Excellent for cramming it all onto one disc........2007-05-25
Ever notice that you're seeing more and more of these "best of" collectons out there now? Now there is UMVD's "The Definitive Collection" of numerous artists from that same unforgettable era featuring 20 or more top tunes of the featured artist crammed onto one disc. Sometimes these single-disc collections fail to make the grade because of so much essential material that ends up being left off for reasons of space alone and the rest of it is the same predictable fare. An exception in this case would be this: Muddy Waters' Definitive Collection. This collection runs through Muddy's premiere years featuring his swampy, slide guitar sound and musical style then continues through the '50s and early '60s when he began to make his significant impact on blues music and eventually would be regarded as one of the most highly respected names in blues music. So many of his best tunes like "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I'm Ready", "Forty Days and Forty Nights" and "Got My Mojo Working" were covered by so many bands so many times that these tunes are really timeless and have becomes standards in blues. You really do get and stay interested for the entire length of the album. It is a little slow to start, but it picks up quickly and the bulk of the action happens with tracks 8-18. "Crosseyed Cat", recorded in 1976, is something you really got to hear. It is swampy, raw and tough. A 6 minute jam session, basically. This "Definitive Collection' lives up to its name overall, and is absolutely essential for the blues fan if the 2-disc anthology is a bit much.
Definitive indeed!.......2007-04-13
You want to know about Muddy Waters? This is a wonderful introduction to his work. No single work, of course, can contain all the best songs of someone like Muddy Waters (nee McKinley Morganfield). But this CD is awfully satisfying.
And the first cut is the classic "I Can't Be Satisfied" (later covered by The Rolling Stones). The instrumentation is remarkable simple--guitar and bass. But Waters' singing is primal and gives this cut life.
The 1950 tune, "Rollin' Stone," gave the English rock and roll band their name. The music is raw, but compelling. One line: "I wish I was a catfish, swimming in the deep blue sea, I would have all you women's comin' after me." At another point, he sings that his mom says to his dad that I got a boy child comin', gonna be a Rollin' Stone. A must listen to piece.
Willie Dixon wrote the words for another song, a Waters' classic, "(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man." First, what a backing group! Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann, Willie Dixon, and Fred Below. This is a great blues tune topped off with Muddy Waters' great blues singing.
Another Willie Dixon song, "I Just Want to Make Love to You." Also covered by the Rolling Stones. . . . Listen to this version. A wonderful blues song.
And then there is "Mannish Boy" (talk about a greatest hit!). Again, great instrumental work and a terrific backing band. The song begins with him singing "Everything's gonna be all right this mornin.'" The insistent theme, "I'm a mannish boy," recurs throughout. One set of lines hearkens to other classic music:
"I'm a man,
I'm a Rolling Stone.
I'm a man,
A hoochie-coochie man."
Then there is "Got My Mojo Working." An uptempo romp with a great backing band.
So, do you want to know what Muddy Waters was all about? Try this CD. It will give you the introduction to his body of work.
How Muddy Is The Water Papa?.......2007-03-20
No one has to say anything about a Muddy Water's collection. The music speaks for itself. There is a reason "the man" is rated as one of the best blues artists ever - his music speaks volumes. Enough said. ...April, 28 2007 - I can't believe anybody would even want to read a Muddy Waters review...man that cat needs no reviews...HE IS THE KING OF THE BLUES. The one neophyte who read my initial review and didn't think much of it must not know about the Mud Man so I will add some more commentary for those who evidently are new to the blues. My favorites on this cd were "Rollin & Tumblin: Part One." Those is the know that is the original black euphanism for "sex" or "rock-n-rollin" before Allan Freed made it popular. "Rollin Stone" makes me want to be at a club watchin the man perform live. Muddy gets cookin on "Turn Down Your Lamp (Please Don't Go)." He doesn't usually get so up tempo and bring in the harmonica so ENJOY THIS ONE - IT'S CLASSIC. What can I say about "Hoochie Coochie Man" it is so good that it has been covered so much even to George Thoroughgood. THIS IS A STANDARD IF THERE EVER WAS ONE. "Mannish Man" is so great ... it usually goes by "I Am A Man" oh Muddy gets down on this one. Oh man I got off on "Got My Mojo Working" and I still almost wear this one track out by playing it over and over. How can you not like a song like "My Home Is In The Delta." Muddy talks bout leavin Chicago for the Delta mud .... he is really singin the blues on this one. "Crosseyed Cat" is the closest Muddy get to Jimmy "Harmonica" Reed or Slim Harpo or even somebody like Howlin Wolf.....this is a class song that is not your typical soulful Muddy Waters. Now for all you cats who read this review ... quit readin and start buying. You need Water, Hooker and Wolf to get your collection goin then start addin some Jimmy Reed, Slim Harpo, Hound Dog Taylor, Lightning Slim, Lightning Hopkins and don't ever stop ... but first listen to "Crosseyed Cat" and GET YOURSELF SOME WATER ESPECIALLY THIS DEFINITIVE COLLECTION....Joliet Jayke The Bluze Brother.

