Confrontation.......2007-07-27
Bob Marley is #1 This cd is just more proof.
A very fun and enjoyable selection of songs & music.
Rastaman Live Up!.......2007-07-17
Reggae is angry protest music from the ghetto. It is also the gospel music of the Rastafari religion, founded by Marcus Garvey. Funny it is also the sound of sun, surf and sea.
This album, released posthumously in 1983, two years after Bob Marley's passing has an uplifting beat and interesting lyrics, from the 1983 smash Buffalo Soldier to the fast rythymmed `Mix up, Mix Up', the story of the Jamaican ghetto `Trench Town', the Rastafarian hymn ` Give Thanks and Praise', Marley's satirical piece hitting back at his critics ` Stiff Necked Fools' and the bouncy and inspiring `Rastaman Live Up'
This is uplifting and rhythmic stuff, which eases into your body, making you sway to the beat. It is a very good first Marley's album to get, and one of his lighter catchier works.
Note the reference of Rasta religious wordings to Israel and Zion, and the enmity against Rome and Babylon.
This album was made in 1980, when he was ill believe it or not!.......2006-01-08
who wudda thought bob was ill when he did this album, it is a masterpiece, even though they thought Uprising was better, (which was done at the same time).
Many of these songs deserved to be on legend!
This album was made in the same period Uprising was made.1980........2005-12-22
This album is brilliant,
Even though Uprising was actaully made at the same time,
So these are just the leftovers, that they didnt want on Uprising.
Though the leftovers from Uprising are probably as good than the tracks they put on Uprising.
1. Chant Down Babylon - 10/10 - Should of been on Uprising.
2. Buffalo Soldier - 10/10 - Should of been on Uprising.
3. Jump Nyabinghi - 10/10 - Should of been on Uprising.
4. Mix Up, Mix Up - 8/10
5. Give Thanks And Praises - 6/10
6. Blackman Redemption - 9/10 - Should of been on Uprising.
7. Trenchtown - 9/10
8. Stiff Necked Fools - 9/10
9. I Know - 6/10
10.Rastaman Live Up! - 10/10 - Should of been on Uprising.

That would of been a 6 star album,
but anyway "Confrantation" is a album worth getting, even is your not into reggae.
One Of His Best .......2005-10-16
This is one of the more spirituall albums. It has great significance to those of understanding. Chriss Blackwells influence seems to be less imposing...meaning that the "crossover" vibes isnt that evident.
Songs such as my favorite; "Siff Necked Fools" speaks directly to the mentality of the scocially outcasted Jamacian Rasta Man living in that time before the Jamacian Government figured that Rasta faith was a good way of "branding" the Jamacian tourist "product" and ride on the internationall aceptance of the Wailers and Rastafari Culture. Allthough barriers are being broken down at home {in Jamacia } its sad to say that Rastafari is STILL persicuted for there religion in Jamacia. Having grown up and lived in Kingston most of
my life and being socially aware Im speaking from experience, not what you see on T.V. In the song "Trench Town" it says "Up a Cane River to wash my dread; upon a rock I rest my head. There I vision through the seas of oppression oh dont make my life a
prison...we come from Trench Town"......

Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31
Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.
Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.
Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.
Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12
Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.
Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24
The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.
A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.
one for the fans.......2004-05-07
This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.
Sweet.......2004-02-23
This is a great CD. Just listing to it makes me feel like I'm watching the show.

Beautiful music........2007-01-10
I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.
5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29
Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?
Simple reason.
The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.
On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.
Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.
Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.
Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.
Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)
Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)
I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.
"Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09
Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!
Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.
Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.
Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!
Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen
Records SSD-357 ~ (2002)

Rastaman live up!.......2004-04-20
Reggae is angry protest music from the ghetto.

