A return to their former glory days, Snakes and Arrows shows this seminal prog rock band reclaiming some of the sonic territory that they'd lost over the past few years. RUSH Rocks!!!

My first DVD MVI.......2007-08-02

Up until Snakes & Arrows on DVD MVI my entire RUSH catologue was on vinyl. I like this format! I prefer the DVD-Audio format but it seems to have died (at least for rock & rollers). The surround mix on this disk is incredible. By incredible I don't mean psychedelic effects with dizzing sounds spinning all around you. By incredible I mean an ambience was created that makes you feel like the musicians are in the room with you. The video was very cool - My how my RUSH buddies have aged . . . as have I. I would rate the RUSH albums I have like this, 1. Moving Pictures 2. 2112 3. A Farewell to Kings 4. Snakes & Arrows 5. Signals - and then the rest. Hope this reveiw is of some help for you.

RIP RUSH.......2007-08-01

Very dissapointing. Production is good, songs are boring and lifeless. Rush's downward spiral continues. The last GREAT Rush album was 'Moving Pictures', the last GOOD rush album was 'Counterparts'. In all honestly, the downward spiral for rush began with the song "New World Man" on signals. I had high hopes for S&A based on the hype and the tease opening seconds of "Far Cry" from their website.....wow! could be like Hemispheres. Unfortunately, it was not to be. These guys just can't write good songs anymore and Geddy's vocals are really starting to falter. How can these be the same guys that wrote 'Natural Science', 'Tom Sawyer', or 'The Trees'?

Amazing album .......2007-08-01

This is another great Rush release. It sounds better every time I listen to it. Great performances, lyrics and production. It contains an amazing song called "The Larger Bowl" that should be a huge radio hit. It has a darker feel on some songs mixing acoustic and heavy electric sounds. You don't have to be a musician to appreciate their musicianship and songwriting. Just buy it and check out their live show too.

A satisfying peek inside the recording life of Rush.......2007-07-30

Since I'd already bought the album, I made this purchase solely for the DVD - and it was worth every cent. I'm a new Rush fan - Snakes & Arrows was my first album & first concert - and I'm hooked. This DVD was a deeply satisfying and inspiring peek into the recording style, habits, relationships, and philosophies that make Rush who and what they are. A must!

Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26

Music score was great. Paul McCartney and Wings. Movie well fitted for Roger Moore, a great candidate for this role.
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.

Finally! The complete Live and Let Die Soundtrack.......2005-09-13

I have only been waiting for this for 22 years! Granted when this was first released on LP (Vinyl record technology, pre cd, pre cassette and during the horror period of 8 track tapes!),
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.

The remastered release of LIVE AND LET DIE is much improved. The previous issue was no different than the track line up on the original 1973 vinyl record -- or eight track tape, depending on your antiquated stereo. Not only does this release include additional superb tracks, some of the original cuts have also been lengthened and more closely correspond the the film soundtrack. George Martin, the Beatles producer, took the helm from John Barry in scoring the eighth James Bond film soundtrack. Though no one has yet equaled Barry's compositions for Bond films, which we have not heard since 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, Martin's soundtrack was perfect for launching Roger Moore's first outing as Bond. Let us not forget Paul McCartney's brilliant theme of the same name.

The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.

There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.

Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.

Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16

Yes, that is my sentiment....in fact, it seems in all the other re-mastered Bond soundtracks, the best music is left out, and Live and Let Die was no exception.

George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....

Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.

Once in a while, the Hollywood marketing machine is made redundant by the viral campaign that develops, seemingly on its own, around a movie. In 2006, such a web phenom surrounded Snakes on a Plane months before its summer release. The movie was cool before it even opened, and that status is reflected on the kind of musicians on its soundtrack. For starters, it's co-released by Decaydance, the label run by Fall Out Boy's bassist Pete Wentz; this isn't a coincidence, as most of the bands involved belong to the same musical universe, including several with a connection to former FOB label Fueled by Ramen (The Academy Is…, Panic! At the Disco, Gym Class Heroes, the Hush Sound). The vibe is happy-go-lucky and exuberant, a feeling bolstered by the fact that while most of the songs aren't original, they've been remixed for extra-oomph by the likes of Tommie Sunshine and Teddybears. This album is one of the best albums i've ever listened to & that says a lot since i've got a crap load of soundtracks. Every track is sometype of club mix & sounds excelent, sometimes even better then the original song itself. This cd is a must have!