Saving the Best for Last.......2006-10-18
Back in the late 70's Johnnie Winters pulled Muddy Waters out of semi-retirement to record three great CD's on the Blue Sky label. When back in the studio Muddy noted that it made him feel so good that it made him 'Hard Again', hence the title for the first and best CD of the series. All are recordings using a live to tape method, which suites the blues and in particular Muddy extremely well. The backing band is excellent, sound quality is outstanding and Muddy is top of form. Each CD has a slightly different feel and each in the set gets a little weaker then the previous. This is relatively speaking given that Hard Again is easily one Muddy's best albums and one of the top ten blues CD's ever made - seriously good stuff. If you can only afford one, buy Hard Again, otherwise just by the set and enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
Ain't No Blues Like Alligator Blues.......2007-05-27
Let's face it folks, with a name like Alligator Records, they've got to be good. Two CDs exploding at the seams with blues in all of its incarnations. Real country folk blues, Cephas & Wiggins, rip-it-up bayou blues, C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, wailing harp Chicago South Side blues, James Cotton, misbehavin' mama blues, Koko Taylor, guitar god blues, Roy Buchanan, thinly veiled sexual reference blues, David Hole, and whole lot more besides. 38 tracks in all, and you probably won't care for one or two of them - but whatever your 10 favorites end up being, they will surely justify the low cost of this anthology.
I've been listening to blues for quite some time, since the days of the Taft administration actually. Even so, a couple of these names were new to me. More to the point, it's a treat having so many outstanding real blues artists (not to be confused with three-chord cheezers who just wandered back from the mall) playing unadulterated blues.
For neophytes this anthology is really a blessing because it serves as an inexpensive, convenient introduction to the blues. Follow any of the artists here down the rabbit hole and you'll enter a whole world of blues. Johnny Winter would be a good place to start, especially because he bridged blues and rock. But purists may be intrigued by Professor Longhair, who would then lead you to Dr. John, etc. Koko Taylor is a world unto herself, man; you better nail down everything in the house before you turn her on because she can blow the spots off a leopard.
The folks at Alligator Records can be relied upon to treat America's indigenous music with respect and love. It's an uphill battle, and nobody's getting rich in the process. They've labored to make this music accessible to the public, and frankly, simply documenting it is an important service. Blues musicians don't have "hits," so there's never much grease to spread around, even when times are good. The music survives because it's raw, it's real, and it satisfies in a way that processed music from the factory can't. I'm not saying you should buy this as a public service, that would be too grandiose. However, I think that when you do buy it, the rich authenticity will hook you immediately. Trust your gator.
Gator Blues.......2007-02-06
Alligator Records records the majority of today's blues artists and this album is a collection of some of the best. I recommend it to anyone who loves blues music
A great collection..........2003-08-07
...with plenty of variety.
The 2-CD set will keep you busy listening and studying for hours.
Probably one of the better blues record companies takes at least one track from their most successful albums ( and some unreleased ), and puts it into a collection every five years or so.
Highly recommended.
My fav. track: "T'ain't Nobody's Business"
fantastic compilation!.......2002-06-28
If you love the blues (and who doesn't, except for those terminally 'mad-at-the-world' types of which I hope you're not one) then this great collection of various flavors of blues is for you! Once again, Alligator Records has put together an irresistable smorgasbord of sound for your listening pleasure. C'mon, dig in! (Just keep in mind that the audio tracks for DISC I vs. DISC II are swapped on the song samples here.)
