Amazon.com essential recording

The term "middle of the road" was virtually invented for Kenny Loggins, whose brand of plain and pleasant pop/rock has always managed to find a place on the charts. This 15-song set has most of the hits you'll need, including the soundtrack singles ("I'm Alright," "Danger Zone," "Footloose") and the duets with Stevie Nicks and Steve Perry. One thing is for sure: the man certainly knows a good hook when he hears it. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Loggins still rocks.......2007-07-29

This CD was everything I expected and more. The title tracks from Footloose and Top Gun took me back to the movies - which were the HOT back in its days.

I also intend to use one of the tracks for my wedding song.

Highly recommended for any Kenny Loggins fan and anyone who appreciates good music.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Kenny, you'll love this.......2007-07-17

I have been a fan of Kenny for years!! I attended my first Loggins & Messina concert way back in 1975. This is a collection of some of his more familiar hits. I bought this to replace the copie that I have literaly worn out. I keep it in my car to play when transporting my five grandchildren to and from their many activities. This one and also "Back to Pooh Corner" are their favorites. It is music that they enjoy and doesn't drive me crazy like some of the other things they listen to at home. They are both timeless music for all generations.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure For Loggin's Fans.......2007-07-13

This collection is a must for any Loggin's fan. Whether it's power ballads such as "Conviction Of The Heart" and "The Real Thing" or the edgy "I'm Alright" and "Don't Fight It" with Steve Perry, his unique voice and cool tones will surely please.

5 out of 5 stars Loggins bloggins.......2007-06-09

I was surprised by the tunes on this CD. I am very glad to add it to my collection. Loggins is a very talented musician.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-04-10

This is a wonderful CD! It contains all of Kenny Loggin's greatest hits so it's fun to listen to on the road. Well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Blue Six is the brainchild of Naked Music founder Jay Denis, a former New York City rock musician who saw dance music as his ticket out of obscurity. His Blue Six debut, Beautiful Tomorrow, is a virtual world of pristine house groove and ambient soul mood, with live instruments and sensual singers creating a glowing sonic tableau. Whether dancing or chilling, you'll find that Beautiful Tomorrow is a luxurious soundtrack for greeting the dawn. Beyond an occasional minimalist vibe, the only differences between tracks are the singers, who offer individual takes on the soul-diva template. Lisa Shaw opens the album with "Let's Do It Together," followed by Monique Bingham singing "Close to Home." Catherine Russell adds a personal touch to the title track and "Very Good Friends." Beautiful Tomorrow's tracks morph together, but with its sublime blue-mood message, grooving in place works like a charm. --Ken Micallef

Album Description

New Yorker and label founder Jay Denes' Blue 6 project has set the standard for Naked Music since day one, providing his stripped-down, soulful production - only matched by his dynamic songwriting, as heard on Naked classics like 'Pure' and 'Music and Wine'. His debut album 'Beautiful Tomorrow' is a masterpiece of modern urban soul, a blend of different shades and tempos all tied together with that classic Naked vibe. Naked Music Recordings.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Too Tame.......2007-07-30

This CD is OK, but predictable, and a bit too minimalist. I had hoped for a more lush, loungy experience, but what I found was a bit limp-wristed for my taste. Perfect if you're into that. I wasn't.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best chill CDs out there.......2007-04-27

I typically play this CD when I want to have a small, sophisticated gathering at my home. Usually do cocktails and hors d'ouerves with this CD. Very cerebral, makes you want to just bop your head to the beat. This will be one of your better buys.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Music.......2007-03-16

I found this CD while on a search to find more Lisa Shaw to listen to. I was hooked after hearing one of her songs on California's ecclectic KCRW station and decided I would try to grab all of Ms. Shaw's work I could. Of course, I purchased Cherry (Lisa's solo album) -- but surprisingly, when I bought Beautiful Tomorrow, I was hooked not on Lisa, but more on the other vocalists. Everyone and everything shines on this CD and it reminds you that music doesn't have to be as generic and cheesy sounding as some of todays pop and dance music. The lyrics on this album are especially good because of how inspirational and sometimes thought provoking they are. "Music and Wine," "Close to Home," and "Beautiful Tomorrow" are only a couple of the 14 diamonds on this Blue Six CD.

