1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

This collection of 26 songs and instrumentals highlights the virtuosity and splendid variety of 12 Folkways albums recorded by the original group (John Cohen, Tom Paley, and Mike Seeger). Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Start here, and get all the rambler's records.......2002-08-20

This is a compilation of the New Lost City Ramblers after Tom Paley Left. I confess I am old enough to be used to feeling the world was divided between people who felt that the NLCR was no good after Paley left and those who were willing to accept New Commer Tracy Schwartz who probably going to take the NLCR out of Western Swing and into Rock and Roll or some other forms of modern foolishness. I wonder if there would have been such squacking if the Ramblers had obtain the services of the man they wanted to replace Paley with, Doc Watson!!!

I remember going down to a record store off Dupont Circle in DC on one afternoon in 1965 when I picked up the first post Paley Album "Gone to the Country." Boy were those bluegrass numbers, the Stanley's I'm just a Rovin' Rambler and Little Glass of Wine. But it wasn't just up tempo, on that CD was the marvelous, obvious medieval, and mysterious "Little Carpenter" and Mike Seeger's superb banjo picking on his friend Dock Bogg's tune "Down South Blues." And who can forget their swinging Wild and Western Hobo.

The Ramblers were off. I think they were more adventurous in the years coming. A few tunes that were Western Swing and several early bluegrass tunes, and some things like Seargeant John Q that were taken out of the electric Nashville Country Music. And Tracy who was a much better fiddler than Mike Seeger and who has become a great fiddler (and now even Tom Paley has become a great fiddler and one of the leading experts on old time fiddle, just today I was passing around the Net his last intervention on Fiddle-l) and took the band into Cajun music and backward into unaccompanied music, or great model accappella and banjo music.

So much variety. So much joy, so much dedication to the traditions, to the sounds that came from back porches, and parlors,. barbeques and barn raising, and yes stages in Movie Theaters, school houses and even that awful Ryman auditorium.

Today a lot of people who think they know something about old time music have forgotten that the Ramblers pretty much started it all. They present a much better survey of the music and the culture than do a lot of current bands that are more about cashing in on the contra dance industry than they are about reviving the music.

Get this, so you can get all the rest of their records, now availabe by order from Folkways.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Americana as it should be..........2000-06-18

Fans of the alt.country movement should go back to the roots to see where the folk-country scene came from. No one takes old-timey songs and updates them better than the New Lost City Ramblers did, unless you like the fun spin that the Holy Modal Rounders put on it. (Also VERY highly recommended, the newly compiled Holy Modal Rounders 1 and 2 on one CD.) Classic old-timey music fills this 70-minute collection of tunes culled from early New Lost City Ramblers albums. If you like a good smile, check out No Sales Tax on the Women. Any Deadheads out there will like Don't Let This Deal Go Down, which the Grateful Dead morphed into Deal. The digital audio restoration quality is top-notch and this collection is essential to anyone whose interests lie in folk or alt.country, or Americana as it's now being called. There's not a weak link on this collection, which captures everything from traditional ballads to Piedmont blues and everything in between. If you're like me, this collection will enchant you so much that you'll buy its sequel, "Out Standing in the Field," which culls music from 1962 to the mid-60s. Five stars, only because I can't give it more...

5 out of 5 stars Great Old Time Music!.......1999-12-01

The New Lost City Ramblers have done an amazing job in recording their versions of classic old time music. They have a reverent respect for these old tunes but have certainly put their stamp on the styles and methods in which the songs have been played. If you've never owned any music from TNLCR, then this is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Stuff Version.......2006-10-17

Hey Donna Summer fans, this is the only place that you can find this extended version of Donna Summer Hot Stuff. Its the single version but she ad libs more at the end, its about a minute more and i have never found this version on any Donna Summer compilation. I dont know why this version isnt on any of her cds, but its truly cool with a different ending.

4 out of 5 stars Chic and Chic-influenced music, plus some other stuff.......2005-04-07

Of all of the CD's Rhino issued in "The Disco Years" series, this is the only one that has an underlying theme. The majority of the songs are either by Chic, produced by Chic, or were heavily influenced by Chic. Here is a track by track review:

1. Good Times by Chic: Their last big hit, went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. A timeless classic.