Bob gone. Spirit still strong.......2001-02-05
This is simply the first of many posthumous collections of Bobs music. It is also one of the best of these later albums. Maybe that's not so surprising since many of the songs that were compiled here by Island Music were from some of the more creative and productive recording sessions of the Wailers. A lot of the songs are from 1978-79 and are out-takes, and unused recordings from sessions that produced Survival and Uprising. Bob had always intended to produce an album entitled Confrontation to complete a trilogy of these albums. Whether Confrontation emerged as he had envisaged, we will never know. Doesn't matter now and the end result is good music anyway. 'Blackman redemption' and 'Rastaman Live up' were singles that had been released previously in Jamaica. Redone here. The big hit was 'Buffalo Soldier' but 'Chant Down Babylon', 'Jump Nyabinghi','Mix up Mix up', 'Blackman Redemption' and 'Rastaman Live up' are all very worthwhile tracks. The whole album has a light, optimistic sound and emphasizes Bob's spiritual beliefs and faith in Ras Tafari, these six songs saying it best. There are a couple of very interesting and unique things here also. I don't know of any other Marley tune with profanity in the lyrics, but listen good to the verse on 'Mix up Mix up' where Bob sings 'I still remain, I know I still, I will'. The next lines go 'But through your fu..... respect/And through your false pride/Someone wanna take Jah children for a ride' The other unique item is an entire song - 'I know'. No other Marley song, before or since ever sounded like this. The instrumental arrangement, keyboards, vocal harmonies and percussion are all pure R&B. You recognize reggae only through references to Jah. Different all right and and shows the versatility of the man.
very good.......2000-09-22
This cd, released after Marley's passing, showcases Bob's social conscious very nicely, with standout tracks like "Buffalo Soldier" riviting. A shame these tracks weren't released during Bob's life (they surely would have), as they are among the best he composed lyrically.
A fantastic lp filled with great nuggets, well wroth getting.
Wonderful!!!!.......1999-09-26
THIS IS BOB'S BEST ALBUM. ANYONE WHO LOVES MR.MARLEY WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM! IT'S WONDERFUL. SOME OF BOBS MOST ENTHRALING LYRICS. YOU CAN JUST FALL BACK INTO HIS VOICE AND FEEL HIM. I LOVE IT!

Soilent Green owns your ears!.......2006-06-21
Soilent Green kicks rear. whether you're a first-timer listening to them or you have their other albums, be prepared to loan out your ears.
Southern sludge at its finest.......2006-03-07
Soilent Green have been in car wrecks, have had their bassist murdered, and they even suffered through the whole Hurricane Katrina disaster, but they still managed to return and release their seventh effort in 2005. And with "Confrontation," I don't think anyone can deny that Soilent Green are now well deserving of being called sludgecore's frontrunners--they rank right up there next to Eyehategod. Like a mix of Crowbar, Pantera, and Dillinger Escape Plan, this album is skull crushing. It's more relentless than the sun on a hot summer's day, and heavier than a family of elephants. The drums sound like they're played with a sledgehammer, and the vocals are deep, gruff, constipated, and occasionally Phil Anselmo-esque, but the guitars dominate the rhythm section. You barely hear any actual guitar notes or riffs, you just hear a mind numbing wall of "dirty" sounding, intensely downtuned and distorted guitar noise. And, whether opting for rapid-fire rhythms ("Scream Trapped Under Water" has pounding, machine gun drums, and "12 Oz. Prophet" has a jackhammer rhythm), or slowly grinding songs, the whole album is equally as brutal. Highlights include the scorching seventh track, "This Glass House of Broken Words" (which sounds like you're sitting in between two opposing ships firing cannons at each other), the b-b-brutal "Theory of Pride in Tragedy," the circular, buzzsaw guitars and walloping drums on "They Lie to Hide the Truth," and the churning, steam rolling album closer, "Permanent Solution to a Temporary Problem." Not many C.D.'s of this genre were released in 2005, but between this album and Crowbar's "Lifesblood for the Downtrodden," "Confrontation" definitely takes the cake for the best sludge/doom metal album of the year.
Soilent Green will murder your soul.......2006-01-21
You can't even fully comprehend how much this band freaking rules. I mean every song is absolutely scorching. One minute they're grinding away with these wicked blast beats and then out of nowhere comes a monolithic chunk of ultra slowed down doom riffing. Tommy Buckley's percussion work is flawless, and Ben Falgoust is certainly one of the best vocalists in metal. Listen in amazement as he switches, seemingly effortlessly, from a black metal rasp to a death growl to an unhinged hardcore bellow and back again, all in the same song.
The GD Mighty Soilent Green.......2005-12-14
From car accidents to a band members murder, not to mention the whole Hurricane Katrina disaster Soilent Green are a band that by all rationale should not exist. However, these guys have overcome adversity in its many different forms and are still primed and ready to kick your a$$. "Confrontation" finds the band at the top of their game, not only pumping out their trademark bluesy grind with unreal musical precision but experimenting with different sounds as well. From jazz on "Liquor & Cigarettes" to a down home Southern acoustic number with "Another Cheap Brand of Luck". If this is your first time hearing of Soilent Green, "Confrontation" is as good a place to start as any. If you ever get the chance to see them live, by all means DO IT!!!!! Not only do they put on a punishing set but they are a great group of guys to talk to. ALL HAIL!!!!
itsgood.......2005-11-30
this album is good. This band is amazing and they probably earn minimum wage. These girl pants wearing metal bands road crews probably make more money than this incredible band. So go support them, see them live, and by the album.

