We've all heard enough Sly, PFunk, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with that...THEY ROCK. But, it's nice to know that there were so many funky people that didn't get on the Top 40. This CD compilation has a ton of very cool stuff. It's worth owning just for the Supersouls' Loaded To The Gills(though I wish I could hear the whole thing! A few of these tracks are edited, but not in a bad way). Put it on and DANCE.

A HUGE thank you to the people who rated this album. It is gold.
For non-funk-o-philes, which I am, all I can say is: imagine all of your favourite 70s shows and then amplify the theme songs by about 1000, and you'll get close to where this little beauty will take you.
I have bought a fair bit of stuff off Amazon, and this is the first CD that I really reckoned everyone else should know about.
Whoever it was that wrote that "if you want to pay a fistfull of bucks for funk" list knows what they are about. I have played this thing thrice over and it just gets better.
Do yourself a favour, buy it, whack it on your headphones and wander the city Shaft-style ... people will puzzle about your slightly odd head gyrations while you're cruising the vege aisle, but that's because they don't know better yet.
Don't ask me to describe the choons, I can't, all you need to know is that your life is lesser without them.

If this 80 minute power house of rare and raw late 60s early 70s funk doesn't do something for you, something is wrong... It is the type of stuff that some funk searching DJs wet their pants for and do nothing but dream of... that one rare obscure ultra funky find that NO ONE ELSE has. Well, now this label has reissued it... can't say how long it will remain in print, but I can tell you this, unless you happen to be an expert of expert collector on EXTREMELY rare funk, odds are this collection is going to be a gem that will remind you that no, you haven't heard it all... and maybe more juice like this is hiding in yet other vaults waiting to surface!!!

Begining in the nasty James Brown "Mother Popcorn" era, the groups also reflect the influences of other funky soul powerhouses from the era including Archie Bell and The Drells, Dyke and the Blazers - - and of course the JBs themselves and the emerging Memphis sound. "Down Home" Funky drumming, driving bass, biting bluesy syncopated rhythm guitar and yes, quite a few Hammond organs epitomize the sound. Tunes range from horn driven instrumentals to hard core soul shouting.

Surprises include a funky James Brown Apollo melody as well as super funky version of War's SLIPPING INTO DARKNESS that actually outfunks the original ! My favorite includes the Lyn Collins sounding ultra bumpin' masterpiece DON'T GO, by the Aristocrats long before they were a really dirty joke...There's also a bit of ultra funky psychadelic soul in the form of the Ebony Rhythm Band and The Soul Seven. Finally its topped off with a real cool wa wa driven/early Kool and the Gang sounding STREET SCENE and a nice slick sounding version of SCORPIO.

All in all this is some ultra rare groove juice from the vaults that you definitely don't want to let pass you by !

A treasure! A jem! The title says it all! Heavy funk rarities is an absolute must have purchase and listen to any one who: likes to party, is a musician, music historian or anyone who is just a plain old music fan. Really cool beats and melodies that you could dance, sing and hum to all day long!

The Sarah McLachlan cottage industry rolls with Rarities. This disc of hard-to-finds and extended remixes offers some choice morsels for casual fans and a whole plateful for the faithful. The Freedom Sessions proved that McLachlan can do some nice stuff with a cover tune, and she offers a sweet handful here. Fellow Canadians Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell get lushed-out respectively with "Song For A Winter's Night" and "Blue," and McLachlan also works her magic with XTC's "Dear God" and the Billie Holiday classic "Gloomy Sunday." I must admit that I don't usually like reviewing CD's and I must admit that I only listen to a few songs on this CD but if it came with only those songs, it would still be worth it.

I've been a Sarah fan for quite some time and, by accident, I discovered she did a hauntingly beautiful cover of "Gloomy Sunday." I searched high and low to find that this song was only on the CD Rarities, B-sides & Other Stuff which I promptly bought off of amazon.

Unfortunately, the first CD arrived cracked. I was heartbroken as I tore into the package wanting to listen to that beautiful song and realized I had to wait even more. The second delivery was uneventful (save for some neighbours stealing my mail) and I was soon able to grace my ears with this magnificent song.

I've already admitted I haven't listened to much of the rest of the CD though the track listing is impressive, boasting songs which are - you guess it - "Rarities, B-sides & Other stuff." You'll find familiar names in possibly unfamiliar sounds and remixes and unless you're much more dedicated a fan than I am, some of these songs will be new to you.

I encourage you to give the entire Cd a listen but if you're like me and only purchase it for one song you still will not be disappointed.

Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff is a collection of remixed songs(Fear, Shelter, As The End Draws Near, Vox, Into the Fire, Possession), and songs Sarah McLachlan covered(XTC's Dear God, Gordon Lightfoot's Song For A Winter's night, Joni Mitchel's Blue); recorded live(Drawn To The Rhythm, Gloomy Sunday); and written and contributed for several films(I Will Remember You from Brothers McMullen, Full Of Grace from Moll Flanders).

