5 out of 5 stars A release as it should be!.......2007-05-10

This was an excellent set! Both discs are solid, really no intros, he just gets down to business. Sound quality is superb. Anyone normally leary of buying released material, and rightfully so, will not ne disappointed with this album. The only complaint I have is that it was not 3 or 4 discs. Defintely buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2007-04-10

Its one of the best cd's of 2007 so far . From the beginning to end goes BaaaNG, R0Cks.

4 out of 5 stars "arguably the world's best in choral & dance".......2005-02-09

Silva Classics presents "Live in Paris", featuring The Red Army Choir, Orchestra and Dance Ensemble with some of the most impressive musicians and singers numbering over 400 members...when you listen to this album, voices ring true and clear with the gusto of "RUSSIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM" and "KALINKA" seem to jump out at you...these recordings are priceless and have brought the years to the forefront, when this male choir took first place at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1937.

Silva Classics has taken the reins to bring the "ultimate" of full choir sounds, including classical suites and traditional songs...if you love superb vocals with rich and vibrant styles...21 selections guaranteed to take your breath away...rich harmonies and the amalgamation of voices makes the music eternal...among the best choirs of the planet...this album has it all.

My highlight picks are the "CHORUS OF THE HEBREW SLAVES" (from "Nabucco"), "BANDIT'S CHORUS" (from "Ernant"), "SPANISH MEDLEY:AMAPOLA I VALENCIA I GRANADA", Excerpt from "BORIS GODUNOV", "MARCH OF THE TOREADORS" (from "Carmen")", "NESSUN DORMA" (from "Turandot"), "DE QUELLA PIRA" (from "Il Travatore"), outstanding arrangements and excellent performances within each members sections, a must have for your music collection...every performance is remarkable, completely above all expectations...if you love the classics, this will satisfy your cravings.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality.......2006-02-23

This is from a 1987 concert tour. The CD is 58 minutes long.

The sound quality is poor. The sound is distant, the dynamic range is flat, and there is a fuzziness. It is worse on some songs. It makes Johnny Too Bad just bad to hear. The sound quality is bad, but not the worst I have heard. I would say it is equal to Black Sabbath's Live At Last or King Crimson's Earthbound but not as bad as Hawkind's Early Daze or King Crimson's Epitath.

This tour came just as UB40 was changing. The group had previously performed their own, politically charged music. Now they were moving towards becoming a cover band, playing oldies in a reggae style.

Half of the songs on this CD are covers and the other half are UB40 originals. But, even the original songs are more in a pop vein than the group's early work.

Most of the performances are OK to good. For the most part, they seem a little subdued, but it may be the sound quality dragging them down. But, I was never a big fan of UB40's pop stage, except for the collaborations with Chrissie Hynde (I've Got You and Breakfast in Bed).

5 out of 5 stars Better than the studio releases.......2005-07-30

UB40 is one of the rare bands that can perform their craft well on stage and in this album you get the best of both worlds: well played songs with added emotional depth, more athmosphere and clearer vocals of a good live performance. "please don't make me cry" and "sing our own song" on this album are, for me, the best UB40 has ever put out, and among the best melancholy songs of all time. UB40 remains unique in their version of reggae, their cover versions really becomming new originals.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding in every way.......2004-03-15

This album has such great grooves and caught them at their
zenith. Relying heavily on material from the original Labour
of Love and Rat in the Kitchen, this live recording will have
you up dancing in no time. Too bad its out of print having
been released on the now defunct Slash label.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-02-10

This is a really good disc. The band do a great job interpreting their hits from the 80's with a new guitarist. If you're expecting the songs to sound just like the studio versions on Asia, Alpha and Astra, you'll be disappointed. But they sound great anyway, at least if you're like me and actually like a little something different thrown in.

For the most part, that something different is Pat Thrall. No, he does not sound like Steve Howe, and yes it took me some getting used to. He definitely brings his own sound to the mix, but it's still good. The only song where I really missed the embellishments of Howe is "Only Time Will Tell," where Thrall, who is very good, takes a back seat for some reason and lets the other three carry the song while he plays mainly chords (which are very low in the mix on this song.)

