It can't be said enough: Gomez is probably the most unlikely name for a five British kids who worship Tom Waits and the Grateful Dead. But that's nothing compared to their sound, a growling brand of blues-rock that sounds like it originates on the Mississippi rather than the Thames. The group's previous album, 2002's In Our Gun, was all about experimenting in the studio. Split the Difference, then, is Gomez getting back on track. The band makes a decent attempt to revive the homemade feel of its early recordings, turning up at least two winners in "Extra Special" and "Sweet Virginia," but it seems like a compromise. While the three-part harmonies soar, a distinct lack on inspiration suggests the band would rather have another go at pushing buttons and name-checking Kraftwerk. "We Don't Know Where We're Going" seems to say it all. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
A great indie rock album by Gomez!.......2006-01-07
Gomez's "Split The Difference" is a great indie rock album with a lot of catchy and fun tunes. Tom Gray and Ben Ottewell do a very goob job on the vocals, though they're not perfect. One of them (I'm not sure which one is which) has a really good voice, but the other has a rough voice which is a little questionable. This second singer might turn some people off, but I think you'll get used to him over time. Every song here is very good, and there's also a couple hitworthy songs ("Silence" and "Sweet Virginia" are the most notable). The musicianship is pretty interesting and always catchy - you definitely won't get bored listening to this. If you like indie rock then chances are you'll like this album a heck of a lot. Absolutely recommended!
Highlights include:
"Do One"
"These 3 Sins"
"Silence"
"Sweet Virginia"
"Chicken Out"
"Extra Special Guy"
Don't give up on this CD!.......2005-08-02
I had never heard of Gomez, but one day I happen to come across the group on the internet. I'm always looking for new artists to check out. I love all sorts of genres and artists.
I was curious and looked at Vh1.com and Split the Difference happened to be their most recent effort at the time so I clicked on it and listened to it.
At first listen, I only gravitated to a few songs. I immediately took to "Sweet Virginia" and "These 3 Sins", but not much else.
I decided I wasn't giving it a fair try, so I listened to it again...and again. Slowly, I began to love the CD.
My absolute favorite tracks are: "Catch Me Up" (I really, really love this song), "Sweet Virginia", "These 3 Sins", "Silence", and "Extra Special Guy".
Now I'm really interested to check out their previous efforts to see if I like it as much as Split the Difference.
This is a really solid effort, and I love it!! Definately give it a try.
New and wonderful direction.......2005-05-01
After a few spins, the album grew on me (much like Liquid Skin). The sound is diverse and lovely - and they are amazing live!
Standout tracks are "Sweet Virginia," "Extra Special Guy," "There It Was" and "We Don't Know Where We're Going." It's a great CD.
It takes a few listens.......2004-12-31
Dont give up on it. Much like In Our Gun, it took me a few listens to really appreciate it. To be honest, the first couple listens I really didn't like it and was rather disappointed. Now I am a believer. Gomez is one of the best bands around and gets better with age.
Disappointing.......2004-12-12
Gomez has carved out its niche among UK bands by avoiding the retro pop bandwagon (think Badly Drawn Boy), the electronica bandwagon, and the knob-twitching pop bandwagon (think Radiohead)--heck name your bandwagon and they avoid it, which is good. Instead, Gomez goes for progressive hard rock. At their best, Gomez sound annoyingly like Pearl Jam ("Do One," "Where Ya Going?"). At their worst, Gomez regularly serve up stale riffs and a healthy dose of meandering bull----. I dare anyone to make it through the CD's finale without lunging for the remote and punching mute.
Standout Tracks: None, though if a gun were held to my head, I'd choose "Do One."

Customer Reviews:
The vinyl version is better.......2006-02-19
This is the film version, and it is inferior to the original album release. Often times, soundtrack releases differed from their film versions because composers could tweak passages here and there and get a relaxex, dedicated recording, away from the harsh deadlines of film making. The result was often glorious, as was the case for Jerry Goldsmith's Patton.
Add the famous George C. Scott speeches as prologue and epilogue and you have a classic. But only on vinyl. The vinyl version has better audio quality and is a better performance. It is a shame we are stuck with this dubbed version, which ironically is available on the Patton DVD as well.
