...the more they annoy me. I think I hate power metal.
4.5-Star Offering that you can REALLY Bang Your Head to.......2007-04-06
To most metal critics and some fans as well, memorable, simply undiluted metal was pretty sparse during the mid-late 90's. I mean, in my opinion also, bands didn't exactly put out their most classic albums during that timespan. Just to list a few examples: Maiden put out their Blaze Bailey albums "X-Factor" and "Virtual XI" which I liked a lot, but most people bashed the crap out of 'em. Priest was basically dormant during this time, only releasing "Jugulator" and "98 Live Meltdown" both not up to par with Halford's classics by any means. Metallica experimented with their albums "Load" and "Reload" (both of which scared away many fans), Megadeth released "Cryptic Writings" which was quite good, but then put out their lowest point "Risk", and bands like Dio, Black Sabbath, and Ozzy were either releasing their worst albums or not putting any out at all. However, there was this one band in the 90's (don't worry, I know other bands were delivering the goods in the 90's like Pantera, etc) that held the thrash-metal torch high and proudly, not wanting to let their influences down. That band is the one and only ICED EARTH!
Just a devoted and humble group of guys who wanted metal to live forever, the crew of Iced Earth stood against the norm, beat all odds, and released some true, nose-to-the-grindstone classics during the 90's. "Something Wicked This Way Comes", which came out in 1998 is a perfect representation of their talent and reputation. The riffing can be thrashy, in-your-face, and aggressive-as-hell at times (on tracks like "Disciples of the Lie", "Stand Alone", or "My Own Savior") but it can also be quite melodic and emotional (i.e. "Melancholy", "Watching Over Me", or "Blessed Are You"). Basically, if you like Schaffer's heavier side then this cd is for you. But also, if you like his more melodic pieces that have passion and depth, then get this classic! Matt Barlow couldn't be better on this album as well. His voice is so well-ranged and powerful, it's just insane. He sings in his best thrash voice on the heavier tracks, but also really reaches low when the slow number comes up, singing emotionally and very sad on some songs (which is a unique and welcome effect). The drums and bass are also very much involved, taking the rhythm section to great heights.
As far as the songs go, SWTWC has great depth. There are almost an equal number of slow tracks as there are heavy ones, and for the first 10 songs they go in a pattern (heavy track, then a slow one). The heavy tracks are of course amazing, grabbing you by the balls and never letting go, but the power ballads grab you by the heart and act as a nice contrast to the heavy-hitters. Now I know that most fans are really dedicated to the thrashy, no-holds-barred style of earlier IE releases like "Burnt Offerings" or "Night of the Stormrider" but I really ask that you open up to their emotional side too. As for the tracks, "Burning Times" starts off the album and everyones knows that Schaffer never lets a sappy opener make an appearance. This heavy number isn't blinding fast, but it's a nice mid-tempo song with heavy riffage and soaring vocals from Barlow. The second number slows it down considerably, but is just as good. "Melancholy" is a very emotional song with some great guitar strumming and some of those "Sad" vocals from Matt. However, at the chorus, the heaviness is cranked up as the power chords rip through the speakers. Barlow then hit those high notes and really adds a lot to this hit. EVERY song is amazing, and while I don't have time to talk about all of them, I must mention the "Something Wicked" trilogy. What an amazing, all-out incredible way to end this masterpiece. All three songs (Prophesy, Birth of the Wicked, and The Coming Curse) are perfect thrash tracks, complete with fast-paced riffs, double-bass mania, and above-average vocals from Matt. They have their slow and emotional moments as well like the beginning two minutes of Prophesy, and the opening, classical piano piece on The Coming Curse. Just great, undiluted metal!
Get this plus every other Iced Earth classic. You won't regret it!
A must have.......2007-03-21
Ths is one of their better albums. A must have for any metal fan. It runs the full musical range from very fast and heavy(Stand Alone), to softer (Watching Over Me). You Will NOT be Disappointed!!
Very Wicked Music.......2007-01-08
This is without a doubt, Iced Earth's best album. Every song on this album is enjoyable and then it has many great masterpieces. The vocals, lyrics, guitars, bass, and drums shine on this album. Heavy Metal with true musicianship. The best songs:
Burning Times: This song is slow and heavy. The vocals rule and the lyrics send chills down my spine. The chiming of the bells at the beginning and end sound really cool
Disciples of the Lie: This song is fast and heavy and will get your head bangin. It has a very haunting keyboard solo in the middle.
Consequences: this song is beautiful, a slow and soft one with great vocals
Prophecy: The best song in the trilogy and possibly the best on the album. It starts eerie and soft and then there is a short bass the solo that kicks this song up to speed. Great lyrics, vocals, and guitar work
This album is a must have for any metal fan
Iced Earth's best CD!!!.......2006-11-11
As an Iced Earth fan who owns all of their CDs, i must say that this is their best. From start to finish this album is filled with incredible songs, and just has such a complete feel to it. This album has something for every metal fan of any genre. Melancholy is incredible, as is the trilogy. Great place to start if your new to the band. One of the best metal cds ever recorded.

