "Mesmer", and "Balata". Motian's choice of material is interesting. The album begins with two Charles Mingus compositions and ends with two bebop tunes. There is so much shape to the order of music he put on this album.

For those who are in need of giving their ears a break from the highly technical players and music out there, you will most likely really enjoy listening to this album, even if it seems a little strange at first. It's just simple and beautiful. Neither under nor overstated.

5 out of 5 stars The big question here is . . . .......2006-10-01

. . . How are all these players going to keep out of each other's way?

After all, we've got two very accomplished saxophonists, Chris Cheek and Tony Malaby, linked up with three major guitar voices, Steve Cardenas, Ben Monder, and Jakob Bro, the first two a couple of my favorites and the last a newcomer who makes a very large impression. A large part of the genius of this CD is that drummer/leader Paul Motian finds a place for everyone--and not in just some static sense; what I mean is, that all have both an integral and an interesting part to play. Amazingly, leader Motian locates the exact right context for each of these strong personalities, discovering a way to integrate their particular genius into the overall soundscape conception, one of languidity not unrelated to that of his previous release, the brilliant I Have the Room Above Her, but surpassing it in nuance and subtlety.

Don't be fooled by this disc's languorous somnolence, most notably displayed on "Etude" but pretty much the MO of the entire thing: there's plenty of compositional, dialogic, and ensemble rigor to situate this disc squarely in the jazz tradition. And Motian's selection of standard composers (Mingus, Monk, and Parker), combined with bandmates Cardenas's and Cheek's rigorous contributions as well as his own, eschew even the slightest whiff of jazz lite.

Granted, on paper this looks like a lumbering behemoth of a concept and band, but, magically, it works wonderful in the actual hearing. Entirely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Best Jazz in a while.......2006-09-20

This ( and 'the previous trio with Frisell and Lovano on ECM) come highly recommended. Motian is recording some really entertaining jazz. Here the big group (3 guitars + dr, bass & wind) tackles a couple of Mingus and a Parker tune in extraordinary arrangements courtesy of Motian, i am sure. But the originals are really outstanding as they were composed and played with tradition in mind, and a free-ish (think Coleman) style also. Just the best jazz around. Period.

4 out of 5 stars Fine album.......2006-08-12

This is my first time hearing Paul Motian's work, and the first time hearing any of the other musicians featured on here for that matter.

I agree with the reviewers below who have stated that this album consists of a lot of space and is a great album for relaxing and reflecting on one's day. Putting the two saxes and the different guitars on different sides of the speakers is a nice effect. It allows the listener to get really absorbed by the music. The music tends to stay rather mellow, except for a few peak sections where it gets a little intense.

The three guitars going at once here is a nice, unique touch. That along with the interplay between the saxes are among the features which make this album unique. A lot of the album is rather "free" in nature. Overall this is a fine album and worth listening to.

3 out of 5 stars "Salon" (not "Saloon") Ragtime.......2007-06-06

It's a matter of taste whether one likes ragtime in its "saloon" or "salon" form. Personally I prefer the former, because ragtime was originally performed in saloons and brothels in two of the main centers of early 20th Century popular music -- New Orleans and Sedalia, Missouri. In other words, it was popular entertainment for a popular audience. Admittedly, Scott Joplin, James Scott, and Joseph Lamb (among others) had higher aspirations --- nevertheless, the music's main appeal was the sheer, high-energy "charge" of the music. That's what I find largely missing in more classically-oriented pianists like John Murphy, who, like Joshua Rifkin and John Arpin before him, seem intent on turning the music into something appropriate for a staid Carnegie Hall audience. Not that there aren't fine rags here that occasionally capture the flavor of raw Bohemianism --- pieces like "Eubie's Lucky Day," "Raggin' Rudi," "California Porcupine Rag," and "The Serpent's Kiss" all have their moments. But even on these, the dead weight of Murphy's genteel hand takes a lot of the "dance" out of the music. The concert-hall "echo" effect contributes even more to the annoyingly sanitized quality. Paradoxically, from my point of view, the best piece on the entire set is the slow drag called "The Eternal Feminine," since it's a deliberately laid-back composition to begin with, much like the famous "Heliotrope Bouquet" of Louis Chauvin. For those, however, who want Rags to Really Dance To, I'd recommend Richard Zimmerman's Complete Joplin Rags, some of "Perfessor" Bill Edwards's solo ragtime discs, or, best of all, almost any of the piano rag discs performed by Scott Kirby or David Thomas Roberts. Best single "saloon" disc ever? Track down Roberts's compilation of "The Collected Brun Campbell." Now THERE'S real ragtime!!!"

