These days, it seems anyone can make an R&B album. However, recording a soul album takes that special intangible element. The 17-year-old Devon, England, native first proved that she has it with The Soul Sessions, a collection of rare soul grooves. She does it here again with Mind, Body & Soul, her first album of original material. For those who thought that Stone could only interpret vintage ballads, witness the midtempo attitude of "Jet Lag." Backed by a thumping backbeat, Stone tells of a love of so all-encompassing that it is physically draining. On lead single, "You Had Me," Stone takes the persona of a woman done wrong with biting edge and a funky wah-wah guitar introduces her "get lost" sentiment over an infectious hook. Mind, Body & Soul also features a host of moving ballads that are reminiscent of the more downtempo fare characteristic of The Soul Sessions. The choir-backed "Security" is an organ-touched tale of love and support in the wake of tragedy. I liked every song!.......2007-07-10

This is Joss Stone's second album and I'm happy to say every song is good. I can't believe how talented she is. Her soulful vocals are the highlight of this album. I first heard Joss Stone on the radio with "Spoiled" and loved it. I was addicted to that song and it still remains to be my favorite song from the album. The first five or six songs are the best on the album but all of them are good. They're well written, well produced and well sung. If you have been curious about Joss Stone then I highly reccomend this album. I now am a Joss Stone fan. This is one of the best neo-soul albums since Heather Headley!

I loooooooooove this album. It's definitley the best of her three. The only songs I don't care for are "Understand" and "Sleep Like a Child". The rest are amazinggggg. Esp You Had Me, Right To Be Wrong, Jet Lag, Killing Time, Snakes and Ladders, Security, and Dontcha Wanna Ride.

When I heard Killing Time, I thought for sure it was a remake because it sounded like such a classic song. THen I looked it up and saw that Joss wrote it, AMAZING!

Premium quality white chocolate.......2007-06-01

I have a thing for white soul singers. No offence intended to black soul singers, who are of course brilliant. It's just that I feel a very interesting and unique vibe when that rare white singer excels at this genre. It is a hybridization of spiritualities. And Joss Stone possesses amazing soul, incredible talent and rich personality. All this at the tender age of 17 when she recorded this album (she's now 19). It's mind-boggling to imagine how much better she can still become.

'Mind, Body and Soul' is a bit of a paradox. It is raw, yet perfect: its youthful rawness itself is very charming. What I ask of listeners is to give it time. The songs are generally very simple, a throwback to the days when music (and life) was simpler and more sincere. Because some of these songs lack a catchy hook and seem so simple, you might not like them at first listen. But have a bit of that patience that music fans used to have, and you might find that the simplicity is accompanied by great sincerity and feeling. It is such a refreshing change in the 21st century to hear music that is simply good and heartfelt, with no stunts.

The songs that most people will like quickly are 'Right to be Wrong' (fabulous musicianship and lyrics), 'Spoiled' (richly sentimental and lush), and 'Jet Lag' (fun). But after about 5-7 patient listens, you might find that every song has the capacity to charm you and connect you with this young genius. The songs that grew most on me were 'Security' (beautifully sincere, stirring, pretty in its idealism) , 'Young at Heart' (youthful idealism and defiance), 'Snakes and Ladders' (energetically soulful), 'Understand' (very relaxed and really fun), 'Don't Know How' (classic-sounding) and 'Sleep like a Child' (tender night song).

The icing on the cake comes with the hidden track at the end. Joss unleashes her angsty side with an intensity and depth of feeling that are astounding for a fun-loving 17-year old.

Not since Vonda Shepard have I liked a white soul singer this much. Joss Stone is phenomenal for a 17-year old and is that rare kind of singer who can really move people deeply even though her vocal technique is still quite far from perfect. She makes up for it by singing straight from her amazing soul.

More of a good thing.......2007-05-31

Joss Stone continues with the formula that served her well in her first album, reaching back for some old school soul and putting her distinctive touch on it. There is a reason that some of the great artists and producers from the 60's and 70's have worked with her, they see that she has the gift to sing SOUL!!

Right to Be Wrong, Spoiled, Jet Lag, and Snakes and Ladders are just some of the highlights of this great album. The mix of songs shows her skill with dance tunes as well as slow jams.

There is absolutely no sophomore jinx here. If you really like soul, just listen to a couple of track samples and you will be hooked!

