Hailing from the United Kingdom s Isle of Man hardly a bastion for the blues Back Door Slam is fronted by 20-year-old singer, songwriter and guitar prodigy Davy Knowles, and has already begun to develop a following in the U.S. via high profile performances at SXSW in Austin and the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis. From the same Running Media Group management stable as multi-platinum Grammy nominee Corinne Bailey Rae, they recorded the album at the Isle of Man s DAM Studios with RMG s Dave Armstrong producing.

One of the season s most compelling debuts, ROLL AWAY finds Back Door Slam displaying its powers of what has been described as "Back To The Future Blues" on a diverse program of tough rockers, moving ballads and cleanly executed blues. Highlights include the guitar-driven opener Come Home, the dark Albert King-styled Heavy on My Mind, rock-funk groover Takes a Real Man, and the album s one cover song, the highly-charged Outside Woman Blues. Too Good for Me is a quiet, change-of-pace piece featuring mandolin and guitar; it is more folk than blues, more Bruce Springsteen than Stevie Ray Vaughan. Stay is a powerful paean to a fallen comrade (the band s original rhythm guitarist, Brian Garvey, killed in an auto accident in 2004), while the title song, a reflective, largely acoustic track with Celtic overtones, deals with a young man s love of his safe, idyllic home and his need to break away for the uncertainties of the world beyond.

Back Door Slam s name comes from the Robert Cray blues classic, and Cray s influence and that of other blues greats like Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Rory Gallagher, early Fleetwood Mac plus the late Stevie Ray Vaughan imbues their intoxicating, guitar-driven sound. Knowles, who also writes most of the songs, first picked up the guitar at age 11 after hearing Dire Straits Sultans of Swing on his father s cassette. Skipping the usual three-chord songbook approach to learning the instrument, he taught himself to play the classic song in its entirety and, in doing so, also discovered his destiny.
After hearing Back Door Slam at SXSW in March, 2007, Patrick MacDonald wrote in the Seattle Times: I heard the spirit of Jimi Hendrix coming from the open, streetside windows of a joint called B.D. Riley's. It was Red House, executed superbly by a surprisingly young trio called Back Door Slam, from the Isle of Man in the U.K. The club was packed and so was the street outside. Folks were transfixed by this kid on guitar, who played with a fiery spirit and sang with conviction, making the song his own.

Been waiting for this release!.......2007-07-26

Like "MemBen," I saw BDS in the Blues Tent at BSMF, and I've been waiting for the CD release ever since. Davy's guitar sound is as raw and hard core as any we heard all weekend. I honestly thought SRV was back. The crowd recognized what they were seeing, and responded accordingly. We were tired when they finished their set! Get this CD, and see them live whenever you can. You will be glad you did.

Good blues.......2007-07-14

I happened to catch Back Door Slam at the House of Blues in Las Vegas. Just out for a night after a grueling conference, I was in the mood for some relaxing blues. On stage came BDS, to setup for their show. Watching a group of kids, wearing t-shirts, jeans and sneakers, it didn't appear quality blues were going to be heard that night. But then they began to play and for a group of 21 year olds, they sounded real good. In no time at all the audience was into the music. Leag guitar and singer, Davy Knowles, made his presence known immediately.
If you ever have a chance to catch this group, I would advise you to do so. They are good and have a long life ahead of them in this business.

If you like guitar blues, you must own this album........2007-07-09

I saw this band in the Blues Tent at Memphis in May 2007, and they were unbelievable. I have not heard anyone play a guitar like that since Stevie Ray Vaughn. They put on an unbelievable show which received numerous standing ovations.

Back Door Slam Rock With " Roll Away".......2007-07-03

Wow...finally a blues player with grit and who can play and sound fresh!
The cd is fantastic!One of my all time favorite tunes is Outside Woman Blues by Cream and the band do it right on Roll Away! Fantastic voice on this kid and I know that Back Door Slam will have staying power for sure.....I am a fan of early Fleetwood Mac , Cream and Hendrix if you enjoy these as well you will not be disapointed ....Davey Knowles is the real deal and I wish them the best..buy this cd !