Not the best, not the worst.......2005-07-06
As the title says, the music isn't so hot, but it doesn't stink either. The singers are okay, but not as fabulous as the Original Cast. The singers voices tend to start off badly, such as the Christine singer, the one who sings for Meg, and the Phantom singer. They seem to be sped up and their voices, at times, are very shaky and sound a little nervous. At times, the Christine character seems to be whining. Not too much character or emotion is shown, but they do sing well.
The Phantom isn't too good. His voice seems to be too shaky and there's no emotion. Christine's voice is okay. It seems a bit shaky at times and she sounds a bit old for Christine. Raoul's voice is alright. Carlotta's voice isn't at all what I expected. I expected it to be loud and powerful. This one is soft and almost sweet.
I bought it mainly for the cheap price. S&H cost more than it. The people were okay, but this wouldn't be the best one to buy. If you are willing to listen to a shaky, whiny cast, but it. If you want an addition to a collection, buy it. If you are looking for fabulous singers and music, don't.
KYRA BRONTE.......2005-07-01
This is the recording with Kyra Bronte so if you already have the recording with Michael Heate and Kyra Bronte do not buy this, this is the same recording
i guess it's ok..........2004-09-09
I own the Original London Cast version of The Phantom of the Opera and I've seen the musical many times, and this is only my opinion, but I think the singer who sings as the phantom on this CD sings like he's getting choked by someone while he sings, and it also does not include the "Music of the Night" which is one of the main songs on the musical, so I wouldn't call this CD the HIGHLIGHTS from the Phantom of the Opera.
Mmhmm..... and?.......2004-01-01
I ordered this recording recently to build up my rather small Phantom collection, containing only the Original London Cast Recording and many mp3s that I've found on the internet. I listened to the CD all the way through in little more than half an hour- the short running time would not have irked me as much had half the emotion and talent of the Original London Cast been there.
The whole CD seems rushed, in a sense; the singers aren't all that bad, but they appear to overlook many of the small details added in other recordings. The background orchestrations are weak, as well, and many sound like I could have made them with a simple MIDI program on my computer. It's almost a shame to see such a great score and wonderful story ruined by this lack of emotion and input.
And we come to the part of the play that matters most to me: How good is the Phantom? Well, I rate the different Phantoms by whether or not I, had I been Christine in the story, would follow the Phantom, and choose him instead of Raoul. Had the Phantom shown up in my mirror with this man's voice, I might wander back to Raoul. I've heard worse... but it simply does not have the emotion, the seductiveness, and the longing that many of the other Phantoms that I've heard have.
If you're looking for another recording to add to your collection, I'd suggest the Original Vienna Cast, my personal favorite. Though you can't find it on Amazon, it's worth it to find it somewhere else and order, at least much more so than this below-par recording.
VERY GOOD VOCALS!.......2003-04-17
This was a HUGE suprise! The singers on this CD are VERY much musical-theatre singers and sound amazing! The music is bare...HOWEVER - real. A real pipe organ is used along with other non-altered instruments!