Bring on the Dog!.......2002-03-26
I bought this just for the unreleased Houndog Taylor tracks. The rest is very good.

Git It Now Before It's Gone.......2004-07-02
Well, this is it. Unless you own the very pricey Sun box set on Bear Family, you'll want to purchase this 3-disc compilation if you are a blues lover and the "Sun Sound" rings your bell. This set is an absolute bargain and it contains most of the best blues titles that Sam Phillips ever recorded. Yup, it's all here; Big Walter Horton's "In the Mood", and "Easy" are in the desert island top 10 for blues harp instrumentals. Little Milton Campbell can be heard doing a respectable imitation of early B.B. King, and Little Jr. Parker's perfect voice is not to be missed. Other highlights are the great Earl Zebedee Hooker - King of the slide guitarists - performing some very rare tracks in the Robert Nighthawk mould plus Rufus Thomas (later of Stax records fame) doing his best to knock Big Mama Thornton's Hound Dog off the charts with his version of Bear Cat. James Cotton fans will be intrigued to hear Jimmy's sandpaper voice (but no harp) on his earliest sides. And not to be missed are one-man bands Joe Hill Louis and Dr. Ross blasting their harmonicas and wanging away on drum kits and guitars sounding like a full blues band in a jook. No doubt that a certain Mr. P. was listening to some of these same titles on his radio set while growing up in Memphis. Informative notes by journalist-aficionado Bill Dahl and some nice photos are supplied in the enclosed 8 page booklet. Get this set now. Like so many of the great vintage blues reissues, this won't be around long and you'll kick yourself if you miss it.
A message from the compilation producer.......2003-09-17
This comprehensive three CD, 75-track collection covers some of the best blues recordings Sun Records has to offer. Featured in this box are tracks by genuine blues legends like: Rufus Thomas, whose "Bear Cat" was Sun's first national hit in `53; Little Junior Parker (including the original "Mystery Train"), Walter Horton, Earl Hooker, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, Little Milton (including his rocking 1953 debut single, "Somebody Told Me"), Billy "The Kid" Emerson's original 1955 waxing of "Red Hot," Rosco Gordon, and plenty more.

the allman brothers.......2007-03-12
what do you need to say...the allman brothers keep btinging it to you, even today they are still incredible...!!!
My God this is incomplete..........2006-06-13
Okay, first off whoever said that Stand Back was a better cut then...oh, I dont know, Ain't Wastin' Time No More or One Way Out? Where are Trouble No More, It's Not My Cross to Bear, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Hoochie Coochie Man, Ain't Wastin' Time, Little Martha, One Way Out and Statesboro f@$%!#ing blues? Hell, even Wasted Words would be a better pick than Ramblin' Man, for instance!
Okay, I'm being a little harsh. It does have Dreams, Whipping Post, Revival, Midnight Rider, Hot 'Lanta and Melissa. But this should be avoided. In fact, I wouldn't recommend any Allmans comp and instead say this: pick up the first four albums (Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach)--all the Allmans one really needs, in my mind.
Beware: You will buy more.......2006-02-05
At first, I loved these 20th Century Masters series CDs. They are so cheap ($6.99 at Best Buy when they are on sale, which is frequently) that you can introduce yourself to 5 new essential bands for a measly $30. With some bands, like Lynyrd Skynyrd, I have never felt compelled to buy anything else by them. "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" are all I really need, the fact that there are 9 other songs on there is just a bonus. Same goes for Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry--the quality of those 50's and early-60's recordings are so bad that I don't want to spend too much on them, good as the songs themselves may be.
But some bands, like the Allman Brothers, deserve a whole lot more. I am about to upgrade my Allman Brothers compilation for the third time--first I got this 20th Cen. best of; then I got the longer "A Decade of Hits," which certainly did not disappoint; and now I have just ordered the two-disc anthology "Stand Back," in order to have every single song from my two current best-ofs, plus some late-career material and a few lost gems, all in one package. Anyway, I'm just warning you: these 20th Century Masters things may do justice to some artists, but they do NOT do justice to the Allman Brothers. You may only be spending $7 on it, but it will have been a wasted $7, because if you have properly functioning ears you WILL be buying more.