I would definately recommend this to anyone who is into expanding their musical taste. Beautiful Tomorrow has something on this CD for everyone. Pop, Dance, House, Jazz, ambient, etc. Also, if you like this CD, please check out the other Naked Music record label releases as well as the album "Simple Things" by Bougie Soliterre (it's rare to find, but really cheap on Ebay), you won't be dissapointed at all. This is definately a dance classic.

5 out of 5 stars NAKED MUSIC DOES IT AGAIN!!!!.......2007-02-08

I just got a copy of this cd, the Ambient House Dream...If you have a ambient house collection this has to be apart of your collection. I highly recommend this to all!

5 out of 5 stars Cooler than Cool.......2006-08-28

I bought this cd back in 2002 and can say that its still one of my favorite cd's ever. Music and Wine, Lets do it together, Pure are just a few of the cuts that stand out and show why Naked Music is for real. Picture relaxing with friends, listening to music, having a drink and not a care in the world. Thats what this cd is.

At its best, listening to the Jayhawks make music is a beautiful American experience falling somewhere between drinking a cold Coke on a hot day and driving through the Rocky Mountains at sunset. Perhaps it's in the clarity of Mark Olson's tenor melodies and their accompanying ghostly harmonies, or maybe it's in Gary Louris's immensely raved-up country rock licks. Or perhaps it's the impression left by lyrics that never reveal the whole story but tell just enough to tear at you and make you understand their feeling--the loneliness, the sorrow, the hope, or the peace.

The Jayhawks were at their very best indeed on 1992's Hollywood Town Hall. Their guitars were sharp, the words perfect, and the melodies unforgettable. With Tomorrow the Green Grass, however, 1994's version of the great country soul group is decidedly less filling, even when still savory. The addition of violins is a nice touch, but a misstep where the music's muscle is concerned. The guitars are still gorgeous, but muddier and less hook-laden than before. The lyrics still haunt, but they're more disjointed and less gripping this time around. And the melodies are both a blessing and a curse: more easily catching and chart-ready but with a lot less meat on their bones. Call it cosmic American music in the sugary Milky Way galaxy. Or else just remember how much Gram Parsons always did look sort of like David Cassidy. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars How to find the title track.......2007-06-05

The band's talent is shown in how they've alway understated their ambitions. Except in the song 'Blue' where they literally explode a melody that blooms like a flower, they always have a very pleasant sound that is as easy-going as an afternoon sipping lemonade on the porch while the hot summer sun keeps you in the shade. I know my kids will love it later, they hate it now, but they still get to hear it...
The title song "Tommorrow The Green Grass" could have fit nicely amongst the tracks on the album that bears its name, but you have to buy "National Lampoon's Senior Trip" Soundtrack CD to get that song, so you can add it to your ipod and make it part of the Jayhawks album like it should have been, along with 'Darling Today' from another soundtrack "Blown Away".
That said, this album is definitely the pinnacle, and the sad exit point for Mark Olson--but he and Gary have a duet album as well as individual solo albums coming out in 2007 and into winter 2007-08 so stay tuned.

4 out of 5 stars The Jayhawks - Contains Their Best Song "Blue".......2007-06-04

If I remember correctly I first came to notice the Jayhawks after hearing the single from this album, the opening track "Blue". It is still a favorite of mine and one of the best songs this band has ever done. Most Jayhawks fans tend to rate "Hollywood Town Hall" over this album, but for me I think I like this one a bit better. The music is still roots rock Americana with maybe a bit more country influence this time around. Along with "Blue" other highlights include, "I'd Run Away", "Miss Williams Guitar", "Nothing Left To Borrow", "Ann Jane" and the album closer "10 Little Kids". Jayhawks albums never blow me away, but I do like them for what they are. This is another strong effort if you are a fan of this genre of American music.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Jayhawks.......2007-03-20

Sweetly chagrined rock and romantically whimsical alt, the Jayhawks finest CD.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2007-01-23

in 10+ years since hearing a couple of fine tracks off the Jayhawks 'Tomorrow the Green Grass' upon its release in '96, i realised i never got around to buying it (now a v. difficult opus to track down here in Australia). Since it arrived the other day from US (via Amazon) i haven't stopped playing it, & the tunes have stuck in my head since. Not merely a 'country' tinged album, the songs hold more to their basis than first appears, as do their musical arrangements. It has easily withstood the test of time hearing it again now...what some may term classic...but i simply term, damn fine!