Do some research!.......2006-01-14
This is a great CD for collectors. This is the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK to the film. These arrangements are the ones that were ACTUALLY USED in the film, NOT the ones that were on the album with the speeches. So, if you are looking for the opening and closing speeches, you won't find them here.
Why?
Because there are actually THREE different versions of the score for this FANTASTIC film.
There was another version conducted by Jerry Goldsmith in 1997.
And.... there was ANOTHER one that was recorded in 1970. THAT is the one with the speeches. As far as I know, it has NEVER been released on CD. Hopefully, at some point, someone will see fit to release that version. Personally, I feel those are the best arrangements of the music used in the film. Or, better yet, make a special edition using all 3 versions.
So, you should be HAPPY to have THIS version as well.
By the way, I believe this info is in the liner notes of this CD.
Missed oportunity!.......2006-01-06
While I can appreciate that this release is a very competent recreation of the musical content of the original vinyl, I too was totally dismayed at the absence of Patton's speeches(as delivered by George C Scott) which are virtually inseparable from the music for anyone who owned the original vinyl release. All of which subsequently leaves this release a rather hollow experience.
Two classic scores!.......2005-11-22
This cd includes Frank DeVol's score for the Robert Aldrich classic, "Flight of the Phoenix"; an exciting score for an equally exciting movie. Goldsmith's justifiably famous score for Patton features the original recordings, including the haunting "echoplexed" trumpets. Also, the previous reviewer's one-star rating is rather inexplicable considering this is FILM SCORE release. Why would soundbites from the film be included? Bizarre. All-in-all a great package and a limited edition (only 3,000 copies). Get yours while you can - you won't be disappointed!
Missing the Best .......2005-06-25
This album does not have Patton's opening speech or the closing "All Glory is Fleeting" speech. It misses the two most important segments of the original soundtrack.

Love Me, Tracie!!.......2007-01-12
"Love Me" (my fav from this set) alone is worth getting this album.
Strong beginning ("This House") and actually, this album rides right along nicely with "Save You Love", the first single then dips into the sensual groove with "Tender Kisses" without un-packing any dance floor all while making a consious statement about homelessness and interracial dating with the video for "Tender Kisses". "This Time, (Make It Funky)" marks Tracie's 'rapping' debut, but as fun and dancable as the song is, hopefully she won't be doing a Michael Jordan/Baseball move. And of course, we wind down to the "Love Me" which is sure to pack more bedrooms than dancefloors (as it did when I was hanging out listening to R&B with my friends in 1992). The music arrangements alone grab you before being fully embraced by the suductive delivery of Ms Spencer while still a minor. Classic R&B love song!!
Pick this CD up NOW!! Tracies best set yet!!
Back In The Day.......2006-12-31
Before Aaliyah took you back and forth, Brandy wanted to be down and Monica had one of them days, you had two of the best young singers in Tracie Spencer and Shanice. Tracie Spencer clearly had a voice beyond her years, and "Make The Difference" does just that. Standout tracks include the early 90's smash hits "This House" and "Tender Kisses", plus Honourable Mentions like "Love Me" and "This Time Make It Funky". This was the young singer at her best.
Tender kisses!.......2005-08-09
WOW, Tender Kisses was GREATTTTTTTTTTTT! What ever happen to Tracy Spencer? That one song alone, along with the video is the BOMB, diggity! :-)

She was the GIRL back in tha day.......2004-03-04
Tracie was such a role model when this album was released. She had talent and mass appeal. I miss that in today's teen market.
She was an award winning songwriter for the hit single "Tender Kisses" which is still impressive for a young black woman. I loved that song when I was getting tenderly kissed in those days. This album is dated for the most part but the nostalgia factor is high enough for a buy and a listen if you are of those who Tracie moved and got moving back in the early 90's

Get Your Goat On............2006-01-10
With lyrics that appeal to young and old, and amazing musical chops that expand the genre of what is defined as "children's music", the energy is amazing from start to finish. You'll be sneaking this one from your child's CD collection when they're not looking, and play it loud and play it proud.
