4 out of 5 stars Very nice...........2006-09-01

I bought this on a whim when I got the "Live at Wolf Trap" DVD (one word - awesome!), and was very surprised by this effort. It's quite good, although if you're looking for more of the old Doobies' style of rock, this ain't it. I would say this is a solid entry in the Adult Contemporary genre, which is undoubtedly why it got very little radio airplay. It's very well done, but it won't appeal to today's kiddies. A couple of the tunes were a bit overdone ("Jericho," "45th Floor"), but much of the disc was/is outstanding. I particularly liked "Angels of Madness," and wonder how big a hit it might have been had the album been released even 10 years ago instead of 2000.

5 out of 5 stars VERY TIGHT.......2006-02-16

Being one of the most popular Californian Pop-Rock band's of the 70's, The Doobie Brothers never ever succeeded in making a tight album from start to finish; except this time.
'Livin' on the fault line' is a 4 stars; 'the captain and me' is a 3 stars; 'Minute by minute is another' 4 stars.
In 'Sibling Rivalry', Amazingly, every song here rates 5 stars.
If you are a little into the Doobie Brothers music and want to buy a real tight great album.
This is the one.

3 out of 5 stars A BIT TOO SLICK AND SLOW.......2004-12-13

The new version of the Doobie Brothers with originals Tom and Pat upgrade their sound with rich textures of production elements that create almost a serene feel to most of this material. Expect no big power chords here. The production is actually very good but dare I say, almost too rich at times, lacking the edginess that most of their releases had . Even the vocals, which include lots of guests, are a bit too layered, harmonized and optimized. <> Sibling Rivalry kicks off with great promise with "People Got To Love Again" and "Leave My Heartache Behind", both of which capture the essence of historic Doobies glory. After that things grind to a VERY slow pace and it's all the way to Track 7 before it picks up again....and then immediately returns to snooze. I mean we're talking extremely Slowwwwww songs. These might work for late night candlelight but it's not at all like any previous version of the Doobs including McDonald. None of the jazz influences he brought to the table are here and that would have lent some spice to the sleepiness of this project. < >
It may say the DOOBIE BROTHERS on the cover, but except for the two openers, and the two closers- the killer cut "Rocking Horse", and the sweet little 5 Corners closer, it mostly doesn't resemble Doobie 1 or 2.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Musician's Album.......2004-12-11

Would somebody please explain why you can't like both the McDonald and Johnston eras of this excellent band? Both line ups composed and performed some fantastic music - if you like one to the exclusion of the other, you're blinkered...

Also these silly comparisons with earlier albums. Two different albums are exactly that - Different! Its downright silly to say this sounds nothing like 'The Captain and Me' - its not meant to sound like it.

Personal taste does come into it. However, it is silly to equate this to prejudice with regard to the perceived quality of music. If you ever seriously learned to play a musical instrument - you will know what I mean.

From a musician's perspective this is fantastic album - the songs are well constructed, the arangements are complex and yet not overdone, and the performance - Wow! The singing, harmonies and sheer musicianship is breath-taking.

Give these fantastic musicians a break and stop being judgemental - sadly, you need no qualifications to pass judgement on art of any form in this day which values style over substance...

Well done Doobies - this is one of your finest albums - and not one duff song on the album. Keep up the good work...

5 out of 5 stars Great music from a great band.......2003-08-02

Got the CD after seeing the Doobies in concert at Williamsport, Pennsylvania. They played the "ol" classics of course, but every song they played from this album was great entertainment. I bought and and can't hear it enough!