Customer Reviews:
It's Wicked.......2005-09-16
Can't recommend this album enough. The beats are organic with a tasteful use of well placed samples. Breakbeat-esque.
There is also a lot of horns on this album, which just kill it. They add so much IMO.
the best herbaliser album i think.......2004-07-15
this is the best herbaliser album i think...
This Album...got me completely hooked on The 'Herbal One'.........2004-02-14
Herbaliser's fourth album, is a tremendous effort that blends the "Stoned" grooves of early Kruder & Dorfmeister, with his own Ninja-tune styled underground Trip-hop.....Phi Life Cypher on "Distinguished Jamaican English, and MF Doom on "It Ain't Nuttin"...as good as any of his Ninja-tune stablemates, yet star of the show is "Wildflower" on the exceptional "Good Girl Gone Bad".....Who explodes on the mic instantly, and Rap's & freestyles with such a unrelenting "Ragga / Hip-hop" sonic assault that (given on this evidence) it's arguably superior to the already tremendous "Ms Dynamite"......"Wildflower's" drops lyrical lines like "There are so many different sides to a person's Com-plex!!.....When you try & Box me in, I get Vexx!!!.....Don't bother put me in no, "Pigeon Hole".....Especially when It seems like I'm on such a Roll", in a confident yet unabashed style of many a pirate radio M.C., but to not give at least a mention of the Trip-Hop/Jazz Vocalist fusion of the title track "Something Wicked This Way Comes" would be foolish, and it opens the album beautifully and illustrates `The Herabliser's' ear for a incredibly catchy hook, that simply cannot be ignored. The Herbaliser through his excellent Trip-hop psychedelia, and forsight into experimentation continues "Ninja-tune's" unblemished record of astonishing output.
Great!.......2002-11-29
Herbaliser is possibly the best group in the incredibly deep talent reservoir of the Ninja Tune label and this CD proves it. So far it is their best one, with great raps and jazzy, spy soundtrack-like music. Probably a best way to get to know this band. Get it. Anything from Ninja Tune is worth buying.
Something boring this way comes.......2002-05-27
I really liked "Very Mercenary", so I was disappointed when I put this disc in, only to find that the technical wizardry so prevalent on VM is lacking here. In fact, it's non-existant. Every single song ends with you suddenly remembering that you're listening to music. It just falls into the background, where I guess it belongs. Don't get me wrong. It isn't bad music. It's just nothing special. Rip it from a friend, but don't waste your hard earned money on it like I did. I miss my money.

