The other tracks are great songs themselves, but the main reason why I wanted this soundtrack was that Thomas Newman is one of my absolute favorite composers. So besides the last track, "The Orchard," where is the rest of the amazing original score??

The Best Album of 1996.......2006-10-25

There is no question that John Travolta has had one of the most successful movie careers of all time. Sometimes people forget that Travolta movies have been associated with three very popular soundtracks - "Saturday Night Fever", "Urban Cowboy", and "Grease" (Travolta would actually sing on that one). Many forget is that there is a fourth Travolta film that has one of the all-time great soundtracks - that film being "Phenomenon". Not only did "Phenomenon" have a great soundtrack, but it probably is both the most underrated performance and underrated film in Travolta's career. One thing that makes the "Phenomenon" soundtrack so outstanding is that it truly captures the essence of the movie. As you listen to the soundtrack, you truly feel like to are watching the movie. Not only is this a great soundtrack, I would venture to say that this was the best album for 1996.

To understand why the "Phenomenon" soundtrack is so good - one must have a little background on the movie. Travolta plays George Malley - a small town man whose life changes after he sees a flash of light. Following that encounter, George begins to experience genius and telekinetic powers. However the government becomes wary of George's newfound powers However George learns that he has a rare brain tumor that is causing his brain to act the way he is. The tumor is slowly killing George. The film deals with George dealing with his powers, the government, a relationship with Lace Pennamin (played by Kyra Sedgwick), and his own mortality. It are all of these factors that really play into the music that supports this movie.

Each of the songs have some of the great producers in the business - Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Don Was, Trevor Horn, and Robbie Robertson. However it is Robertson who serves as the executive producer to the compilation. Robertson's efforts must be applauded as he builds a soundtrack that captures the essence of the movie. The soundtrack makes great use of crooning and blues along with a "coffee house" sound - gelling beautifully with the movie.

Here is a song by song review:

"Change the World": While Eric Clapton didn't write or produce this song, nor deliver his best guitar work - it is Clapton's crooning performance of some very moving lyrics that easily made this a "Record of the Year". If you listen to the lyrics, the lines "Change the World; I will be the sunlight of your universe" support many of factors that George Malley was dealing with in this movie.

"Dance with Life (The Brilliant Life)": The title along gels very nicely with the whole story of George Malley. Bryan Ferry is one of the most underrated musicians and this is one of his most underrated songs. Ferry also employs a crooning style. Trevor Horn produced this song.

"Crazy Love": Don Was produces this Van Morrison song. This is a nice "coffee house" song delivered by another crooner - Aaron Neville. Neville does great justice to this cover. Robertson is also featured on this song.

"Corrina": I hadn't heard of Taj Mahal before, but this song really gave me a good taste. Very nice bluesy song that fits the "small town" flavor of George Malley's town perfectly.

"Have a Little Faith In Me": Don Was produces this Jewel song. I was not a Jewel fan, but this song really impressed me. Again, just from the title alone - this fits very nicely with the whole story of "Phenomenon". But the whole song also fits nice. Jewel delivers a "full blown" performance in this song. She almost employs a "gospel-like" quality combined with some nice coffee house rock. I like how Jewel "builds up" this song as it progresses.

"I Have the Touch": Peter Gabriel's career is legendary. This song just adds to Gabriel's legend - and I subscribe that this might be his best performance on any record. The title and theme of this song might be the best fit of all of the songs on this soundtrack. Gabriel's unique haunting voice and style are tailor-made for the "Phenomenon" story. Simply put - outstanding.

"Pieces of Clay": This might not be Marvin Gaye's best known song, but it is a very good song. The song employs a bluesy Hendrix-like guitar at the beginning before progressing to a more traditional bluesy song. As mentioned, the whole bluesy theme fits nicely with the setting and story of this movie - and this song is no exception.

"Para Donde Vas": Here is another group I discovered. The Iguanas deliver an outstanding performance. This song is in Spanish and has a full blown Latin feel. It's very catchy and will have you toe-tapping.