Great, definitely go with this and TAC.......2005-08-31
Right now, there are four official English-language versions of Les Miserables: the Original London Cast Recording, the Original Broadway Cast Recording, the Complete Symphonic Recording, and the 10th Anniversary Concert Recording. Les Mis' addicts are best served by purchasing all recordings, as they showcase different stages (as in the OLC and the OBC) of the development of this mega-musical, as well as the interesting variations in presentation and performances by the different casts and orchestras.
If you're the average musical-theater listener who can't afford to buy all available English-language recordings, however, my advice would be to get the CSR (due to the fact that it's "complete") and the TAC recording (due to the fact that performer- and performance-wise, it's leaps and bounds better than all of the other recordings). You deserve no less.
Awesome.......2005-07-03
I can't believe all the negative comments about Gary Morris. He is so much better in the role than Colm Wilkinson. I've seen Gary perform the part three times and there is NO better Jean ValJean (seen the play 14 times). It's an international cast and some of the accents do take time getting used to. But the power of the music supercedes it all. Listen with your heart people. It's so incredible.

"Les Miserables" is a marvelous musical; a stunningly faithful interpretation of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, with an inspiring storyline and unforgettable characters. There are 2 reasons for buying a Les Mis CD - (1) you've seen a performance and want ONE CD to remind you of it or (2) you've become a les Mis junkie (like me) and want multiple versions so you too can hold forth on the rival merits of Andy Warlow vs Michael Maguire, Patty LuPone vs Ruthie Henshaw, Frances Ruffelle vs Kaho Shimada vs Lea Solonga. If you are in the first category, you really want the Tenth Anniversary Concert. The TAC has the complete storyline (albeit slightly abridged), it was recorded live (so there's an unique intensity and chemistry between performers), and from top to bottom it has by far the best cast.
However, if you're a serious Les Mis fan, you should buy this CD (in addition), simply because it does have the complete score. (The trouble with THAT is that it includes practically the only misstep in the whole script - if Jean Valjean has his number branded on his chest, then how is it credible that someone else will be convicted in his place?) I bought it for that reason and to hear other interpretations of the roles (in particular Andy Warlow's). I have all 4 versions, and they have all have their pluses and minuses, but frankly, I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one. This version has a rather weak cast in general, but that does add to the fun arguing about it. On the plus side, it has Philip Quast ( THE BEST Javert, but he's even better on the TAC), Michael Ball (THE BEST Marius, also on the OLC and TAC versions), and Andy Warlow (a stirring Enjorlas for sure, but not THAT much better than Michael Maguire on the OBC and TAC). The scenes at the barricade are the best part of the CD. Kaho Shimada is an uneven Eponine, OK sometimes, less so at others. Debbie Byrne (Fantine) is OK, but I don't find her as moving as Patty LuPone (OLC) or Ruthie Henshaw (TAC). Tracy Shayne (Cosette) is irratating, not nearly as sweet as Judy Kuhn (OLB and TAC) or even Rebecca Caine (OLC). I find Barry James and especially Gay Soper (M. and Mme. Thenardier) grating as well.
I really miss Colm Wilkinson (OLC, OBC and TAC). OK, he has a unique singing style, but such heart. Not always perfect, but so powerful and emotional. All his solos and "Confrontation" just stop me dead in my tracks. The sweetness and purity of his "Bring Him Home" and "Epilogue" move me to tears. But really, there must be someone else who can do at least an adequate job or the show wouldn't have run so long in so many venues. I am willing to listen to another interpretation, but not this one. This is the central role in the play, it really can't survive without a good performance here. Gary Morris is horrible as Jean Valjean, cringe-provoking at times, merely weak at others. He's totally overmatched by Quast in "Confrontation" and by everyone in "One Day More" and "Epilogue". I haven't tried the recommendation of one reviewer of listening while squinting and shaking my head hard, but I don't see how that will help. Morris's "What have I done?", "Bring Him Home" and "Valjean's Confession" make me cover my ears or send me running for the fast forward button, although "Who am I?" isn't so bad. (I just tried the head shaking trick, it didn't help.)