Snakes On A Plane is going to be coming with something else????.......2007-02-11

I love this soundtrack, the unclean version though. It has a bunch of catchy tunes. I wonder if the sound quality of the first track is suppose to be with less bass and solid sound? The song sounds undermixed all Teh Teh and not boom boom. Pick this cd up you can't go wrong it is a companion album to go with the movie if you love the film itself?

There is only a few songs on the cd that's in the movie though, like the first song. The song by Gym Class Heroes and Cee Lo Green and the last 3 songs. The reason that I said that Snakes On A Plane is going to be coming with something else is that I just found out from an email from Varese Sarabande concerning the image mistake on their Nanny McPhee front and back cover art is that...well find out below for yourself the copy and paste info from my email under the February 27th relase date:

Fun Movie Soundtrack for a Fun Movie.......2006-11-06

For a movie like Snakes on a Plane, you'd expect the soundtrack to be just as goofy. The lead track, "Snakes on a Plane (Come On, Bring It)," is a fun start to an enjoyable album.
Many of the tracks are remixes that weren't really in the movie, but are neat anyway.
Definitely recommended to anyone who likes pop-remixes, campy movies and fun music.

i was going through the other reviews for this cd and i found that most of them unhappy with this cd just cause its aint 94 (its aint danzig4) the 1st thing that i want to ask here, Do you want another danzig4? i dont, what im lookin for is a cd that will rock hard a cd that i wont feel that iv wasted my cash on. danzig had changed with age thats why his vocals are aint the same and the styles that his invinting are differ then the style that he sing in on danzig2 .. this is a cool cd that has its weaknesses in few parts specially some of the guitar work, the days that JC had rocked the world are gone, unfortunatly that even JC solo cd was an ok but not a killer. my advice is buy this cd and judge for your self if its worth the price. or wait for a special priced cd :)

a great album.......2007-02-24

This album is a great piece of work. The first gothic riffs of 'Wotan's Procession' gets you in the mood. 'Skincarver' comes charging out of the gate like a horse who wanted to get to the finish line yesterday. The title track is heavy and wonderful and the guitars sound incredible here. They have been at least double tracked (or tripled tracked). They are huge.

'1000 Devils Reign' has some great lyrics that recalls images of The Rebel Angels from John Milton's Paradise Lost. At least that's what i think of when I hear the 'floods of feathers fly' line. 'Skull Forrest is a quiet little song that was based on a dream Danzig had. The rhyming pattern and almost robotic structured drums are great for this song. This is one of my favorites. Hellmask is a heavy three minute song that wakes you back up again.

'When We Were Dead' and 'Night, Besodom' are the only two weak songs here. And even they are still good! And as he did on the I Luciferi album there are three great ending tracks here: 'My Darkness', 'Netherbound' and 'Black Angel, White Angel'

And as I've said in numerous other Danzig reviews, the sequence of these songs is perfect. But I always though this album was a bit short.(Only 42 minutes). Another 3 songs would have really filled this album out nicely. Some of those songs will be released on the upcoming Lost Tracks of Danzig CD. This should see release sometime in April or May of 2007. And if you like Danzig at all you will pick it up immediately, along with this album.

5 stars for this one. His voice is a bit worse for wear on this one (as it has been for the last 7 or 8 years) but the powerful guitars and drums make up for this. Buy this now and give it a listen.

solid album.......2007-01-12

i think this is a great album...i especially like skincarver. the beats are sick but yes, unfortunetely glenn's voice isnt what it used to be and the focus here is music more than vocals. the album still delivers the dark themes of his previous works so if you are a die-hard danzig fan like i am grab this asap it will not dissappoint.

Danzigs best since 4.......2006-06-26

Danzig has been a little..... off...... since Blackacidevil. Granted Danzig 6 and beyond were solid efforts. But Circle Of Snakes is his best effort in a looooong time. I credit it to the arival of one of my favorite axe men in Tommy Victor. Tommy's band Prong broke new ground in the early 90's, and was one of my favorites (Beg to Differ was a classic album). Tommy melds Prong-style riffs with the classic Danig sound pioneered by John Christ. The result is a great album.

Danzig is back.

In a few words, This album is great. Among his best. On Satan's Child he tried the Rob Zombie thing and it failed. This time he mixes his guitar style with Igor Cavalera-style drumming. WAY BETTER. Give it a shot.