    3 out of 5 stars Missing tracks.......2002-08-07

This was a very good CD. The only problem, is that about 10 songs from the movie are missing from the CD. and a few songs had the singer changed from the movie version, and it sounds trerible

5 out of 5 stars Marc Shaiman's work is excellent as always.......2000-11-23

The score of Addams Family Values (in fact a really good movie) is just super! If you like the film you will love the music! Mr. Shaiman used his themes from the first movie and of course the famous TV theme and completed it with new melodies, for example Pubert's theme, Debbie's theme (you hear a fantastic variation of it on "The Honeymoon Is Over" and at the end of "Escape from Debbie) and the Chippewa melodies. Unfortunately there are some missings for a die-hard-fan like me: "Wednesday's Revolt" (an ultimate highlight in movie and on cd) misses the end melodies played by violins. In the film you hear it after the TV theme (when Wednesday shocks Amanda whith making fire). But therefor we can listen to a melodic introduction on the very same sample unheard in the movie. I also miss the music which is played when Pugsley and Wednesday have to sit in the harmony hut and then try to escape. There are a few other nice variations of the music heard in the movie which did not make it on the CD. However it is real good stuff you get. The best of all, of course, is "The Tango"; really exciting!! I also love "The Big Scene" - it is something like a Finale in which the most melodies and themes come together... There is a CD of the first Addams-Family-Movie Soundtrack. If you have it, this one will complete Mr. Shaiman's fantastic work. If you don't have it, buy this one and you will love it even more.

5 out of 5 stars If you liked the movie, you'll love the soundtrack........1998-12-18

Hey Addams Fans! I would totally reccomend this cd. Listening to the music without watching the movie is really different. True most of it IS instrumental, but its really cool and fun to listen to. I haven't been able find the original Addams Family movie soundtrack and I'm not sure if there is one...so this is as close as you get!!! Not only do you get the catchy (I mean ADDIVTIVE) instrumental music, but the "Eat me" song. What more could you ask?

    Product Description

Designed with the busy schedules of teachers in mind, this powerful spoken word CD is 28 minutes of straight-forward, life changing affirmations over beautifully uplifting music. How do you use the CD? It should be listened to every workday, as part of a routine, most likely while the listener does other things. It can be used as you get dressed, as you drive to work, or listened to in your classroom before students arrive. It does not take away time from your day, but enrich the time you would normally spend on other things. I (Carrie A. Chapman) am still a classroom teacher and am enjoying my work more every day thanks to the creation of this CD. I hope you will find it equally inspirational for yourself, or the lucky individual for whom you are purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Effective.......2005-08-12

I first heard about this product on a teacher chatboard. While I was initially skeptical, but I listened to the audio samples and decided to give it a try. I teach at a year round school, and even with track breaks, need inspiration to get through the summer months. I have had it for a few months and really feel a difference in my outlook throughout the day. One funny (but good) thing: there is an affirmation about staying organized, and it must have gone straight to my subconscious because my typically messy desk and work spaces have become much cleaner! I am so thankful and suprised for this added benefit!

    5 out of 5 stars Positively Refreshing!.......2005-01-28

I think this CD is a great idea! I am a parent who has noticed several teachers looking drained and overworked. I bought this CD to give to the teachers of my children. I feel better sending my children to school knowing they are being taught by teachers who are positive and refreshed. This CD isn't just a gift for the teacher, but a gift for the whole class!

    5 out of 5 stars Positively empowering!.......2005-01-28

This is a great Cd to listen to on the way to work. It is relaxing and sets up such a positive start to the busy day. I am not a teacher but it empowers me to get on with what I love to do and gives meaning to feeling positive about life. I am giving this Cd to teachers that I work with in hopes that they will remain happy and feel good about what they do when there is so much stress in their day. Thank you Miss Chapman!

5 out of 5 stars An Inspiration to all!.......2005-01-27

What an inspiring idea! This is great CD for everyone , not just for teachers. The thoughts portrayed on the CD are uplifting, energizing, and yes are definately Fired up! As a teacher myself, it reminds me of why I do what I am doing! We all need a wake up call at some point, and this will do the trick! The music adds a wonderful, soothing touch!

5 out of 5 stars Out of this WORLD!! Not just for Teachers.......2005-01-26

What a wonderful idea this was! Not only teachers can use this. We all, who work in the public in some sort, need these affirmations daily. What an excellent way to begin your day, get yourself ready for all that is ahead. I can't wait to see what Miss Chapman does next, INCREDIBLE. I plan to give this as a gift to ALL my teacher and would be teacher friends.