5 out of 5 stars Bolcom - Piano Rags.......2005-09-02

Better to buy the sheet music to go along with this to realize how complicated these are to play. Murphy has that special 'bent' to play the details - there are no shortcuts in this set..

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive collection of modern Americana.......2001-10-13

William Bolcom is undoubtedly one of America's most important living composers and musicians. Without sacrificing one iota of his stylistic integrity or musical personality, he has done much to bridge the gap between so-called serious music and the popular idioms that most people think of when the phrase "American music" is uttered: ragtime, jazz and music-hall styles. His albums of popular music from the turn of the 20th century with his wife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, remain classics of their kind.

John Murphy, who plays all of Bolcom's piano rags on this collection, is a personal friend of the composer and presumably has his seal of approval. It's good to have all of this enjoyable music in one place; still, I can't muster as much enthusiasm for this album as I would like. Murphy's technique, though serviceable, seems taxed by the more demanding moments in these frequently virtuosic pieces, and the resulting lack of rhythmic precision, in particular, frequently robs the music of its full effect. He also applies the pedal more liberally than I personally like. Nevertheless, the chances of anyone else recording all of Bolcom's 29 rags (including seven unpublished pieces) in the near future is remote, so this is an album fans of this composer ought to have.

4 out of 5 stars Still Raggin'.......2000-04-13

Despite the origins of ragtime being a century ago, ragtime still thrives today. It is considered a legitimate classical music form. It is even more delightful to have contemporary rags get published and performed - especially when the performance captures the nuance of the composer's intentions. William Bolcom's finely crafted rags come to life under pianist John Murphy's hands. From the delicate, thoughtful Ghost Rags to the slammin' variations in the Garden of Eden, Bolcom combines the energy of turn-of-the-century ragtime with refined classical sensibility. This CD set should be a part of any and every ragtime anthology - from casual listeners to classroom teachers.

5 out of 5 stars New beat from Mike Pinera/Joe LaLa.......2005-04-13

This CD is not bad but it's not what I was expecting from the former member guitar player of the Blues Image, Iron Butterfly, and Ramatam. The music here is more of a mixture of disco and some jazz. Although Pinera teams up with another former member Joe LaLa (conga player) from Blues Image the sound are different there are no solos on the congas. The other members are good musicians but are not what I was used to hearing back in the 60's from Mike and Joe. Maybe is because of the times everyone changes. Apparently the recording was made sometime in 1996. I gave it five because I still like the sound of Pinera's guitar and Joe's conga sound. If you buy this CD do not expect to hear anything like Blues Image, Iron Butterfly or Ramatam. I would like to see another CD with Mike Pinera and Joe LaLa together again recording something similar to their music from the old days. In the meantime I will continue to collect whatever is available on CD's from both of these two great musicians.

    5 out of 5 stars Rosario's brilliant.......2005-08-15

He's a true spinner and treats house music as an artform. He's been around since the 80's & you can't go wrong with buying this CD. Classic style with some great get you going kick.

5 out of 5 stars Hardhouse slammers--not sure what other reviewers mean..........2005-03-20

This is Ralphi Rosario at his finest. This is a perfect blend of hardhouse, female vocal anthems, and tribal music mixed for a pulsing non-stop party.None of this music is trance, which some reviewers have said. Many of these songs are so hot I wish the versions were longer!

2 out of 5 stars Sorry, it didn't do anything for me.......2002-12-12

Not knowing anything about this album, I bought it pretty much based on the good reviews here. I only listened to it twice after getting it. I love trance/dance music but this just wasn't my cup of tea. The songs seemed uninteresting. Just nothing special IMO. That happens. It wasn't obnoxious, so maybe you'll get lucky and like it more than I did. 2 - 2 1/2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Rosario will put you in a Trance!.......2001-05-09

Let me start off by saying I thought this was going to be a house cd. It starts out that way but it doesn't end that way. In fact very little of this set is house music, it's trance. Not a problem though, Ralphi does a good job with this cd. Not really what I'm into but it's good. The first four tracks are house and then it turns to trance until the end of the mix. If you're looking for a nice house cd this is probably not for you. If the distinction between house and trance is a big deal to you, you'll probably want to stick with the stuff on my music lists. Anyway onto the critique..... The first four tracks are pure house/disco. Nice mixing and great selection of disco beats. Tracks five until the end is trance. The mix has plenty of deep beats and the tempo is energetic, even the trace is rather deep. You'll have no problem dancing to the music in this set. Cuts of choice are tracks 1 "Big Love", 2 "Set me Free", 3 "Keep the Party Jumpin", 7 "My God is Real", and 10 "The Relief." There is nothing wrong with this cd if you like the many facets of electronic music. If you're strictly a house enthusiast then leave this alone as only the first 4 cuts are house music.

