1 out of 5 stars Eh... Nothing special, really..........2007-03-20

I buy MANY albums for one song... this one was no different. If you are REALLY a Donnie Iris fan, get it, otherwise, try to buy the song you want from iTunes. It's not worth 20 bux to get one song.

5 out of 5 stars Great memories from this CD!.......2007-01-10

I have been looking for this collection of music, from a singer and band who are from the area I went to college near, and finally found it. The songs brought back great memories of when Donnie Iris performed at my alma mater, Slippery Rock University, where he also attended and grew up near.

4 out of 5 stars Save money.......2006-11-11

Maybe it was me but this and Back on the Streets were expensive and kinda hard to find got both at decent price they sound fine sometimes this is good place to find elusive cd's

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Donnie Iris & MCA Records!!!.......2006-05-08

Can't say enough good about this collection!

An absolute stunner of early 80's pop. Think The Knack, Marshall Crenshaw, Moon Martin.....

Okay Universal (MCA), your next move should be to release a DVD compilation of Donnie Iris' hits under the companion series of 20th Century Masters DVD Collection. You've done the same for so many other artists.....

5 out of 5 stars Ah! Leah!.......2005-08-15

Okay, I love the song "Ah! Leah!" What an awesome song! The rest of the CD is okay, but that song is majorly cool.

The mid-70s belonged to a group of hopelessly plaid Scotsmen who named themselves after a northern Michigan resort town. With an affect on fans that resembled Beatlemania in terms of screaming, fainting, and pledges of undying love, the Bay City Rollers enjoyed a string of U.K. pop hits along with modest American success. In retrospect, the band's music is still sugary enough to give listeners a toothache; however, there is a certain charming innocence to tunes like "Saturday Night," "Summer Love Sensation," and (of course) "Shang-a-Lang." Boy-band nostalgia, anyone? --S. Duda

I purchased this for a Christmas gift for my sister. (yes..early shopping). We loved the Bay City Rollers growing up and watched them every Saturday on the Kroft Super Show. This is a great "you're not going to guess what I got you" gift for someone or even yourself who loves to relive the old days of this kind of music.

I stumbled across this while shopping for something else. Wow! This brings back memories of my "younger" days! If you are looking for one cd that will give you most of the popular and memorable songs from the Bay City Rollers then this is the one for you.

The Bay City Rollers are what is played when one goes to meet Satan and you also have to sit next to Brataney Sneers and Justa Stinkercake. Saturday Night was these bozos' only hit. Venice was a good place to be in the 17th century if you liked to hang out in church--not that you had much choice in those days. Gabrieli's reputation rests on his "polychoral" compositions: works for several choirs, a choir being any size group of voices or instruments. For example, a sacred composition for three choirs might have two brass groups and one chorus, or two choruses and one brass ensemble. The idea was to keep things flexible to allow for changing local conditions. The result, in any case, was a magnificent "question and answer" style of writing, in which great blocks of harmony challenged each other from opposite sides of San Marco Cathedral. If this sort of thing intrigues you, then you owe it to yourself to hear this terrific collection. It's a cosmic experience. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential recording for every brass player.......2007-07-24

The Gabrieli selections on this CD represent the most important brass recording ever released. I received the vinyl LP as a gift from a member of a brass quintet in which I played in the early 1980's. It inspired me to organize a performance of Gabrieli's antiphonal music. I have organized about 20 other performances since then and have transcibed 8 of the canzons not readily available in the United States. All this began with inspiration from this recording. The music was originally written for Renaissance instruments but works superbly on modern brass instruments. The music is hardly somber. Most of it is joyous and exultant, and not a few canzons play tricks on the audience. I also recommend the Empire Brass recording with Carl St. Clair as conductor (the CD with the dome of St. Mark's in front of the orange sky). The Philadelphia/Cleveland/Chicago recording emphasizes the collection of 1597. The Empire Brass recording emphasizes the postumous collection of 1615. The 1597 collection is the more lyrical. The 1615 collection is the more spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars Antiphonal Masterpiece.......2007-05-16

This recording unifies arguably the 3 best brass sections from American Brass orchestras in a performance of the antiphonal music of Giovanni Gabrieli. The Chicago, Philadelphia, and Cleveland brass sections are used here and they work together as groups as well as they ever did with their corresponding orchestras. This was recorded without conductor, rehearsal, or even a tuning note, however, this is irrelevant when looking at the result. Given performers of the caliber of Adolph "Bud" Herseth, Arnold Jacobs, and Gilbert Johnson it is little wonder that this fine quality could be achieved with minimum preparation. I have looked at a number of other examples of this music including recordings by the Empire Brass and the Canadian Brass (and friends) and neither comes close to the emotion and beauty of this performance.