Awesome album!.......2001-04-25
I absolutely love this album! I didn't really find anything too bad about the vocals, except that at times they were hard to understand (but every metal album suffers from this a little). My favorite songs are Stand Alone (track 5) and Consequences (Track 6). Also of note is track 3 (can't remember the name offhand).
Where has this CD been all my life?.......2001-03-30
Buy this CD. That's all there is to it. I don't care if you don't like metal, are in church more than you are in bed, or have never even heard the term "Power Metal". This is the best of everything, save maybe vocal style. If I have a single gripe about this band, it is only that Barlow's singing takes awhile to get used to. Other than that, the band and especially this recording are both at the top of their respective games. If nothing else, listen to the last song, a powerhouse masterpiece called 'The Coming Curse". The intro is beautiful enough to make me want learn piano (seriously!) and the riff afterwards is so fast, it's hard to keep up with. Don't let that statement make you think that these guys are just speed metal freaks. Everything is as tight and controlled as a finely tuned machine, and everything is meticulously played. There are no more than 1 or 2 filler songs on this CD, each other is unique and thunderingly gorgeous. There is no excuse for the absence of this CD from your collection.
Pure Power Metal.......2000-06-20
This is definitely a great Iced Earth album. You get everything: acoustics, galloping riffs, awesome drumming, solid bass lines, and the best vocals metal has to offer. Superb American power metal! Call it thrash, call it speed metal; this album is awesome, not their best but.....
Stayed hard unlike so many metal groups today..........1999-06-27
I really like this cd, It took me a few listens to get really into it. Once inside I found the complexed music writing style of Jon Schaffer and the unbelivable vocals of Matthew Barlow. The whole cd is great and the bonus track is awesome. If you liked the other cd's you'll love this one as well. Don't miss it!!
True metal..........1999-06-13
Well, personally I don't think that this album is the best Iced Earth album. This album is something that many Helloween fan would call true metal. If you like power/thrash metal, this album is for you

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Something Wicked....Great Album!!! ... 4 stars!!!!.......2007-01-24
I don't know why there are so many bad reviews about this album!!! Every song on this album is incredible. Yes they got two musicians on Something Wicked and they bring a new and superior sound to Nuclear Assault's table. It has awesome solos and plain/simple rock out. This album suffered like so many at this time...early 90's. Metallica epic self titled album was still reigning its crown and the Alternative music had huge stake in the rock community. Nuclear Assault suffered from sales and band member changes and still carried the metal torch. This album is strong and I disagree on the types negative of reviews. Listen to this album..its little different from Nuclear Assault's previous albums, but very worthy. Check this one out!!!

The band died in '91 yet the corpse of it still moved into '93.......2005-09-12
When Dan Lilker and Anthony Bramante left N.A. in '92, one would have thought that the rest of the band would have called it quits. Not only did Nuclear Assault not quit after 1991's terrible album "Out of Order", they continued on with replacements AND RECORDED AN ABLUM!
The sound Nuclear Assault returned with a sludgier sound more like early 90s Megadeth or Testament -not the classic Nuclear Assault sound of Thrash with Hardcore overtones. The songs range from bad to worse, but there are some okay points.
John Connelly, the singer who usually sounds like a rabid barking hyenia, actually has a much more melodic voice here. The drumming of Glenn Evans is pedestrian and half the time he isn't trying to make anything worth listening to. The guitars are rather uninteresting, most of the songs sound like the guitars off of Megadeth's "Countdown to Extinction".
The one funny song is "Poetic Justice" with the hilarious line "Yo, a word, to tell my friends, hey, it's how I say 'Hello'...Car, a thing, a way to get around town..." Approach with radioactive gloves. If you are new to the band, get any of their pre-1991 albums. Only the N.A. completist would want this. What a disgrace, should've changed their name. At least they came back 12 years later with the awesome "Third World Genocide".
Nuclear Assault... More Like Nuclear Wimper.......2005-01-07
Nuclear Assault had some great records. This is not one of them and is possibly their worst record. There are no good songs here. I think they were not even trying to make a good record.
unbelivable.......2003-03-09
this is the best album they ever made the song something wicked is there best to me .

AAAHHH!.......2002-08-05
I first heard of these guys through Amazon and figured I'd look into them. I really dug the guitars and thought that the guy was a very good rapper.... Then I found out what he was rapping about. The entire cd is about how they're stalkers and rapists and how they have sex with dead bodies. I really don't think that kind of stuff deserves to be paid for. cause I would just be putting money into their pockets for being disgusting freaks.
Daddy Long Legs was better in the Bloodhound Gang. Check them out...
WOLFPAC IS FRESH!.......2000-03-24
Wolfpac's cd Somethin Wicked This Way Comes is so cool. The lyrics are so evil. These guys are down with Slipknot, Kottonmouth Kings, ICP and so many other bands and I can see why cause they are da bomb baby!
Phatness.......2000-01-27
Fans of old school Bloodhound Gang and ICP are sure to love this CD. Fans of music are sure to love this CD. Daddy Long Legs, famous for making wicked beats that change 75 times per song to keep it fresh brings it back again on this album. Press play on the CD and walk away because there's no need to skip any tracks...
Something Wicked This Way Comes.......1999-12-06
Wolfpac has put out the best cd of 1999. Forget all about ICP, Korn, Kid Flop, Eminem, etc. These are the dopest white boys in the music industry. Great mix of rap and guitars. Wolfpac 4 Life.

