F**king Amazing.......2005-03-27
Count myself lucky that I just bought this at Silver Platters today. It's out of print, but I was able to get it for 13 bucks! I didn't waste a buck. The best tracks are "If She Could Speak", "Dallass Drake"...every track kicks ass. If you like alternative metal OR hardcore (Vision Of Disorder), you will definitely love this. The legacy of Will Haven lives on!
WHVN.......2005-02-22
It was a sad day when i heard that Will Haven had broken up. It was about 2 years ago now, but it's still somewhat sad. Because who knows where they could have gone after Carpe Diem. That was a solid record, if a tiny bit repetitive. Still, it has such heavy songs as Carpe Diem, Dressed in Night Clothes and Dolph Lundgren, for example. For whatever reason, the band have broken up now (The remaining members, all but the vocalist, have since formed a new band called GhostRide with the singer from Far) ..But they have left behind something very hard to live up to. Especially in the Hardcore/Metal genre. No other band in that genre i've heard, has really outplayed Will Haven, for sheer heaviness and aggression.
This album WHVN, is probably the greatest out of the 3 Will Haven albums out there. Songs like Fresno, If She Could Speak, Jaworski, Slopez, End Summary, Genesis 11 and Dallass Drake are groundbreaking still, i believe, for the Hardcore/Metal genre. At the very least, since breaking up, Will Haven can look back with pride on what they have accomplished. Especially with this album.
The album has sort of a "running theme" of Static in between, and at the start of some songs. It's a different type of idea to incorporate, and for them it was kind of risky..As some people might be put off by it. But it works well with the entire album. It definitely gives it it's own personality. Hearing Grady's scream, under the static to the opening of the album, with Fresno..Is a great way to open an album.
I believe everyone who says they are a fan of Hardcore/Metal should at least own this, or any Will Haven album. Will Haven will be remembered as a heavy band, that was pure in it's aggression. Also try out their DvD "Foreign Films" which shows a 1 hour documentary on the band, and a full Live concert.
Will Haven simply destroys every other Hardcore/Metal band out there.
Great CD, great band.......2002-05-06
Nice combination of ambient static sounds and hardcore metal. In comparison to El Diablo, the album as a whole isn't as good, but the songs themselves have more distinct personalities. You've got the ultra-intense "Jaworski," the epics "Slopez" and "Migual Abburido," and the more accessable songs "Fresno" and "If She Could Speak." In addition, there's the strange remix of "I've Seen My Fate" and "Sign Off," a bizzare track involving two minutes of radio static and a bad recording of a high school marching band playing "The Star Spangled Banner." Oh yeah, and the songs that I didn't mention are great as well. If you like the Deftones, Far, Neurosis, or even The Dillinger Escape Plan, you will love this CD. It may take a while to grow on you, but once it does, you'll never want to stop listening to it.
God, Will Haven is awesome!
Not emo..........2001-05-01
...but still a good CD. The songs sound like a combination of Neurosis, Slipknot, and really heavy Deftones with static interspersed throughout. The music is both heavy and soothing at the same time, and takes a few listens to sink in. The only problem is that there's no singing on the whole CD, so there's no real emotion. If you like metal, you must get this CD.
Lock Your Doors, Get a Gun, Protect Yourself!.......2000-10-21
Everybody lock your doors, get a gun, protect yourself! Mr. Will Haven is planning to lower scholastic standards! Before I begin, let me point out that his reprehensible invectives are a shout to the world that, as soon as our backs are turned, he will have more impact on Earth's biological, geological, and chemical systems during our lifetime and our children's than all preceding human generations had together. Of that I am certain, because his ability to capitalize on the economic chaos, racial tensions, and social discontent of the current historical moment can be explained, in large part, by the following. Let me recap that for you, because it really is extraordinarily important: I challenge him to point out any text in this review that proposes that those who disagree with him should be cast into the outer darkness, should be shunned, should starve. It isn't there. There's neither a hint nor a suggestion of such a thing. I'm inclined to think that if Fate desired that "WHVN" make a correct application of what he had read about demagogism, it would have to indicate title and page number, since the out-of-touch parasitic fool would otherwise never in all his life find the correct place. But since Fate does not do this, Mr. Haven's dream is to rule the world, or failing that, annihilate it. (Actually, I invite you to talk to Mr. Haven yourself if you feel that I'm misrepresenting his position, but that's not important now.) Because of his eagerness to participate in riots, "WHVN" coins polysyllabic neologisms to make his cop-outs sound like they're actually important. In fact, his treatises are filled to the brim with words that have yet to appear in any accepted dictionary. He argues that I am snotty for wanting to help others to see through the empty and meaningless statements uttered by him and his secret agents. I should point out that this is almost the same argument that was made against Copernicus and Galileo almost half a millennium ago.
Given what I know about snivelling soporific litterbugs, I can say with confidence that I have to wonder where Mr. Haven got the idea that it is my view that his magic-bullet explanations are a breath of fresh air amid our modern culture's toxic cloud of chaos. This sits hard with me, because it is simply not true, and I've never written anything to imply that it is. To simplify, we should reach out for things with permanence, things beyond wealth and comfort and pleasure, things that have real meaning. (Goodness knows, our elected officials aren't going to.) Armed only with a white shirt, pocket protector, slide rule, thick glasses, and some other neat stuff, I have determined that someone has been giving Mr. Haven's brain a very thorough washing, and now "WHVN" is trying to do the same to us. My goal for this review was to turn Mr. Will Haven's predatory teachings to our advantage. Know that I have done my best while trying always to reverse the devolutionary course he has set for us. Let an honest history judge.