Album Description

Mark Isham's highly emotional score for the film CRASH will move you in ways you never expected. Beautiful cinematic passages collide with ethnic voices evoking the powerful imagery of the film. The album is complimented by the original song "In the Deep" by Bird York and "Maybe Tomorrow" by Stereophonics.

2 out of 5 stars The movie was a lot better!.......2007-07-27

I was disappointed. At the time of my purchase, my opinion was in the minority, but... This CD just doesn't do it.

4 out of 5 stars A good soundtrack..........2007-05-06

...to a great movie. It's not as good as his soundtrack to "Afterglow" but a nice listen nonetheless. Without the great band members like Gary Burton & Charles Lloyd what can one expect?

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite film scores from Mark Isham.......2007-02-25

Mark Isham is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers. His work on the indie film "The Cooler" introduced me to his talents and I enjoyed what I heard. It wasn't until "Crash" did I really start taking notice of his work. Mark's work on "Crash" is a mix of ambient and classical with a glimmer of Middle Eastern (like on the song "Flames"). A lot of film composers have a terrible habit of creating loud, bombastic music that simply overwhelms the film and the person watching the film. Mark avoids the bombastic trappings of Hans Zimmer and John Williams by creating a more lush, haunting, minimal score that will leave a profound, moving effect on the filmgoer. One of the best songs on the album is "Flames" a gorgeous Middle Eastern-influenced track with ethereal female vocals that reminded me of Azam Ali and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance. My other favorite song on the cd is "In the Deep" by Bird York. The song is a lovely folk/pop/jazz song that captures the emotional turmoil that occurs through out the film. I wasn't too wild about The Stereophonics track. It kinda killed the intimate sound Mark Isham created. At least Bird York's song had that same lush, intimate, atmospheric sound. While "Crash" wasn't perfect by all means, the music itself is perfect in every sense of the word at least to me it is. Too bad I can't say the same for his recent work for "The Black Dahlia".

5 out of 5 stars broken box.......2007-02-21

Although the album is a perfect piece of art and the music has a total efect on the whole movie, tha box that came the cd was broken inside.. the teeth that holds the cd were not there and the cd was loose ready to fall when i opened the box..
Thats very unfortunate but still hasn't happened in the past, I'm amazon oriented customer, have ordered lots of stuff from amazon never had problems in the past! My best regards, Alex

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best ever.......2007-01-09

Every now and again a movie comes along that impacts you so personally and deeply, you cannot ignore, or ever forget what it meant to you. This is one of those movies.
Crash will take you down to your very soul then drag you back kicking and screaming to reality and wanting to run away and hide.
Dealing with society's inability to overcome prejudice on a very personal level, Crash exhibits the ability to make you examine not only yourself, but everyone around you. You ARE racist. Every thought you have tells you that, good or bad.
There is no one actor that stands out above the rest in this movie, all are treated by the director as being of the same importance, but the viewer WILL identify with at least one of them. All put in performances well above that expected. From Sandra Bullocks affluent life down to Matt Dillons survival in a dingy apartment, through Don Cheadles family dynamic to Jennifer Espisito's implicit Racism, you will see what ordinary America is really like. How we all interact with each other on a day-to-day basis, how the decisions we make effact not only ourselves, but others around us.
It would be impossible to give the plot in less than 5,000 words, but this film has gained 3 Oscars, 36 other awards and has 56 nominations, and it was worth more.
THE film of 2005, will be in the top 250 for all time movies.