Good for big kids too!.......2005-12-11
Not having kids, I can't speak as a parent. But as a longtime Terri Hendrix fan (and a discriminating fan of great music in general), I love this record. Terri's always had "fun" songs and serious songs on her records, and I've always been partial to the serious stuff but enjoy the fun stuff too because I admire her scope and ability to make you, as she put it in one song, "cry till you laugh." Her kids record is ALL fun, but smart and moving, too. And true to its title, it's all over the place: pop, folk, sing-alongs, techno, country and even a little punk ("Nerves" has gotta be the craziest song she's ever done, and you can tell she had a blast rocking out on it, too.) The whole record plays like a big, warm happy smile. Oh, and if you have kids, I suspect they'll dig it, too.

Album Description
Recorded in collaboration with acclaimed record producer, Joel Dorn, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's The Sameness of Difference is a living, breathing, pulsating testament to the 12 years that the trio has spent together. It is unquestionably the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's piece de resistancea post-modern jazz masterwork. Throughout the album, the band explores their influences, which stretch from cutting edge indie rock to experimental electronic music to classic pop, all the while rooted in an obsession with the modern jazz canon. They offer interpretations of music by Bjork, The Flaming Lips, Charles Mingus, Neil Young, Brian Wilson, Dave Brubeck, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. Their own material is also well represented, as original compositions, "Santiago," "The Maestro," "Halliburton Breakdown," "Slow Breath, Silent Mind" and "Davey's Purple Powerline" are etched in stone for the first time ever in the studio. The Sameness of Difference was recorded at Sear Sound in New York City. They tracked the album's entire repertoire in one marathon session. As always, it was the group's complete and utter commitment to improvisation and creating in the moment that served as their most reliable muse. And it's in the lineage and spirit of the countless classic jazz records that were recorded in a day's time that The Sameness of Difference resides. The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey performed over 100 dates in 2005, including a tour as the opening act for Les Claypool, appearances at high profile festivals such as the JVC Jazz Festival, High Sierra Festival, 10,000 Lakes Festival and the Iowa City Jazz Festival and numerous headline shows from New York City to San Francisco. They were also voted the No. 2 "Rising Star Electric Jazz Group" in DownBeat's 2005 Critics Poll. They recently made their concert debuts in South America and Europe.
Customer Reviews:
A bit more on the mainstream for Jacob Fred, but still WONDERFUL!.......2006-11-16
This is a knod to some of the more popular songs that probably had an influence on Jacob Fred. As such there are more popular tunes in here, although they are somewhat of a challenge to identify. Electric Ladyland, some Beatles, Neil Young, really a nice selection of tunes from the 60s and early 70s. JFJO is a band that will continue to please a wide range of listeners from the Jamband crowd to the Jazz crowd. This is an excellent compilation of songs, and I am looking forward to hearing their next outing.GO SEE THEM LIVE!
No Sameness in new Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey release.......2005-10-22
When one thinks of Tulsa Oklahoma, a home to modern jazz musicians isn't usually the first thing that occurs. But Tulsa was the breeding ground for The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Over a ten year period, the band honed their craft through thousands of live shows and nine recordings.
Their latest release, "The Sameness of Difference", is a quintessential piece of post-modern jazz which plays tribute to a number of influences and mentors. Pianist Brian Haas, Bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Jason Smart have assembled a fantastic mix of originals and covers, each a seamless voyage to places far from Tulsa.
Stylistically, many of the songs on this album reminds me of the moody, sparse European-jazz tinged elements of The Carla Bley Band and some of the early harmonic experiments of Pat Metheny, Jan Garbarek, and legendary bassist Charlie Haden found on a number of ECM releases from the early eighties. Mathis uses octave pedals to create the Metheny-esque soundscapes, losing himself in meditative renditions of Hendrix's "Have You Ever Been to Electric Ladyland" and Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down". In their more spirited moments, they take on a Chick Corea/Stanley Clarke-type fusion on originals "Santiago" and "Halliburton Breakdown", Mathis and Haas improvising feverishly, trading off high and low ends. Throughout, Smart's drums have a Jack DeJohnette kind of sensibility, using cymbals, high hat, and brushes effectively to fill some of the darker pieces. Producer-extraordinaire Joel Dorn touches up the trio with understated studio effects, unwilling to dilute the pure edginess of the trio.