"Misty Blue": A very bluesy song. This was my least favorite track of the collection. While I personally didn't care for it, I still have to say that because of this bluesy theme, this fits very well with the whole theme of the movie.

"A Thing Going On": J.J. Cale was the third artist I discovered on this album. I'm surprised Cale didn't make a better name for himself and that this song didn't become a hit. The guitar work in this song is almost a dead-ringer for the work of Carlos Santana.

"The Orchard": This is a very nice instrumental. It has a haunting quality thanks to the African-styled percussion at the beginning. This might not have the most catchy beat, but this is still one worth listening to. It is some outstanding musicianship by Thomas Newman that makes this a great finale to this collection.

It's too bad the liner notes don't include the lyrics. However, that doesn't take away from the album. When looking at 1996 albums, this album clearly deserves its place among the best - and also deserves its place among the elite Travolta soundtracks. Whether you have seen the movie or not, this collection is definitely worth getting.

Loved it then, love it now.......2006-06-17

When I was a few years too young to watch the actual movie, I found the soundtrack to "Phenomenon" in my dad's music closet; it has remained my overall favorite CD ever since. Although some reviewers pointed out that it is missing a few things, that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the music on here. It reminds me more of a "best of..." type collection than a soundtrack. I'm glad that it doesn't have every single arrangement because, honestly, that gets a little old when listening to the entire CD in one sitting. But if you're into collecting for that purpose, I wouldn't recommend this. For people wanting some fantastic music to add to their collection (that in ten years hasn't gotten old for me), put this on your list. At track one you'll be hooked.

so darn good.......2007-04-11

Back in June of 2000 when I first heard this album, I told myself that it's the greatest hard rock album of all-time. Of course things change, but I still can find lots of stuff to like about it.

First of all, even though UFO is probably more of a party rock band that likes to rock out, that's not entirely what the band is about. The lead singer has an emotionally hoarse and pleasing voice, and it really elevates these hard rock songs to a new level. If the band had a different lead singer, these songs wouldn't have been nearly as good. He's a really gifted singer and really wants the listener to experience a feeling of love, instead of just feeling like "rocking out". He's all about emotion.

Also, the guitar playing is really good. I mean, REALLY good. Just like the lead singer, he can be emotional on his instrument. He's also extremely melodic and consistently-pleasing throughout the entire album. Sure, the guitar solos on this album are a bit longer compared to what other hard rock bands were doing at the time, but remember, everything about this band seems to be about emotion and taking their music a bit further than other rockers at the time.

My favorite songs would be "doctor doctor" "crystal light" and "queen of the deep". By the way, my version of this album begins with the song "too young to know" and I recommend you find the version with this song as the opening track because this track order is better, in my opinion.

Phenomenon.......2007-03-08

A MUST for any UFO fan ... if you're new or never heard of them :( then you need to get this. They are timeless rock recordings that I have never got tired of hearing, since the late 70's. The three best, in order are: Obsession, Lights Out, Phenomenon ... the other are good (some great) but they (UFO) would never top these three.

Melts the Speakers.......2007-02-15

Unless you are a collector and must have all UFO's albums like me forget about anything prior to this album. This is when things really kicked off musically with the addition of Michael Schenker on guitars. This and the five albums that followed were the golden era and the best stuff they produced period. I remember playing my vinyl copy of this to destruction at sixth form college and converting a few students on the way. "Doctor Doctor" and "Rockbottom" are legendary rockers along with quite an assortment of tunes with a more acoustic feel on this one. "Queen of the Deep" pounds along with a Sabbath-like hook line then the Schenker solo rips in and melts the speakers. Blues cover "Built for Comfort" is superb and after hearing countless other versions nothing can compare to Phil Mogg's vocal and the teenage Schenker's lead guitar. If you're new to UFO I would get the live album "Strangers in the Night" first as a taster. After that any of "Obsession", "Lights Out", "No Heavy Pettin", "Force It" or this one which are all quality and still provide most of their current live set.