The different groups played directed off the vocal and instrumental parts written by Gabrieli making any adjustment for transposition in their head on sight, thus allowing them all to be as much focused on the music as possible as they were not looking at 3rd generation arrangements which always tend to leave out markings. These possibly were the best brass performers in America at the time and their interpretations are unified through exceptional listening across the ensemble for intonation, style, and tempo. A slightly non-justifiable reason that I hold for this album's excellence is the raw energy and beauty of this unprepared collaboration. In the time of Gabrieli, rehearsals were rare, and musicians would, on a daily basis, sit down and perform music that they hadn't studied, and while these are not the original instruments for which Gabrieli wrote, the quick pacing of this production (one weekend) to me lends more on the positive side for the enjoyment of the listener.

In short, this is a remarkable collaboration of some of the best performers on fantastic Renaissance literature and worthy of owning merely for that fact, and when combined with live and engaging performances where the music is played expertly from one section to the next off of each individual, this album becomes a gem for anyone with an interest in the brass ensemble sound.

5 out of 5 stars All-star brass.......2007-01-17

If you like antiphonal music or even just music, it doesn't get any better! With the best brass players in the world playing Gabrieli, you couldn't want more musically!

3 out of 5 stars Instant playing.......2006-07-11

I very like the diversity of instruments used in this recording, and it is shure something special to have all the first brass of so many US orchestras together. But they play on first sight, without preparation, and this results in lack of precision, it is just not the right kind of music to do "ad-hoc". They would do very well with Jazz, but not with Gabrieli. Nevertheless the performance is by far better then the one of Empire Brass. Overall I would recommend the complete Gabrieli Works on Naxos played by London Brass. They lack diversity of instruments because they play on Trumpets and Trombones only, but there is the precision adn musicality.

5 out of 5 stars A VERY special album.......2005-08-03

If you've been into brass for 40 years, you probably already know that this is a very unusual gathering of the top of the top!
My only complaint is with the web site sound samples being MONO !
This album is in STEREO and really portrays the placement of the 3 major antiphonal quintets! You won't be disapointed.

Album Description

First-ever compilation of Marshall Crenshaw's impeccably-crafted ear candy.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Artist, good compilation.......2007-01-16

It is a fairly priced double-cd, although so much of this repeats what's on the one-disc Greatest Hits that those who have that might not need this -- that had more detailed liner notes and personal quotes from Crenshaw on each tune, so, honestly, if you're just dabbling, I would likely steer you in that direction.

That being said, this is the most comprehensive G.H., in that it has material from the two albums not represented on the previous, so if you want a complete-career retrospective this is it, at least until the next album comes out. Certainly nothing wrong with the quality of the new tunes; he's been a remarkably consistent performer, never putting out an album until it was safely on the side of "Damn Good."

Track selection? Crenshaw OK'd it, so for many, the artist's wishes reign supreme. Nevertheless, it always can be argued, although as this was the "Definitive Pop" collection I might've liked him to go a little more pop in the choices.

"TMD", for example, is a brilliant pop song from #447, but he instead chose an instrumental track. Good tune, but TMD is a shoulda-been-a-number-one-hit-single track. Also, he chose "Alone in a Room" from the most recent album when "Where Home Used to Be" was a tune that got a bit more public radio play. So for the non-obsessive they may have been better choices. This often happens when artists make their own track choices -- they are drawn to tracks where they stretch their wings or show of certain chops over sticking to the basics, which is fine, to an extent. So we get "Like a Vague Memory" a country tune from DOWNTOWN which is fine, but no "Some Hearts", which was the leadoff single from GOOD EVENING. Crenshaw disowns this tune (as non-cool Diane Warren wrote it), but it sounds pretty damn good to me (he eccentrified it into a very Crenshaw-ish tune).TCarrie Underwood from AMERICAN IDOL has recently had a huge hit with this Diane Warren tune for her first single. The curiosity factor, along with the fact it's an excellent version and WAS the only single from the record, makes me feel it should arguably be here. But we get a replay of the two tunes, both excellent, that were already represented on the first Greatest Hits.

So he doesn't stick to the "singles" (few, alas, were hits) and throws in a few curveballs that I wouldn't have. But the sound is fine, pretty much each track is indeed excellent, and certainly it works as an intro. Does it work better than the one-disc option? Not necessarily.