The only downside to the album for me was the brief time slots allotted for each tune. Playing jazz is a lot like catching fireflies in a jar- the sense of play one has in such an exercise should be prolonged as much as possible before the prey is captured and ultimately released. There were a number of times where it felt like Haas, Mathis and Smart were just beginning to groove on one another, stretching out into uncharted territory when the songs end. Maybe this is a result of the limitations inherent in radio play, or maybe the band wanted to fit as many of their favorite pieces as they could into an hour. Whatever the reason, the short lengths made it difficult at times to feel apart of the odyssey. In many ways, the album is like a cruise ship which docks at several beautiful and engaging ports of call, yet sadly, the travelers have little time to explore what's beyond the facade.
Still, "The Sameness of Difference" is worth several listens. It will remain fresh for years to come while up and comers aspire playing on the same level of craftsmanship as The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Perhaps Haas, Mathis and Smart will be the inspiration for younger Oklahoman's playing jazz in the basements and garages of Tulsa, and give the town a reputation for continuing the pioneering musical spirit inherent in jazz's legacy.

Album Description
Ten years since their formation, Cursive offer this collection which includes two previously unreleased songs and ten sought after tracks from their out-of-print 7-inches. Also included is a 24-page booklet featuring the story that is the album's namesake, written by front man Tim Kasher and illustrated by Eastern Youth artist Yuriko Yoshino. Each song is replete with thoughtful composition, offset by Kasher's now signature howl. Building from soft, nuanced intros to anthemic finishes that sear, many songs evoke the cathartic swell for which Cursive have become known. Suburban discontent; romantic, familial, and platonic relationships in trouble; feelings of isolation - all are set against Cursive's delicate balance between calamity and refrain. This isn't an album only for fans. It's a cohesive release in its own right, telling the story of a band, its label, and a group of friends.

The Difference Between Houses and Homes: Lost Songs and Loose Ends 1995-2001-CURSIVE.......2006-07-31
Lost songs and loose ends indeed, this album is quite a collection of sporatically recorded music. This CD has the same melodious entwinement between instruments that a real Cursive fanatic has grown to love. At first I was disapointed with this album because it just didn't have the usual cursive "feel" to it; but once I started to really listen to the whole song-not just the lyrics or the instruments, but the WHOLE song-I reallly began to like this album. For a newcomer- Domestica is the best stepping stone that you can get.BUT,for an avid Cursive fan this the perfect CD.Enjoy. -Sherman.
worth listening to.......2006-07-08
i'm a big cursive fan. this is a collection of old songs and b-sides. there's a lot of treats in here like "the bit just chokes them" and "sucker & dry." "polar" has a bass line that goes on forever and then the ROCK is unleashed!
i only have one complaint about this collection, and that is i liked different versions of two songs - "a disruption in the normal swing of things" and i think "a disruption in our lines of influence." both versions of these songs are good, but i much prefer the other versions. you might have to get those online. interestingly enough, i brought up this complaint on the message board and the bass player said they actually didn't realize these different versions were shipped out to be put on this cd.
A collection unlike any other........2005-12-08
Ah. B-sides, the much sought-after thorn in the sides of completists everywhere. I, myself, had got as many of these as possible, but a few stayed out of reach ('And The Bit Just Chokes Them' from 'Sucker and Dry' and 'A Disruption in Our Lines of Influence' from 'Disruption'), so, when this release was announced, I pre-ordered it right away. Along with all these classic, out-of-print 7” tracks we get two new tracks: 'Dispenser' and 'I Thought There'd Be More Than This' (a connector to 'Proposals', from 'The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song'), both older songs from Cursive's early days.
Cursive has always been one of those bands that you can either love or hate—I know, I know, that's said about a lot of bands, but here it's true, I think: you can either like dissonance or not. And Cursive has plenty of dissonance. So, if you're a big fan, buy this. If not, get the hell out of here and start with something a little more whole: 'Domestica' is their finest album to date, followed very closely with 'The Ugly Organ'.
B-side compilations are never a good place to start with any band; they're too eclectic and hard to connect with—albums are put together for a reason; the songs go together (whether by content or sound), are meant to fit together, and need each other for air. That's why 'best of' records always suck so much—good songs need other songs like them to stay alive. Here, the songs are fantastic in themselves, but only when you're listening strait through them are you even sure of what's going on.