Stone's Continuation Toward Greatness.......2007-04-20

On "Mind, Body, and Soul," Joss Stone had to follow up her phenomenal first release, "The Soul Sessions," where she took old but mostly unknown R&B songs and reworked them with a magic touch and a magic voice. So the challenge was clear: was she going to be able to do a CD of newer material and capture listeners as she has with the previous release?

I think the answer is a resounding yes. This CD demonstrates that "The Soul Sessions" weren't a fluke and that Joss Stone sounds just as good singing today's soul as she does singing yesterday's soul. She has a voice that shames vocalists with twenty or thirty more years of living than she has, and she seems to do it effortlessly.

"Right To Be Wrong," "Jet Lag," "Don't Cha Wanna Ride," and the other songs on "Mind, Body, and Soul" just prove that Joss Stone has a wonderful career ahead of her.

I have been following the Carolina Chocolate Drops for the last two years, and have been blown away by their talent, their respect and passion for the music and their love for performing. I have never seen a Carolina Chocolate Drops concert where the audience wasn't on their feet by the last song. The band members obviously enjoy performing and bringing this style of music to the listener. And they strive to make you a dancer as well!

This album is a wonderful example of what this talented group can do, and what string band music was intended to be...joyous, rambunctious and full of fun. I highly recommend this CD, and encourage you to see this group live if you have the opportunity. They are worth every penny of your admission! But make sure you wear your dancin' shoes...you won't be able to stay in your seat.

fabulous!!! Just buy it already!.......2007-07-14

This is a wonderful CD i saw them at the live Preformance they did for NPR. This CD is not to be missed!. the music surpasses generations and just is fun and lively to listen to and it is a must to see them in person if at all possible they have such energy and presence on stage and that comes through on the CD as well. After i saw them preform i bought 3 coppies on this CD one for my parents, one for my boyfried and one for me :) i played it for my parents and asked if they liked it and said how could you not like it! i can't say enough good things about the CD or the group, so just buy the CD already.

Wonderful discovery.......2007-06-30

I listened to Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion" this past week, and was bowled over by the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I've replayed their segments on the Internet several times since then and I just keep getting more enthusiastic about them.

I haven't heard their CD, but based upon what I've heard on PHC, it's going to be a "must buy."

I was fortunate enough to hear John Hartford, who died a few years ago, live in concert about 10 years or so ago, and I remember one of his stock lines, after playing a lot of his newer -- or unfamiliar -- stuff, he told about a young woman who walked up to the stage after they were about to begin the second half of their program and said "Could y'all play something we know so we can tell if you're any good or not?"

Hartford's tongue was firmly in cheek, of course, but I can't imagine anyone having heard what I did from the Carolina Chocolate Drops would dare assume that they had anything to prove.

Truly Good Old Timey Music.......2007-03-24

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are something of a throwback. This recording could have been made 75 years ago. All we're missing are the pops and scratches. A great listen and true to the genre.

My favorite track is "Dixie." CCD have chosen to record a song that we often associate with the Civil War and the Confederacy. There is a just enough of an improvisational feel to this track that you forget the negative undertones this song sometimes evokes. Very nicely done.

A nice mix of instrumental and vocal cuts.

I was introduced to the Carolina Chocolate Drops by NPR. They were interviewed and played live on air. I went right away to Amazon to order this cd. I appreciate the great service and received my cds ( I purchased one for myself and one to share with my brother) in a week.

There is no better music to sit around a bonfire to enjoy. That is if you can fight the urge to dance! I am going to see them perform tonight for the first time and I can hardly wait!

I LOVE this album!! Coming from a Caribbean Country (Belize), and being a huge fan of reggae music, it is always nice to find new songs to listen too. This album is so refreshing...it has old style reggae mixed in with all other genres of music. It is just fantastic!!!!!!!! His concert was also amazing. I recommend this album to anyone who is a reggae music fan!

Marley Magic Once Again.......2007-06-11

This is probably one of the greatest compilations of music to come out of the Marley camp--and there are a LOT! This is a remarkable body of ambitious work for Stephen's debut as an artist--having produced much of his brothers' work in the past--including the Grammy-Award winning album from Damian "Halfway Tree". He definitely has his father's eye for organization as well as playing and singing music. One of the best tracks (and for me it is hard to choose--"Inna di Red", the title cut "Mind Control" and "Iron Bars" being on the top of my list) is "Traffic Jam" featuring none other than Damian Marley (I can't get enough of him). Also featured on the album is brother Julian Marley. Buy it! You won't regret it! Genius does run in this family!