Oxeneers.......2005-12-06

Simply put, "Oxeneers" and "This is Meant to Hurt You", TAAS's previous EP, are epic. Both CD's possess a charged sound that stands apart from the clichéd hard-metal-mathcore garbage that has reared its head via Myspace's unwelcome infestation of a once-sacred music scene. These arms are snakes have a musical presence (both live and recorded) that proves both refreshing and overwhelming. These Arms Are Snakes is leagues above anything that Botch ever dreamed up: layered and simple, poetic and depraved + driving and jaded. It's my favorite as of now.

High expectations, low yields.......2005-10-23

I was expecting so much from this band after their EP came out, and I couldn't wait for the full length to follow it up. With intensity and fury to match The Icarus Line's Mono, and the sort of complexity that only ex-members of Botch can provide, I was sure this band was going places.

I guess I should have been tipped off by their lackluster live show. Singer Steve Snere (what a perfect rock star name) looked bored. I think I was more into it than him. Plus, I realized they were only a three piece -- the interesting dual guitar interplay from This is Meant to Hurt You had either been the product of overdubs, or they'd lost a member.

Either way, it's a big loss to the band. As a 3 piece they just can't provide a full enough sound.

And they seem bored. Or lazy, or something. There were a couple songs in Oxeneers where TAAS were able to blow me away, like they used to. The rest of the album, though, is trash. The band is content with going on for minutes at a time with a two-bar guitar or keyboard riff over a simple drum beat, and Snere chanting his whatever.

This happens a lot. It's not intense, it's not complex. It's not what I loved in the EP.

It's hard to describe in words what Oxeneers does for me musically. I don't think I've heard a band with so much raw energy since At The Drive In. The songs sound like a mix between Fugazi and the Rapture. A definate must buy for any indie fan. This got me over the dissapointment I suffered through after I bought the new Mars Volta cd.

This CD, like a previous review definately is flying under peoples radars. It's extremely sad because this album is now within my Top 5. I honestly cannot find one thing that I do not like about this band and/or album. It's a rough cross between At the Drive In, Rage against the Machine, Les Savy Fav and Rival Skools, in my opinion. I'm not going into some detailed and heavily oriented review on this one. It's a must buy-- nuff said.

I was totally suprised when I listened to this cd. I really like there other ones but this has so much more depth its unreal. Definitely in the constant rotation for the last month. These guys are great at creating their own direction.

these arms are snakes are without a doubt my favorite rock (just to keep things simple let's just say rock) band in America right now. Easter outdoes the first two albums in a big way, and I liked Oxeneers a lot. their music is unbelievable, you have to really pay attention to these guys or you miss a lot.
I was lucky enough to see them in Columbia, SC about 2 months ago at a club where not more than 40-50 people were (because people there are apparently idiots, i drove 2 hours just for the show) and they absolutely killed. it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, America needs to hear this band...they are the cure for every mainstream, dry, disposable band (i agree with the previous reviewer about the "these arms are 'disco'") that i can think of. please please support these guys, they know exactly what they are doing.

Rising from the ashes of noisy math-rockers Botch and emo upstarts Kill Sadie, Seattle post-hardcore outfit These Arms Are Snakes has worked long and hard to reclaim both their identity and fan base. It hasn't been the easiest of processes; they've changed drummers more than a handful of times and their first album, while full of energy and vitality, was a shambling mess. But what Easter, their second full-length, reveals is that all this hard work hasn't gone to waste.

Easter is an ambitious record, packed tight with energy, aggression and a healthy dose of schizophrenia. Like a Kaiju movie klaxon warning of impending calamity, TAAS howls and screeches with equal parts excitement and foreboding. Steve Snere's surly snarl is in full effect, pouring out his stream of consciousness and boy howdy is it angry. Ryan Fredriksen's guitar screeches through dissonant licks and churns out heavy sludge with ease. The band is tighter than ever before, and it shows.

However, the album isn't without its flaws. The sequence of songs on the album is particularly dreadful. The first three tracks roar with unparalleled rage, building up the tension in an almost unbearable torrent of filth and fury. But the fourth track, "Desert Ghost," is a drum and piano number which is hauntingly melodic, but incredibly out of place. Everyone knows that track four is like the money shot of the album. You can't waste it with a slow burner like that. The poor sequencing breaks up the momentum and halts the album dead in its tracks.