Seventeen a nature's queen...........2007-01-28

UFO proper began with 'Phenomenon' released in May of 1974 as it introduced one of hard rock's finest guitar players in Michael Schenker. After debuting at the dawn of the 70's with two awful "space-rock" albums (1970 and 1971 respectively) the band regrouped as a recording unit and were giving an injection of talent by the arrival of a young (18 or so) German kid who barely knew English. Metal being an international language, the transition was musically smooth if not personally but the combination proved magic and saved UFO from obscurity. 'Phenomenon' was in many ways a real first album being that is not one of their acknowledged classics yet it laid the groundwork for what was to follow. Immediately blowing the doors off of the awful Mick Bolton era was the metal classic "Rock Bottom", still one of the band's and Michael's masterpieces; a real early speed metal anthem with an amazing lead break section and reintroduction of the verse. "Doctor, Doctor" has also taken its place next to "RB" in the catalogue of UFO greats but it is not as good in my opinion although it works better as a single. The rest of the record is a hodgepodge of early Schenker and some of the remnants of the band's misguided first incarnation. "Too Young to Know" has always been one of my favorite UFO tracks and stands alongside "Rock Bottom" for me, the awesome melody that Michael plays throughout really overpowers the first great piece of songwriting by Mogg and Way. "Oh My" is another solid effort but not any thing the band wouldn't blow away on subsequent albums. Perhaps to not alienate fans of their first two records (as if these losers really existed) the band still carries the space rock albatross on "Space Child", only made listenable because of Schenker (if Bolton played on it, oh man what a turd this would have been!). Nothing else is really all that memorable and the band was still one record away from their first true classic, 'Force It'. 'Phenomenon' is definitely a taster for the magic that was to come.

PHENOMENON (UFO).......2006-11-23

This is the one album that really caught my attention when it first came out and discovered Michael Schenker who would eventually become my number 1 guitarist of all,there's really not enough space to tell the Schenker story this guy has influenced a lot of guitarists,I think he hasn't received the credit he deserves and probably never will,this is my sugestion in regards to (UFO/MSG)If you wanna have the best collection of a great guitar player I recomend UFO from( Phenomenon to Strangers in the night)and( The michael Schenker Group first to Tales of Rock & Roll)There's at least 30 MSG CD'S and also about 4 of UFO reunion with Schenker back, other then those recordings,my personal opinion I didn't care much for the other guitarists that came and went replacing Schenker except Vinnie Moore with UFO live only,If you never heard Michael Schenker before you will become a fan too once you hear his music!

I have been a tupac fan since i was 15 and i will tell you this is a great jumpoff for a novice listener, and a great retrospective for a fan. You can say tupac was the best rapper ever give that title to a mortal like big or jay-z. Tupac was a poet of our times, even the hardest thug has to feel a not in his throught when hearing him flow on the the baby don't cry remix about a girl being atacked. This mixtape does justice to his quotes and should have been the soundtract to the movie instead of the cliche'ed one that was released. After seeing the movie and hearing this tape, if you are open minded, you will see why so many think he was assasinated and not just shot in a drive by. This man could very well have settled down and became a central figure in American politics. If ron regan can be president then Pac could have been a national figure easily. This album is a great place to start.

good idea. .......2006-04-06

i, too looked for this after reading what chris rock said about it in rolling stone. a few songs are okay, a few songs are really weak (as weak as a pac tune can get), and a few are just filler.

however, a few stand out. such as "hold up," an entire song based upon nate dogg's line in dre's "the next episode." it has this really tight beat that sounds kinda like old old snoop dogg. before he dropped the doggy. if you're blazin' phillies, its good stuff to cruise to. additionally, "fight music" is a strong track, with pac flowing over "hate me now" by puffy and nas. it's really good because the beat is prolific, powerful, and quite emotional. the particular pac lines they choose are equally as powerful, giving one the feeling as though this is the original. "me against the world" is pac over dre's "still d.r.e." beat, which is pretty cool (except for the female chorus vocals). i mean, that's a killer beat no matter who rhymes over it. i like dre's much better, but this was a good mix. "thug in me" sounds kinda like something pac would've done when he was alive. it's a decent filler track, i suppose.

