Imagine how startling it must be for Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes to realize that the older sector of once devoted, poster-kissing Duranies have aged enough to be soccer moms. The last two remaining members of the '80s superband hit and often missed throughout the '90s, but with Pop Trash, grown-up fans will find a reinvigorating pop album that strikes a nearly perfect balance between hip factor and maturity. The band backpedals from the overtaxing techno of the 1997 sleeper release Medazzaland, but retains a few well-chosen synth overlays and combines them successfully with the oceanic balladry from 1993's The Wedding Album. "Someone Else Not Me" and "Pop Trash Movie" reclaim the beautiful soundscapes of The Wedding Album's "Ordinary World," while the heavier tracks work diet industrial ("Mars Meets Venus") and heavy-metal riffs with weird time signatures ("Last Day on Earth") into proper Duran Duran bombast. There are moments when the band overruns the age-appropriate mark: "Lady Xanax," an ode to the anxiety-relieving medication, symbolizes a tempering of their fast and furious lifestyle, but then again, who has time for street drugs when you have to get the kids home in time for dinner? --Beth Massa

5 out of 5 stars Very overlooked, but brilliant!.......2006-07-29

Hot of the heels of their dark, introspective, 1997 album MEDAZZALAND, Duran Duran released POP TRASH. Most songs were written by Nick and Warren, not Simon, so its a little different. "Someone Else, Not Me" is the band's best ballad since "Ordinary World." "Mars Meets Venus" is an interesting electronic song. The highlight of the album is definately the hard-hitting "Last Day on Earth." Warren Cuccurullo proves he can play guitar that makes you want to dance, but also be a headbanger. Love this album, you must purchase it.

4 out of 5 stars Evidence that Duran Duran stayed consistent.......2006-04-28

all through the nineties and into the present decade. Somebody else not me is a gorgeous ballad, if some current Mtv band had done it then the critics would be swooning all over it. Sun doesn't shine forever is another ballad almost equally good. Lava lamp is a fun song that could have been written in their early days (not that it sounds 80's). But the highlight is Starting to remember, it's simply one of the best songs of this decade. It sounds alot like something Neil Young would have written. It's also nice how they use the short musical interludes between songs like they did on Big Thing, another great album. Hallucinating Elvis (original album title) is a stomping rocker about someone who thinks they're turning into Elvis. Last Day on Earth is the most hard rocking thing they've ever done, damn it's really good! Pop Trash movie, Lady Xanax & Mars meets Venus are all good too, and overall its a great album. A raised middle finger to the critics who've bashed Duran Duran for years.

4 out of 5 stars Trashy Pop Masterpiece, or Arcadia, Part 3.......2006-02-16

If your pining for "Rio, the Sequel", keep looking, that may be what the "Haters" are carping about. This is a fine cd, but think of it as a continuation of the experimentation that began on Arcadia back in 1985, with the crunchy guitar input of Warren Curcullio. I thought this is damn fine output for a group that has been churning out product for over 20 years...it is far better than about 98% of what passes for Pop Music now. Curcullio is really allowed to shine on this CD, his guitar stylings range from metallic to languid. Nick Rhodes as the keyboardist is much more subdued on this record, while he's definitely there, his keyboard effects are much less pronounced than on "Medazzaland" or thier earlier work. Standout Cuts for me were the ballad-ish "Someone Else Not Me", and "Lava Lamp" which has a psychadelic/metallic feel and "Playing with Uranium" sounds the most like a classic DuranDuran song. I enjoyed "Lady Xanax" for it's Zepplin nods and "Mars meets Venus" for its clever lyrics and weird structure (it's seems to be about the online personals). On the song "Pop Trash Movie", some one in an earlier post said that it was originally a Blondie song that didn't make it onto an album for whatever reason, I don't know if that is true, but you can hear Deborah Harry singing it if you allow yourself, it sorta sounds like one of their songs. If you like challenging Pop music this is a great place to find it.

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE!!!!!.......2005-10-12

OMG, you gotta be kidding me with this! What a disappointment! Not even OK...just HORRIBLE! The worst DD album ever. 1 star was the lowest score...it should be no stars.

4 out of 5 stars Truth or Trash?.......2005-07-28

For fans, waiting for a new album is a nerve twister. Delays again in getting an album out. On "Medazzaland" it was J.T.'s sudden departure which led to song re-writes, this time it was finding a record label after Capitol ended their relationship. As always though, it was worth the wait. POP TRASH is true to the Duran Duran sound and celluloid dream. Track 1 SOMEONE ELSE NOT ME- powerful in delivery and performance. Love the lyrics. #2 LAVA LAMP- Really, I could picture a Scooby-Doo chase scene with this song being played in the background. Makes you wanna do the bump! #3 PLAYING WITH URANIUM- The feeling of impending doom in this song is offset with great lyrics and the best rock sound the guys have delivered since "Too Much Information". #4 HALLUCINATING ELVIS- Yes, picture yourself at a show in Las Vegas, this song is too clever. Warren's having fun in this tune. #5 STARTING TO REMEMBER- simple and true, Simon is at his best here. #6 POP TRASH MOVIE- Nick wrote this for Blondie, but Simon heard it and had to perform it. A true musical moment. #7 FRAGMENT- just a little reminder of the song ditty's like Interlude 1. #8 MARS MEETS VENUS- a glimpse into the future with this tune. With a rap like delivery, the beat is way cool. #9 LADY XANAX- I really felt the Led Zepplin influence in this song. Inspiring ballad if you can call it that. #10 THE SUN DOESN'T SHINE FOREVER- Another true simple song, Simon's singing his heart out. #11 KISS GOODBYE- sounds like a piece or prelude to #12 LAST DAY ON EARTH- Jamming out, the guys really make you ponder what would you do if you knew this was your last day on Earth. #13 Track 1 in spanish. The first time a song of the bands was done in Spanish. Good job Simon! All in all the truth is revealed. Down to 3 members, the heart of the band is forever as is the celluloid dream. Another must for Duran Duran music lovers.

This is absolutely terrible. Bad production. Awful awful awful!! They actually re-recorded "Ready To Strike" and butchered it. Stick with the first 2 albums - "Ready To Strike" and "Thrill Of A Lifetime". Even "King Kobra III" if you can find it. I wonder if they even listened to this before it was released? Any of them. The band? The record company? I was very disappointed to say the least.