Pretty Good.......2007-06-05

I expected this album to be much better after waiting for over a year for it to be released, following the release of the single "Hey Baby". It is a solid effort but just not "outstanding". I think both of Kymani Marley's albums are better buys. The remix of "Hey Baby" is pretty good, and Mos Def makes a nice guest appearance on that track.

Bedtime music guaranteed to put you to sleep.......2007-07-03

Other people may share the difficulty of falling asleep in a different bed when one is visiting friends, traveling, etc. Some friends let me use this CD when I was having trouble sleeping at their place. It does work best with headphones because I have experienced a tingling, the only way to describe that the music was really designed to affect the brainwaves. This really does make you calm and relaxed. You will also never get bored of the tune. I love the idea that there is only two tracks to prevent interruption. Sweet dreams!

Great for afternoon pickmeup.......2007-03-19

My problem with naps (which I think everyone could do with more of) is that I wake up feeling like I've been hit by a car. Taking an hour to use this CD, even if I fall asleep in the middle, does not produce that effect. I highly recommend this if you are dealing with any health conditions exacerbated by stress and/or lack of sleep.

If you are new to sound healing, this CD is worth a try. One CD provides the background and the other the 'healing' pieces.

Emotional Healing - Review from April, 2000.......2006-04-12

With pillows surrounding my body and my headphones on, I relaxed as my body drifted into an incredibly deep sleep. Never have I woken and felt quite so healed or refreshed. It was as if my spirit was vibrating at a new level within my body. It is hard to explain unless you have experienced this place of peace. I am an avid promoter of massage and natural healing. This to me is similar to a massage - but is a massage for the soul. As a child my mother often played classical music for me and swears by its calming effect. At college I often attended many concerts and always enjoyed the classical music the most. I recommend the CD version since Dr. Weil speaks for a few minutes and you may not want to listen to this each time. It is easier to forward to the music. Sometimes I do listen to his voice since it is so calming and you cannot learn everything just listening once. I highly recommend this CD if you need physical or emotional healing. He is onto something and I know you will benefit from this relaxing retreat.

Recognizing that there's no such thing as bad publicity, manager-Svengali Malcolm McLaren molded the Pistols into the most confrontational, nihilistic band rock & roll had ever seen. Propelled by Johnny Rotten's maniacal vocals, Steve Jones's buzz-saw guitar, and (most importantly) bass player Glen Matlock's hook-filled compositional skills, the Pistols' early singles "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen" defined the raging style of British punk. By the time they recorded their lone 1977 album, Matlock had been bounced, replaced by the image-correct but utterly untalented (and ultimately group-dooming) Sid Vicious. I could write a serious review of the awesome musicianship of the music, the fabulous lyricalism of Lydon's lyrics or the tremendously meaningful significant influential and powerful socioeconomic and cultural impact this album had. The Way Punk Rock Should Sound.......2007-07-01

Give me some of that pure Rock 'n' Roll sound!
This is the only 'true'Sex Pistols album and really the only one you need.
Considered by many to be one of the front-runners of punk, but I do believe Iggy Pop and The (Mighty) Stooges did Punk better. Having said that,this has been one of my first punk albums at the tender age of 11 and it instantly opened my ears to a whole new sound of Rock that I never realized existed.
Immediately I could feel the Raw intensity of Johnny Rotten's maniacal voice, snotty, in your face type of attitude bleeds through the speakers from the Wildman that is Rotten himself. One of the first songs - "Bodies" is a perfect example of the pure punk attitude I am referring to - Animalistic fury. Screaming bloody mess! Real Brit Punk, heck Real punk period, out of 1977.
There have been many imitators since The Pistols, but why not pick up the original, in all it's aggressive devestating glory (?)

I don't think I ever heard a debut punk record as good as this. They just don't exist, but yes, this album here did help me on my search for real punk and DIY type bands.
Highlights of mine are "Bodies" - "God Save the Queen" - "Pretty Vacant" & of course the song that the band is known for "Anarchy In the U.K."- Turn it Up, Loud! (the way it's meant to be heard)
...Forget The Clash, sure they were a great band, but if Anarchy had a voice it would be Johnny Rotten's.

Good , Classic Punk .......2007-06-22

This Sex Pistols CD is fantastic,and (to me anyway) has aged well. I still find it rousing and energizing.

Johnny's voice is snide and proud. Why shouldn't it be , he had the best set of rags a punk at the time could wear, but getting back to the music and his voice, it's just a very well put together collection.

I love his opening of "Anarchy" with his sarcastic, sinister chuckle!