The controversial Dear God is raging and emotional. Melancholic tracks I Will Remember You, Full Of Grace, Song For A Winter's night, and Shelter are moving and captivating. Gloomy Sunday and Fear are dark. Uptempo 80s sounding Vox, bass heavy Into The Fire, and Celtic sounding Drawn To The Rhythm may leave your foot tapping for the duration of these songs. Less interesting songs are Blue, As The End Draws Near, and Possession. What will keep you listening to the aforementioned three songs however is McLachlan's beautiful vocals. Outstanding tracks are the studio and longer version of I Will Remember You, and Shelter which is performed accompanied only by electric violin, electric viola, and bass guitar.

Extended remix of Vox should have not been included in the CD since it appears on Touch. There are also songs recorded prior to the release of Rarities that should have made its way to this CD - McLachlan's cover of Cat Stevens' Sad Lisa and Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill.

Sarah is at her best here. Her beautiful and one-of-a-kind voice could never be matched by anyone else. Even without all the techno and brilliant synths, she would stand above most any other vocalist out there today! I have had this album for years, and have never grown tired of it. What a God-send Sarah is!

This CD has the most incredible rendition of A Winter's Night that I've ever heard. And you know those moments in your life when music can bring something back to you, so close, so intense-- that you can breathe it, feel it, live it all again? What a gift that is. I swear this music gives parts of my life back to me all over again and it is truly bittersweet. This is for heartache, for beauty, and for life-- and for whoever you will always love, deeply and completely, without thought, sense or reservation. Enjoy.

If you have never heard of Sarah McLachlan then it is time you were properly introduced! This is such a great cd! Forget the fact that it's an import and that you may have to pay a little extra for it! It's worth EVERY penny!! Sarah McLachlan has a voice that is both captivating and wonderfully haunting. I find this cd relaxing, but not so much that you drift off. Alot of Sarah's lyrics are very good, as well! A good number of them provoke thoughts in one area or another. As for her songs themselves....some are bitter-sweet, some have a funky beat or different melody to them, and some will make you marvel at her talent. SUCH complex, gorgeous music!! Buy Rarities, B-Sides, & Other Stuff for yourself and be amazed.


My favorite songs off of this album: I Will Remember You; The primary reason why I bought this album. This is a beautiful ballad and would be worthy of being titled a classic! Very good lyrics!, Fear; I love the funky beat to it! Plus Sarah's voice!, Possession; Read the lyrics to this one! At the same time they are both flirtatious (the chorus in particular) and full of yearning. Wow!, Shelter; The violins mix so well with this song! Just awesome!


My one and only complaint about this cd is regarding the song Dear God; It's one of the BIGGEST, most impudent, loads of blasphemy I've ever heard in my life!! HA! Has she no faith in our almighty God? It's a pity really. But she does have rights to express her thoughts. As much right as I have to express mine regarding her song. This is my opinion. You may give me a low grade for it but see if I care, for I will stand up for my religion.

After years of making fans track down out-of-print singles, obscure compilations, and odd Japanese import pressings, Sonic Youth have decided to take a little mercy on their hardcore fans. The Destroyed Room is a rarities album that truly lives up to the label, not just settling on a few radio edits and soundtrack cuts, but gathering songs from the band's recent back catalog that are genuinely hard to find: "Campfire" from the Grand Royal At Home with the Groovebox collection; "Razor Blade," a B-side to the "Bull in the Heather" single; and several cuts from the Noho Furniture Sessions, including the intriguingly titled "Three Part Sectional Love Seat" and "Queen Anne Chair." ("The Destroyed Room" by Sonic Youth)

While it pains me to give anything less than 5 stars to a recording by what is after all the Greatest American Rock Band of the Last 25 Years--nay, the Greatest Rock Band Period of the Last 25 Years--I'll respectfully knock off one star for this collection of B-sides, demos and other sonic effluvia. This collection, you see, is mainly geared to fans of the band and other related music obsessives--newbies need not apply. If you're just looking to dip a toe into the band's very deep waters, it's better to start with SY's best-of-the-early-years collection, "Screaming Fields of Sonic Love." Those wanting to try a proper album should head straight for "Sister" (which most fans agree is actually their best album) or the epochal "Daydream Nation." The material on "The Destroyed Room" dates back no further than 1994, around the time of the underappreciated "Washing Machine" album, with the majority much more recent than that. In fact, only three of the songs here even have vocals, and one of those ("Razor Blade") is just a brief out-take. If you're already a fan, however, nothing except lack of funds should stop you from diving in, as there are plenty of Kool Things to be found, especially if you share the band's love of free improv. The lengthy instrumental workout that opens the album, "Fire Engine Dream" lets the band stretch out and just explore; needless to say, it's filled with oddly tuned textures and feedback, but also something of a groove courtesy of drummer Steve Shelley, who never receives enough credit. Naturally, SY's guitarists, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo (the real Glimmer Twins, if you ask me) are usually front and center, trading melodic ideas, drones and all-out Sonic abandon with glee. The Kim Gordon penned "Blink" is a surprisingly subtle song that would've fit right into one of the bands proper albums, and "Campfire" is an interesting excursion into abstract electronica. Unlike many latter-day noise merchants such as Wolf Eyes and Sightings, the Youth take a more laid-back, even friendly approach to horrible noise. The days of Sonic Death have been replaced by Sonic Life (an early title for the album now known as "Rather Ripped"), which is, of all things, sunny and positive. This isn't to say that it's "easy listening" (much of the stuff here will cause most "normal" folks to run for the exits). It's just that SY aim to transport listeners rather than smother them. While that approach draws sneering comparisons to so-called "jam bands," they're far more daring than the likes of Phish. If "The Destroyed Room" were released as an "all-new" album, it would definitely be considered the ballsiest release by a major rock band in years.