These Arms Are Snakes are like aspiring cooks, working the kinks out of their recipe for hard-edged, cerebral punk rock. Their first EPs were like appetizers, spicy and palatable, but lacking in depth. Their debut was an explosive, but ultimately under-seasoned dish that was hard to swallow. Easter is an ambitious stew of ideas, styles and sounds. It is a fearless experiment that is complex in flavor but somewhat disproportioned and off-balanced. Who knows what the next album (and maybe some lineup solidifying) will bring?

Instant gratification. Constantly, people in this country are always trying to find the best ways for instant gratification. Perhaps, this is why our radio stations are filled with mindless pop that chewed up and spit out only to be forgotten. Thankfully, there are still albums like Easter and bands like These Arms Are Snakes. Here is an album that demands you give it a little breathing time like a fine wine. These Arms are Snakes show why patience is considered a virtue.

The first thing you'll notice listening to this entire album is that it doesn't have the catchy song structure of their previous album, Oxeneers or The Lion Sleeps... While Oxeneers showed a band that write catchy songs without comprising intregity, Easter shows a more technical and more balanced side of the band. The band displays an atmospheric feel without taking the whole Isis or Pelican route. Because of this, I would say that the album flows incredibly well.

Sound wise, These Arms are Snakes are the definition of post-hardcore. From the crunchy album opener, Mescaline Eyes, to the audible insanity of Crazy Woman Dirty Train, this band shifts every which way while maintaining a sound all their own. Always a strong suit, the album's production is top notch with everything heard in complete clarity. That credit can go to the band's drummer, Chris Common. The band's intention for Easter was clearly made for a live presence because I must say that I had distinct pleasure to witness this band play most of this album live. The band's energy level mixed with their music just go hand and hand, feeding off each other.

Overall, Easter is much like the holiday, full of vivid textures and emotions. I have always seen TAAS as what At The Drive In would sound like if they experimented (which is a compliment in the highest fashion). I am already curious to see in which direction the band heads next. I totally recommend this for anyone that is a fan of At The Drive In or Bear vs. Shark. My advice is to follow the lyrics to Horse Girl and "Treat like a push pin, push it till' it gets in".

do you ever get bored of what's goin on in music these days? then you search and find a band that restores your faith and hope in music? that was totally the case when i found "oxeneers" about a year ago. listening to that record made me feel excited again about music and gave me hope that their are still some talented/credible bands out there still in a world where cliches are drowning out the airwaves and even the underground. when i heard that record along with their ep later, i thought to myself "what is this? i have never heard anything like this before."

this is the second full length from these arms are snakes and it's a great progression for the band. if you were a fan of "oxeneers" or their ep "this is meant to hurt you" you're guaranteed to like this one as well. it sounds a little post hardcore like "this is meant...", a little electronica and progressive like "oxeneers", as well as mixing in a new fresh sound which i would say is more experimental and even a little classic rock sound.

bottomline, these arms are snakes fans are going to love this album while if you're new to the band, "easter" wouldn't be a bad album to start off either. it's just as good, and perhaps better than their previous releases. all their albums thus far are epic and no one else is making this kind of music these days. very original and fresh. if you're unsure about buying the album, download "mescaline eyes", "horse girl", and "child chicken play". that should be all the convincing you need. i highly recommend this album to anyone.

The greatest band ever.

In an ideal world, the Hot Snakes and the Exploding Hearts would be my generation's Beatles and Stones, or our Nirvana and Pearl Jam, or our Pistols and Clash, or our Elvis and Jerry Lee. Or anyway, something really important.

Should be required listening for any old-timers who think that rock and roll has not been glorious since Sun Records in the 50s or CBGBs in the 70s.

I can't believe no one has reviewed this album yet!! Grade A stuff. I fell in love with Hot Snakes around the time Suicide Invoice came out, and have since been on a mission to collect all of their tunes.
They are (were) in a genre of their own in my opinion.
The only track I could live without is "Rock And Roll Will Never Die", but it's sort of a goof or a skit of a track.
Buy. Listen. Love. Repeat.

