5 out of 5 stars Thunder Gods Return!!.......2004-09-15

What can be said but a resounding "YESSSS!!!" Thunder returns with their brand of excellent classic British hard rock! It was a sad day around the turn of the millenium when the guys announced their retirement from the music scene. In the meantime ,Mssrs. Bowes & Morley released a 'soulful' pop album, seemingly just being tired of the whole 'big machine' of record deals, promotion et al. As fate would have it,they got so much fan response that they just couldn't stay disbanded!! Shooting At The Sun' is the awesome result of their reformed efforts in the studio! Arguably one of the band's best releases, this one has all the great trademarks of their best albums (for me,'Behind Closed Doors'& 'Laughing On Judgement Day').Any fan of classic British rock-Zep,Bad Co.,Whitesnake..Hell,you name it-would LOVE this band! don't let them be one of your 'undiscovered jems' any longer! Dive in and see just what you've been missing the last decade or so..ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2004-02-16

Like all thunder's albums this is GREAT!!
Great vocals with rock music if we were in the 70's this band will be a classic!

3 out of 5 stars Typical Thunder - no surprise!.......2003-04-30

Thunder started out as a very promising hard rock band carrying on the British approach similar to Bad Company and Whitesnake. Their debut titled "Back street symphony" from 1990 was indeed very good. Thunder kept on recording albums in the same musical vein throughout the 1990's but decided to break up due to lack of success (lousy backup from the record company?) after the release of "Giving the game away" (1999). After a couple of solo projects (Luke Morley's "El gringo retro" 2001 and Bowes & Morley "Moving swiftly along" 2002) the guys decided to reform Thunder again.

The musical core in Thunder has always been lead guitarist Luke Morley who write 99% of the material, and even 'tho Thunder have a very gifted singer by the name of Danny Bowes and a good song writer in Morley, I would prefer if the band had more variation in their music. On "Shooting at the sun", the musical direction is as it always have been, but in a way I believe that this album is not quite as good as "Back street symphony" or "Behind closed doors" from 1995 (their finest?). The songs are rather similar to one another and Bowes' voice sounds a bit strained more than occasionally. Don't get me wrong, this is a fine effort and songs like "Loser", "Everybody's laughing" and "Out of my head" are all very good but in the long run it all melts together in a slightly boring way. Thunder have always had a thing for (acoustic) ballads and a song like "A lover not a friend" is about as good as any other ballad by the band. My advise is that Morley get hold of a co-writer in order to create some variation between the songs, and that someone tell Bowes that he doesn't need to go at 125 mph all the time - sometimes less is more.

In my opinion, this is clearly a very strong 3 star album worth having, but I can't agree that it is a masterpiece in any way.

5 out of 5 stars THEY'RE BACK!!.......2003-03-20

The world's most criminally underrated rock band has reformed & recorded another masterpiece for those of us in the know to appreciate. What is readily apparent the minute you pop this disc in is the sonic purity of the affair. It sounds MASSIVE!! State-of-the-art sound, excellent songwriting and playing, along with the wonderful voice of Mr. Danny Bowes make this a disc not to miss! If you're a fan of Bad Company with a slightly harder edge, PLEASE take a chance & buy this! It is worth every penny, I assure you!! They've given us a second chance; let's make the most of it & show these guys the appreciation they're due. They've made a number of consistently five-star cds in the 90s & beyond. A modern miracle, a welcome return, & an early candidate for album of the year!!

5 out of 5 stars David Dondero!.......2004-04-16

If you enjoy the songs of folk and alt country, then you will probably find this album pleasing to the ear. David Dondero's work is really wonderful and he was said to be a big influence on Conor Oberst of the bands Park Avenue & Desaparecidos. I really like David's voice and style of writing.

4 out of 5 stars troubadour in your backyard singing through your backdoor.......2004-02-22

it should be said first that david dondero is a big influence on conor from bright eyes, not the other way around, though they are friends, so it could be vice versa, but this record sounds a lot like david dondero, a modern woody guthrie, outlaw type and general all around good natured songwriter. if you like songs sung sincerely and straight from the stomach, then this might be your ticket to lovely melodies, stringent lyricism and a whole lot of great, great songs. ok.

4 out of 5 stars ok.......2003-10-14

This is an ok album overall. Sounds ALOT like Conor Oberst and any of the Bright Eyes albums.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2004-04-17

Best overall CD I've heard in ages! I recently "rediscovered" the band Thunder as the break-up of my current all time favorite band seems imminent by going out and picking up all the releases I've missed since "Laughing On Judgement Day". By far, I am most impressed with "Shooting at the Sun". Why do they not make (or should I say, PROMOTE) music like this anymore, especially in the States? Thank God the Europeans have not given up on straight-up, blues driven Rock N Roll. Haven't even finished listening to the whole CD yet and I am sold.

5 out of 5 stars "Pay no attention to that 'Lars' behind the curtain!!".......2003-05-25

Sorry to say it,Lars,ol'chap ( the other reviewer here)-but it sounds like you're not that big of a Thunder fan to begin with! This new c.d. is a stellar return for possibly thee most under-rated 'classic rock'British band in history!! I do agree that 'Behind Closed Doors' was awesome, along with 'Laughing On Judgement Day',but if you've ever liked Purple/Whitesnake/Bad Company/Journey and even a bit of the ol' Led Zep,then you owe it to yourself to get this NOW!! You'll soon find yourself scurrying to get the other great Thunder releases as well! ENJOY!