5 out of 5 stars Ralphi is still PAPPI DJ.......2000-06-30

I've been partying to Ralphi for more than 10 years. He evolves within the house music world without loosing the old school house ethic (You Used To Hold Me).He should get way more air than he gets. What up with that? Well I'm here to give him his props. If you like good deep house, this is it yall!

The modern-day traditional Jewish music revival is filled with artists exploring klezmer's Eastern-European roots, but you'll hear no clarinet and little violin on cantor/educator Richard Kaplan's Life Of The Worlds. Although these are traditional songs, there is a broad range of the Diaspora represented on his second album, including Afghani, Spanish, Moroccan, and Algerian traditions. Kaplan dives into the sacred and the secular, the prophetic and the exultant, finding commonalities amongst different tribes and fusing them together. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of an occasional flute, piano, and violin as well as Moroccan clay drums, oud, dumbek, and other pre-modern-era instruments, but the instrument at the center of each song is Kaplan's voice--his high baritone majestically soars, quavers with sensitivity, and rings out with joy. To hear him sing solo versions of traditional Niggiun is to hear a world-class master savor the multifaceted nuance of each note and transcend the concept of song, turning it into religion and high art. --Tad Hendrickson

      Album Description

A remarkable collection of vocal performances of Jewish sacred music from the Middle East, Andalusia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia - songs of exultation, longing, love, and Divine immanence - accompanied by an ensemble of masterful musicians.

Instruments include: oud, ney, kanun, Egyptian accordian, violin, mandolin, dumbek, doira, riqq, Yemenite can, tar, saz, clarinet, mey (Turkish duduk), tilinca (Rumanian shepherd's flute), piano, string bass, balaban (Klezmer drum set), cimbalom, and a chorus of voices.

Among many special songs, the CD features an 'eco-lament' (ecological lament) based on lament melodies for the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It is called "Lament on the Destruction of the Garden of Eden" (Kinah Lekhurban Gan Eden), and updates the use of these tunes to mourn the wounding of our larger temple, Gaia - Mother Earth.

LIFE OF THE WORLDS contains 18 songs, 77 minutes of music, and contains a 32-page booklet which includes informative song descriptions; all texts are provided in transliteration, English translation, and in Hebrew or Yiddish.

This CD was three years in the making, and presents the first recordings in North America of several songs from the treasure-chest of Jewish sacred music.

Do not attempt to operate heavy machinery or drive a motor car whilst listening to this music. A true musical journey into another world. For the full listening experience you must hear this through headphones sat in your favourite comfy chair or whilst stoned. Sit back and enjoy the soundscapes and the natural sounds. Not quite as good as Lunar Phase but if you can get hold of any HMC then do so, because it is very hard to come by. HMC produce true ambient music at its best!

To me Passport have always been known for the artfullness of it's
musical style, whatever they may be.But none of the Passport albums I've heard sound anything alike and this being more so then others."Garden Of Eden" is a concept album veering from the
overtly bombastic to the extremely sutble-that's it's simplist
        description."Big Bang","Gates Of Paradise" and "Children's Dance"
are the more "bomastic" cuts, the later barring a strong resemblance to Herbie Hancock's Headhunters band sound, the former
featuring one of the first examples on vocals on a Passport album, something that seems to lend this album detracters."Snake",
"Dreamware" and yet another vocal piece "Good Earth Smile" are
far slower pieces that come and go at just the right time before
they become tedious and boring-older Passport "slow" tunes had a problem with being overlong and dull. The tital suite has a very
        pronounced new-age jazz feel,but it's minimalism,good use of

choral synthesizers and most important it's brevity lend it a feel most closely associated with Stevie Wonder's "Secret Life Of
Plants" from the same year. This isn't typical Passport but it shows the band learning from the mistakes of it's past and trying
something new and more compelling. This is probably one of the last Passport albums a fan would want to pick up-I have many
others I'd recommend first because familiarity with the bands
earlier and even later music is somewhat important in making
the music on "Garden Of Eden" work.