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

In addition to being a contest-winning fiddler and an angelic singer, Alison Krauss is also a terrific talent scout. She has assembled a personal stable of the finest songwriters in contemporary bluegrass--John Pennell, Nelson Mandrell, Ron Block, Sidney Cox and Mark Simos--and she has singlehandedly brought Louisiana's wonderful bluegrass/gospel group, the Cox Family, to national prominence. Last year Krauss produced the Cox Family's debut CD, "Everybody's Reaching Out for Someone," and this year she has joined them for a delightful joint gospel album, "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow."

The Cox Family includes daddy Willard, son Sidney and three daughters, Suzanne, Evelyn, and Lynn. All five are solid lead and harmony vocalists, but Suzanne and Evelyn are special singers with the same kind of effortlessly graceful sopranos as Krauss. Between them, Krauss, Suzanne and Evelyn take nine of the dozen lead vocals and with the backing of the Cox Family voices and Krauss' regular musicians, the results are enchantingly lovely. Krauss has picked the hymns from a wide variety of sources--Paul Simon, Loretta Lynn, Thomas Dorsey and Dottie Rambo--but they are united by her tastefully understated acoustic arrangements. Nothing quite captures the mix of hopes and fears that make up gospel music like the duet between Krauss and Evelyn on Lynn's "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven (But Nobody Wants To Die)." --Geoffrey Himes

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful CD.......2007-04-10

If you enjoy Gospel music this is a great CD for you. Allison Krauss blends beautifully with the Cox family. The Palm of Your Hand & Far Side Bank of Jordan ar my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns by A;ison Krauss and the Cox Family.......2007-04-06

I have enjoyed this CD very much. The hymns have always meant
a lot to me.

5 out of 5 stars Great! .......2006-03-17

As usual the quality of music on this album is outstanding.....i was born and grew up in the nountains of Western NC and Eastern TN, my mother sang many of these songs as we worked out in the fields..we could hear her singing clear across the mountain.........Sorry, i can't give you an objective opinion about the music on this album, it goes too deep into my heart....

5 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I expected, however..........2006-03-09

This CD is not exactly bluegrass, nor is it exactly southern Gospel. It's more like old-time folk (think O Brother, Where Art Thou). And Allison only sings lead on three songs. However, the recording quality is superb. Very crisp sounding, each instrument stands out. I'm not sorry I bought it, it's just not what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars I don't know who holds tomorrow, however..........2005-12-08

[Disclaimer: Gospel is the music genre I am least acquainted with]

I KNOW WHO HOLDS TOMORROW features the sweetest vocals/harmonies and the most charming performances. I bought other CDs by the Cox Family after enjoying this one for some time, but none have matched IKWHT for charm. "Far Side Bank of Jordan" is my hands-down favorite, but all of the songs here are more than well-performed. Yes, Alison Krauss is a star, but everyone else here shines just as brightly. "Loves Me Like a Rock" is a jubilant version of a classic, and the almost listless (not a fault here) "Remind Me, Dear Lord" works as a lullaby for me. "It's all good." Black Sabbath, eat your hearts out (but bless your dark little hearts, too)!

From 1970 to 1985, the jazz-fusion ensemble known as Weather Report reigned supreme as one the most distinguished and indefinable ensembles of the 20th century, and saxophonist Wayne Shorter and keyboardist Joe Zawinul were the cofounders of this ever-changing group. This superb, three-CD, 37-track collection features the band's incredible cast of musicians: drummers Peter Erksine and Alphonse Mouzon; percussionists Airto Moreira, Alex Acuna, and the late Don Alias; bassists Miroslav Vitous, Alphonso Johnson, and the incredible Jaco Pastorius. The roots of their sound are heard in Zawinul's "In A Silent Way," and their greatest hits--from "A Remark You Made" and an unreleased version of "Nubian Sundance" to their 1976 mega-hit, "Birdland," are included here, along with the lesser known classic, "Indiscretions," a DJ Logic, hip-hop remix of "125th Street Congress," and a sizzling, two-hour DVD concert from Germany in filmed in 1978. This set is a powerful primer to their "folk music of the future." --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars I hope you read this, Richie!.......2007-07-16