Also, he makes an interesting choice on "Sole Survivor," where he only plays power chords (with a cool distortion tone) for the whole song except the end, where he lets rip with a very un-Howe like solo. I also like his solos on "Don't Cry," "Heat Of the Moment" and "Rock And Roll Dream." So I actually admire Pat Thrall for bringing his own sound to the group, although he proves he can play Howe's parts on "Time Again" (which makes his understated performance on "Only Time Will Tell" more puzzling.)

5 out of 5 stars Best live album from Asia.......2006-01-14

In my opinion, this was the last great album or live album released by Asia. though the release date states that it was released in 1999, it was originally released in 1993. that's not the important factor. this was Asia as we know it, with with the exception that Steve Howe wasn't around for this concert. of course his guitar playing is missing, but still with the presence of John Wetton, it was the Asia that we all learned to love and grew up with. (giving my age away here. he he) don't get me wrong, Greg Lake is a great vocalist, but he isn't John Wetton. (and who the hell is this John Payne guy?)
this is one energetic concert, and a asia at one of its live best. budokan concert was ok, but this one def is the one if one is into asia and wants a great live album. remember the sound quality of kiss alive II?

      2 out of 5 stars Grade D+.......2003-12-18

I have always been an Asia fan, more so then, than now. When i first bought this cd, when it first came out, I bought the video too, of the concert. I got home put it in, listened to it, put it up (both of them), and listened too it maybe once evey teo years since then. I sold the video a few years back, but held onto the cd, to keep my collection. I listened too again a few days ago, and I no longer think it's the worst live cd, I have ever listened too, it's got a little better, or I gotten hard of hearing. Palmer is still a bad drummer (on this cd), Wetton is still singing off key and having trouble with the high notes, and Pat, who replaced axeman Howe, is not Howe. Not as bad as it use to be, but still bad.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Asia live album.......2002-12-18

Asia studio records are so heavily produced that when they perform alive it always seems that something is missing. However this is an excellent live album, regardless the fact that Pat Thrall is not as good as Steve Howe.

5 out of 5 stars Great concert in the USSR........2002-08-18

Dont listen to the snobby reviewers here. This is a great Asia concert. The Russian audience add a really cool energy to the whole thing. John Wetton is still the frontman of Asia for me. His performance is really good. Geoff Downes also has an awesome solo including "Video Killed the Radio Star" on here!

You can tell these guys are having a ball up on stage. This was a pretty rare event back in those days of Cold War Soviet Era politics. The concert video/documentary is really good, too. This album is definitely a must for any Asia fan.

Now, if they just would have done a prog version of "Volga Boatmen"!

5 out of 5 stars Glenn Gould live... sensational !.......2006-02-23

Out of curiosity I bought this disc. I already own the 1955 and 1981 recording of the Goldberg variations, which are both legendary for good reason.
But then this recording! What a drive, what a rhythm! Compared to the 1955 recording, I feel it is somewhat more lyrical, some of the tempi are somewhat less extreme. The technical command and concentration are unbelievable. Well, I won't analyze it any more, you just HAVE TO listen to this disc!
The recording sound of the Goldberg variations is surprisingly good. The recording sound of the inventions is not so good, but I have heard worse.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a curiosity.......2006-01-09

[Full disclosure: I either have, or at various times have had this title listed in the Marketplace.]
I had this recording on the shelf a long time before I got around to listening to it. On either side was Gould's 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations and the 1981 recording, like neat bookends to his career. Those two are substantially different readings of the piece, and I think each is a landmark in music history because his playing of Bach is so singular and compelling, especially this piece. I thought (and you might also be wondering, which is why I decided to write this), "Why should I care about a third recording of the same piece by the same player?" I thought it might be mildly interesting to hear how he played it in the 1959 Salzburg Festival, but this is much more than that.

If you think those other recordings of Goldberg are important, wait till you hear this! The liner notes say that Gould himself was aware that he'd "brought off something exceptionally fine," and that's why this is a priceless document. It's not note-perfect, like studio recordings tend to be. But that's not even germane, in fact that's part of the value. Here you have the artist's trademark hermetically-sealed concentration, feel for touch, dynamic contouring, etc., distilled into just over 37 minutes for the Goldberg (more than a minute shorter than the '55 reading). You get the sense he is creating or composing the music as he's playing. He sets a tempo because he determines that the music needs to be a certain tempo, and his fingers have no choice but to follow, and they miraculously do.