For beginners only.......2005-02-01
As with all of the Millennium Collections this hardly does any justice to the Allman Brothers music legacy. But I picked this up at Best Buy on sale for $6.99. If you are a casual fan and want a good sampling of the TABB music to see if you are interested in picking up a more comprehensive collection then this album is for you. This album contains most of their hits and radio staples. This is a good cheap album to put in your collection.
Great Band, Great Music, Great Ripoff........2004-01-15
I first fell in love with the Allman Brothers Band when "At Fillmore East" was first released. I thought it was one of the most incredible live albums I had ever heard, and I still think so today, all these years later. "Eat A Peach" was darned near as good. This is simply one fine band. So based upon the music, I can't complain at all about this CD. But I'm afraid I have to mirror the opinions of most of the others who have reviewed this release-- it's far too short and offers far too little from a band that deserves much better representation. Simply put, why would anyone buy this CD when so many other superior releases are out there for close to the same price? As others have noted, MCA has released a whole series of these so-called "Mellennium Collection" discs, and every one of them is a ripoff. They should be ashamed. With all of the music the artists represented in this series have released, why would MCA choose such a consistently skimpy selection on all of these discs? I can only assume that they want to offer a brief introductory sampler for prospective new fans without cutting into sales of the other albums. If that's the case, fine. But if you're going to offer a sampler disc with only a half hour of music on it, then price it accordingly. With this meager selection, fine though the individual selections may be, I think around five or six bucks would be more appropriate. If you really want to learn about this band, spring for any one of the first five or six albums (for a particularly good value, pick up "Beginnings" which combines the first two albums, each also sold separately, onto one CD). All are excellent, reasonably priced, and a much better value for the money spent.
UPDATE (Dec., 2006): As of this writing, the retail price of this disc (and apparently others in this series) have been significantly reduced. This makes it a far better value than it was when my first review was written, but there are still better discs out there.

Having achieved success with his landmark 1941 recordings for John and Alan Lomax and the Library of Congress (released under his given name, McKinley Morganfield), Muddy Waters moved to Chicago two years later--and took the future of American popular music with him. In 1947, he began recording for Aristocrat Records with piano wizard Sunnyland Slim and band, then alone with bassist Ernest "Big" Crawford and sometimes two or three more sidemen, turning out a body of work unmatched by any other postwar bluesman. This brilliant compilation, produced by Andy McKaie, spans the five years during which Aristocrat became the legendary Chess Records and Muddy emerged as a preeminent blues master known for his raw vocals and vital guitar. Showcased here are such seminal gems as "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Feel Like Goin' Home," "Mean Red Spider," "All Night Long," and "Long Distance Call," plus two takes of the cultural cornerstone "Rollin' Stone." --Alan Greenberg
Customer Reviews:
Very good, but not the place for newcomers to start.......2004-03-28
This excellently remastered MCA compilation presents every known track Muddy Waters recorded for the Aristocrat and Chess labels between 1947 to 1952, which means that "Rollin' Stone" is a find for serious Muddy scholars, but not a good choice for those who are just looking for a comprehensive career overview.
Most of Muddy Waters' best-known songs are missing...signature tunes like "Got My Mojo Working", "Hoochie Coochie Man", and "I Love The Life I Live" were all recorded after 1952, and some will certainly find that these fifty songs are too similar to be listened to in one long sitting. Most of the songs on disc one feature just Waters and bassist Ernest "Big" Crawford, and percussion doesn't show up until disc two has almost run out.
But these early tracks have a lot going for them as well. They show what a great slide guitarist Muddy Waters used to be, and songs like "Gypsy Woman", "I Can't Be Satisfied", "Country Boy", "Honey Bee", and Muddy's rendition of "Rollin' And Tumblin'" are essential parts of the bedrock of Chicago blues.
If you already have the electric stuff, this is where you go for the rest. If you don't, get "The Anthology 1947-1972" or "The Chess Box" first, and then come back to this fine collection.
Genius of Muddy Waters.......2002-06-19
not many Artists can say that the first time they Recorded that it was truly a Ground-Breaking Experience but then again not many can claim to having the Impact of Muddy Waters. His Guitar Playing&Tone have such a Strong Sonic force that you can't get it out of your system. His Vocals hit you as well without missing a beat."I Can't Be Satisfied"&"Rolling Stone are two Cuts that you will have buzzing in your Head for days&Nights easily.when the Blues is doen truly right you can feel the Whole World vibe of it&Muddy Waters gave you the World&thensome.once you hear these Songs you will be come Hooked on the Genius that is Muddy Waters.