The most interesting thing about this collection is that all of the songs were recorded before their current roster—Stephen Pederson ('Criteria', 'The White Octave') was a member back then, forming a foil with frontman Tim Kasher. Their guitars battled and cut each other, then settled down at pivotal moments. Later, Steve would leave to go to college (and form 'The White Octave'), and Tim would leave to be married. After his divorce (which was, judging from 'Domestica', quite painful), Tim returned and picked up where he left off, sans Steve, who was replaced by 'Lullaby for the Working Class' mainstay Ted Stevens. With this dynamic, they recorded the most important album to date, 'Domestica', before picking up another stray: cellist Gretta Cohn, to record an e.p., a few splits, and another full-length album.
Cursive, the way they were..........2005-08-27
They aren't blowing up the charts, but believe me when I say that things are alot different. In college I was buying these 7" inches and begging computer geeks to burn them on to discs so I could take them in my car. It's come a long way from flipping through vinyl singles at the since gone, Gillman's Record Lair in El Paso, Tx, to grabbing a copy at my neighborhood best buy ( don't judge, it's on my way to work). Let me just say that it feels great to hear these re-mastered and loud. Don't get me wrong, I love saddle creek but some of those wax pressings especially the disruption re-print(black disc, as opposed to original transaparant orange), and sucker and dry(which I could never sync the rpm's w/ the opening riff) just never gave the songs thier proper sound. And i'm not a vinyl hater but these songs just had to be heard everywhere, and all the time. The only complaint I have is that both disruption songs seem to be either mastered completely different or just alternate recordings alltogether. Also the opening track, which i had never heard, is good, but as far as cursive go, a little dated.
Key tracks: Pivotal, Sucker and Dry, A Disruption in the normal swing of things, and A Disruption in our lines of influence. but they're all good.
12 Tracks?.......2005-08-15
The songs themselves are all pretty decent, Dispenser has been one of my favorite Cursive songs. The problem is they also left a lot out. With all those b-sides and 7-inch tracks you'd think they would have made this compilation more than 12 tracks.
If you can't get the tracks elsewhere, buy this, but only as a last resort.

Their best yet!.......2006-09-07
Wow! I discovered Rescue a few years ago on an A Capella music website. I listened to some sound clips from "The Difference" album and ordered it. It was an instant favorite. I showed it to a good friend of mine, and he walked into his house and ordered every Rescue CD that very night!
I have been obsessed with A Capella style music for most of my life, and have many, many CDs of my favorite groups. Rescue is the best I have found to date. I have yet to hear such perfection from anyone else (Glad, Take6, and Acappella are as good, but in a different way). I would highly recommend "2000 Years Ago" and "The Difference" for anyone interested in Rescue. Their Christmas album is outstanding as well.
The Difference is privileged to have the lowest bass singer in the world (Tim Storms) singing on it. Some of the notes he hits are amazing. All in all, this album is among my top 5 favorite albums of all time, in any genre, or any group. The lyrics are superb, and the harmonies flawless. My advice- buy it and tell your friends!
God bless!
Another great CD from Rescue........2006-07-27
Although they are a hometown favorite for me, I love Rescue's style. There is only one song that I don't love to listen too on this CD. Which makes the CD a very enjoyable experience. I would reccomend them highly.

Any band that can come up with such fantastic album titles - before this one there was My Pain and Saddness is More Sad and Painful and McLusky Do Dallas - must be doing something right. In McLusky's case, it' really comes down to volume. With the production assistance of Steve Albini, the Welsh trio creates an unholy racket that is more likely to descend into all-out chaos ("1956 and All That") than it is to aim for some kind of melodic stability ("Kkkitchens, What Were You Thinking"). The end result is more sinister than the Darkness, unrulier than Queens of the Stone Age and just shy of the genius displayed on the band's own previous work. -- Aidin Vaziri

on fire.......2006-05-23
never ones to take the easy way out. after releasing what most fans think is their best album ('do dallas'), mclusky made an album that altogether darker in tone. then they split, like you do
so what of it then? like i said altogether darker in tone but gotta admit i prefer it to previous releases, probably for that reason. it's not just that of course. credit must be given to steve albini and the drummer for creating sounds that reverberate, right from the opener 'without msg...'. to be honest where the album falls is on its two 'gentler' tracks 'she will...' and 'forget...' (coincidence? i dunno...). proof that great lyrics and titles are nothing without tha music. highlights for me are 'msg', '...seamus' (and fair play to getting the spelling correct too!), 'support systems' and '1956 and all that'. those of who who are looking for something a bit quieter well, ...look elsewhere. i'll stick to noise pollution, thanks.