The biggest treat here, at least for yours truly, is the complete, uncut version of "Washing Machine's" epic coda, "The Diamond Sea." Mind you, the original version clocked in at a huge 19+ minutes--now we get to hear it at a mind-blowing 25:48! That it never feels bloated or wasteful is testament to the band's powere. Of course it's self indulgent, as is much of this album in general, but from them, too much is never enough.

4 out of 5 stars Forget Rarities, SY Releases 'Oddysseys'.......2006-12-17

The anticipation of new Sonic Youth discs are always welcomed events amongst fans in the know and 2006 has been an absolute deluge of the old, the new, and in this case, the odd. SY's latest offering is 76 minutes of ear-opening rare compilation tracks and album outtakes spanning from 1994-2004 (no earlier, no later).

It's reasonable to state that SY's website description to "Destroyed Room" was a bit misleading. Often times a b-sides/rarities comp is an uncohesive stew of songs 'not good enough' or 'too different' from a particular group's current art mindset. While The Youth has already tagged 2nd disc outtakes unto "Goo" and "Dirty", this release looked to be a culmination of the throwaways from SY's most recent seven albums.

Thankfully in a twist of rote expectations, "Detroyed Room" is different from hodge-podged outtake anthologies and plays very similar to the stylings of the inward-looking SYR series. Only three of the eleven songs on "Destroyed Room" contain lyrics (2 by Kim, 1 by Thurston) and the other eight are somewhat challenging instrumental compositions that stemmed from album session jams or focused peices specifically meant for concept compilation albums. The mind-bending instrumentals, most notably from the "Sonic Nurse" era, are angluar and rare-tuned oddysseys that demonstrate how this band glides into recording a new record.

In addition to quality music, the "Destroyed Room" booklet is not closet material for you portable cd-casers and/or I-Poders. With a track-by-track analysis, the mystery behind the sounds is explained well enough to leave the listener to do just that, LISTEN, and not question the band's intentions. Having read the band commentary, it'S obvious what The Youth has opted out to offer on this release; straight up experimental jamming.

FYI - Depending on what kind of SY fan you are this could be a warning or a letdown; this disc DOES NOT contain any noise freakouts. But on the otherhand, this disc does not offer great insight to polished outtake songs that are complete with verse/chorus/verse structures. Overall, this disc is good middle-of-the-road material. Spend the money and vote for peace (see the booklet for that reference).

I thank Sonic Youth for all the great music they've bestowed on us in 2006 alone...'Rather Ripped', their strongest LP since 'Washing Machine'. The "Helen Lundeberg/Eyeliner" 7-inch. The reissue of their first EP. And now, this...an into-the-groovey double-LP-length ride on the expressway to yr skull.

The subtitle tells you exactly what's here...b-sides and rarities. The emphasis, however, is on instrumental rarities that are ultra-tuff to come by. For me, mood pieces like "Campfire" and "Loop Cat" are definite highlights here. SY took the adventurous route with 'Destroyed Room'...they could've opted for some "safer" choices like "My Arena", "Superstar" or the cover of Nirvana's "Moist Vagina" from the "Sunday" 7-inch. But no. This record will challenge you straight outta the box with the 10-plus minute "Fire Engine Dream", which manages to sound exactly like what the title suggests. Oh, and the track-by-track notes are entertaining, too.

But let me say this. When I found out that 'Destroyed Room' was going to contain the full 26-minute version of "The Diamond Sea" complete with alternate ending, I just about "done a double backflip", to quote Roger Miller. I listened to this track today while fighting my way through Tulsa Christmas shopping traffic, and it prevented me from losing my patience and killing fellow motorists. God, what a song.

You may be saying, "Well, if it's so damn good, why only 4 stars and not 5?" I like to keep the 5-star rating meaningful, so I don't give it to every record that blows my skirt up. 5 Stars means 'Blonde on Blonde'. 'Velvet Underground & Nico'. 'Fun House'. You get the idea. Surely you will understand.

After listening to this album (over and over), I can't believe that How We Operate was the first time I'd ever heard them on the radio. I hope they go back to producing their own work- Gil Norton is brilliant, but so is Gomez. Now that they have broken through, I'd love to hear more of their layered work. It's wonderful how good this sounds with earphones on and no distractions.