The Genesis of Muddy's Career at Chess.......2000-10-29
Not counting his 1941-42 field recordings for the Library of Congress (available on The Complete Plantation Recordings) and a few tracks he recorded for Columbia in 1946, this two-disc collection represents the beginning of Muddy Waters' recorded legacy on the Aristocat (later to become Chess)label between 1947 and 1952.
Waters' powerful vocals and stinging slide guitar playing would become his trademarks on such singles as "I Can't Be Satisfied," "I Feel Like Going Home," "Mean Red Spider" and "Streamline Woman"--all released in 1948. On disc one (1947-1950) Waters is accompanied only by Sunnyland Slim (bass) and Leroy Foster (second guitar on nearly half the tracks). The only exceptions are the addition of drum and piano on "Screamin' and Cryin'," "Where's My Woman Been" and Last Time I Fool Around with You."
On disc two (1950-1952) Waters has added Little Walter on harmonica and Jimmy Rogers is in the second-guitar seat. This disc features classic blues like "Rollin' Stone," "Louisiana Blues," "Long Distance Call," "Honey Bee" and "All Night Long."
This is powerful music and belongs in any serious music fan's library. You can't own too much Muddy Waters. And even if you bought the Chess Box Set, only a third of these tracks were included. ESSENTIAL
There Was But One Muddy Waters..........2000-08-26
And by putting onto a single disc the first fifty recordings he produced for what began as Aristocrat Records and soon enough became Chess, MCA/Universal has done an even stronger service than with that luminous "Chess 50th Anniversary Collection" of a couple of years ago. The moment Muddy Waters plugged his guitar in was the moment the blues graduated from merely American earth music to a universal feeling of the soul, though of course it took some time and tribute to bring material fact in line with actuality. To have heard these recordings in any context was revelatory enough; but to have them now, in just about the order in which the man produced them, is the music gift of the year and then some. The earliest and in many ways most revelatory exercises of his barely-urbanized, drawling vocal style, amplified Delta-cured guitar throb (Waters, almost alone among his disciples, never really left the Delta entirely behind, no matter how advanced or more polished he may have become as the years rolled by), and vivid, near-poetic songwriting get perhaps the most elemental hearing you will ever have at ready hand. If this were a court session, here would be the final argument to the jury that Muddy Waters was the most important bluesman to emerge in full flower after World War II. But you should not need a jury to tell you that he was, at least, the true father and, in only too many ways, the never-equaled godhead of Chicago blues.

Brief but good.......2003-12-11
This is a rather brief compilation, as is usually the case with the Millennium Collections, but the track list is very strong. There are no real rarities to bait the hook for experienced blues listernes, but this is a nice introduction if you are new to classic 50s and 60s blues.
It features some really fine songs by some of the best and most renowned Chicago bluesmen, including Muddy Waters' swaggering "I Just Want To Make Love To You", Buddy Guy's smouldering, intense "First Time I Met The Blues", "Talk To Me Baby" by slide guitar legend Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson II's swinging "Checkin' Up On My Baby", and Howlin' Wolf's awesome "Killing Floor".
As far as "samplers" go, this is one of the best of its kind, and it showcases some great guitar work, not only by the main artists themselves, but also by superb sidemen like Hubert Sumlin and Robert "Jr." Lockwood.
4 1/2 stars.

Muddy Waters's entry in MCA's 20th Century Masters is as good as the budget-minded series gets. True, it's a little lacking in the amount of material--just 12 tracks over the span of 32 minutes--but every one of these songs is a stone blues classic. The set is well focused, too, sticking with some of the great singles Waters recorded for the Chess label between 1951 and 1956--"I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Mannish Boy," "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man," "Got My Mojo Working," and other tunes that are the very cornerstone of Chicago blues. There are other worthy Waters collections covering roughly the same period, notably His Best 1947-55, but this set is fine, too. It's short, yes, but very, very sweet. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Why all the complaining? This is the PERFECT introductory CD to that rolling stone force we still call Muddy Waters.......2007-06-23
McKinley Morganfield--better known as Muddy Waters--made invaluable contributions to the arts. Muddy Waters blended standard southern styles and sounds with the more modern, zesty, urgent flavors of that great city in the north, Chicago. As a result, Muddy also helped to pave the way for true rock and roll to arrive on the scene in the late 1950s and the early 1960s. This CD gives us a sampling of Muddy's greatest numbers. It runs shorter than I would like; but the quality of the material here is quite good. This would make an especially good introductory CD for anyone who wants to know Muddy's artistry better.