the best thing this cd has to offer is tupac's personal opinion that starts the track "revolution."

he says "this country was built on gangs. you know. i think this country still is run on gangs. republicans. democrats. the police department. the fbi. the c.i.--those are gangs. you know what i mean? the correctional officers. i had a correctional officer tell me straight up 'we're the biggest gang in new york state.' straight up."

hearing these words really made me remember how great tupac was. he had a lot of strong messages that unfortunately too little of his audience could actually hear. if you're a tupac fan and have most of his cds, then yeah. add this one to your collection because you'll probably dig it. if you're not a diehard pac fan, then maybe just consider it for fact that its pac with hot new beats. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. but definitely get this before you shell out $XX for Death Row's "nu-mixx klassics." this one is better.

Delivers what it promises........2006-03-31

I decided to pick this up after hearing that Chris Rock had put it in his top 25 Rap CD's of all time...
This mixtape does make you relise something though. All of Pac's beats on his old songs seem tailered for him, cause with his style of rapping, you cant just put any beat in, even the hottest beats may sound wack with him...
I own every pac album from when he was alive, and his greatest hits, and there was still some verses in here I hadnt hered, so it is a good buy... All the tracks flow together, so it sounds like a real mixtape. The best song is the second one, Revolution Feturing Busta Rhymes, over that one really hot P. Diddy beat ( Forgot the name ) And what is cool is that verse is from Military Minds, and even though I found the original song wack, they make it really really good, even better than some of his greatest hits... The Dj's did a good job... Bottom line, if you are a Pac fan get this! I will soon be getting the B.I.G. one too...

Wow! thats all I can say about this cd is just wow. This is an awesome rock cd. I really liked every single song. Even "This is a Call," the one slow song on the album, was really good. I think Rawkfist is probably my favorite, all though I like them all alot. If you want great music to rock out to, and to be able to understand the words, buy "Phenomenon" by Thousand

I was so busy listening to this CD, and loving it, I didn't even know they came out with a new one! (The Art of Breaking) But I'm not missing out on The Flame In All of Us(the one thats coming out this summer).

The songs on here all all great. But here's my review:

Phenomenon - 9/10 - Took a while for it to grow on me, but now I like it a lot. It's got a very...different sound.

Step to Me - 9/10 - Good drumming in this one. The beats are cool, too. This is one of my favorites.

Last Words - 9/10 - Dramatic and kinda epic sound. It's awesome.

This is a Call - 7.5/10 - Eh, it's alright. A little slow for my liking.

Rawkfist - 10/10 - All right!! This is the one that introduced me to TFK! This song is just so full of energy!

Faith, Love, and Happiness - 9.5/10 - A kinda loud song about paranoia. Reminds me of "Papercut" by Linkin Park. It's got a cool, mysterious beat to it.

I Climb 10/10 - I love this song. The drum patterns in the chorus (I climb/so high/it blows me away sometimes) are simply amazing. This song rocks. ^_^

Quicken - 10/10 - "My life's just like a prison. We shout but no one listens." This song is like my anthem. I love it so much, and the music's great when combined with Trevor's vocals.

New Design - 9/10 - This is the song I listen to when I feel sad or angry. The "sometimes I feel so alone" line in the chorus is just...awesome.

Bounce - 8/10 - More of a dance club song, not really meaningful. Nice beat though.

Ordinary - 10/10 - Don't be fooled by the first few opening notes. They're really mellow, but then it goes into a metallic riff. The way Trevor raps is ill. And the kinda mellow stuff in the middle is cool, sorta like a ballad. This song is definitely one of my faves, too.

Break the Silence - a bazillion/10 - This song is so cool!! ^.^ It changes tempo kind of a lot, but that's what makes it so great. The "no holds barred" part is great, along with the part with the guy at the end (Is he British or something?) Saying "...Bring it on, Bring it on." This song is one of my favorites all-time, for any band. It makes a great ending to the CD.