I've been a Gomez fan since 2002. I heard "Shot Shot" on Radio Paradise, and I was instantly hooked. I loved the sax, the drums, the vocals, the funky stops and starts, the electronic feel, everything. I vowed to buy In Our Gun. Then, same radio station, different day, I heard "Rex Kramer", with its cool harmonica and guttural growl of a voice, and was convinced I'd discovered another amazingly cool band. Turns out that not only was that also Gomez, but it was on the same CD as "Shot Shot"! I went right out and bought In Our Gun that day. I was an instant fan, and have been ever since. True story. Another true story is what happened the day I gave Five Men in a Hut a listen. I was facing the laborious and boring task of putting away a couple cord of wood. It was going to take me a few hours, filling a cart, lugging it up a hill, stacking it in a shed. Luckily, I checked my mailbox and realized I had just received my copy of Five Men in a Hut via Amazon. I dug out my CD player (yes, no iPod, not yet) and actually ran to the store for some batteries. I popped in Five Men in a Hut to while away the hours. Oh. My. God. I was absolutely blown away. I love this band even more now, if that's possible. I think this album is so brilliant to me because I've only been a fan of their recent work, and their earlier canon has eluded me almost entirely. Not including their live album, I had heard only six of the studio tracks on this compilation. I had a lot of catching up to do. And what a treat that was! The best thing about the band is how many different styles they touch, while still sounding like Gomez. They skew rock, blues, electronica, psychedelia, and whatever strikes their fancy into their own brand of utterly cool music. What kind of music do you like? You'll like Gomez. Plain and simple. A few things struck me while listening, and dancing, and singing at the top of my voice as I put wood away. First, this does not even cover their whole catalog. Not to say it doesn't do them justice, because I think it does. It's a wonderful mix of their material, which sounds great together. Even their latest stuff, which I also love, and shows a similar songwriting formula at work, while reaching a maturity and consistency not realized on their early work, would sound great with all their older stuff. I can't wait for the career-spanner. Secondly, I love Ian and Tom's songs, but I thought I liked Ben's voice the best. Now I'm not sure. I love them all. In fact, some of Tom's song's are my favorites, and I never realized it. This band is truly amazing. They made my day of wood-stacking go by fast, and at the same time, garnered a fan for life. As the second disc ended, one of the newer tracks brought things to a close, "Diskoloadout". It brought back the same kind of funky horns and cool beat that made me love "Shot Shot" so much. I got the same adrenaline rush I did the first time I heard the band, and realized I had fallen for them all over again. Cheers, gentlemen. Can't wait to see what's next!

. . .and while you're at it get all of Gomez' stuff. Jesus they are one truly amazing band--three kickass vocalists, Ben Ottewell, Tom Gray and Ian Ball, who all play wonderfully quirky guitar to great effect, and then there's exceptional bass by Paul Blackburn and drums by Ollie Peacock. Their lyrics and arrangements are almost surreal, evoking a transplendent quality that points up their Beatles/Stones/Kinks/Who influences, while at the same time somehow establishing their sound as totally original. That they are not megastars is not only a true shame but it is also a sad commentary on what I think is the abysmal state of radio and the music industry in general.

Have the Indigo Girls hit the doldrums? Their concerts of late often prove to not only be lackluster, but dated, as singer/songwriter/guitarists Amy Ray and Emily Saliers veer dangerously close to seeming more like relics than icons. Part of that stems from their reliance on familiar material, as if their writing has slowed to a trickle. Now comes more suggestion of that in Rarities, an album made up of leftovers, odds and ends, demos, other previously unreleased material, and contributions to side albums. The good news is that there is much here to enjoy, all of it wrapped in the Girls' trademark corduroy-and-silk harmonies. Their demo version of "Ghost" is fraught with fevered longing, a remix of "Shed Your Skin" delights with its swirling, hypnotic soundscape, and the cameos by Michael Stipe ("I'll Give You My Skin") and Ani DiFranco ("Ramblin' Round") resonate with artistry and star power. But the 18-song album bloats with less-than-sparkling cuts (for example, a cacophonous rendering of Vic Chesnutt's "Free of Hope," two early and undistinguished songs from both Emily and Amy, and a techno-meets-country remix of "Free in You"). In the end, this is more a collector's disc than a window on the duo's "rarest" moments. --Alanna Nash

Listened to it once - then put it back in it's case to subsequently collect dust. Most of these songs I've already acquired through other means, and the new remix was just bad. Looking forward to the new album release in September for a little redemption.

I adore the Indigo Girls and have everything they've put out, so this was a must-buy for me. However, it's the least likely CD I'd play out of theirs. They're still in good form on this one, but it lacks the consistency of a regular Indigo Girls album.

I consider myself a die-hard (seasoned) fan, and I was greatly disappointed in this collection. More than two-thirds of the songs are previously released, so I was glad I could only purchase the 6 songs I needed. Most of the 6 actual "new" tracks are available in a poorer quality elsewhere. I am not criticizing the Indigo Girls for this redundant release, they asked their fans to vote on the songs we most wanted on this collection. This collection will seem weak and unrepresentative to the novice listener; as the duo has said many times "Rarities" demonstrates their growth as songwriters and performers.