I agree that The Sex Pistols are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT musically than The Clash who are New Wave music ,like Blondie.

"Classic Vintage Punk" is what I consider The Sex Pistols, and this CD is EXCELLENT !

"Anarchy", "God Save the Queen" are real pioneer songs now. The political venom of the period.

Also "Submission" and "Pretty Vacant are just as aggressive and exciting as they were back then.

Highly recommended and deservingly over rated !

The people who nit pick about who is "punk", who is more musically adept are missing the point with The Pistol's.
I love all kinds of music, play guitar myself and was never into the punk scene and what went with it.
However, I'll never forget the first time I heard this album and the impact it had on me. It was devastating.
I may have Mozart or Sarah Brightman or The Stones or Coldplay in the CD changer tonight. Maybe Buddy Guy or some Verdi.

Then every so often I will stick in my well worn copy of NMTBITSP and from the moment I hear those marching boots and Steve Jones thunderous Les Paul crashing out the opening chords to Anarchy in the UK ...........I am suddenly 19 years old again with "no feelings..for any body else....except for myself...my beautiful self". Utterly unique and one of rock & roll's brilliant defining moments.

The Sex Pistols album Nevermind the Bollocks is completely amazing. I would say its one of the best hardcore punk albums ever(some other ones are the Ramones and The Clashes London Calling. Every song on it is pure classic, from Johnny Rottens insane vocals on Anarchy in the U.K., to Sid Viciouss nice bass lines on Submission. Nothing has been put out that compares to it as Johnny once said in a interview, and indeed hes right. Because today in 2007 punk rock is a bunch of nice guys who where makeup. Some of these bands are Green Day, Blink 182 and soforth. These type of bands dont deserve to be called punk rock because its a disgrace to all of the grat punk bands. If your a punk fan and dont have it you need it, PERIOD!!!!!

Given their origins, both geographically (San Francisco) and stylistically (founder Joe McDonald and lead guitarist Barry Melton first hooked up in a jug band), it wasn't surprising that the ragtag Fish sounded like an acid-soaked, plugged-in folk band when they debuted in '67. Simultaneously the most political and funniest of all the Northern California bands, the Fish's yippie-hippie philosophy was reflected in songs like "Superbird" (about Lyndon Johnson), "Flying High" (about getting you-know-what), and the bluesy free love saga, "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine." That they could periodically wax serious as well (the wide-angled instrumental "Section Forty Three" and the moody "Bass Strings") only added more bite to their satiric pungency. --Billy Altman

A Masterpiece.......2006-03-29

Wow! What to say about this highly entertaining and great piece of music. So, the Commie Pinko band can really rock! Everyone (conservative that is) back in the sixties thought of these guys as communists and agitators. Funny thing is they only had a few political songs. The rest make some of the greatest psychedelic music to come out of San Francisco.

I remember seeing this album in the record stores and always wanted to get it but just never did. I ended up getting Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die instead. Now that album is fantastic... but we are talking about this one.

Some 30 odd years later, I finally get a copy of the CD. Wow! The tunes are mostly blues based and Barry and David have incredible guitar chops. I particularly like their minor key runs and the fuzz guitar. This group of guys had some real chemistry and I don't know about the third album, but this one and the Fixin' album are just incredible. Favorites are Death Sound, Flying High, just to name a few. Death Sound is how psychedelic blues should be played! When I think back on it, I can hear a lot of Barry Melton and David Cohen influence in my guitar playing.

Highly recommended.

Waiting for the remaster.......2006-03-11

This album is an all time classic, as it is, but would be amazing if it were remastered. Come on Joe, get with it.
As a side note, I melted a hole in my first copy while trying to read the song titles on the album by the light of a lit stick of incense as the record was spinning around on the turntable.
Ahhhh, those were the days...........

Psychedelia's greatest moment was a miraculous fluke.......2004-11-16

Have you ever wondered why ELECTRIC MUSIC is a masterpiece and why all of their subsequent records are absolute crap? Yes, they obviously dried up too soon. But there's a big reason why they dried up too soon. Turns out The Boys lost their religion. Consider the following dialog:

From CJ FISH ON SATURDAY NIGHT [1968] by Richard Goldstein: "I asked him why his music had changed. He straightened up slowly and took off his hat. 'See, we're not what we thought we were.'/'How so?'/'Well, 2 years ago, we believed in music like a god. If you're gonna get into a heavy acid trip, you're gonna get religious. If you stop taking acid, you stop being religious.'/'Our audience knew we got stoned and we knew they got stoned and it all worked in a big circle', Barry added./'Yeah, but music's nothing to believe in. I mean, it's just sound.'/'Do you feel like quitting now?'/'No, I still dig playing. If it got really bad, I couldn't even get up on the stage. But today, the only emotion I associate with music is pleasure. There used to be all kinds of...well...connotations.'"