Album Description
Never before released titles involving members of KISS and Wicked Lester. Musician, Gordon G. G. Gebert (Author of the hit books KISS & Tell and KISS & Tell MORE! available through Amazon.com) leads this project with drummer/singer/producer Michael Sciotto.
A new version of the KISS title "She" with Ron Leejack (former Wicked Lester guitarist) playing rhythm guitar and belting out the lead vocal makes the Still Wicked CD a must listen.
Song writer Kerry Scott penned tune "Bodies Talking" features MaryAnn Scandiffio (Black Lace) handling lead vocals with a special appearance by hot-shot studio guitarist Nick Moroch on lead guitar. Nick provided his much sought after lead guitar talent on "She" also.
Instrumental "Cajun Rain" written by Ron Leejack creates an instant imagery. Harmonica and slide guitars complete this Bayou country feel.
Gebert's version of a lost Bloodrock classic called "D.O.A." is a superb re-make as the eeriness of this rock title will send shivers up your spine.

WOW! .... I'm glad I found this........2005-01-18
I just read Gordon Gebert's book, Rock & Roll War Stories, and I read a funny chapter all about this CD. Ex-Kiss / Wicked Lester guitarist, Ron Leejack, is on this CD.
I did some research and found it here on Amazon.com. Well worth getting just for the obscure track Ace Frehley plays on. Knowing the history of the recordings made me enjoy the CD even more. Two thumbs up.
Great CD - well recommended.......1999-04-12
What can I say? Great CD - well recorded, great musicians, one of my fav in the carousel.
Trying to stand on the backs of others.......1999-04-07
i was aware of Gordon Gerber's problems with Ace Frehley before i got this album, but i tried to keep an open mind listening to it. Upon listening to "She", i couldn't help but think this was Gordon trying to get revenge on Ace by destroying one of his signature songs. Every part of the album seemed to be some way of kicking dirt on the KISS sound and legend from the choice of 'band' name (KISS started out as Wicked Lester), to choice of songs, and the decision to parody 70s and 80s hard rock with silly overblown production dressed up with girlish keyboards. The "track" with Ace is just a joke meant to have something to mention on a sticker.
Worth getting.......1999-03-24
Good quality CD - I got into every cut - no fillers
Surprisingly EXCELLENT CD!.......1999-02-05
I've read Gordon Gebert's books KISS & Tell and KISS & Tell MORE and I wanted to see what kind of musician he is. I figured he was a hack and a loser that couldn't make it big in the music biz and decided to write books. But I was wrong and very surprised. The guy is a talented writer AND a talented musician. Great assortment of musicians on this CD.
My impressions:
1: SHE - Great version of the classic KISS cut. It's punchy and well played. Crank it up!
2: BODIES TALKING - If you like 80's rock it's a rocker but with musical subliminal nuances. Not cheesey straightforward crap. Dated but good.
3: CAJUN RAIN - I just picture this song in a movie sound track. Sort of like Midnight Cowboy. Creates a feeling. It's a shame the harmonica player, Polio Peach Adams, died right after this recording. I heard it was the last recording he ever did.
4: D.O.A. - I love this song. It's eery, morbid and another song that just creates a mood. The keyboards are cool. The words are sick. The singer is not up to the musical performance. The mix is not consistent with the rest of the CD. I wonder why? But still a great cut.
5: SAM - LOL - great lyrics. I bet Gebert dedicated that song to his buddy Ace Frehley.
6: ROCKER ROOM THEME - This song is only 45 seconds long. The explanation I heard is that it was a television theme song that Gordon Gebert and Ace Frehley recorded together when they were working together. It definitely is classic Ace Frehley guitars on this recording. Just leaves you wanting to hear more. I'm glad I got the CD for this cut alone. Rare performance from Ace.
Overall this CD is definitely worth purchasing. I recommend it. I want to hear more from Gebert and crew.