The overall message is: this collection is for the middle, those of you that fall somewhere between a novice and die-hard fan. If your rarities collection already includes most of the songs on "Rarities," then buy the few songs you need individually. If you only own 1 or 2 Indigo Girl CDs (or tapes), then skip this one for now and go with something else like "Retrospective," "All That We Let In," or "Come On Now Social." You will be much happier in the long run, as those CDs are more representative of the duo's songwritting and abilities. However, if you own most of their CDs and you are interested in understanding their development and influences (that you don't already know), then I highly recommend this collection.

My favorite new song in this new Indigo Girls collection is "Let Me Go Easy," a wonderfully engaging and meaningful song
that I keep going back to again and again. I have been an avid
listener to their music for ten years now, and I own all of their studio albums, as well as several other collections.
Even with this background, this song has risen to near the top
of my favorites list. Not to be missed!

I've heard a bootleg version of "Finlandia," but that version is
not nearly as beautifully realized as the rendition included in this collection. Another wonderful track!

"Uncle John's Band," which, although available perhaps from other sources, was not a part of my collection before getting this, is another really enjoyable song. I especially like
the pacing of the vocal on the line, "I live in a silver mine /
And collect berrys too."

I haven't had the chance to thoroughly digest the CD yet, but
other tracks that stand out to me so far "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters," "I Don't Wanna Talk About it" and "Clampdown" (chillingly relevant with Bush and his ilk having so much power).

There are at least three songs I would have loved to have seen included here, though: "Blood Quantum," "Letter to Eve" and
"Wisteria." Had they been included, my rating probably would have been five stars.

If you are a longtime Indigo listener, don't miss this one.
You will really want to "Let Me Go Easy" and the wonderfully
rendered "Finlandia" especially.

After reading several reviews I realize many people don't UNDERSTAND the true artistry of emily Sailers and Amy Ray...The Indigo Girls. The fact that they are now releasing demos and songs of duets with other fine artists ( IE ani Difranco, Michael Stipe) is a wonderful thing. In fact they should it more. I would like to see the IG release a whole CD of nothing but old folk songs done with other artists ( Ie the water is wide, kid fears etc). Their harmonies and vocal range have always be their forte. If you truly want to enjoy and understand the indigo girls listen to them repeatedly, listen to how the melodies are constructed, listen to the words, the meaning behind what they sing about, the passion...absorbe the music into your soul, and after you have found a new appreciation then re-write your reviews.

All I have to say is that this album rocks. The music selection is great. Their cov er of No Ordinary Love by Sade is one of my favorite covers ever done. Simple Man could of been done a little bit better but i'm sure Lynard Skynard would of been proud. They rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i put off buying this partly from some of the press it was getting but it's not bad at all. the dvd's ok, nothing to get excited about unless you're pretty hardcore but the cd's better then it's getting credit for. a nice surprize. i for one think the covers are great listens. it's a much better "B-Sides & Rarities type" package then the other's i've heard. i'd reccomend it.

First off, the DVD is great, and that's probably the reason most people buy this set. It's nice to have all the videos in one place. As for the CD, it's a mish-mash and suffers as a result, but that's to be expected. Most of the songs on here are just curiosities, especially the four reworked/acoustic versions of older songs. You probably won't revisit them too often, with the possible exception of the acoustic "Be Quiet and Drive" which is very compelling. Then there are EIGHT covers, which vary in quality. The Deftones' interpretations of "Savory" and "The Chauffeur" are fantastic, and "Simple Man" and "No Ordinary Love" are also unique and good. "Wax and Wane" is not a very good song in its own right, so I don't care for the cover. Unfortunately, "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" and "Please Please Please..." just aren't great covers. Finally, there are two Deftones originals, "Crenshaw Punch" and "Black Moon." The first is a great addition to their catalogue, while the latter is purely a rap song which I don't like. In terms of pacing, the disc is great until the four-song set of "Black Moon"-"If Only Tonight We Could Sleep"-"Please Please Please..."-"Digital Bath (acoustic)," which almost kills it, though it's revived by "The Chauffeur." All in all, you're sure to enjoy several of these tracks (at least "Savory" and "The Chauffeur") as a Deftones fan, but you're also likely to find at least a couple of songs to be lacking.

"Join the Dots" is a long overdue compilation from the post punk/goth pioneers. This isn't really a surprising set, clearly being what it claims to be, a compilation of b sides and rarities. Pretty much everything is here. Only completists will previously have everything on here, which have been available on various singles, soundtracks, or collected on various bootleg compilations.

What is remarkable about this set is the quality of the output presented here. Robert Smith's remarks in the opening of the liner notes strike a chord when he says he always hoped to hear another version of the band he was listening to at the time on the b side. If your curious how a true a statement this is, listen to several tracks on the first disc, notably the Exploding Boy or A Few Hours After This to hear the Cure in full experimental mode, fooling around with a grandiose sound listeners would become more familiar with on later recordings.

There are many moments on here that find the Cure outshining the respective albums that these bsides support. To the Sky is one of the most remarkable songs they've recorded while the Wild Mood Swings era bsides are better than anything off of that album.