A GREAT debut album from a REAL Band with massive potential!, .......2007-06-26

Finally.. the wait is over! After years of waiting for some superb REAL music and genuine musical TALENT to come out of Britain, or more specifically, the Isle of Man..here are the guys who have the raw talent to put the British rock /blues music back on the map. Forget all those slack-jawed, self-obsessed, over-hyped pseudo-celebrities you see on celebrity TV that have as much talent and depth as an empty box of chocolates..BACK DOOR SLAM are THE REAL DEAL.
Guitarist Davy Knowles continues to amaze and inspire with his seemingly effortless guitar playing that draws on so many great influences and takes them somewhere new and with utter class. Also Davy has 'that' voice which puts him into the realm held by only a few rock legends - you won't believe your ears believe me. His songwriting, like his guitar playing and singing, belies his years and you can bet this is just the beginning of something VERY special as audiences in the USA have been discovering on the first part of their 2007 debut tour. The talented trio is completed superbly with fellow school mates, Ross Doyle on drums and Adam Jones on bass guitar who together bring out the best in Davy's playing and their chemistry live is not something you see every day... It's not often that you hear of a band getting several standing ovations at a gig as prestigious as the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, but that's just what Back Door Slam got! Now their debut CD, Roll Away has been released, you can bet that the word is going to spread even faster, and a lot of that live magic has been captured here - though as any of you who have seen them live, dripping with raw sweat and passion will know there's a heck of a lot more to come in the future. A BIG thumbs up to Davy, Ross and Adam!

80's Isleys in a blaze of glory.......2007-05-14

More funk from one of the greatest bands in history...during the 80's, Groove With You is considered an Isley Brothers classic. Take Me To the Next Phase, Coolin' Me Out and Tonight Is The Night are legendary Isley Brothers stuff. It's remastered for a stronger and noise free sound. How could you be unhappy with 2 Isley bros. albums for the price of one? Can't go wrong with this selection.

A Great Isley Two-fer.......2007-03-01

This Two-on-One Isley cd from the UK label BGO collects two popular Isley albums that have never been released on cd in the US: The multi-platinum album SHOWDOWN (1978) and the gold album GRAND SLAM (1981). A slick booklet featuring liner notes retelling the Isley Brothers story and sparkling remastered sound enhance this package.

SHOWDOWN (1978) represented the Isleys at the top of their game when their formula of mixing funk with hard rock was still fresh and exciting. It included the #1 r&b hit "Take Me To The Next Phase" and the mellow "Groove With You". The wailing hard rock tunes "Rockin' With Fire" and "Love Fever" feature crunchy guitar chords and slashing guitar solos by the underated Ernie Isley, while on "Coolin' Me Out" and "Fun And Games", the Isleys go pop without losing their funky edge.

By the time 1981's GRAND SLAM was released, the Isleys clavinet-guitar solo-mellow funk formula was getting a little stale. Thus the entire album sounded like studio outtakes rather than a unified piece of work. It was the first Isley album that failed to produce at least one top-10 r&b hit since 1970's GET INTO SOMETHING. The highlights on this brief album are the beautiful "I Once Had Your Love (And I Can't Let Go)", the inspirational "Don't Let Up" and the top-50 pop hit "Hurry Up And Wait". Ernie's scorching guitar licks save the lame "Young Girls", while "Party Night" and "Who Said", the album's first single, are strictly filler material.

Another Public Enemy album is always good news for hip-hop fans, and How You Sell... carries the torch. Other than a few forgettable tracks pulled from a Flavor Flav solo record, highlights abound here. The rockin' "Black Is Back" and the horn-heavy "Harder Than You Think" serve heavy helpings of uplift mojo. "Sex, Drugs & Violence" features a chorus of kids and peerless verses from KRS-One. "Long and Whining Road," the album's most moving track, sees Chuck D's lyrics leaning heavily on Bob Dylan song titles and one-off references to U2, Snoop Dogg, Tom Petty, Beastie Boys, and more. Dramatic production touches include the muted metal riff of "Frankenstar" and orchestral flavors like chimes ("Amerikan Gangster") and vibraphone ("Bridge of Pain"). As always, though, the music is the message, and where this album is so musically eclectic as to court identity crisis, in the end the instrumental elasticity only mirrors Chuck D's vast grasp of the continuum of social ills that mainstream hip-hop long since gave up battling in favor of greed, fame, provincialism, or all of the above. So in answer to the indulgent question of this album's title, maybe--just maybe--this is how we do it. --Jason Kirk