sadly these guys are with us no more (there's even a 'best of' - yipes!). which is a shame cos i'd love to see where they went from this record
4.5 stars, round up
I want to travel by X-wing...........2006-03-03
What can you call this? Punk? grunge? Alternative? Rock? Call it frickin' awesome. These lads were recommended to me by some UK rock band called Larp. In their distinct Brit accents they described Mclusky as "F@#$ing Brilliant. Absolutely f@#$%ing brilliant." I was skeptical but picked this album up and was blown away. their choice of wry and sarcastic lyrics are witty and reminiscent of the tv show "the Young Ones". Very British, but not like a mouth full of vinegar and salt. their melodies and tones are rough, almost garage like, off-key, yet builds itself into an harmony so odd or awkward, it's beautiful. The majority of these tracks are strong and driven, like the nails in my coffin. They rock. The weakest song is one in which the band progressively plays lower and lower, as the singer is merely whispering the words, coming to an immediate crash of sound.
This is a great entry by the Brits and worthy of those who have good taste. They're brilliant. Absolutely f@#$ing brilliant.
A Damn Shame!!.......2005-12-22
So, Mclusky imploded shortly after this bombshell was released. Heartbreaking, I say. This band sounded like no other (at least during the past 10 years). Forget the Pixies influence. The Pixies only wish they could match Mclusky's intensity and humor. Let's hope the Falko and Chappelle come up with something as interesting with their new outfits. In the meantime, please run out and buy this disc along with "Dallas". You won't be disappointed. R.I.P. Mclusky!!
McLusky's final album, sadly [4.5 stars]. .......2005-05-03
Apparently this Welsh trio have gone their separate ways (as of early 2005). Damn. One more awesome band goes down the tubes. McLusky have left behind a small but fairly awesome discography consisting of 3 full-lengths (two produced by the immortal Steve Albini) and a few scattered singles and EPs, all of them highly worthy listening.
The Difference Between Me & You Is That I'm Not On Fire (I swear, these guys come up with the best titles) is thus the band's parting shot, and what a blast it is. Not quite in the same league of consistency as 2002's overpoweringly rad Do Dallas, but more adventurous and still brilliant all the same.
There's a darker, more experimental feel this time around. Feedback consumes all on the louder numbers, turning this into a demented, chaotic joyride led by Malkmous' trademark vocals. Without MSG I Am Nothing kickstarts the album with an exotic, snaking guitar line and the chorus "Everywhere I look there's a darkness," infectious as it is menacing. That Man Will Not Hang, Icarus Smicarus, and KKKitchens What Were You Thinking? continue in this manner. Slay!, Falco Vs. The Young Canoeist, Lucky Jim, 1956 And All That, and You Should Be Ashamed Seamus just plain devastate, huge dirty squalls of noisy rawk. Even the prettiest song (She Will Only Bring You Happiness) has the hysterically morbid lyric "Our old singer is a sex criminal." If that doesn't rule I don't know what does.
Alas, not all is bliss. The horn-driven Forget About Him I'm Mint has a great title (as does Your Children Are Waiting For You To Die) but is kind of a throwaway. And the eight-minute Support Systems is a bit too ambitious for its own good. Still, when it's at its best The Difference.. ably represents the best Albini band not actually fronted by Albini. Essential, along with Do Dallas.
It Will Only Bring You Happiness.......2005-02-19
Not as funny or as catchy as "Mclusky Do Dallas" but certainly more evil, and I'll take evil over funny and catchy any day. You wanna know just how evil this really is? The nicest-sounding song on the album contains the line, "our old singer is a sex criminal" and another song is called "Your Children Are Waiting For You To Die." And don't even get me started on "Slay!" The bad vibes start out right from the soon to be classic opener "Without MSG I Am Nothing" and don't let up until "Support Systems" washes them all away with a wall of feedback and the lines "think of death as a medium sized yellow robot." I feel closer to satan just thinking about it.

Product Description
"Consumption," the 2nd album by Metro Detroit-based Eyestrings, is a complex blend of the aggressive and the delicate, thematically and musically. Songs deal with external and internal restraints, struggles within a society who values the impersonal and the gluttonous, habitually ignoring suffering. 7 tracks over 64 minutes vary greatly in stylistic approach and mood, a dark comedy brimming with musical passages that stick like tar-infused treacle.
