Customer Reviews:
Really classic stuff right here..........2004-09-30
Anything with King Diamond's name on it is pretty much essential if you're into the metal scene, particularly his early work with Mercyful Fate. This is the second, and so far the last, of the two-disc sets that Roadrunner have put out of Mercyful Fate's body of work (they've also got two of these sets of KD's solo stuff as well).
The first disc here is DON'T BREAK THE OATH, the band's second album and the last full length that the original group would put out before King Diamond left to pursue a solo work. It may not scale the heights of the first album MELISSA, but there are some songs that you can't live without. "Dangerous Meeting," "Desecration of Souls," "Gypsy," and "Come to the Sabbath" are the obligatory classics here, but really there's not a bad song to be found. "Oath" is an epic combination of virtuoso instrumentation, superb songwriting and satanic postering. While King Diamond's vocals are usually the focus of alot of these songs (and doubtless they're unique and draw a lot of attention to themselves), the rest of the band are just as impressive here. Just check out those guitar harmonics on "Nightmare," for instance... classic stuff right there.
The second disc of this set is RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE, which is basically a collection of B-sides, alternate versions of songs, etc. The most famous songs here are "Curse of the Pharaohs" and "Corpse Without a Soul," and while none of these versions outshines the original, they're great to have. Some of the material is so superb that you're compelled to wonder just why these weren't included on either MELISSA or DON'T BREAK THE OATH. "Burning the Cross" and "Return of the Vampire" are especially excellent. The rest is pretty fascinating stuff... "M.D.A." is about an alien invasion, of all things, and is a wonderful curio for long time fans of the band.
So yeah, this stuff is pretty indispensible. Any fan of the early 80s scene needs to have some King Diamond in his collection, and this is a pretty good place to start. Also check out the other Mercyful Fate 2-disc set, MELISSA/THE BEGINNING, not to mention the King Diamond ones. In addition to the discs, you get some pretty cool liner notes, which while not telling you anything new, are pretty fun to glance through while you're listening to the albums.