Taylor Mali is by far the most dominant, original, and flat out boppin' slam poet. Every single one of his poems are filled with pizzaz and emphasis. Mali is not only the man when it comes to poetry, but is a damn good history teacher too. Buy anything of his that you can.

a different Taylor Mali..........2001-01-08

For those who haven't had the opportunity to see Taylor Mali perform, this CD is definitely a great introduction. For those who have seen him perform, it just might lend a different perspective on his work. Those pieces I'd heard performed at slams in the past, particularly "Totally Like Whatever", were somewhat disappointing for me on this CD. This is obviously a guy who thrives on competition and audiences, and the "live" versions of his poems are infinitely better because he really does come alive on stage. However, hearing his work performed without all the high drama of slam competition did give me a chance to appreciate the verbal nuances of his work in a way I hadn't in the past. He's a better and more versatile *writer* (not just slammer) than some people are willing to admit.

The greatest Ever.......2000-10-21

In a new form of poetry, slam, the mix of a great hip-hop type beat placed in the poems and the rap-style speech is a great mix, especially when the poet is sucha talented man and great person. For three years, i knew the poet from being a student of his, and forever will cherish the lessons he taught. As im sure all who had mr. mali will say, he is the best teacher with the greatest peronality you could ever meet. I have heard most of the poems and know the true excellence they display. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys spoken word and contemporary style music.

Disappointed.......2007-02-21

I bought this solely based on Richard Dorfmeister's name. I probably should have done more research and listened to it online, but I've got to say I was disappointed. I love Dorfmeister's remixes, but this wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting down-tempo dubbiness, but this is more like disco dub. If you're looking for mellow - this isn't it.

Richard Dorfmeister is a professional, and this album is nothing less than what you would expect from a pro. Smooth beats and clean transitions. I am not as familiar with MDLA, but if they are good enough for Rich, they are good enough for me. Go buy it...

Won't Disappoint. Great CD.......2006-09-24

If you're already acquainted with Dorfmeister, you know he never disappoints (check out the K & D Sessions, an electronic classic). His down-tempo remixes are always top-notch, and this collaboration with MDLA is no exception. The mixes here are a little brighter and sexier than what I've heard from him before, making it a perfect laidback groove for Summer. His remix of Willie Bobo's "Spanish Grease" from the Verve Remixed series reappears here, as well as remixes of Groove Armada and Zero7. My favorites here have been "Schnitz", and, especially, "Boogie No More". I can't stop listening to that track!!

Rap Masters Return At (Near) Full Strength!.......2006-10-25

The patented sound of rap mega stars Public Enemy has always been one of intense anger and frustration. On the group's newest album, their tenth, that sound finds new ways of releasing the pent-up reservoir of disillusionment that lead rapper Chuck D embodies.

The atmosphere of most of the tracks is dense and noisy, as is usual for PE. However, this album contains tracks like "Bring That Beat Back" and "Makes You Blind", which feature calm enough arrangements to be possible hits in today's rap music scene, while still keeping enough of the hard-core sound that the group is so well known for.

Chuck's lyrics can be a bit confounding and sometimes it sounds as if the ideas covered in one song are all over the place and un-focused; instead of hitting upon one topic per song, for example, he may hit upon ten. Also, surprisingly, there are no songs from humorous side-kick Flavor Flav this time out, but Professor Griff (once kicked out of the group before being reinstated years later) gets a chance on the mic with guest spots on two tracks as well as his own song, "Y'all Don't Know".

"MKLVFKWR" features an intense, exhilarating beat constructed by Moby and powerful, vehement lyrics from Chuck which call out desperately for world peace. It is the type of song for which Public Enemy initially became famous, and it's message and non-stop sonic assault are so invigorating, it forces you to get up and pump your fist in the air.