Customer Reviews:
Eyestrings ready for Consumption.......2005-11-05
If you bought Eyestrings' debut album Burdened Hands released last year, then you must have been as impressed as I was when you discovered its amazing artwork, booklet, lyrics, production - the whole package that is. I was personally astounded by their perfect presentation, considering they were just an independent band. Things aren't any different on their new release, Consumption, also released through their independent label Split Difference, with an equally haunting cover art done by main man Ryan Parmenter, excellent songwriting which is a bit darker and more developed, and remarkable musicianship.
With two former Discipline band members, Bob Young on drums and Matthew Kennedy on bass, Eyestrings seems like a more mature band with a great rhythmic anchor, soaring vocals that border on a melancholic delivery, and excellent lead guitar by Parmenter's longtime friend Alan Rutter, along with lots of piano, keyboard and percussion elements. Consumption is a darker, deeper and more realized album than its predecessor, punctuated by complex harmonies, incredible vocal lines that could only be rivaled by the likes of Spock's Beard and Porcupine Tree, and fluid guitar textures that range from nylon-string passages to cutting electric solos. Alan Rutter is surely an interesting guitar player. The way he wraps his guitar lines around subtle piano and bass tapestries evokes earlier day Echolyn to me, not necessarily musically, but stylistically he has a somewhat similar approach. He refuses to stay in the same chord longer than a few seconds, always experimenting and often diverting from the other instruments without losing his focus. Fans of Gentle Giant and Echolyn are sure going to enjoy his work on the lumbering piece "Valid for a Week", where he shifts between rhythmic and melodic interactions, playing both acoustic guitars through complex passages built by lucid analog synths and deeply growling bass patterns. Ryan Parmenter's vocals on this song are mournful yet at the same time remarkably passionate, as the rest of the song features excellent vocal melodies sung over sparse piano notes. The song concludes in an almost manic-filled restlessness where multi-tracked vocals move into a hauntingly dark passage filled with an undercurrent of jazz.
Matthew Kennedy is an exceptional bass player whose work with both Discipline and Matthew Parmenter (Ryan's uncle) lends him a lot of credibility. Since Matther Parmenter's Astray album, he has also been involving himself with darker musical textures, perfectly illustrated on the multi-passaged "Code of Tripe", which Kennedy co-wrote with Ryan Parmenter. This is quite possibly the gloomiest Eyestrings song to date, brimming with pretty instrumental breaks, dense Moog sounds, and textural guitar lines. The beautiful flow of the song is broken up by an ominous acoustic guitar and piano passage with a great tonal range. This interlude helps set the sombre mood the song is intended to possess and then abruptly breaks into a hypnotic guitar theme where Rutter's instrument wails madly inviting multiple layers of vocal harmonies, grey synth textures, and eerie cymbal work by Bob Young. Speaking of Young, this guy is truly one of the finest drummers in American prog rock nowadays. Not only does he play his instrument with plausible finesse, he also likes to enrich the songs with various African and other tribal percussion techniques. His amazing tabla and djembe work on "Slate Clean" really enhance the darkness of the piece, lending it an Indian rhythmic feel, with a full bass bottom.
On the instrumental "Groove Seven", we hear blaring organ leads, mood-intensive guitars which generate siren-like tensions, and funky bass rhythms that swiftly adapt to Ryan Parmenter's punctuated synth work. This is another song where the band display their subtle complexity merged into a jazzy context, utilising lots of percussion and drum beats. The last song, "Lifelines", is the album's undisputed epic, clocking in at 20 minutes and going through six movements all of which emphasize another brilliant aspect of Eyestrings. From the opening piano melody and cascading guitar phrases, and even Ryan's vocals, I am reminded of Spock's Beard's The Light period. Glistening cymbals and odd metered drum patterns underlie somewhat operatic vocals and huge Moog sounds. The transitions from one section to another are smooth thanks to the neat mix and production. The song's apex is "Traces" with a soaring guitar melody and excellent vocals that unfold effortlessly. Ryan Parmenter's deep voice which he sustains throughout adds to the atmosphere of the song. Consumption is mainly his creation, but at the same time this album wouldn't be as great as it is with different members or less artistic input by each and everyone of them. One of the finest discs of contemporary American prog rock.