ROX!.......2007-03-01

This CD gets my blood pumping! My favorite tracks are 1-5, especially the title track "Phenomenon", and "Rawkfist". The latter has a bit of a rap vibe to it, as does "Bounce", another one that I like. All the songs are good, but some of them I had to listen to a few times before I liked them. But not the first 5.
An underlying Christian message, but not obvious. I gave it to my stepbrother, just telling him they were a metal band, not Christian, so that he would actually listen to it. You have to listen a few times before you hear it, but it's there. So you can listen to it with your kids in the car, no guilt.
If you like to listen to hard, loud rock but don't like cringing at negative or profane lyrics, PICK IT UP.

Tight.......2007-02-26

Thousand Foot Krutch has changed their sound from album to album, and I think this one sits best with me. The riffs are sweet, the bass lines are catchy, and the drums are anything but typical. And what to say about the vocals... simply put, this guy sings like no one else out there!

I love that they did not write anything on here that they hoped would be a single, perhaps with the exception of Rawkfist, which is my least favourite song on the CD. It just tries too hard to be catchy. That song aside, here's what I think of the rest of the album, song-by-song:

Phenomenon - Good opener... slowly builds from verse to chorus. A lot of rhyming makes it easy to remember!
Step to Me - I love that the entire verse is bass, drums and vocals only. No crunching guitars until the chorus!
Last Words - A song that was inspired by, and will likely impact, those who think about committing suicide. Great message!
This is a Call - The only slow song on the CD, it touches the heart of today's adolescent mind. Uncertainty, insecurity, in search of something strong and true to hang onto.
Faith, Love and Happiness - Another great rocker. Not the most original song, but still a great listen.
I Climb - Written in a minor key, this one's a little on the somber side but very catchy!
Quicken - My favourite song on the CD, perhaps. Great bass line. Awesome lyrics! "The way Your words connect my thoughts!"
New Design - This song rocks! I love the whispering behind the actual vocals... adds a lot of depth to the song!
Bounce - Originally released on X-2003, this one was redone (and improved, might I add) and fits in perfectly with this release.
Ordinary - My favourite part is the "Laugh if that makes me ordinary!" just after the halfway point of the song.
Break the Silence - Good end to the CD. The first couple minutes of the song are somewhat ordinary, but the last minute is sweet!

So there it is, folks. If you don't have this album yet, you're missing out. It is a fine work that can be enjoyed both by Christians (the lyrics hint strongly at the band's faith) and non-Christians (nothing preachy or corny to turn anyone off) alike.

Just plain good.......2006-05-18

Lets face it; today's music scene is awful. I've pretty much stopped buying records on a regular basis since 2003, and for good reason; almost nothing is worth my time anymore. I don't want to hear a million and one rock/emo/pop bands that ALL sound the same and ALL post cute pictures on their myspace to compensate for their lack of talent. Thankfully, though, there are still a few bands out there worth a listen, and TFK is most definatly one of them. I actually got into this band through their thrid record, the art of breaking, and to this day it's still my favorite tfk record. Phenomenon is a close second though, with an equal ammount of energy and diversity. My only complaint would be that the last three songs are too heavy on the hip-hop (something not found on the art of breaking), but other than that, it's a 5 star listen. Trust me, if I actually think it's worth spending 10 bucks on, it's gotta be good. Buy it.

It took a while for this to arrive, but this was so well worth it. Every track on here is absolutley ridiculous. Vlad and Dirty damn sure did their thing. If you are a Biggie fan, you need this to be in your collection. It's amazing to hear Big over somebody else's track. In most cases, it sounds like the beats were made just for him. If cats want to see how hip hop is truely done, they should give this a listen. Just do it quick. I paid 5$ for mine, and the price has already gone up. 5 stars. Without a doubt.

this album was awesome. it has biggies lyrics over todays hottest songs and some old west coast beats. plus it has alot of his freestyles and alot of his songs that were never released on any of his albums if you like biggie you need to cop this album!!!!!!