DJ Lord Aswod has filled the position which Terminator X used to occupy, and he does so very admirably. Listen to his technically amazing scratch work on "Preaching to the Quiet" and "Check What You're Listening To".

The album ends up with "Superman's Black in the Building", an almost 12- minute long odyssey put together in a format which is new for the group. Overall, the exciting beats and angry, yet intelligent lyrics win you over- especially when you consider the low artistic quality of so much of other hip-hop music being released today.

Public Enemy is back! They have returned with an album so good that it nearly equals the artistic heights they achieved with their classics, "It Takes a Nation..." and "Fear of a Black Planet".

It's not too shabby..........2006-10-13

The strongest tracks are "Bring That Beat Back", "MKLVFKWR", "Revolution", and "Superman's Black In The Building". That Instrumental track #9 is tight and I wish Chuck woulda used it for an actual song. Track 4 I coulda done without and 6 and 7 I think kinda weakened the CD right smack dab in the middle - for me anyway. Track 12 is ok but not much replay value for me personally... but the rest is decent.
It's nowhere near as remarkable as "Nation of Millions...", "Fear of a Black Planet" or "Apocalpyse '91"... I don't even think it's as good as "There's a Poison Goin On". Still, you will probably like this CD if you want some political music and aren't tired of the lame play on words thing ("New Whirl Odor"? C'mon now...)

Public Enemy Digress Into Late Career Irrelevance & Laziness.......2006-04-15

For about the last 15 years PE's output has been fairly sporadic and uneven. I suppose it would be an unfair expectation for PE to maintain the peerless qualitative apex of their best albums: It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Fear of A Black Planent, and (to a lesser extent) Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black - albums so powerful and influential it would be almost impossible to overstate their importance. Since 1992 they've made a few competent, but unspectacular albums that either recycle their best work [There's a Poison Goin' On (1999)], or emulate more contemporary rap productions [He Got Game (1998)]. New Whirl Odor is an album where PE seem dimished to dull antiquity status.

Most PE album titles since Apocalypse 91 have been pop culture derived puns, but New Whirl Odor is their first album that is just as cheesy as it's title. During their peak, PE's music was characterized by an abundance of complex, cogent ideas: An album like Fear of Black Planet has so many sonic and lyrical facets you can listen to it numerous times and still find something new. Contrarily, NWO is characterized by a more simple, single or dual layered production a la Dre/Eminem, but lacking their creativity and vibrance. While the mix contains many musical elements of peak-era PE (voice samples from prominent black leaders, shards of urban noise, etc.) it becomes evident early on that producers Johnny Juice and Abnormal have limited, repetitive tools they apply to virtually every song. Consequently, the production is facile, hollow, and becomes tedious after the first few tracks.

Thematically, PE is just as weary. To be fair PE lyrics have always served as propaganda, but on their best work Chuck D was among the most formidable rappers and potent wordsmiths ever to hold a mic, capable of making the most white-bread suburbanite appreciate his afrocentrism. But on NWO even Chuck seems weary to the point that his lyrics and delivery sound like jingles more than compelling agitprop. Not only are his lyrics ineffective, but he rallies against all the same foes he's targeted for the past 20 years: the media, Bush (sr or jr), institutionalized racism... whatever the topic, his lyrics are generic, and his delivery just isn't inspired to enough to put them over.

Maybe NWO is the type of album we should have expected from PE. At this stage of their career music seems tangential: Chuck D hosts a weekly radio program on Air America, while Flavor Flav hosts a pitiful reality show on VH1. Still, it's a huge disappointment from a band who has made some of the most powerful, innovative popular music of all time, especially at a time when pop culture (and rap in particular) desperately needs an entity like PE to serve as a counterpoint to the waning megalomaniacal 'bling-bling' culture that currently dominates hip-hop. Instead we get an empty, lethargic album from a band that seems unconcerned with how irrelevant they've become.