WAY back in 1974, my best-friend-in-the-army, Richie, and I were listening to each other's albums. Knowing that I was not-so-surreptitiously making more money at night as a musician than I was by "playing Army," Richie told me, "Nah - I don't think you'd like it" when I asked him to play Weather Report's first album for me. I DID badger him into playing the etherial track, "Milky Way" for me, and - even though I was - and am - a "rabid Stones' fan" (like Ian Hunter said about himself & Jaco) - I was captivated. Being a bassist, I had already heard of Miroslav Vitous, and I STILL remember Tony, the drummer of my band, yammering about Alphonse Mouzon and Eric Gravatt - SERIOUS MUSICANS, those three, and I haven't even mentioned Joe Zawinul (the ONLY person I will EVER trust with a freaking synthesizer), or Wayne Shorter, Saxophonist Extraordinaire. And though my interest kind of...well, "slipped" until the year 1978 - UGH!, all my hippie friends were then bleating about that pithy Chuck Mangione..."thing" that was so prevalent then ("Feels So Good" or something), and I kept screaming at them, "NO! That is bubblegum at its most hideous! Have you heard 'Heavy Weather' by Weather Report? You NEED TO!" Well, histrionics aside, all of Weather Report's music is very well represented here on "Forecast: Tomorrow," and I'm grateful, because that certainly fills a hole in my CD collection. But I am really - REALLY - most grateful for the inclusion of the DVD with a 1978 performance by the Jaco Pastorius/Peter Erskine incarnation! I (now blushing FURIOUSLY!) purchased that Joni Mitchell/"Shadows And Light" thing a couple of years ago, only - ONLY - because Jaco was featured so prominently thereon. And athough I'm too cheap to relinquish any of my DVDs or CDs, "Shadows" will now be relegated to that vague, indefinite place where I store, say, the Stones' "Bigger Bang," that John Phillips' "Pay Pack And Follow," or, for THAT matter, anything by the Eagles or such. THANK YOU, Richie!

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Anthology.......2007-07-12

What a wonderful collection to have; a worthy anthology of the most important jazz fusion band from the 1970s and 1980s.

I have heard some of the original albums and was intent on collecting them at some stage, but this anthology captures the band perfectly on this 3 cd set, covering many of the popular fan tunes as well as many points of interest along the way. Utterly intriging and fascinating to hear, you can completely lose yourself in this music at times.

The live dvd is a great addition to the 3 cd set, and I'm lucky to have it in my collection. It could have been remastered a little with today's technology (aka Cat Stevens' Cat Stevens: Majikat Special Edition) as the picture is a little grainy at times, but the sound quality is still good.

This anthology is a worthy addition to your music collection, and saves you trying to hunt down the Weather Report albums. Unless you have a particular album in mind then you will not find yourself lacking with this purchase, as this collection is quite extensive and stands as testimony to a great collaboration of musicians.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars Good cd selections - Great DVD!.......2007-05-07

I don't understand complaints that the cd's here contain already released material. The product description clearly says so. I for one found this collection a very nice compliment to my only other Weather Report cd "Weather Report, the Jaco Years". "Forcast: Tomorrow" contains great stuff from the pre-Jaco and post-Jaco years. The photos and notes in the accompanying book are very good.

As for the DVD, it is also clearly described as a video from the Rockpalast concert of 1978, and if you already have it you are very fortunate. I had not seen it before, and I found it to be very good. The performance is excellent. The cameras switch to capture the ensemble well. The close ups are good enough to follow how each performer is executing their important solos. Jaco is at his best. This is the quartet with Peter Erskine, and the performance captured here is more complete and, to my ear, better than the "8:30" cd.