ETID has put out another insane album. While this one is a lot different than their previous releases, its not worse in any way. Some people think they've sold out (I guess because of the singing?), but I think thats pretty far from the truth. The thing is ETID has stayed true to form (unlike Hot Topic drag queen sellouts Eighteen Visions). Even though there is some catchy singing, there's also plenty of breakdowns and unorthodox time signatures which we've come to expect from them. 5 out of 5. Definately worth buying.

Sweet Jesus..........2006-08-11

I am an open minded guy when it comes to music. I go for mostly death metal and grindcore of all sorts, but this also branches off my interest in technical hardcore, such as Drowningman, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The End, and Every Time I Die. However, this album was a disappointment to me. The clean vocals are annoying as heck on this CD, and it tends to be steering more into a mainstream sound. It's kinda disappointing if you're mostly into "Last Night In Town" era ETID. Overall, if you're fan of technical hardcore/metalcore, or older metalcore before the explosion (circa 2003), stay away from this and stick to their older stuff. If you can stand the clean vocals and the "party lyrics", well, you can get it, I guess. Whatever.

It's damn good.......2006-07-15

For the first few times I listened to this album, I wasn't hooked. To be honest, I hated it. But after pushing through the whole album about 6 or 7 times, I loved it. It's different but the hooks are there for sure. You just have to listen to it a few times.

Hot damn!.......2006-05-30

Last year, Every Time I Die released the fourth album of their career, the follow up to 2003's "Hot Damn." Some music fans probably think that "Gutter Phenomenon" (which was named album of the year by "Revolver" magazine) isn't very easy to listen to. Some might be frustrated that it doesn't flow more fluidly, or that the singer isn't very multi-faceted. But, on the contrary, most mathcore fans will find this disc's constant, punching, groovey, Sabbath-y riffs, pounding/thumping drums, throat straining vocals, and lurching/shifting rhythms as familiar as church bells. But "Gutter Phenomenon" does have a few defining characteristics. First of all, Keith's vocals are a lot higher pitched than some other noisecore bands (like Norma Jean). Second, upon further inspection (once you listen closely), you'll realize that some of these songs (like the first track, "Apocalypse Now And Then") have real, clean singing. And lastly, a lot of these songs have actual, honest-to-goodness hooks! Highlights include the catchy, staccato beat of "Kill The Music," the very fast and heavy "Tusk And Temper," "Champed At The Bit" (where Glassjaw screamer Daryl makes a cameo), "Guitarred And Feathered" which is brimming with breakdowns, and the unexpectedly rhythmic album closer, "Pretty Dirty," which is complete with stop-start guitars and a very catchy hand clap pattern. So, once you know what to expect from this album, you should definitely realize this is some pretty damn fine hard/mathcore.

Ive tried to get into this band and it just never happened. Theres so much hype around them and no follow through for me at least. This album is anything but good. I wanted to shoot everyone involved in making this record after the first 2 songs. I cant stand that whining! Totally sucked! Dont get pulled into this band. They f#$kin suck. They even look like a bunch of fairies. They probly do each others hair and nails before each show, naked and covered in crisco or somethin

LL handles the mic confidently, almost too confidently, on Phenomenon, his seventh album. Whether he's going on about a messed-up father-figure, working on the ladies ("Nobody Can Freak You," "Phenomenon"), or "making a rhyme with every syllable of your name" ("4,3,2,1"), you can't help but feel like he's just selling you something. LL has built himself up considerably from the skinny punk rocking the bells in '85 to a true celebrity phenomenon, but somewhere on that journey he lost his soul. Strangely, the best tracks on the album employ guest vocalists like Busta Rhymes (on "Starsky & Hutch"), Cannibus and Method Man (both on "4,3,2,1"), where the guests unintentionally feel like the voices of ghosts, reminding LL of what it was like when rap music sold the beats and lyrics, instead of breakfast cereal and khakis. --Todd Levin

Phenomenom is a okay album that finds LL working his formula of chick songs with the occasional slamming posse cut. 4,3,2,1 is that joint, with Uncle L dropping one of his fiercist verses ever!