The CD starts with "I Just Want To Make Love To You;" Muddy sings his heart out as he plays his electric guitar to perfection. Muddy sings of how he wants nothing more in life than to spend romantic time alone with his woman. The bluesy beat emanates from his southern roots; but the beat also hints at a very embryonic rock and roll style that was to evolve with time. The harmonica bolsters the number to make it more powerful, too. Great! "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" was a signature song for Muddy; and he sings this passionately with excellent diction. The song rocks slowly but very well; the musical arrangement for "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" uses the harmonica and guitars well.
"I'm Ready" starts with some great drum playing at the very beginning; and by the time Muddy comes in you just know you're about to get another stunning performance. The song has a rock and roll flavor that works well with the bluesy feel added by the harmonica. Awesome! I also like the backup female chorus helping Muddy out on "Mannish Boy." "Mannish Boy" celebrates a young man's freedom now that he is 21 years old.
"Rock Me" from late 1956 clearly shows the increasing effect urban rock and roll was having on Muddy's music. The number rocks really well; although the harmonica is great the guitar and other instruments now dominate the arrangement to produce a distinct early rock flavor.
The CD ends with another Muddy Waters signature song entitled "Got My Mojo Working." The song rocks harder than all the others; and the beat along with the lyrics make "Got My Mojo Working" a strong ending to the album.
The liner notes have an essay about Muddy Waters by Joseph F. Laredo; and there are great photos of Muddy as well. The song credits are provided, too.
Overall, this is not the most complete Muddy Waters collection out there; and people are right to be annoyed with 20th Century Masters for not putting more music from Muddy on this CD. However, I would still recommend this CD--as a great introduction to Muddy's work for people just getting to know him. If you like this CD, then I would recommend other Muddy Waters CDs including the two CD set entitled The Anthology: 1947-1972 and the live recording called Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live.
All of the "20th Century" CD's are too expensive.......2004-11-29
Dollar for dollar, the Millennium Collection CDs are disappointing, and that is putting it nicely. I have absolutely nothing against the content on these CD's, but with how much was put on the CD by the powers that be. You can get almost twice as many songs for about three dollars more by purchasing Muddy Waters "His Best" CD's. And there is also the option of the Anthology or the box set. I see these "20th Century" CD's in the store and am always amazed that people buy them. Not just for Muddy Waters, but for numerous artists.
Dollar for dollar, this is simply the worst way to sample Muddy Waters.
Excellent down home Delta Blues.......2002-02-23
This is an excellent sampler of this artists work. What is wrong with these previous reviewers rating the cd one and two stars because of lack of content? This isn't an anthology or a boxed set, it is a way to taste the wares to see if you want to spend bigger bucks for a more detailed collection. Don't shy away from this cd the remastering is amazing considering some of this stuff was recorded in the fifties. Excellent value.
Where's the Content?.......2000-10-06
There should be twice as much music on a Best of CD like this. Flashy packaging masks a lack of content with less than half of the CD's capacity being used.
For shame MCA!
This CD is it! The essential Muddy. Grab it!.......1999-09-11
Muddy and Mr. Mojo never part ways here! Muddy was a precursor for the Chicago Blues, but never forgot his Delta roots. It shows on this CD. Great mouth harp, great all around.

Bring it, Johnny!.......2004-12-02
Winter's rock n' roll collection contains several gems and is a good representation of his style, with some of the caveats noted by other reviewers. Although not really a 'hits' collection, which ruffled reviewer #1, this is still a great dual CD set and worth every penny. The last three songs on Disc 2, Thirty Days, Come On In My Kitchen, and Highway 61 Revisited really scream. The openers, Johnny B. Goode and Bony Moronie are fun and revved up as well. That lil' country boy sure can play!