But here's the clincher - the sound is good! - for the Goldberg Variations. It's not some scratchy irritating wind-up-Victrola sound, and there is not a lot of audience noise. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the 3-Part Inventions also included on this disc. They are just a historical curiosity for Gould fans; the recording is poor.

5 out of 5 stars Live is best...........2004-08-03

If you want perfection , don't buy this one. If this is your first Goldberg, don't buy this one. If you want passion in the performance of this beautiful music, buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars An historical quirk: Gould plays Goldbergs live........1999-01-20

Glenn Gould's name is invariably associated with firstly the Goldberg Variations, and secondly with his retirement from public performance. Here, however, we hear him playing the Goldbergs live, at the Salzburg Festival in the late 1950s. The recording's sound quality is very good, and the performance itself lies somewhere between the brazen race of the 1955 recording and the aged contemplation of the 1981. But the clarity of the lines is unmistakably Gouldian, and anyone interested in Gould ought to own this historical quirk, a live Goldbergs. The Inventions are also live but unfortunately are severely let down by very poor sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars A Mussorgsky feast beyond praise.......2006-06-11

It was incredibly generous of DG to throw toegther these great performances--one of them legenday--in a bargain two-fer. The legendary performance, of course, is Richter's 1958 Pictures at an Exhibition performed in concert. The rights are owned by Philips, but I don't know if their latest remastering has been used here. The complaints about dreadful sonics are justified: the piano is far away and tinny, the Sofia audience coughs continuously--some of them are lucky to have left with their lungs intact--and there is a noisy exhaust fan in the foreground. It's a testimony to Richter's incandescent reading that it survives beyond all obstacles.

Another high point is the orchestral reading of Pictures under Giulini with the CSO. This was a famous recording in its day, because Giulini took the thrice-familiar music seriously, a bit slower than usual, adding many individual touches. Maybe his approach becomes ponderous and too serious at times, but it's one of a kind, and the solo winds in the orchestra are a delight.

Actually, I was most moved by Vishnievskaya's selection of songs, recorded in the Soviet Union with Igor Markevitch adding his superlative accompaniments--this is Mussorgsky singing of the highest order. But so is Fassbaender's Songs and Dances of Death, despite her lack of Slavic authenticity. Maazel bombs through Night on Bald Mountain with suitable thrills.

In all, this Panorama two-fer can't be faulted. It's one of the very best in the seeries, and several of the choicest things on it are otherwise out of print.

5 out of 5 stars A STRONG REBUTTLE to the "bad" reviews........2006-05-19

155 minutes of music and one reviewer gives these CDs 1 star for couging here and there during 7 minutes of Richter's Pictures recital. Not continually mind you. I DON'T GET IT!
A reviewer doesn't like vocal music..so 2 stars. I DON'T GET IT! Just because one does not like "classical" vocals, doesn't mean they stink.
This is over 2 1/2 hours at single CD budget price. Geez...
Giulini gives a superbly recorded THRILLING performance of Pictures that, in my humble opinion, is second only to Reiner's. Also with the CSO 15 years earlier.
This 34+ minutes alone is worth the price of this collection.
The excerpts from Boris Gudonov are considered one of the best performances in the catalog (Karajan/VPO). 29 minutes and a good way to determine if you want to purchase the complete opera 3 CD set for over $30+ bucks.
Markevich/Vishnevskaya is considered to be the definitive version for the "6 songs".
The Kovanshchina prelude (Dawn on The Moskva River) is one the most heart rending themes in the canon. Simply gorgeous 6 minute piece of music.
I could go on and on.
Sure there are a few "gaffs" on these CDs. Maazel brings in Bald Mountain in under 10 minutes. Whew!
But hey...kudos to the orchestra for being able to play that well, that fast without stumbling over each other. Quite exhilerating acually.
And Then there is Richter's famous/"infamous" Pictures. Yes the annoying cough and a not so sonic recording. But anyone looking for just this track should already have been aware of this problem. "Classisists" have been talking about this problem for 50+ years. Obviously it can't be fixed. But still several coughs in 30+ minutes just makes it sound as live a performance as it is.
So let's recap...155 minutes of music with maybe parts of 15 minutes of minor problems for DISCOUNT bucks. Pretty good math I'd say. Equals 5 STARS where I come from.
Overall, this is an excellent CD for those who want Mussorgsky's major orchestral output in one package at a bargain price.
Top conductors, top orchestras, great performances and, except for Richter's Pictures, GREAT SONICS.
If you want a truly magnificent solo piano Pictures try Pletnev's on Virgin Classics. It will blow you away. And you get the bonus of his own piano transcription of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty which is even better.
          ENJOY!