5 out of 5 stars For those who don't .......2007-04-29

For those who don't have any CDs by Weather Report, this compilation gives you a wonderful overview of the history of the group, all the different personel, a wonderful booklet of photos and info, and a great DVD performance with Jaco. I hadn't heard lot of the early music and I really appreciate the chronology in this box set. The price I paid was a steal. The fact that all the tunes were picked by Joe Z and Wayne S was great!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

The team of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick came up with only six shows--but what shows! In addition to the phenomenally successful Fiddler on the Roof, aficionados usually gush about 1963's She Loves Me and 1959's Fiorello!. The latter turned a not particularly appetizing topic--the years leading to Fiorello LaGuardia's election as mayor of New York--into a great musical. (It even won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the third musical to do so.) Harnick and Bock's versatility was in evidence as they wrote numbers in every Broadway style: novelty, ballad (about sweatshops), duet (the absurdly catchy and funny "Marie's Law"), and, of course, a rousing number that doesn't really fit anywhere but is so good that it simply must be included (Eileen Rodgers's "Gentleman Jimmy"). This may be one of the wittiest, most melodic shows you've never heard. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Fiorello.......2007-03-09

Great music. Only; I wish I had a DVD of the show.....

5 out of 5 stars A sleeper of the first order.......2007-03-06

Fiorello is a very dark comedy about the corrupt back-room politics, croneyism, and skulduggery surrounding Fiorello laGuardia's political career. Oh, and there's a romance thrown in. "Politics and Poker" in particular has a timely poignancy in light of the runup to the 2008 elections with Clinton, Obama, and -um - whoever the heck else is on the Democrat wanna-be list. I have to think there are some pretty stark parallels here. But then, that's what this timeless, delightful sleeper of an operetta is all about.

2 out of 5 stars A new York-centric non-hit .......2006-11-15

This never rose to the level of a 'hit'. At this time (2006) it is dated
technically and artisticly. It didn't win in '59, there is little hope that it will be remembered fondly in '06.
In the end I bought it for archival purposes only and I'm being kind.

5 out of 5 stars Laguardia isn't just an airport.......2006-08-07

Fiorello! was basically a play about New York City's great mayor, Fiorello Laguardia, that was turned into a musical by having an overture and 14 songs. Long ago, back in the late 1950s, I saw it as a child and really liked it - I've always wondered what it would be like to hear it again. Well, it is nothing less than spectacular! It has the best song about politcal corruption (!) ever written, Little Tin Box; a great song about a broken date, Marie's Law; a lyrical paean to back-room politics, Politics and Poker; and 11 others, all equally good (in fact, there's not a single dud in the score - as you would expect since it was written by the writers who did Fiddler on the Roof). The voices are great, the lyrics are all to the point, the music is unforgettable, and, for all those who don't know the story, the disc notes are really helpful. Maybe this is politcs seen through rose-tinted glasses, but it's wonderful to hear!

4 out of 5 stars a classic, underrated Broadway gem.......2003-11-04

FIORELLO! is a lovely, ahead-of-its-time musical, based on the career of New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia. It starred Tom Bosley as La Guardia with a dream cast including Ellen Hanley, Pat Stanley and Eileen Rodgers.

The score, an early collaboration from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (SHE LOVES ME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) is very strong, and includes several show-pieces like "Politics and Poker", "Little Tin Box" and "On the Side of the Angels".

Ellen Hanley (who had previously been criminally under-used as Polly Bergen's understudy in FIRST IMPRESSIONS) glows in the role of feisty Thea, the sweatshop workers' leader. She has two of the score's best ballads, "'Til Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love".

Pat Stanley (who earned a Tony for her performance in the disastrous GOLDILOCKS) gets the cute number "I Love a Cop". Eileen Rodgers (who later starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES) sings the showstopping "Gentleman Jimmy", a manic flapper tune. FIORELLO! is a fantastic show in that it has no less than 3 strong female roles.

For those who only started following Tom Bosley's career during his 'Happy Days', the fact that he was a top-drawer musical theater talent will come as a big surprise. Bosley played the entire run of 795 performances. Bosley later made many more successful Broadway appearances including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and (as of this review's writing) a triumphant stint in the Sam Mendes revival of CABARET.

This lovely reissue on the Angel Broadway label sounds as fresh as paint. An excellent remaster job and an excellent cast album.