If the Deadly Snakes ever come to your town, you better go. You owe it to them. I've often wondered how their 6 piece band, complete with horns are able to eat while touring given the small dives I've seen them in. It used to be, for me, that anything produced by Greg Cartwright drew my attention (still true, check out the second Horrors record on In The Red records), but while I came for Greg Cartwright, I STAYED for the Deadly Snakes. Dark and frantic, it's not garage and not quite soul either...the D. Snakes are hard to pin down for somebody and eventually you have to stop trying. To quote an old gospel song, they live the life they sing about in their songs. You owe it to them to pay to see them, you owe it to yourself to see one of the best live bands in the world right now.

Buy "I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore" and "Ode To Joy" and "Porcella" and "Love Undone". Buy the Reigning Sound CDs too. All those CDs are on In The Red Records and they all slay dragons and fatten frogs for deadly snakes.

Flat out album of the year thus far!!!!.......2003-04-22

Having bought and loved both of the first two albums by the Deadly Snakes, I rushed out to get this one the day of realease. I have to admit, however, that I had prepared myself to be a little let down - after all, how many bands get better as they continue? Well, I'm VERY pleased to say that's exactly what has happened with the Deadly Snakes - this is by FAR their best album to date. They've married their love of garage rock, soul, blues and gospel more perfectly here than any band since the Rolling Stones circa 1972. I would also go on to say that it would benefit any one exploring the current crop of new "garage rock" bands to pick this up right away - the likes of the D4, Datsuns, Von Bondies, ect don't hold a candle to this group.

John Reis never ceases to amaze me. Not only was he one of the guys behind Drive Like Jehu, but today he is involved in three amazing bands (Hot Snakes, Rocket from the Crypt, The Sultans). This guy, along with his brothers from the west coast know hot to rock.
This album is about rocking out, and is the best thing the Snakes have put out so far. It has all the fist shaking furry of rock music. Tracks like "Gar Forgets His Insulin" burn the air.
This album really didn't do anything amazing, but it sound like everything rock music should sound like. It's fast, angry, and scathing, truly a great album.

theres something in the water in san diego. too many good bands for so long have been just ripping up the norms of the rock scene and patchworking it together to make some of the most interesting, intense music on the scene today. quick rundown for you music geeks. it started with bands like DRIVE LIKE JEHU, SWING KIDS, THE LOCUST, HEROIN, and CLICKITAT IKATOWI. chaotic aggresive rock at its best. if youre reading this and dont know these bands, look em up. all have blistering guitar work, mathmatical drumming, and manical passionate vocals. then comes HEAVY VEGETBALE (rob crowe!), THREE MILE PILOT (ABSIV!) and ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT (ex drive like jehu) just more intense unique rock music, bordering on indie, more instrumentation. then BLACK HEART PROCESSION (clickitat + three mile pilot) PINBACK (the best ever! three mile and rob crowe) TRISTEZA (ex swing kids/ locust) and the incredibly beautiful simplicity of the ALBUM LEAF (also james from tristeza/ swing kids/ locust) now comes the HOT SNAKES. YES!!!! back to the days of old, the days of heroin and drive like jehu, but theres something more mature about this new project. HOT SNAKES is the drive like jehu guys doing what they shouldve kept doing. This IS rock music. its dirty, its dense, its introspective, and its angry. theres no heavy metal or chugga-chugga here. heroin and drive like jehus screechec vocals trake a backseat to a more monotonal singing style that some fans will be used to. the guitar interplay is great. dense weaving distorted guitars gallop in and out of thick meaty bass lines with the drum fills to match. While mildy abrasive at times, this is music to get you movin. punk fans rejoice!! youre punk music has been lacking something for years now. this is what its been lacking. strokes, hives, and liars, take note - this is the intensity, the rawness, the sexiness youve been searching for in your vain noodlings. this is rock music at its most stripped down and its sounds amazing. if the unusual guitar lines seem to confusing or chaotic, then just wait, i guarantee you will be thirsting for it after a few listens, and all your blink 182 and sum 41 records will just seem pale in comparison. for fans of this, please check out all the other groups listed above. san diego is making the best music in the country right now. and its not on MTV. do yourself a favor and just read some reviews for the above listed bands, and see if theres not something for you and for anyone else you know. i'd bet you money you'll be a fan, but this is the internet and im just talking to myself. Let's face it people, aggression and isolation are pretty commonplace within music today. It's become incredibly difficult to turn on the radio and not hear a hard rockin' band with angst ridden vocals. We have become so accustomed to this sound, that we don't really hear it anymore. In a lot of ways this is bad, but in some ways it's good. Because when something offbeat, brazen, electrifying and just plain good comes along we truly hear it. Sometimes it's the best thing in the world.
This is the case with Hot Snakes sophomore effort, `Suicide Invoice.' Don't get me wrong, Hot Snakes have a hard garage- rock type of sound, but they also have style. John Reis' guitar attacks through every song, giving it the heart and Rick Froberg's vocals howls though every word giving it soul. This is how rock `n' roll should be.
`Suicide Invoice' is more somber and moodier than their debut album, `Automatic Midnight.' Some may even say it's mellower. Tracks like, `Why does it hurt' are about damaged love and how it affects everyone involved. `Unlisted' is a kiss off to society in general, disguised as a pop song. Even the title track `Suicide Invoice' is slightly more vulnerable and melodic than past anthems. When Rick proclaims, ` When I dream, I keep my promises to you. I really do' it seems so exposed that you almost want to believe him.
There are several songs reminiscent of the bands raw, biting sound heard on `Automatic Midnight.' `Gar forgets his insulin' and `I hate the kids' have the rage filled, fist clenched tone that the band has become infamous for. `Who died' is a diatribe about how no one notices you're gone and how they're glad it wasn't them. Also, there are some charming tunes about the wonders of aerodynamics and the joy of paperwork. `Paperwork' is about how everyone has something to gain off paperwork except for you.
Hot snakes are a rock band in every sense of the word. They punch you in the stomach, then pick you up and dust you off for more. `Automatic Midnight' scratches the surface and shows what this band is capable of. On `Suicide Invoice' this band digs much deeper and shows they are more than awesome, booming guitar chords. Hot Snakes show a wide range of emotional grandstanding, everything from love, hate, to indifference. Rock bands of the world take note, there's more to the equation than aggression and isolation. Hot Snakes have seemed to discover the other variables and they aren't sharing.