This is overall a great set. Aside from a few throaway remixes, it's solid. The Cure are one of the few bands (along with the Pet Shop Boys and until recently Depeche Mode) who have put as much care into the b-sides as they would on the a-sides, really giving something extra to their fans. Fantastic set.

It has been a long-held belief by many, if not most, Cure fans that Robert Smith often chooses to hide away the most beautiful of his works, striking them from the track lists of the "official" Cure albums, and placing them instead elsewhere (usually, in difficult-to-find places.)

"Join the Dots: B-sides and Rarities" fuels that belief even further, as nearly any listener could tell from the very first playing of the compilation. Essentially, this 4-disc set is Robert's way of finally unlocking the stored-away gem-chest of beloved yet elusive material, which many fans had for years been hoping would be opened.

The strongest sections of this compilation are definitely the second and third discs. Why so many of these songs were never A-sides is a mystery known only to Robert and to God.

Among the very greatest works on "Join the Dots" - which happen to also be among the very greatest Cure songs ever made - are:

Also notable are Burn, More Than This (which is not, as some erroneously think, a Roxy Music cover), the Exploding Boy, Coming Up, and Out of Mind, among a few others.

The Dizzy Mix of Just Like Heaven also proved to be quite nice, however it would have been preferrable to include the much more scarce (and better) Extended Dizzy Mix of the song, in my opinion.

All in all, this compilation is one of the very best bets for Cure fans, along with Disintegration and Wish. It could also combine well with Greatest Hits.

From the saturnine appearance of Robert Smith it looks like he's spent the better part of his career wallowing in self pity with very little time to put out a prodigious library of music. Maybe he is depressed but he isn't lazy. His work ethic is clearly shown in this dazzling collection.

Made up of b-sides covering over 20 years Follow the Dots never disappoints. The material is strongest at the beginning but song quality never falls off precipitously. It's amazing that this is all B-side material!

An exhaustive overview of pretty much all b-sides and rarities by the Cure during their tenure on Fiction Records (1978-2001), "Join the Dots" is a critical collection for fans. Around five hours of rare Cure music is contained within the four CDs of the set, and while some of the material left out can be annoying (more on that in a minute), this is a superb resource for any of us who try and gather the entire output of a band.

The set runs chronologically, providing a fine overview of the band's career as much as anything else. The Cure always seemed to fill their b-sides with interesting material, from the early days (jaunty, clean tone punky "Plastic Passion") to much later (the absolutely superb "Sugar Girl"). Like many bands, in teh '90s the Cure became involved with tribute albums ("Purple Haze") and soundtracks ("Burn", "Dredd Song"). Some great performances ended up on these, "Burn" in particular from the Crow is highly regarded, and while there are bound to be some things you won't care for (for me it's the occasional 12" remix and some of the b-sides that just sound incomplete and unmemorable like "Halo"), it'll be someone else's goldmine.

The only really noticably missing stuff on here are the a-sides-- "Killing An Arab", "Charlotte Sometimes", et.al. While these have all been released in one fashion or another, it'd be nice to see all of them collected in a convenient (and remastered!) package as some of them never ended up on albums.

Per usual good boxed set standards, the entire set has been rematered-- it sounds great, crisp and clear with an opportunity to really appreciate the subtleties of the pieces, and includes extensive liner notes about each disc and a detailed discography.

I can't imagine anyone but a real diehard of the band would want this, but for those of us who fall in that category, "Join the Dots" is a great set. Recommended.

I really really love this album. With that said, you must be wondering why I'm giving it 3 stars. Well ... the entire first disc of b-sides is amazing, while the other 3 quickly dive from "ho-hum" to the point where you're scrapping the barrel for good tracks.

... AND this would have gotten 5 stars if it were the first (essential) disc for only $10. After breaking the first disc, I pondered whether or not to buy the whole thing new. And then I found it on Napster for $10; think of it as a "great b-side album from 3IB - Head Cure + 3 bonus discs."

This is Nick Cave's very own favourite album by the Bad Seeds, and this also happens to be my favourite album of all time. I purchased these three discs for about 16 dollars, making it my first Nick Cave CD of purchase. I listened to it all, and it was just perfect.

I've bought a lot more Nick Cave albums since then, in which he has turned out to be my number one favourite artist, but i always look back on this one as my ultimate favourite.

The 3-disc compliation of b-sides and rarities are all good enough to be sprawled across his other albums, but at the same time im happy that this compliation was made. There is too many songs to highlight, but stand-outs included the bluesy jam of God's Hotel with great lyrics, the acoustic versions of Deanna, City Of Refuge, The Mercy Seat and Jack The Ripper, a great upbeat tune called Come Into My Sleep, a magnificent cover of Rainy Night In Soho, Sail Away, and so so SO many more.

This album showed me how good music can get. I highly recommend you should buy it, right now.