2. High Society by Norma Jean: Former Chic vocalist. I am not sure why she left the group to go solo, but the question is, why did she bother? She certainly did not achieve any success as a solo artist and the songs were still written and produced by Chic. The song is great, but it is for all intents purposes a Chic song.

3. He's the Greatest Dancer by Sister Sledge: "We are Family" may have been a bigger hit, but to me this Chic-produced recording is the Sledge's best song ever. Another classic from 1979.

4. Spacer by Sheila & B. Devotion: Another song produced by Chic, but totally forgettable. Chic produced other, much better songs than this one that could have been included here.

5. I'm Coming Out by Diana Ross: From the marvelous Chic-produced "Diana" album. This was easily Diana Ross' best album and this track was one of her best songs.

6. I Like Love by Norma Jean: Another Norma Jean solo recording that is undistinguishable from her work with Chic. Another good song, but I think possibly the reason why Chic as a group started to falter after 1979 is that they started to spread themselves too thin. I mean, aside from their own records, they were working with Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, Norma Jean, etc.

7. I Love You More by Rene and Angela: Not produced by Chic, but decidedly influenced by Chic. A good song, even if it does seem like a bit of a rip-off.

8. Keep it Comin' Love by KC and the Sunshine Band: This song was a hit before Chic became popular, so you can't accuse them of stealing that guitar riff from Chic. Hmmm, maybe Chic stole from them? A great song that I remember having on a vinyl 45 back in 1977 when I was 9 years old.

9. Fresh by Kool and the Gang: Why oh why is this god-awful song here?! It was released way after the disco era (1985), it is certainly not a disco song, and it is quite likely Kool & the Gang's 2nd worse song ever behind "Cherish".

10. In the Bush by Musique: A very sexually risque song. Now, there was good sexual-inuendo disco music ("Love to Love You Baby" is the perfect example), but this song is just embarassing and it was music like this that sped up the death of disco.

11. I'm Caught Up (In a One Night Love Affair) by Inner Life: A good, if somewhat forgettable song.

12. A Lover's Holiday by Change: The Chic influences are quite apparent on this disco classic.

Tracks 13, 14 & 15 were released after the official disco era, they are technically not disco songs, they are categorically early 80's dance/techno tunes, they are not particularly good songs, and Rhino should be ashamed of themselves for including them on this CD.

16. Hot Stuff by Donna Summer: Rhino redeems themselves by including one of Donna's best songs. Even though she was dubbed the Queen of Disco, it is because of songs like this that Donna has survived and thrived after disco died.

17. Paradise by Change: Another great song by the dance/studio group Change, and once again heavily influenced by the Chic sound.

18. Lost in Music by Sister Sledge: This Chic production failed to have the same impact as "He's the Greatest Dancer" or "We are Family", but a great song nonetheless.

Buy this CD for the great Chic and Chic influenced music, but skip over the other tracks that are a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars The best single collection of disco out there........2003-11-08

There's no other way to put it: this collection is a must for anyone who loves disco. The first six tracks are absolutely essential. French idol Sheila's Chic-produced hit "Spacer" is very hard to find, and is among the greatest of disco songs ever made. It has been sampled in Alcazar's 2001 hit "Crying At the Discotheque." Diana Ross' Chic-produced "I'm Coming Out" is another 1980 song that ranks in top disco essentials. "I Like Love" is classic Chic work--produced for former member Norma Jean. Change tracks are another bonus. Get this CD!

4 out of 5 stars lost in classics.......2003-01-04

i really liked the selections of songs but i was dissapointed with the length of the songs, there all the edited versions, for a compilation like this with hard to find songs they should put the long versions it bought back some good memories but again i felt a little empty with the short versions here.

4 out of 5 stars Club Classics.......2002-05-02

If you want a collection of radio hits, this disc will disappoint you, with a few exceptions. However, if you want a collection of cuts that the DEEJAYS played in the clubs, this is a great series. Yes many of these will be unfamiliar to you unless you were there, but I guarantee you they sound great with your amp cranked to '11' and 50 to 100 people all up on their feet dancing. If you missed that era and want to know what it was like I recommend this CD and some of the others in the series. This may not have been mixed by a deejay, but a deejay definitely provided the list.

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06

It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.

Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.

Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."

Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09

I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26

Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.

There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.

5 out of 5 stars How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19

My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.

5 out of 5 stars Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28

The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.