2 out of 5 stars Review for Richter's "Pictures" Only.......2006-04-24

I was thrilled to find that Deutsche Grammophon has reissued Sviatoslav Richter's famous Sophia performance of "Pictures." I have owned it on tape, but have until now not had it on CD. I was surprised by previous reviews of this edition, since I thought that the explosive coughing had been toned down substantially. My tape broke years ago, so maybe my memory is off. But the re-engineering of this performace has been one of the most needed "retrofits" in the entire classical catalogue. The sound quality of this edition is certainly much better than the old Polydor record.

I also will refrain from entering the "Is it the greatest Pictures ever?"-debate. It is my favorite. One sometimes hears critics dismiss the piano--thus Mussorgsky's--version as monochromatic. But Richter presents a much more percussive version than most others, which may be why some people don't care for it. (My dad played this piece with a more Romantic reading.) It's a matter of taste: I have never cared for the Ravel version, probably because the percussive aspect doesn't translate into orchestration.

I almost never write music reviews, since I'd hate to convince people to plunk down good money on a CD that conforms to my taste but not theirs. BUT, if you have enjoyed this performace in the past . . .

I give five stars to Richter recital, which amazes me still. I agree that his deliberate "clunkers" are distracting. But having listened to this performance for almost twenty years, it is the "correct" playing of Pictures that now jars me. If you love this performance, as I clearly do, you'll be happy to have this CD. Just don't Google the Hartmann pictures which inspired Mussorgsky. It's disillusioning, but they aren't very good!

1 out of 5 stars A bad whooping cough in 1958 in Sofia, Bulgaria.......2006-04-17

I was listening to the magnificient percussion and
overall sound of this double release, from 2000, #469 169-2,
when throughout the 1st CD, which opens up with the Mussorgsky
number PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION, there's an irritating
musician in the room, exhibiting signs of a bad whooping cough,
thereby totally destroying the 20 minutes or so recording!

There are many soft passages throughout the number, and
it is just incredible that DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON allowed the
bad caugh distractions and irritations (cough! cough! cough!)
          to stay on the tape!

Unbelievable! It's so bad, I thought about unloading this
art work, at a second hand music store for a buck and a half,
although I surely paid more than $20 for this double CD release
          a few years ago.

I don't care much for the vocal pieces, either.

Aside from that, the remainder of the release is very strong,
so ...I can't bring myself to unload it....yet, anyway.

          5 out of 5 stars Giant performance!.......2005-06-03

Carlo Maria Giulini has been to my mind one of the most aristocratic, intelligent, wisdom and remarkable conductors in the last Century. Born in 1914, Giulini owns that special touch of genius that has been proved in several ocassions.
There are several works in the Symphonic repertoire whose meaning depends in last instance of your personal world's approach. The list wold be extremely long but briefly I would name five classic works: The Eroica, The First of Mahler, The Ninth of Bruckner, The fourth of Nielsen and this work.
What do you demand from this work? Fireworks, nostalgic approach, musical musculature, effectism or tonal poolish?
Besides a great amount of recorded versions, there is however, a relatively small number of succesful performances from the early forties with Arturo Toscanini, Guido Cantelli and Igor Markevitch in the fifties, Dorati in the sixties and then Markevitch again and Giulini in the seventies.
Giulini gives this work a remarkable stature, enriching the score with sumptuous details and rubatos, smart accents, inflexions, color sense and above all a noblesse spirit that personally I haven't listened in any other previous version.
Go for this golden treasure recording. But do not expect great fireworks exercises. Giulini never searched the gallery' s applause. He was a honest and original master by himself: his personal landmark.