A lot of people use music to drown out the silence of God. I wish they'd realize that the silence of God is merely the space between the notes. As you can hear in this record's last track: GRACE. My favorite moment in GRACE is Joe's descending delivery of the phrase "every day colored gold". No--wait. I take that back. My favorite moment comes after that. When either Melton or Cohen (I can't remember which) plucks those 4 perfect eerie notes that accompany the phrase "gold our love".

Melton & Cohen are also responsible for my fave passage on the entire record. The guitar section in THE MASKED MARAUDER. Specifically, the churning first part of it. It's a lysergic shade of melancholia.

Profound sadness is also present in the final section of SECTION 43. You hear a hard-to-identify instrumental timbre that sounds like a faint radio signal from outer space. The signal strengthens and it turns out to be Joe's harmonica.

One Thing To His Credit.......2004-07-02

I say this as honest as I can this is one of the most annoying albums ever released. There's no real originality to it at all just alot of blues music. If you heard one blues artist you've heard them all. The only thing different is they have an annoying organ, or keyboard, but remind me never to buy the brand. It just cuts me to the core, and makes me feel so melancholy. To me this is just another San Francisco band that decided to record music played while stoned out of thier minds. If this is for the mind and body sorry my body's supposed to be a temple. Of course strike 2 is the blasted harmonica playing. Having an annoying organ is bad enough, but now you throw a harmonica into the mix you've gone too far. "Section 43" while annoying is rather creative in a macbre sense. I've pictured the little guitar interlude where I get the sensation of walking into a lovely garden, and following where my heart leads the sun is out, and I keep walking along, and spot a lovely girl, and pursue her, and I go further and further without a fear in the world as the sun's shining, but then I'm deep in the woods, and the dark clouds roll in; I rather not tread there again. Anyway I'll stick with the "Feel Like I'm Fixing To Die Rag". I love kazoos. Country Joe knew what he was talking about when writing that song after all he did do time in the navy. That would be one thing to his credit. Otherwise I'm left with the decision to see which was worse; this album, or his forgettable 1971 movie "Gasssss".

If you like the first cd then this one is just as good. The first track goes deep into relaxation making me feel like there is life beyond our every day experiences. This cd will make you think as you relax. listen and experience it for yourself.

I'm a long time fan of Dr. Thompson and have alot of his material.
Without futher ado; the first track is a great piece of ambience, period. Track 2 is ruined (imo) by a grating hiss that's in your face - or ear.
Seeing that he's both veteran musician and doctor perhaps there's therapeutic value in this. If so, he should've included a brief note in the booklet. But track 1 is long enough...

At first I thought this cd was a sign of him washing out. I think I heard a few disharmonic moments - as in mistakes.
This, along with the unpalatable hissing on track 2 gave me the impression of a cheap commercial plug.
But the second and third time around I found track 1 to be very good indeed. It's certainly not like taking a valium tho as it's
got a balance of brainwaves...as compared to say, the Delta program (which has more than delta but i'm talking concentrations).
Others have said there are better cd's for therapeutic effectiveness. Probably. I have the Insight cd which uses a new layering technique and is supposedly top of the line (ie., as good as centerpoint and tmi's cd's - only cheaper and shorter). But this uses rain as a mask. Very boring but you can Really feel the change in states of consciousness. You can actually feel yourself go into - and out of - alpha/theta/delta. Tho with this, it Could be that with just rain you're more aware of the changes.

So I've a bunch of these types of cd's. Now it could be that I don't listen to them enough. But to me, they really don't do anything - besides the enjoyment of listening of course. To, we all go into these states naturally at night anyway.

I can't stop!.......2005-01-19

This cd makes me feel as though someone stuck their finger in my brain and stirred it around. I can't pinpoint what exactly feels different, but I find myself thinking about turning it on all the time. My boyfriend says it helps his ability to concentrate. We've both been sleeping tremendously better. I didn't understand all those other reviews saying it cures 'the blahs' til now. It really perks me up on a break at work. It's easier to stay grounded. I can't wait to try the others!