4 out of 5 stars A solid sophmore release from Providence's Hardcore Kings.......2007-01-01

This being Verse's second record, you'd expect some kind of progression in their music. And progress you shall get. From Anger and Rage is 11 solid hardcore songs with excellent sing-alongs and moshparts, along with incredibly articulate lyrical content.

Through the rough period of the past year or so, dealing with a few line up changes and various other problems, these guys have matured into one of the best hardcore bands in America. Tracks such as "Consume" and the title track deliver some of the best formulated hardcore since Modern Life Is war released "Witness."

The only problem with this record is the musical similarity to the first 2 Bane records. Although the nostalgia is for the most part great, sometimes they break the barrier of remniscient and get into outright ripping Bane off. This is particularly evident in "Hard To Breathe," which has almost the exact same beginning and feel as Bane's classic "Both Guns Blazing," thus accounting for its loss of one star.

If you like hardcore, you'll like this record. If you care about hardcore, you need this record.

    5 out of 5 stars Sweeeeeeet.......2006-09-09

This is one of those cd's that you just want to immidiatley stick some grandiose statement ontop of, you know BS like "bringing hardcore back into the 21st century", but damn I find it hard not to be in complete awe of this record. Basically it's straight edge hardcore the way it was meant to be played, when you put a YOT or a BOLD record next to it, it shines just as bright. I am kinda blushing but honestly this is an f'ing classic album (and it came out no more than 3 years ago!) this is what hardcore is! This is hardcore music, pure and simple. If anyone is bringing hardcore back to the masses it's Verse, the torch bearers of sxe hardcore's rebirth (taking it back from the fakers and the airwaves). It's definatley time for revival, and this is our battle cry, x'd up hands sing alongs and finger pointing, while the fakers will definatley make money off of this (they have before and they always will) Verse and the like are true. Packed solid with sing alongs, youth spirit and conviction, I'm in awe. I haven't felt this way about a hardcore record since I heard Not in this Alone or the first time I heard Minor Threat, honestly it excites me and just confirms the fact that hardcore will NEVER die, it is the most pure and honest form of music I've ever heard and of course liars and fakes will try to make a buck off it, people will sell out and lies will be told, f that! Your going to write off all the kids, the conviction of all our favorite records and the times we had just becuase the guy from Strife broke edge or more than half of Ten Yard Fight ended up selling out? That is stupid, the music is all that matters, the message is all that matters, we don't remeber the sell outs we remeber what they said and what (at that moment at least) they meant. This is amazing music, it gets me excited for hardcore and it's only going to get better, we are on the cusp of another revival brothers and sisters, let's make it last let's make it the best yet! Cause I know I've always wanted to know what it felt like to have the spirit of '88 (hey I was 5 years old man!) and now is our time, the kids are listening, x up, get in front and sing as loud as you f'ing can! Hardcore proud 2006!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-07-05

This CD is amazing from start to finish. Verse is one of the best "new school" hardcore bands out there right now. The CD is angry, fast, and melodic all at the same time. The lyrics are all well thought out. I can't wait for their next CD which comes out in August.
So what if a band gets big or sells out. As long as they stick to their message and do what they love the most....making and playing music.

    4 out of 5 stars ummmm...........2006-05-04

there is something that truly sickens me about seeing this on amazon. i know these guys and i know that they're psyched that they're getting so big, but i'm sure sean and eric both feel really weird about this too.

the review: verse, are, without a doubt in a my mind, the best hardcore band around right now. 4 songs is, in my opinion, the best hardcore record in over 15 years. rebuild is awesome though. straight up hardcore with an awesome message. this is what hardcore should be about.

4 out of 5 stars Hardcore At Its Best!.......2005-05-17

    Review by Mike Watson:

Yet another small label, old school style, hardcore album, but wait.......this ones good? From a reviewer that never thought he'd type that statement, it's true. Fresh from the almost unknown label of Rivalry Records comes Verse, a straight up no frills hardcore band with a positive message and their own twist on the music they play.