3 out of 5 stars Great idea, but clearly not the best selection of his tunes by any means...!.......2006-11-25

As a long-time and very devoted fan of this artist, I'm one of those who will buy just about anything with his name on it. Thus, I was thrilled to hear he was getting a long-overdue career retrospective "Greatest Hits" set. While I generally agree with the majority of songs selected by whomever was responsible here (and I get the feeling from reading the liner notes that Mr. Crenshaw was not involved in compiling this release), I have a couple of complaints, as follows.
1) It's simply way too short! For example, CD 1 clocks in at under 50 minutes, while CD 2 clocks in at under 60. In other words, why only give us 15 songs per disc when they could have filled them to at least 20 or so? (If you want a great and recent example of getting one's money's worth, please buy the new R.E.M. compilation "And I Feel Fine: Best of the IRS Years 1982-1987," which offers a full 21 songs per disc!).
2) In that same vain, why did they choose only one song from the artist's brilliant 1991 release "Life's Too Short," while including two from the mediocre "What's In the Bag?" from 2003? I would have definitely also included "Stop Doing That" or "Fantastic Planet of Love" as well, if it had been up to me.
3) I don't get why they included the original and very roughly-produced versions of his (apparent) first singles "Something's Gonna Happen" and "You're My Favorite Waste of Time," which are seemingly directly lifted from "The 9 Volt Years: Battery Powered Demos & Curios." In other words, why couldn't we at least have gotten the actual single version of YMFWOT, however rare?
4) I would have loved for them to have included the much cleaner sounding 1984 U.S. Remix of "Our Town" (from the UK 12" single) with the bells, instead of the original version from Field Day (even though both are outstanding).
5) A few fully-produced "B sides" or outtakes (e.g., "You Belong to Me" from the soundtrack to "Peggy Sue Got Married") would have cool too to flesh out the collection, especially for those of us who already own all of his LPs/CDs.
Anyway...if you don't already have any of his stuff, go ahead and buy this career retrospective or the single disc "This is Easy!" compilation from 2000, which, ironically, includes almost the exact same songs, albeit only up to 1989's "Good Evening." Or, I'd recommend any of the recently re-issued stuff on Wounded Bird records. In closing, for what it's worth my three favorite albums/CDs of his are (in chronological order): Field Day, Life's Too Short, and Miracle of Science, so take it from there and definitely enjoy...!

5 out of 5 stars But then, I like Marshall Crenshaw.......2006-11-17

My first cd was "Mary Jean and 9 Others" - great hook laden pop. Maybe too hooky - like eating candy.

Then I went to his classic first album - I liked it.

Now a two cd greatest! Yay!

His other collection is the one cd "This is Easy" which is also good, but this one sounds better I think.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is THE Todd Rundgren collection to get.......2007-05-10

Todd Rundgren's music career has been a difficult one to digest. He's a very talented songwriter, but he also loves to dabble in the latest technology. So, as a result, he releases a great album and then follows it with some half-baked piece of experimentalism.

That's why THE DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION is so good. It's the first-ever Rundgren collection to just focus on his great songs, and not try and paint a complete picture of his career. So, you don't get "Born to Synthesize" or "An Elpee's Worth of Tunes" but what you do get is the best, most melodic songs Rundgren ever wrote.

Whoever put this collection together was obviously a Rundgren fan. The hits are here, but so are many great album tracks. Even on a dud album, there was usually a good song or two, and this collection finds them. Every Rundgren studio album is represented, up until 1993 and his largely tuneless TR-i phase. We do get "Sweet", a nice return to form pop gem off his latest solo album.

Also a pleasant surprise is the inclusion of several tracks from Rundgren's side-project, Utopia. Again, kudos to the compilers, who smartly omit the band's early prog-rock material and concentrate on the band's catchier songs. Several key Utopia tracks are absent ("Set Me Free" the band's biggest chart hit, and "Feet Don't Fail Me Now" their biggest MTV hit), but those songs didn't feature Rundgren on lead vocals and were left off for that reason.

Although some devout Runt fans will undoubtly complain that one of their favorites is missing, it's difficult to argue with the excellent song selection on THE DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION. Thirty Rundgren songs, and all of them are keepers.