Impressive.......2006-01-23

This came out when LL was at an all time high of his carrer. After a few successful movies and albums, LL's move to Lifestyles of The Rich and famous was a giving. YET..when he released this album, I wasn't expecting something this good. After a bunch of albums that I felt just didnt measure up during the early and mid 90's, 1997 proved to be good with Phenomenon. The title track is a treaure, with a smooth flow and amazing beat. Even though there is some filler material on here, there are some great songs in on this including great hip-hop artist as Redman, Busta, DMX, Cannibus, and Method Man. This one is really good folks, and the best he did since 1987's Bigger and Deffer. What a way to celebrate a 10yr aniversy of one of top 25 hip hop albums made...ENJOY

This disc represents the world of hip-hop/rap itself.
Solid backbeats drive hypnotically and keep you hooked while LL
smoothly delivers the storytelling and lyrics. The lyrics diversely feature humor and all-the-way-live partyin' fun of all kinds in some songs and thoughtful, socially-conscious, moral themes in others. Additionally, a couple of slow jam rap songs have been well-executed. LL makes scintillating use of all of the guest vocalists and rappers on the tracks where they appear. Samples of soul classics deftly thread together the beats.

Everything about PHENOMENON (the production, the samples, the guest appearances) tells you that LL intended it to be a blockbuster release, one that confirmed his position as the one old school rapper who was still very relevant in his second decade as a performer. The album was a commercial success, but it artistically fails to satisfy. LL obviously spent a lot of time putting the disc together (with every production trick in the book), but failed to project much energy in the writing and performing areas.

He sounds flat out exhausted on the title track (#55 Pop, #16 R&B, #14 Rap), which also suffers from possibly the most repetitive hook that LL has ever committed to vinyl. Several songs suffer from overobvious samples (as is the case with "Candy" and "Hot, Hot, Hot"), while other tracks ("Nobody Can Free You," the whiny "Don't Be Late, Don't Come To Soon") are blatant copies of songs from MR. SMITH. The hit "4, 3, 2, 1" (#75 Pop, #24 R&B, #10 Rap) features plenty of guests (Redman, Method Man, Cannibus, and DMX all contribute), but the disjointed track has no central melody and sounds like four different songs stitched together.

On the plus side, "Starsky & Hutch (with Busta Rhymes) and "Wanna Get Paid" are energetic and fun, and the hit "Father" (#18 Pop, #12 R&B, #1 Rap) is a real classic. With the combination of a haunting instrumental (a sample from George Michael's "Father Figure," used very effectively) and LL's intense performance and lyrics, "Father" is the only track on PHENOMENON that truly can stand next to LL's best work. Nearly everything else is misguided, at best.

Phenomenon, starsky & hutch, 4,3,2,1, candy girl are all great tracks. This album is better than average for sure.

The scariest thing about this CD is that it works. Perhaps more well than some think it should. Seriously, I love the concept, and I can't find very much in the way of negative things to say about it except for one thing--one impotant thing: the mixing sounds terrible. Each mash-up has amazing potential to be a fixture on my playlist were it not for the terrible unevenness of the CD's overall sound; some tracks are pumped beyond reason with bass, some are completely lacking in midrange, while others are hissing acid needles with high-end. Several of the tracks sound like at least one of the songs, the rap or the rock, was pulled from a badly-compressed MP3. For its ambition and exciting textures, the end result sounds disappointingly amateurish in the way of production. Be warned: if you care about your ears, you're probably going to have to rip this CD to your hard drive and remaster it yourself before really enjoying it. But if you've already blown a ton of frequencies right out of your ears, I think you'll love this CD right out of the case.

The only reason I got this CD is because I heard that Mike Shinoda was on it. I bought it off of eBay. The 1st time I popped it in, I didn't like it. I thought that DJ Vlad and Roc Raida were fools for butchering rock songs with rap verses. But, the more I listened to it, the more I realized the great blend of rock and hip-hop. Some of the tracks don't really work together, like DMX rapping over "Smells Like Teen Spirit". That one just doesn't work. Overall, this is good. This kicks Linkin Park's butt. if you are an LP fan, BUY IT. If you like both rock and rap, I highly recommend it.