They may be called B Sides and Rarities but there is nothing sub par about these songs. And even plucked out of different eras and line-ups, they actually form a sort of cohesive, deranged, drunken blues and poetry whole.
There are album offshoots, some unashamedly beautiful like Train Song, acoustic versions and jazzed up remixes of classics, like Red Right Hand, Deanna and Scum, there are cover songs and crazy jam session on a theme, both of which apply to Leonard Cohen's Tower of Song, plus live gems like God's Hotel - just listen to what the band does in the background!
For old faithful, this is a treasure box, even if you thought you had it all. I had almost all of these on CD singles and such, but one was rendered inaccessible by technological progress- the track from the X Files soundtrack; it was hidden before the first song and impossible to play on computer CD players. And it's nice to have the whole collection handy on three CDs.
For new fans this could actually be a great, offbeat introduction to the wonderful world of the Bad Seeds: dark humor and great songwriting, with a touch of inspired insanity, in one cool package. Just sample "The Ballad Of Robert Moore And Betty Coltrane", a three minute Quentin Tarantino movie rolled into a song, and you will be exploring Cave in no time.

Meestal zijn B-sides en rarities een collectie bijeengeraapte rommel die niet verkocht raakt van een artiest die 'fin-de-carriere' is... maar dit is zeker een uitzondering. Alleen al voor de compleet geflipte versie van O' Malley's bar is het zijn geld meer dan waard. The ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltrane had eigenlijk ook op Murder Ballads moeten staan...
The Tower of song is beter dan de originele versie. Gewoon supergeslaagd!!

What I love the most about this 3 disk set is volume III.
That disc alone is what made buying this worth it. To start it
off, you have "My little empty boat". I fell in love with this
song the first time I heard it. I wonder why he never put that
on of his regular albums. It may be one of his best. The rest of the disc reflects a part of his life that is more personal.
It's calm. I haven't liked his last albums that much, but when
I heard this, I was like what the f---. Why was he waiting so
long to put this stuff out. Volume III is mature. And I don't
mean there is sex and violence in it. It's sophisticated.

For bright eyes fans & non- bright eyes fans, conor never fails to impress.
The way he twists his words into stories or lyrical form, his imperfect voice gives him edge.
I would highly reccomend this album.
But I'm a biased reveiw, bright eyes has been my favorite band for years.
Conor Oberst never fails me.

This album had many songs that I've heard once or twice on the occassional odd EP I would discover on the internet and then lose. It has a great range of songwriting, and the liner notes include comments on the songs creation.

I really was blown away by how good this album turned out to be. I'm serious when I say I was kind've turned off by the number of so-so reviews, but was I surprised by how well this album came together. Many of the songs are really well made, and the song-writing remains top-notch. Granted, this album won't convert any new listeners, but rarities albums never are ment for that. They give out new tracks when the artist is doing something else. And since all these songs are out-of-print, you really can't buy them anywhere else.
The actual quality is amazing. I really don't like recomending certain songs, because other people just download a couple of songs instead of getting the whole album, which is the point, isn't it? But I must point out some of the simply amazing 16 tracks- Drunk Kid Catholic is brilliant, Spent on Rainy Days has a feverish energy, The Vanishing Act is well made, and as a whole this album is worth buying for Bright Eyes fans. It should NOT be a first pick for someone who hasn't heard Connor Oberst before, but that's not why this album was released. A nice album for fans, though. And a standard for all rarities albums.

This "new" release from Bright Eyes is actually pretty good. There were a couple tracks on the album that I had already heard sometime before, but some of the ones I hadn't heard before were terrific. Conor even has some guest appearences from such artists as M Ward, and Jimmy LaValle from the band otherwise known as The Album Leaf. Most of the songs are great, but i found a couple others to be kind of bland and boring. It's nice to hear some of the Bright Eyes songs I had never heard before. And it is true that the album somehow seems to all fit quiet nicely together although it is not an actual studio release. One of my favorite songs would have to be "I Will Be Grateful for This Day," and sounds kind of like a pre Digital Ash song although it really isn't. A song that does sound like it could have been directly off of Digital Ash was "Blue Angels Air Show." I found it amusing to see though the stage Conor was in when listening to each song. You can almost picture which album each song would've been on if they had been put onto one of hhis studio albums. The song "Bad Blood" really amazes me because it sounds like a song Bright Eyes would've made, but then I later find out that Jimmy from The Album Leaf is the one who made al the music for that song. That song has recently become one of my favorites off the album but it is kind of a dissapointment to find out that none of the music was recorded by Bright Eyes. If you're a big fan of Bright Eyes then you'd more than likely already heard a few of these songs, but just because you've already heard some of them shouldn't be your reason for not bying it because this album is defanitely worth a listen. You'll be quiet surprised by it actually and see how many songs Conor has been keeping hidden from us. Well, actually now hidden because most are on singles, or other random compilations. But atleast you won't have to go off searching for each of these songs individually since they're all on this disk. Ok, whatever... Just check it out if you're a Bright Eyes fan...

In my experience compilations and "best of" CDs rarely function as a cohesive whole. That is why I was surprised that the songs on this album flowed together so well, especially since each song was recorded at a different time and for varying purposes.
My only complaint, as a die-hard Bright Eyes fan who also lacks a turntable, would be that the CD version is missing several tracks that are on the LP which can be purchased on the Saddle-Creek site.