This is not Duran Duran.......2003-08-25

Of all the screaming "guy rock" on the radio these days, there's not one who wouldn't be standing in a skinny tie and Flock Of Seagulls haircut, playing a Casio keyboard and looking bored in that all too familiar European manner, if this were say, 1981 (see: Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, other screamers, et al.) But Rick Froberg and Co. rest assured don't go with the flow. Simply put: They rock the house with the brute force...a force appropriate to their themes of alienation and frustration.

In my opinion, the album is too short and too restrained for what these guys are capable of doing--Hot Snakes delivers black themes without the loose ends of the similar Drive Like Jehu, and does it well, but many of those loose ends help to underscore the raw power of these artists. Whatever the case, I'm buying the next one the second it becomes available.

For the kids who find Blink 182 and other more slickly produced happy Cali product to be the definition of the term, I point them in the direction of this album for something that hits a lot closer to the bullseye. Fatalistic and hopeful, dirty yet crisp, noisy and smooth. As others have pointed out, there's a great interplay of guitars on this album that hold a lot more menace than most records can muster these days, the vocals somehow manage to be one-note yet never repetitive, and the rhythm section is damn tight. Highly recommended rock and roll.

Until his late-'90s comeback, Johnny Bush was known mainly as the writer of Willie Nelson's "Whiskey River." Though a mysterious vocal disorder in the early '70s interrupted his singing career, Bush has regained his voice and reclaimed his position as king of the honky-tonk barstool. This self-produced collection takes its title from one of Bush's cult classics of the '70s, as "Green Snakes (On the Ceiling)" has since become a Texas roadhouse anthem. The rest of the selection tends toward vintage material, with Bush sampling the songbooks of Floyd Tillman ("Driving Nails in My Coffin"), Harlan Howard ("I Wish I Could Fall in Love Today"), and Hank Locklin ("Glory Train."). The conjunto novelty of "Dos Tacos" and the retro swing of "Nobody's Business (But My Own)" fall comparatively flat, but when Bush applies his still-boyish tenor to ballads as strong as "The Next Voice You Hear" and "He Don't Deserve You Anymore," he shows why he was once billed as "the Country Caruso." --Don McLeese

Great album with some new songs but in the classic Johnny Bush style. John has picked some good material and really delivers on this one. Excellent fiddle and steel work on the whole CD typical of Johnny Bush recordings, Bobby Flore's fiddle playing is as good as it gets. There are four songs on this CD using jazz guitarist Jackie King that is a smaller group that really swings and Jackies playing is absolutely killer. Fantastic overall record!!