When comparing Verse, the obvious is Comeback Kid, using the same fast paced chord progression and style of hardcore along with staying positive and refusing to accept violence in the hardcore scene. The similarities are undeniable. The vocal styling and delivery are even very similar, though Verse does have quite a few more group vocals on the album then Comeback Kid ever has. The main difference is the transitions between songs. After fast paced hardcore, Verse goes into melodic guitar parts to transfer songs, which though throwing the listener off guard is a breath of fresh air into their style of music.

Verse is doing their part to rebuild a better sense of community in the hardcore scene and so should you by picking up this album and taking the lyrics to heart.

4 out of 5 stars Sinner and Saint?.......2006-02-04

I will confess from the outset that I do not much care for the music of Franz Liszt. Second only to Richard Wagner, to me Liszt was the epitome of Romantic excess and glitz. But, the same things that make his music unappealing to me also make his life engrossing. The excess, the yearning for fame, the glitz, and the "musician as persona."

Yes, this was Franz Liszt and NAXOS has done a (typical for them) outstanding job in letting us get to know this composer. In the span of 2+ hours, we are treated to a fascinating and well-told story (or maybe a musical, as about 1/4 of this recording consists of musical excerpts). From Liszt's 'child prodigy' status, to his love for himself, his art, and his women, to his retirement to a Monestary (!?), we see it all: the good, the bad, and the ugly. An original "Behind The Music," if you will!

For all that, I have two complaints. First, while it may not bother some listeners, the actors who play the part of various characters all speak with British accents; no attempt is given to emulate the accent of the actual character (be it Hungarian, French, etc.) In audiobooks, I prefer the characters' dialogue to be spoken in their accent of origin (Huck Finn in a Mississippi accent, Ivan Karimozov in a Russian, etc.) Thus, if felt (at least to me) a little forced to hear Franz Liszt's letters read in a British, rather than a Hungarian, accent.

Secondly, this biography of Liszt breaks with most others in its assertion that Liszt's self-centeredness and philandering has been either overexaggerated (in the case of the former) or fabricated (in the case of the latter). This is not a problem in itself, but such claims demand demonstration. Not only was none forthcoming, but the story only served to REconfirm these traits. How many of the women in Liszt's life were married at the time? Did not Liszt pawn his first two children off on a wetnurse so he could travel about Europe? And did anyone REALLY buy Liszt's protestations that being a musical genius was a burden that he really did NOT want? (He Didth protest too much, methinks!)

Well, whatever your conclusion on these issues (I can only tell you mine), this two CD set is worth hearing. The story is well-told (if at times uncritical) and the music is well selected.

And if you like this set, check out some of the other "Romantics" profiled in NAXOS"s "Life and Works" series: Beehoven, Brahms, Tchaikobsky, Dvorak, and Chopin!

5 out of 5 stars A convincing look into what makes a genius click.......2001-08-14

Naxos is doing a wonderful job with its emerging "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, more recently one of Chopin and now two more, Liszt and Beethoven. Both are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, a discography--and finally something I thought I would never see, the text of the recording's narration. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.

By the way, the Liszt set starts off with the sound of artillery, the Beethoven with the sound of a cork popping. A good way to get your attention and/or to convince you that you have purchased the wrong recording.

Written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann, the production enlists some excellent actors to play the people in the composer's life. In the "Franz Liszt" set (8.558005-06), we have Neville Jason as the voice of Lizst, who is joined by David Timson, Raphael Clarkson, Elaine Claxton, and Karen Archer as the voices of Lizst's friends, critics, and especially loves. The musical selections are drawn from the bottomless well of Naxos recordings.

As I commented with regard to the Chopin set, the music is well chosen but some of it simply lasts too long for those who are eager to get on to the facts of the composer's life. On the other hand, this IS called the Life and Works series, and perhaps a balance is to be maintained between the two aspects.

Liszt's idiosyncrasies make a good comparison with those of Chopin, the former doing everything he could to call attention to himself, the latter withdrawn--but both acting like bloody fools in so many ways. Perhaps that is the price of genius. The tale of Liszt and his Countess Marie is both funny and painful, especially in the way they neglected their children (one of whom was Cosima, the future wife of Wagner).

You will note that this set is on 2 CDs where the others are on four. I draw no conclusions from that other than the obvious. A wonderful buy, all things considered.