Though countless Rolling Stones zealots contend that the band's most compelling work bubbled to the top prior to 1973, the music department at Starbucks has unearthed a sundry collection of B-sides, live takes and unreleased studio recordings culled mostly from the three decades that followed. I won't belabor the point. Others have written more eloquently about the short comings of this release.

The only songs that comes close to rarities are "Let it Rock" and "thru the lonely nights". "Let it Rock" was released as a b-side only in Europe in 1971. "thru the lonely nights" released only as a b-side in 1974.

The rest have been released through multiple compilations. In fact this is the third release of "Mannish Boy". How the hell is that rare?

There's a wealth of songs that await release. Does anyone would get upset if "Claudine" was released today? Does anyone under a certain age even know what the song is about? It's actually a humorous song once you get past the subject matter.

How about Keith's rendition of "Run Run Rudolph"? How about the mid/late 60's song "can't believe(aka I can see it")? How about live recordings from their concerts in 1972/73? How about the full concert recording for "get your ya-ya's out" with the songs in the CORRECT order?

The Beatles recording company has released several CDs with unreleased songs.

Bruce Springsteen, who is notorious on keeping a tight rein on his songs, has released a boxed set of previously unreleased songs.

Surely the Stones, with a pelthora of unreleased songs, can release a real boxed set of unreleased songs. This single CD ( where 95% of the songs on this CD are about as rare as the sun coming up every day) is an insults to fans' intelligence.

And artists/record companies wonder why bootlegs are so prevalent.

Early in 2005, there were a few Stones releases on the schedule that never saw the light of day. Stones freaks like myself salivated over the prospect of hearing these multi-disc collections, which promised outtakes and unreleased recordings from the late 1960s, and tours of the early 1970s. Instead we got this knock-off Christmas release that amounted to nothing more than theft, based on false advertising. I bought 'Rarities' as soon as it came out (for full price). I had already bought 'Sucking In The Seventies'. Within a week, I realized I had quite a few of these so-called 'Rarities' and I felt like a total sucker. Thanks to Christopher Bushman for pinpointing the appalling failures in the liner notes (more reason to feel ripped off) and to J.P. Ryan for his alternative list of REAL rarities ('Cook Cook Blues' from the Steel Wheels era was also worth I throw, I thought). As for airbrushing out Bill Wyman-- this reminds of the recent double-disc compilation which featured a thick booklet but no space for Mick Taylor. I love the Stones but I hate how they rip off their fans.

Well it seems that neither ABKCO or VIRGIN know the history of the band. HEY, HEY, HEY, THATS WHAT I SAY!!! Will someone PLEASE HIRE A PERSON WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS THE RECORDING HISTORY OF THE BAND!!! Some of the cuts on this CD have appeared elsewhere. Nonetheless, those items pulled together for this CD do a nice job of providing a different sound to many of the Stones' hits.

Some of the live tunes are welcome, such as "Tumbling Dice," "Wild Horses," "Beast of Burden," "I just Wanna Make Love to You," "Live with Me," "Harlem Shuffle," "Mannish Boy," and "Thru and Thru." Some of these are especially good, such as "Harlem Shuffle." It's delightful to hear a classic blues song like "Mannish Boy" done live. Live versions of songs often provide a different perspective on those songs, as compared with the CD/album versions. So, the live cuts themselves help make this a worthwhile CD.

Studio cuts here represent the range of Stones' work. The liner notes say that "there's a significant trove of unreleased material and unfinished song scraps in the vault." Some of the unreleased material, as Mick puts it, represent "really great things" whereas there are also "a lot of mediocre things."

"Fancy Man Blues" is another nice example of the Stones' affinity to blues. The dance version of "Miss You" is interesting to listen to; one of their own bluesy tunes, "Wish I'd Never Met You," is worth a listen. An old Chuck Berry song, "Let It Rock," again testifies to the Rolling Stones' roots.

All in all, quite a serviceable CD. Listening to this makes one yearn to hear those other "really great things" that Mick says are in the vault.

The counting has stopped on how many compilation albums the Rolling Stones have issued over the years, and are continuing to issue. This is the latest in that never-stopping series.

The album title "Rarities 1971-2003" (16 tracks; 79 min.) might lead an innocent buyer to think that he or she is getting genuine Stones rarities, as in "lost gems that have never seen the daylight before". On that count alone, this album is flat-out mistitled as most of the songs have been issued before. In fact one might argue that only one-fourth of the album can (barely) qualify as a rarity: the bluesy tunes "Fancy Man Blues" and "Wish I'd Never Met You" (both from 1989), and the rockers "Through the Lonely Nights" (from 1975), and the Chuck Berry cover "Let It Rock" (from 1971). And that's really it. All the other tracks have been and/or continue to be easily available. That said, this does not mean that the music is lacking on this album. On the contrary, the quality level of the songs is mostly outstanding.

It does strike me that there continues to be a significant gap in the Rolling Stones output, namely a TRUE release of rarities from their 40+ year recording career, and/or a release similar to the Beatles Anthologies albums. As to "Rarities 1971-2003", good music, but buyer beware!