5 out of 5 stars TR: A Master.......2007-03-28

Todd Rundgren will always remain a niche player in the history of rock music, which is a shame considering he has created brilliantly catchy and inventive songs for 30+ years. His music changes with the time, although is remarkably original and hard to be copied. I think you are either a Todd fan or you are not. But even a casual fan might really like this collection of major hits by Todd and his band Utopia. These songs are more radio friendly than some of Todd's more challenging (read: questionable smoke in the studio) 70s songs. This group of songs present a good reflection of Todd's work from the 70s to today, and can lead a casual fan onto a more indepth review of the great pop champion in future albums.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Years of Sacred Musical Vision.......2002-12-27

What a gift ! I feel incredibly fortunate to have been given the gift of the Gordon's 20th anniversary compilation album Sacred Drum Visions from my wife for the holidays. It is trully an exceptional collection and likely my favorite of the all the Gordon's releases thus far, as it contains many of the best tracks from their incredible highly-acclaimed native music series including Sacred Earth Drums, Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine as well as 3 magnificent new tracks. The Gordon brothers music has really evolved in a number of unique ways over the years. And though their music stems from a native American influence it artfully combines sounds and instumentation from many indigenous cultures from around the world, making their sound trully universal; and this clearly shines through in this compilation. Perhaps the best thing about this particular release is the perfectly sequenced flow of each track into the next creating a sonic journey that reaches back in time and trancends the mundane world taking the listener on a journey of the Spirit and the Imagination. The 3 new tracks are really exceptional gems. I particularly like Faithkeeper Part I, which opens the CD and Light of the Canyon, the jewel within the center of these tracks. This CD is far more than a retrospective of the Gordon's amazing body of work, it is a powerful, transformative and healing musical journey of the heart. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars BEST OF THE BEAT.......2006-05-11

This is the perfect compilation from a great English pop/reggae band, and once and for all, the band's name is simply The Beat. (In the USA, another lesser band beat this one to the naming punch, hence the dreadful "English Beat" moniker.) I had the good fortune to catch two live Beat shows, one at Roseland NYC, the other in a club across from Fenway in Boston, and if I had to create my own "greatest of" collection, it would sound a lot like this CD. There is not a bad track on it, and the sequencing is superb. If we can't experience a reunion tour, this will most certainly serve as a great substitute.

5 out of 5 stars Great albums at a great price.......2007-07-19

If your exposure to Cheap Trick began with "at Budokan," please buy these albums. Each has its own charm and the price is just unbeatable.

5 out of 5 stars Cheap Trick at its Best........2007-05-15

For those of you who think that "Live at Budokan" is the best Cheap Trick album out there, you'll love these, their first three albums, which have been re-released in one box set at under 20 dollars. Back in the 70s, CT personified good old American power pop at it's best. Fueled by Rick Nielson's sometimes astonishing guitar work, the steady drumming of Bunezuela (Bun E.) Carlos, and Robin Zander's soaring vocals, the endlessly touring Trick established itself as one of the hardest working bands in the country. Original versions of "Budokan" classics "Surrender", "Clock Strikes Ten" and "Come On Come On" are here, along with a lot of great stuff that shows them growing as a band and rocking the house in the process. Highly recommended--one of the best deals on Amazon!

3 out of 5 stars Three stars +...Basically even with all previously unreleased tracks, three LPs worth of tunes from CT's..........2006-06-15

First three studio LPs. This is when
Tom Petersson was real good. I am
still not a big fan of the 12-string
Bass, but they actaully started reco-
rding in the studio in 1975 with Sou-
thern Girls (Elvis was there that day
in Memphis, according to the liner
notes in Sex, America, Cheap Trick,
which I much prefer since it has all
these tunes and so much more. Get it
if you like Cheap Trick when they were
young, fresh, but hadn't peaked yet. I
first saw them in 1977 and have seen
them 30 or more times since. They
were better 1981-87 though. No offence,

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation of Largely Forgotten Folk Singer!.......2007-06-01

Joan Armatrading MBE is one of those singers and songwriters that you shouldn't forget. She is remarkably wide in her range of topics in her songs. I think every song that she sings is distinctively different from the others. I like Me, Myself I, All the Way from America, I Love It when You call me names, and Rosie. of course, the compact disc is quite a collection of her contributions. She performed everywhere whether on Saturday Night Live and all over the world. We don't hear much about her but her music is still powerful at times. It makes you think. It's not your typical Folk music like Norma Waterson MBE and Martin Carthy MBE who are traditionally the British godparents of British Folk Music. Armatrading takes her music to another level by trying to bring folk to conventional times. Don't think I don't listen to Waterson Carthy, I do and I'm a huge fan of them as well. Joan takes folk to today's world talking about relationships, identity, and other more conventional song topics.

5 out of 5 stars The Diverse, Aloof And Splenderous Joan Armatrading !.......2007-04-14

Joan Armatrading is one of the most aloof singers and performers in music. She lives alone in Surrey England and she is a vegetarian and a gardener who does not drink or smoke. However, when she goes into a recording studio or performs in concert she is animated and dynamic. This CD compilation captures Joans many moods and all the songs are gems. She is at times upbeat, mellow and/or very emotional. The most endearing song on this compilation is "Willow" and the best song that is missing is "Trouble" from What's Inside. This compilation is a must for new fans. Over twenty years of her stellar career are covered.