Brainwave Maestro Composes A Classic.......2004-10-28

I've been following the works of Dr. Jeffrey S. Thompson since 1989, when an acquaintance gave me a cassette recording of one of his earlier primitive works. "The Doctor" has had, since that time, several phases of innovation which have mainly been a progression from the use of multitudinous sculpted sounds and even "noise" to a much more accessible sound with classical aesthetics of beauty, primarily synthesizer based. He recently has developed a technique of, in his words, "creat[ing] pulses directly within the sounds themselves instead of pasting the music on top of sound pulses" (as is quite common with brainwave composers.) This means the pulse is somewhat "hidden" and one is not distracted from the music. Cool. This disc is completely ambient and therefore a superb meditation tool. I must also mention that this is one of The Doctor's BEST productions since he began using the "wall of synthesis." Sometimes he has had what i thought were glitches of noise perhaps from a dirty potentiometer. But, with Thompson, one never knows if that noise is actually there intentionally. This disc, however, is very clean so headphone use is care-free. Finally, his focus on the "Awakened Mind State" makes this a valuable learning tool for serious consciousness explorers. If I was going to recommend one Thompson disc that is on Amazon to someone who knows nothing about his work, this would be the one.

At the beginning of Time Out of Mind, Bob Dylan finds himself in the same dead-day world as on 1964's "One Too Many Mornings." By now, though, he can't be bothered to romanticize the street and the distant dogs' barking; he can only moan about how sick he is of love, of himself. Saying it seems to give him the strength to go on, and go on he does, over 11 songs that are among his most plainspoken and musically eloquent. The reconstituted bottle-blues that sparked the early '90s acoustic masterpieces Good As I Been to You and World Gone Wrong carries over to Daniel Lanois's carefully dirty production and a groove that tops anything Dylan's done in a studio since, at least, Blood on the Tracks. No matter how lousy he feels, this is the work of a mighty, mighty man. --Rickey Wright

Melancholy masterpiece.......2007-06-17

Time Out Of Mind is a masterpiece of atmospheric mood music and evocative imagery, expressed in moody blues numbers and melodious ballads. This mix of blues and ballad is reminiscent of the style of many Tom Waits albums. Although I prefer the folky ballads, the album forms a cohesive musical statement with an impact that lingers long after the last notes have died down.

The bluesy tracks include Love Sick, the almost talking blues Million Miles and Can't Wait, and Till I Fell In Love With You which in its undulating rhythms is midway towards being a ballad. The instrumental mix and arrangements on all of these are raw and gripping and will have great appeal to those who love blues music.

Despite its title, the uptempo Dirt Road Blues is a fast lilting ballad with a catchy tune. The tone changes for the next song, the melancholy and soulful Standing In The Doorway with its stirring organ and absorbing imagery. I suspect this one will eventually take its place as one of the most memorable songs in his oeuvre. Likewise, the beautiful Tryin' To Get To Heaven has elements of autobiography and haunting poetic phrases that stick in the mind.

There is something darkly prophetic about the shimmering Not Dark Yet, a song of ominous foreboding and weary resignation with sublime poetic lyrics, whilst Cold Irons Bound with its driving beat is closer to a rock song. Not surprisingly, Make You Feel My Love is a straightforward and tender love song, and the album concludes with Highlands, a mid tempo rumination with understated jangling guitar.

Working with Lanois previously produced the 1989 masterpiece Oh Mercy and this one is another winning combination. The mood is mostly somber and reflective, perfectly captured by the production which lends added gravitas to the sentiments expressed. Time Out Of Mind is definitely amongst Dylan's top ten works, a truly timeless masterpiece.

A Genuine Masterpiece.......2007-05-08

"Time out of mind the piratical proas of the Malays, lurking among the low shaded coves and islets of Sumatra, have sallied out upon the vessels sailing through the straits, fiercely demanding tribute at the point of their spears." Herman Melville "Moby Dick"

We can't know for certain that Dylan took the title of this landmark CD from Melville's classic novel, but we do know that, based on his statements, he has read Melville, along with other classics. Dylan's sensitivity towards words is matched in the great classic literature. The phrase, "time out of mind" means, according to Merriam-Webster's Third International Abridged Dictionary, "time immemorial."

This recording is one of Dylan's best, if not his very best. Upon repeated listenings, one hears greater and greater depth, as Dylan, adopting a somber tone, ruminates upon his own mortality and the sadness of life's disappointments.

The songs and production perfectly capture a contemplative Dylan, an Everyman of sorts because he has the genius to give artistic voice to feelings that so many people can relate to. The opposite of pop art and pop junk, the music on this recording reaches great levels of feeling. Comparing the work on Time Out of Mind to typical popular music is like comparing the psalms of King David to Hallmark Greeting Card sentiment.