And face it, if you are reading this review then you are more likely than not a really hardcore Paul Weller fan, and you found out that he helped his ex-wife cut an album between The Style Council and his first solo album, and you are wondering if you should get it.
Since you can get it here at Amazon for 99 cents, I say why not? You won't listen to it much, unless you think The Style Council's house days were where it was at, but you'd like it to be a bit more Smooth jazz/Sade. (That makes it sound slightly better than it actually is.) As a dated curio it is kind of fun. The Young Disciples album was much better. If you have a clue as to what I'm talking about, pick this up. Otherwise pretend you just read a one star review.

can't be described. This is pure artistry. It swings, it grooves, it makes you shake your head and wonder how Major can hit those scatted notes AT THE SAME PITCH as his arco bass playing. The interplay between the 2 is inspiring. This is not a CD for the faint of heart, but if you have what it takes then you'll love this.

A Bass Players 'Must Have!'.......2001-02-15

You gotta catch 'Slam' and 'Mule' cuttin' on this killer recording. You'll have no problem telling one from the other and Dick Hyman and Oliver Jackson lay down great comping and interplay. This recording is oozing with melodic content and and humor. I wanted to hear more bass and less vocal the 1st few time I listened to it but the more I listen to it, the more I like the mix. Put it on after a Jaco or Victor Wooten CD and see how the masters do more with less. If you play or like the bass, it's money well spent.

Humor and lyricism in equal measure........1999-11-01

This is an unusually entertaining selection of tunes, some of which are not often heard in the jazz repetoir,an example of which is Orphan Annie's "Tomorrow". You should be amused by the title piece which plays with the standard," Close Your Eyes". Slam and Major Holly create fascinating patterns an octave appart (Slam high and Holly low) with their unique bass stylings. Dick Hyman plays against the contrabasses for the necessary relief.

Slam is absolutely on top of his game here. Does great with dueling duos, such as previous collaborations with with Eroll Gardner and Stephan Grapelli. Major Holley is a great foil for Slam. Recommended v. highly.

This disc is very well done, but it is odd and takes some getting used to. Slam Stewart and Major Holley HUM ALONG to the bass, an octave apart. Be warned--but give it a chance.

Fantastic Album.......2007-03-16

Since we have finally gotten over the fact that PE doesn't always have to have the Nation or Fear sound of the late 80's and early 90s, that leaves us to appreciate the sound that they do have today. Beats and Places is one of the most refreshing albums I've heard this year. The production, lyrics, sound quality is all top notch. It is not a complete thesis statement like their past albums but it does challenge the listener to reflect on many of the issues of the day. For example Grand Theft Oil points a finger directly at the bush administration's unjust war in Iraq, the song Electric Slave is a pure classic and Air Conditioning is a true example of real hip hop. Overall I love this album and I hope PE keeps putting out great music whether the masses buy it or not.

REAL Hiphop is in effect!!!!.......2007-01-16

I said it before and I'll say it again, this is what REAL Hiphop music sounds like. As a Part-time music producer, Chuck D and the rest of the PE camp never fails to stimulate my mind and creative juices. I have always loved this group. Lyrically, Musically and overall talent just leaves all these new FAKE Hiphop rappers and groups way, way behind. P.E.'s producers should give some of these rookie producers classes on beat making. Just the imagination and thought process that goes into P.E. rythym tracks blows me away! The engineering and final mastering is awesome! Chuck D oversees and makes sure he has top quality production and is involved in every part of the projects from "Yo,Bum Rush The Show" all the way to this new album. From the intro to the last track is an explosion of Beats, Wisdom and Power!!! Keep em' comin' and I'll keep buyin' em'!!

I first saw KJ rundown some smooth vocals that fell from his lips on the DVD: "Godfathers and Sons" directed by Marc Levin (2003). This documentary explores the Chicago blues, the influence of Chess Records, and the connection between blues and hip-hop...The ElektriK Mud Kats (aka Electric Mud Band) with vocals by Chuck D, Common & Kyle Jason - "Mannish Boy."

I was hooked ever since... Exhilarating to say the least!

I brought a CD...and it played REAL MUSIC!
What a concept.... real instruments played by a bunch of people to make music! This is a great album, from soup to nuts, there's something for everybody here. The lead vocals are amazing (singer who can sing)... These guys are onto something! To top it off, theres some social commetary!
GREAT CD!
DVD could have been a bit better, buy it for the music!!