5 out of 5 stars Artist for the New Millenium.......2000-09-22

Joan Armatrading is without a doubt one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the Twentieth Century. Her soulful lyrics combined with catchy tunes have been a mainstay on the edge of popular music since the early 1970s. THE BEST OF JOAN ARMATRADING: THE MILLENIUM COLLECTION is her third US greatest hits collection, following TRACK RECORD and GREATEST HITS. The CD contains her near-hits such as "Drop the Pilot" and songs featured on recent movie soundtracks, such as "Willow" from BOYS ON THE SIDE and "The Weakness in Me" from TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. It's hard to create a greatest hits collection from someone whose career has spanned nearly thirty years. There are a number of songs I wish had been included such as "Moves" from SECRET SECRETS and "Dark Truths" from THE SHOUTING STAGE (both of which are now out of print), but I am not complaining. I'm just anxiously waiting for a collection of new material. Joan is truly an amazing artist, and this collection contains some of her best. There is also an English import with more selections.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely worth owning.......2003-02-15

I have many classical guitar albums, including several by John Williams in solo, duet and concerti, and this is one of my favorites. The playing is virtuosic as is expected from Williams, but the repertoire is varied and includes litte known works, including a Shostakovich duet written for guitar! Some reviewers haven't cared for the "mediocre" compositions from Australia, Ireland and the Americas, but I have to strongly disagree. Brouwer can at times be difficult, but he's hardly a slouch. Besides, if these compositions were worthy to draw the attention of one of the greatest guitarists of all time (and a fine composer in his own right), I think they're worthy of ours!
Buy this album, listen to it a few times for familiarization, and enjoy it for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Impeccable playing.......2002-08-16

Williams and Kain display their considerable talents in playing with fire and reserve, virtuosity and taste and are generally close to perfect. The De Falla,Granados,Takemitsu,Hand,Soler and Shostakovich works are the standouts. The disappointing part of the album comes with the Westlake,Houghton,Brouwer and Verdery pieces. The greatest playing in the world can't disguise mediocre compositions. This is an overall good album but it does require skipping around a lot of superfluous stuff.
Get this one if you happen across a used copy.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection of pieces.......2002-04-01

I have had this CD for several years, and still enjoy it as much as when it was first given to me. It is being passed around the family, as my son owned a copy, then bought me one, and I have just ordered a copy for my daughter-in-law.

Some of the pieces are familiar, but if you persevere, I am sure you will come to enjoy the works that are new to you.

I was sorry to see that one reviewer did not enjoy the Australian works. The Westlake piece [Songs from the Forest] is fairly light and very melodic. If you enjoy it, you should check out his Antarctica music, which exists in several different versions.

Kain's Guitar Trek recordings are also worth hunting for.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous world music, in the truest sense...........2002-01-03

John Williams and Timothy Kain, two masters of their chosen instrument, with more in common than just the country of their birth. Kain's guitar teacher at the conservatory in Australia had studied with Williams' father, Len. Williams and Kain first worked together in 1992, and enjoyed the experience. The two men form a complimentary duo in both technique and approach to music. Their playing is flawless. Their duets are seamless.

On this disk, Williams and Kain "journey outside the confines of the classical guitar repertoire." What a magnificent journey it is, too! The Mantis & The Moon contains 18 selections by 12 composers, grouped together by the cultures of the 6 lands they represent...Spain, Australia, Ireland, the Americas, Japan, and Russia.

This is beautiful music performed by two of the greatest guitarists of our generation. These performances go beyond classical, folk, pop or the usual guitar "genre" pieces. Yet the music is lovely, enjoyable, and accessible to the listener. If you love guitar music, you owe it to yourself to pick up this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Mantis and the Moon.......2001-12-13

Williams and Kain play very well as a duo. My favorite pieces on this CD are "Sonata in A," "Capitola," and "Jongo." "Sonata in A" is acoustical honey for the ears, as it epitomises Chopin's comment that nothing sounds sweeter than a guitar--except two guitars. "Jongo" is simply dazzling (but far from simple to perform). However, I don't like the Australian compositions (sorry about that critique of your Aussie mates, Mr. Williams). A few other selections are uninspiring as well. It may come as a surprise, but I prefer the Parkening and Brandon duo's performances of "La Vida Breve" and "Intermezzo" over Williams and Kain. Nonetheless, Williams and Kain put in some fine performances on this CD.
