The Album That Could Murder The Sun........2007-01-14
Dark, cold and murderous. Those are the words that come to mind when you first experience this masterpiece of Black Metal. I can't think of one track on this CD that doesn't deserve 5 stars. The title track is about as evil and haunting as you can get. Lots of reviewers talk about 'atmosphere' and 'cold' sounding albums; this one ranks right up there with the best. There's Burzum, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Darkthrone and then there's this gem by Satyricon. If you are building a Black Metal collection or you're wondering what the whole 'Norwegian' Black Metal movement is all about, then buy this right away. You will not regret it and it won't be leaving your CD player anytime soon.
Big Hail to Satyr for creating this one.
One of black metal's crowning achievements.......2006-09-08
In 1993, a little known band (at the time) called Satyricon released their debut, Dark Medieval Times. With Satyr on guitar, bass, and keyboards and Frost on drums, the duo, little to their knowledge, unleashed what would become one of black metal's classic albums.
Yes, we know, the production isn't perfect, but it is at the same time. It fits the mood of the music perfectly. It isn't as cheap-sounding as other black metal releases, but is a little more raw and cold, the way black metal should sound. I personally like black metal-style production. When I first heard it I liked it; as a guitarist, I thought the guitars sounded really cool/cold and I was hooked. The atmosphere here is one of the best in black metal. The addition of acoustic guitars, flutes, and a light dash of keyboards help contribute to the medieval atmosphere. The acoustic passages especially sound good, beautiful even. Just check out "Min Hyllest Til Vinterland" if you don't believe me. And of course, Frost gives a great performance on drums, although he would get even better in the years to come.
One thing I find fascinating about this cd is that no lyrics were in the booklet, and they aren't found online anyway, leaving them a total mystery. That's an awesome little nuance to this cd, although I can understand a good bit of what he says (anyone can, you just have to listen carefully). Anyway, my favorite tracks are "Walk the Path of Sorrow", "Min Hyllest Til Vinterland," and "In to the Mighty Forest," although every track is solid, and no skipping is necessary. For a great effect, listen to this cd on a dark, cloudy winter day, that really brings out the atmosphere well. If you want more like this, Check out Satyricons next two full lengths, The Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina, Behemoth's Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic), and Ulver's Nattens Madrigal. Enjoy.
I hate most black metal..........2006-05-13
But this stuff is insanely talented, and doesn't fall into the pitfalls that most black metal bands do. Yes, the double bass never lets up. Yes, the vocals are more screamed than actually sung. Yes, the guitars are heavily distorted. But along with all of the above, they manage to incorporate midevial influences, and work wonders with the black metal sound. I would give this 3 stars alone for effort. Than I give the next one for accomplishing what they set out to do, giving us an extreme, yet genuinely experimental, artifact of metal.
7 stars.......2006-03-27
This is a disturbing, intensely pure work.
Belongs on any serious music lover's open-minded shelf.
An Astounding Effort From One of Norway's Finest.......2006-03-19
Simply put, this album is perfect. Now, "perfect" is not an adjective I use with an frequency, especially when it comes to music. I am very picky, and can usually find a flaw somewhere, even in my favorite albums. But not this one. I can honestly say, every note, every syllable, every second of every track on this album is done to perfection. In my opinion, Satyricon never topped this release. It is epic, majestic, and beautiful, while at the same time as brutally visceral as you could want. Satyr gave his best vocal performance here, and it is very chilling indeed. The riffs and melodies are very cold and wintry, as well as dark and, well, medieval! Frost gives an excellent drum performance, and shows us the brilliant drummer we all know he is. This album is so ridiculously full of atmosphere, it makes even Darkthrone seem sterile. There is a generous use of acoustic guitars on this release, and I think they are even more artistic and well-used than even the acoustic parts on "Blood Fire Death." There is a light sprinkling of keyboards on this release, generally in the form of ambient soundscapes or wind-sounding effects, but they by no means overpower any of the other instruments (think "In the Nightside Eclipse" instead of "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk.")And flutes! There are flutes used on two tracks on this album, and they fit perfectly. Especially on the title track, perhaps my favorite song of all time. It begins with about 2:30 of harsh black metal, then goes into an acoustic passage, and then more black metal, and then another acoustic passage, where the flute shows up for the first time, and presents us with a very folk-ish medieval solo. Then more black metal, and another flute/acoustic passage, then a last black metal passage. Finally, to close the song there is a return of the flute, playing a very simple, yet effective, medieval melody. Astounding! Certainly this album should be in the collections of all who call themselves fans of black metal or folk metal, as it is a brilliant album. Also check out their second release, "The Shadowthrone" which is also perfect, though i slightly prefer this one.

