Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic companion piece to "Caledonia", or vice versa........2007-07-25

I picked up "Caledonia" after reading an inspired critical review and I was instantly enthralled with the epic, melodic Black Metal that Suidakra plays. In a state of unbridled euphoria I checked out their back catalog; and much to my surprise critics and fans alike deemed "Emprise to Avalon" to be Suidakra's crowning achievement...thus far. Not possible! I thought. "Caledonia" is superb, magnificent, etc. The fact of the matter is that "Emprise to Avalon" is equally amazing, more complex in its dynamics, though nowhere near as immediate. It took about five spins for me to come to appreciate the excellence inside. I could praise this album for pages on end, but the bottom line is that "Emprise to Avalon" with its seemless mixture of melodic Black Metal and folk instrumentation enveloped with an epic sound and quality production sheen is nothing less than marvelous to behold. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars hm........ Norther?.......2004-01-30

First and foremost, I congratulate you for actually finding this album! This is one rare piece of art.

I have read other reviewers say that if you like Norther, then you'll like Suidakra as well. Well, this band doesn't use many keyboards. The keyboards that are here are few and far between. There is a normal-length instrumental track that has some, along with a short mid-tro, but other than that, don't be expecting Norther's style of music. This is much more along the lines of Viking metal than what Norther and your run-of-the-mill death metal bands do. The vocals are true death metal grunts, not the Norther and Children of Bodom exclusive black metal growl. This means that if you like black metal vocals but not death metal, then Suidakra is not for you.

I have a rather good formula for Suidakra. Imagine Skyfire drums (pre-Mind Revolution) + Amon Amarth style + Elvenking style. In other words, this is complete fantasy metal. The music is even played that way. I have a hard time liking this album because you have to enjoy the style of war metal in order to have full respect for what this band has to offer. I would spend a normal $17.00 for this album, but for the $34.00 that I paid, it has to be a gem. I'd spend the $21.50 for When the Aurora Falls because of the keyboards mentioned in the review. Perhaps reading my other reviews will help you realize the kind of music I normally love. Do not get me wrong - I do like Suidakra to some degree. The very beginning of the CD has very cool drums and is worth hearing, but again - not for this hefty price amazon has!

So what exactly is good and bad about the CD? Well, since I don't listen to Viking metal, I'm not going to be hard on the band for reasons I can't back up. Since I don't believe that I would think that this band is as good as my favorites that get 5 stars EVEN IF I loved Viking metal, I'm giving it 4 stars.

The only thing I forgot to mention is that about 20% of the time, a normal singer is singing. This adds a lot of variation to the album and makes it even more likable. Overall, if you can find this album for under $20.00, you have my recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars TOO GOOD TO LET IT GO BY...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1.......2003-09-29

WOW, just amazing how these guys play, they make such a great atmosphere with their singing, and nice chorus, and the guitar playing specially on the first track is worth the $$ very speedy drums and riffs that just MAKES you head bang and just scream man, these guys are like, well...i compare them to NORTHER- (another great band by the way) EVERY song in this cd is just awesome, some soft ones too and yet their great, but in all give these guys a try, and i'll garantee you'll be writing the next review....