magnificent!.......2005-06-15
Ok, I admit it. I have long been a fan of musicals, but I was only exposed to Les Mis a few months ago. My roommate loaned me this recording, and I fell in love. I played nothing but this soundtrack for the next several weeks.
As this is the only recording I've heard fully, I cannot give any comparisons between the performers here and those on other versions, but I do wish to give my general impression of the cast.
*Gary Morris (Valjean) - he has a strong, clear voice with which it is hard to find fault. He sings with emotion and passion, and I cannot imagine ever tiring of hearing him as Jean Valjean. If I had to give a complaint, it would be that I could imagine a voice with a little more distinct character...something a little riskier for the part of someone so complex.
*Philip Quast (Javert) - wow, I love deep voices, and his is so rich! I love when he hits the low note near the beginning of "Confrontation" ...I've seriously replayed that part over and over again just because it sends shivers through me...haha, I think you get the idea. This guy is good.
*Debbie Byrne (Fantine) - her voice took some getting used to because at first it seemed to me a little uncontrolled, almost like she could capture the fullness of the sound but not quite hit the notes. However, the more I listen to her, the more I enjoy her. Her voice has a wonderful texture, something you totally miss when listening to the super-clear, trilling sopranos that seem to be found all over most other musicals.
*Kaho Shimada (Eponine) - her voice took a little getting used to as well. I was a little confused until I realized she was Japanese, for though I wouldn't say you hear an accent, her voice does have a very different quality to it. Still, I enjoyed her performance very much. Her voice is trembling with emotion the entire time, almost like she can hardly control it...it is quite moving.
*Tracy Shayne (Cosette) - wow. I'm sorry, is Cosette supposed to be this shrill? Turn it off! While I'm impressed at some of the notes she hits, I don't think it's supposed to make you want to cover your ears.
*Michael Ball (Marius) -Ball makes Marius, a rather annoying character if you ask me, into someone actually likable, if not lovable. He's passionate and romantic, but not vapid. Probably my favorite vocal performance.
*Gay Soper and Barry James (the Thernardiers) - their voices are rather grating, but that's the point, right? Very entertaining performances...particularly in "Master of the House" (which, it's true, somehow manages to be stuck in your head all day).
*Anthony Warlow (Enjorolas) - very appropriate voice...manly and vibrant. If he doesn't make you want to go out and fight, then there's no help for you!
Overall, the performances were wonderful. I highly recommend this CD. A great recording of a great musical!
Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-20
I bought this recently, and it was an object lesson in why I ought to research an item before purchasing it.
For me, it's truly a toss-up as to whether this is a recording worth purchasing. The main benefit-a far from insignificant one-is that it is a complete recording full of much more materiel than can be found on the London or Broadway cast recordings. Basically, I was far from satisfied. The liner notes are error ridden, and the casting was not as good as possible. Gary Morris struck me as too young for the part, and Gay Soper (Mme. Thenardier) has a voice akin to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. But, in the absence of a complete Broadway recording, this still may be the best version available to buy. Be sure, however, to supplement it with another version. (The Tenth Anniversary recording might be the best.)