Time Out of Mind reinforces Dylan's legacy as the minstrel poet of his generation. Highly recommended and destined to be among Dylan's most enduring works. In my humble opinion.

A masterpiece by everyone involved........2007-03-29

This is more than a milestone (one of many). This is a genuine historical piece of fiction by a master craftsman.
Actually for all involved. Daniel Lanois helped to bring a Bob Dylan statement a new meaning while completely tapping into the essence of the music's core and past.
Something which Bob has taken great tongue-in-cheek pride in doing his entire career.
A wonderful, stirring, moving and legitimate work of art on all levels. A watermark.

This one didn't thrill me at all, at all..........2007-03-13

I bought this based on rave reviews not long after it was first released. I played it twice and gave it away. I just don't get it. I like his first three records, (the acoustic folk and protest ones) and "Highway 61 Revisited" and "New Morning" and a few others in his extensive catalogue, but the people who rave about "Time Out of Mind" and "Blood on the Tracks" are dwellers on a different planet. I found this one boring and bleak, personal but pointless.

New to Iron Maiden? Piece of Mind is a great place to start..........2007-08-02

The first time I'd heard Iron Maiden was recently, in Guitar Hero II. I played "The Trooper" many times, and it immediately stood out as my favorite (along with "War Pigs"). I knew if I liked this, it would be a good idea to check out more Iron Maiden. So, I did. I purchased Piece of Mind as my first Maiden album, and it did not disappoint.

1. Where Eagles Dare- Great opener, nice drum work in the beginning, and a good guitar riff. 8.5/10

2. Revelations- Sounds like the others in the beginning, but clearly distinguishes itself shortly in with a great riff. 8.5/10

3. Flight of Icarus- Establishes itself early on as different from the others. Another very good one. 8/10

4. Die With Your Boots On- Others liked this one, but I always felt it was decent at best. Slightly different from the previous 3, but not in a good way. Just not as memorable, or classic as the others. 7/10

5. The Trooper- What I consider to be the best on the CD. The Trooper has it all: an amazing guitar part, great vocals, and all the rest. Now that I have the real thing, I realize that this is MUCH better than the terrible Guitar Hero II cover. 10/10

6. Still Life- A bit odd as it starts, with a backwards message occupying the first 11 seconds. It starts off slow (not necessarily a bad thing), and is definitely one of the quieter, slower songs on Piece of Mind. A good one though. 8/10

7. Quest for Fire- In my opinion, one of the more generic songs on here. Still not bad, just not great. 7/10

8. Sun and Steel- One of my favorites, but the shortest on the CD, at 3:26. 9/10

9. To Tame A Land- A nice riff and an overall good song. 8.5/10

Maiden hits their stride; 4.5 stars.......2007-05-24

1983's Piece Of Mind is the album on which Iron Maiden's "classic" lineup came together. With the addition of drummer Nicko Mcbrain Maiden finally stabilized and would go on to record four consecutive albums with the same group of musicians starting with this, their fourth LP.

Whether you love or hate Iron Maiden, you have to admit that the musicmanship is superb. The twin guitar team of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith serves up crunchy rhythms, harmonized melodies, and searing back-to-back solos all with equal aplomb. Murray's firey shred is perfectly counter-balanced by Smith's more melodic approach. Steve Harris' bass is inventive and solid, often coming across more like a third guitar than a bass. Soaring over the top of it all is vocalist Bruce Dickinson, coming across with an operatic vocal style that fits in perfectly with the band's progressive leanings. The new drummer, Nicko Mcbrain, proves himself quite able, although in truth I preferred previous skinsman Clive Burr. Everybody performs at their peak on this album, and these performances are captured on tape by legendary producer Martin Birch. The recording is very good, quite crisp with all the instruments nicely balanced. It's very dry, however, lacking the ambience that usually characterises a Birch recording. I have to say that these remasters are awful. Birch's excellent production work is completely ruined. See if you can find the original CD releases.

This album contains more songs than most of Maiden's other '80s releases, and most of them are superb. Maiden is a band with several excellent songwriters and they truly hit their stride on this album. "Revelations" is a great masterpiece with gentle verses and a brutal chorus, "The Trooper" is blazing rocker with a hard-driving gallop rhythm, "Still Life" is positively spooky, and "Where Eagles Dare" is pure metal mayhem. The album ends on a high note with the great epic "To Tame A Land", based on the science fiction series Dune. Most of the other tracks are also excellent but I have to deduct half a star for the horribly lame "Quest For Fire".