dark medieval times!!!!!!!.......2006-04-13
I really shouldnt write a review for this cd because I dont own it yet. However a friend burnt me the title track "Dark Medieval Times" and it is so awsome that I feel comfortable enough recommending the entire cd. I hope the rest of the cd lives up to that song. I especially like the flute instrumental in this song. It really has a medieval aptmosphere. It makes me want to start chasing people down the road on horseback with a jousting stick. I cant wait to buy this cd.
Must have........2005-05-20
Satyricon was always placed amongst "emperor,Mayhem,Immotal"in the ranks of the Black metal elite, and for good reason.Back in the early 90s they released this little number known as dark Medieval Times. What does it sound like?Exactly what its titled as.Its dark, its atmospheric and satyr can actually play guitar. The production is poor and really adds to the atmosphere of the album giving it a feel of misty black forests. Its a shame they followed the same path as dimmu(Except that dimmu still make decent music and didnt tour with slipknot)because they would have gone down alongside Mayhem and bathory as pioneers.
Medieval Sorrow.......2005-05-05
You're about to take a ride of 45 minutes to the Medieval Epoch and feel the brilliantly created atmosphere of sorrow of these far away times, when children of North Nature, united with the forest and lakes, were violently, abruptly christianised. You can almost feel the souls screaming through the whole ride, which is that album...
Naturally, the album is very good. Stylically this is pure black metal, old-schooled (i.e., not based on image or some sh¤t like that, like some of mercenary "gothic"-looking heavy metal popular bands, but first of all based on a true SPIRIT), primitive as it may seem for a first time, but extremely beautiful in its Northern Atmosphere. Don't be mistaken, REAL black-metal is NOT all "screams and blast-beats"; listen to this album and you will understand why. Heavy riffs are going here perfectly well with medieval pipes and acoustic guitars.
A unfortunatly lesser known classic.......2005-04-25
Satyricon in 1993 released their first album, and it stands just behind their second, "The Shadowthrone" as being their best album. "Dark Medieval Times" is supposed to be dedicated to olden times, from the Viking Age to the Middle Ages, and has a suitably folk and olden feel to it. Very often Satyr will break down the black metal parts into acoustic folk sections, and other times the black metal parts will fade out to flutes and other folk instruments. The total feel is rough and dark and very medieval, so the band did their job.
The drums are pretty tribal, with tom hits which remind me of Joy Division circa-Closer, though with more of a dark and ferocious pagan feel, like Graveland. Also like Graveland, Satyricon use keyboards to an interesitng effect, meaning they use keyboards to bring folk melodies and pagan atmosphere to the music, making as great of a use of keyboards in Black Metal as Emperor on "in The nightside Eclipse".
The sound is a little rough, not as warm and clear as Shadowthrone, but with a more Darkthrone like production ethic. Meaning very heavily transitor distortion on the guitar and a strange echo sound, which is like Under a Funeral Moon by Darkthrone and also Hammerheart by Bathory.
The cover is pretty cool, reminding me of the artwork that was done for the Warhammer figurine board game. It shows a warrior/king in front of a castle, and perfectly displays the concept behind the record.
I have to suggest this album highly to any fan of early black metal, in particular Burzum, Graveland and very early Emperor and even Darkthrone (spiritual blood brothers to Satyricon). Buy this! (maybe not at amazon.com though I got the cd for 12 dollars at www.theendrecords.com)
its Masterpies what could be said more!.......2004-09-17
This is really unique album. May I say the most majestic of them all. Not a lot of bands can come up with such a catchy songs here, dont think so, but there few out there, just got to get deeper. Anyway this would ranked in top 5 by black metal maniacs. Oh yea and avoid later material by Satyricon at all cost. hehe trust me.

This CD is unlike any other CD I currently own. I don't tend to this it so amazingly aesthetically superior to most of my collection, but it fulfills something that many other albums cannot. Satyricon, at this point and at other times, only had two members - Satyr and Frost. Satyr, although basically the mastermind behind the operation, gets ample help from Frost's grand percussion work. The drumming is surprisingly good for the most part, and considering the minimalist sound, it is very key to the music. Satyr, however, does many things to give "Dark Medieval Times" its unique atmosphere. The production emphasizes the bleakness of the music, while still be atmospheric. It expands, rather than contracts. The lyrics go on the sound of the music, and not the other way around. They are fitting, along with Satyr's vocals, and do not interfere in any way. Along with electric guitar and bass, Satyr also plays some great acoustic guitar that mixes on a few of the tracks. It is extremely potent in its small doses when in contrast to the cacophony of other parts of the album. Also, one of the greatest additions on this album is the inclusion of the flute. It's work on the title track are always astounding. If you haven't gotten the spiritual and honest openings of black metal influence before, the song "Dark Medieval Times" might allow you to see otherwise. The whole album definitely has a vibe. And it's a good one too. Might as bring it back to dark medieval times...