Now Is The Winter Of Our Discontent!!.......2003-11-14
In 1994, Columbia records released A Rock And Roll Collection, a compilation of Johnny Winter's albums released on that label (and it's subsidiary Blue Sky) from about 1969 to 1980. This two disc set is a perfect showcase for his talented, megawatt guitar playing, but it also illustrates the problems in marketing such a gifted artist. Was he a bluesman, a classic rock and roller, a talented soul/funk/r and b player, what? Not to mention, the one and only bona-fide hit in this whole set ("Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo") was a major chart success only for the guy who wrote it (Rick Derringer), and not the guy who first recorded it (Winter). So, what we have here is a compilation of excellent originals ("Thirty Days," "Hustled Down in Texas,"), some very fine covers ("Miss Ann," "When You've Got a Good Friend," "Rock Me Baby"), some very good live numbers ("Bony Moronie," "Good Morning, Little School Girl," "It's All Over Now","Highway 61 Revisited"), one absolutely Titanic guest appearance by Muddy Waters and his band ("Walking Thru the Park"), and the rest of the cuts, which are mostly pretty mediocre. Some of these songs are hurt by strange decisions in the studio (Why ruin Robert Johnson's classic "Come On In My Kitchen" with a FLUTE solo? And who deleted the lusty background vocals by the Sing Sing Singers on "Thirty Days?); the entire package suffers from a rather bewildering track selection (Why only one cut apiece from Saints and Sinners and Still Alive and Well, two of Winter's best early works?). In sum, this is only a fairly good collection: it seems that Winter solved the material/marketing problems himself by recording nothing but the blues after about 1977; most of his later efforts are much more consistent and listenable. So while you may be discontented with much of A Rock And Roll Collection, there is still much to satisfy the patient listener. Rock on, Johnny!!!
Get It.......2002-10-22
This is a good primer of Winter's early Columbia recordings, 1969-73, for those of you who missed it the first time around or need to restore their collection. It has the two best cuts from the first two albums, "Be Careful With a Fool" and "Highway 61", both unreal guitar showcases, and then other early 70's classics such as "Rock n' Roll Hoochi-Koo" and "Good Morning Little School Girl (Live)". It is varied with straight blues, rock 'n roll and Winter's classic hard driving blues-rock. Well worth the price, as you get the best of about five albumns.
Excellent Overview Of Texas Blues Rock Guitarist.......2001-10-22
Johnny Winter is perhaps overlooked because of the success and tragic death of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Like Vaughn, he also had to overcome his personal demons in the form of a heroin addiction. Tommy Shannon of Double Trouble originally played in Johnny Winter's band. Johnny Winter was the original Texas blues/rock guitar slinger. The 2 cd anthology compiles his material for Columbia from 1969-80. He was signed to Columbia after an article in "Rolling Stone" touted the Texas albino's six-string prowess. This also led appearances at many of the major festivals of the sixties and early seventies including Woodstock in 1969. This set contains 1 unissued track and 1 alternate take along with highlights from his career up to this point. Most of my favorite cuts are the live songs. "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", "Bony Moronie", "It's All Over Now" and a smokin' cover of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" are among the highlights. Another interesting cut is Winter's version of Rick Derringer's "Rock And Roll Hoochie Coo" cut while Derringer played second guitar in Winter's band. The music is great mixture of rock and Texas blues with Winter's stinging guitar at the forefront. He is master of slide guitar both electric and on his National Steel guitar when he elects to play acoustically. Brother Edgar appears on some cuts as well as Muddy Waters on Winter's version of "Walking Thru The Park". My regrets are that each disk is not even an hour in length. No material from his albums "John Dawson Winter III" or "White, Hot And Blue" or his Woodstock performances are included. The set also does not include any of Winter's covers of Rolling Stones tunes like "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Silver Train", "Let It Bleed" or "Stray Cat Blues" which are all smokin'. Also not included are a couple of blues cover tunes like "Walkin' By Myself" and "Messin With The Kid" which I miss. This remains an effective overview of Winter's Columbia period. I would also recommend "Deluxe Edition" which compiles material from his later and bluesier Alligator years with a few unissued tracks thrown in for good measure. My favorite individual albums from this Columbia period are "Second Winter", "Still Alive And Well", and "Captured Live".