Don't miss out on this great metal masterpiece. If they'd simply left out "Quest For Fire" and gone with just eight songs (like most other Maiden records) this would be a perfect five star album. Pick it up.

1st From The Classic Lineup.......2007-04-22

Exit drummer Clive Burr (who did a fantastic job on the 1st 3 records), enter Nicko McBrain. Now all the stars have been aligned. The greatest metal lineup of the 80's is now ready for business. This is the 1st of 4 (5 including Live After Death) albums from the Dickinson/Harris/Murray/Smith/McBrain lineup, and my God is it a good one.

Once again, basically every song is a highlight, with singles "Flight of Icarus" and "The Trooper" leading the show, and with the epic album closer "To Tame a Land" (based on the Sci-Fi book Dune, and I believe is one of Maiden's most underrated songs) ending the album on an awesome note. This is also the 1st Maiden album where singer Bruce Dickinson writes something on his own. "Revelations", Dickinson's 1st masterpiece, is a fantastic heavy-to-soft song which greatly helps the flow of the album.

Maiden are in full gallop here. They would continue to gallop on through the rest of the 80's after this one.

Stick around, people, the next one is even better...

This Is The Band's Best Release.......2007-04-15

Every one who was into Metal when this came out played this into uselessness. Remember, this was before CD's existed. The band STILL plays 3 cuts off of this when they tour. Where Eagles Dare, Flight of Icarus, Die With Your Boots On and Trooper are all classics. This, along with Ozzy's "Diary Of A Madman" and Judas Priest's "Screaming For Vengeance" altered the musical landscape. It's an important piece of history.

Drift consciously into sleep without realizing it........2007-06-27

Liquid Mind music is truly universal. And while I may not be able to name which album a certain piece comes from; the music on each CD seems to encourage the feeling or state of mind named in the title. This album, Sleep, does help me drift of to sleep. The other albums, likewise, support Meditation, lifting of the Spirit, and other states of mind. Perhaps they are inter-changeable; in any event, this album's selections help me relax and prepare for sleep.

Perfect for napping.......2007-05-18

Some new age music albums get it; some don't. I do not buy new age music to hear third rate melodies (that quickly become annoying), annoying beats and clicks, drumming, chanting, etc. I buy it to help me relax and chill out. Sometimes I use it to filter out noise from outside my home or in my office. Sometimes I use it to help me sleep. Good sleep music should lull - it shouldn't demand attention. It should draw you in enough so that you will stop fretting about your problems at work or at home but not so much that your mind is anticipating a predictable melodic pattern. Liquid Mind has figured out how to do what new age music should do. This album has gently changing tones that ease in and out, cascade, and encircle the listener. Think of it as pleasant white noise. This is definitely sleep inducing. If you feel like youa re sleep deprived but are too wired to nap, put this on your headphones and just listen. You won't be able to focus on any sound in particular - there is enough shifting to keep you from doing that. But you will find yourself being lulled into dreamland. Very good.

Really helps put me to sleep.......2007-05-07

I have no trouble staying asleep, but for years I've struggled to fall asleep. I've used several relaxing CDs, some commercial and some I've put together myself. Most of them helped, but eventually they had less effect, so I changed to another one for a few months. I started using Liquid Mind VIII recently, and it has easily been the most effective sleep CD I've used. Most nights I'm asleep by the fourth or fifth track (15-20 minutes, which is very good for me).

Other than the obvious fact that the music is fairly nondescript and very soothing, I don't know why it works so well, but it does.

Highly recommended if you have problems falling asleep.

I happened to hear this on XM Radio in the car. Oh my goodness. This is not the thing to be listening to while driving. I happened to have on the Vision (New Age music) channel and this came on in broad noon daylight as I was running some errands. Within minutes, I was as calm as a lake on a windless day and heading for nod-off time. Change the channel..but quick, make a note of the album.

I tried it (safely) at home. It has a warning; do not operate machinery or drive while listening to this cd. It does really work. I put it in the cd player in my alarm clock and put it on low before I went to bed. I think I fell asleep in 4 minutes.

The trick is the slow tempo. The music is almost complete phrases, no discernable tune but also not simply noises that sound spacey.

If you want something effective to calm yourself during yoga, to sleep to or to calm a fussy baby or put down the toddlers, this is it. Zzzzzz
