The Hangmen Rip It UP!.......2001-02-23

Brian Small and The Hangmen are worth every nickel you'd spend -- either at a live show -- or here on this disc. It's 38 minutes of pure unadulterated rock and roll.

You will not be disappointed from the opener of "Downtown" where one finds all the seediest "Loners, Junkies & Liquor Stores" through the hate/love message of "I Luv U" to the most mesmerizing song "Blue Light." A truly well crafted and tension filled album from a person whose lived the songs.

I recommend both this album and the previous one, which may no longer be available. I've followed The Hangmen in LA for years. Great shows too.

Steal this disc!.......2000-09-28

It's not everyday you hear a CD that is great from the first note to the decay of the last chord, but Metallic I.O.U. is one of them. The songs are well written and performed (guitarist Jimmy James deserves kudos for his lead and slide work on the record)- these guys live what they sing about and offer no apologies for it. "Downtown," "Bent," "I Luv You," "Broke, Drunk & Stoned" and a killer cover of the Lords of the New Church's "Russian Roulette" stand out. The CD is just cool all the way through.

My pick of the week is the snortin' and snotty new live album from The Hangmen, "We've Got Blood On The Toes Of Our Boots", a ripsaw and whiskey scorcher on the Acetate Records imprint. Hitting the stage full-throttlelike a wild amalgam of the Lords of the New Church, Warrior Soul, Johnny Thunders, and Beggars Banquet era Rolling Stones, this Soutehrn California four-piece knows the "Amen, Brother!" power of monster rock music that makes your body shudder and grunt out. Highlights include the track "Over For You," perhaps the best kiss-off song since the Stones' "Dead Flowers," and special guest Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers dropping in on the track, "Coal Mine."

After appearing on several compilations in recent years including pebbles & signed D.C. the hangmen finally have their sole album reissued on dc formely known as the reekers and based in Washington d.c., the hangmen were centred around the talents of guitarist tom Guernsey and put out three 45's, plus the album bittersweet in that groundbreaking year of 1966. Originally released on monument (slp 18077) the album is a fine example of the U.S. mid 60's sound whether it's close harmony soft or a stomp through some fuzzed beat garage R&B. their first two classic 45's the harmonica driven punt of what a girl can't do, and the gentle fuzz of faces are both reworked on the album and included alongside cover versions of dream baby psyched with a hint of sitar let it be me, and an extended workout of Van Morrison's Gloria. The title of my review is the chorus of the 3rd song on the CD, "Get It", which is exactly what more people should do. Get this CD.

The way people feel about Iggy I feel about Bryan Small, a rock icon I have loved forever. He is notorious for the number of major labels who have dropped his contract after the records failed to hart due to lousy promotion. But a small cadre of worshippers adore his every move and hail his songwriting as the best to come down the pike since the hey day of Lou Reed back in the late 1960s. LOTERIA isn't his best LP but it ushers in a new configuration of Hangmen, and this one sounds like it could do Small's material justice in the long run (or live shows, Hangmens' forte.) None of the tracks have the sway of "Bent" their tremendous anthemic single which ushered in the new millennium, and yet "Wild Beast" is pretty memorable and will have you hollering in the car as you skim along the 405 at 4:05 a.m. Angelique Congelton is a mighty fine bassist and her voice is like honey on fire.

The sentiments of living too long and for too little ring true to me, and anyone who's heard his songs knows that Small's been to see the hooting owl and lived to kiss the snake. The band here is a different mix up of players than those that appeared on "We've Got Blood On The Toes Of Our Boots," but they seem capable and you know they have to be good with people if they can make it through a whole LP with King Spooky, Bryan Small. The way he sings it's like all of your heart got mushed up into a little ball then strained through a handkerchief.

At a recent show someone in the crowd told me that Robert Johnson made a pact with the devil that he would sell his soul to him in exchange for coming back as Bryan Small.

The subject matter on the lyrics wasn't very diverse, and gunplay/dope-dealing rhymes were abundant. Now, I don't have anything against that, but when it's used in excess, it gets quite boring. The beats on some of the songs didn't do anything for me. Tracks like Gun Squad, Can't Front, and Ya Feel Me, had some either below average or straight up wack beats. However, most of the rappers featured are either average or above average, so there's really nobody that's outright wack.
This album could've received 2 or 2.5 stars from me but what earned this CD its 3.5 stars were the certified street bangers like ... Holla Boston, High Noon, Treason, and Who's Livin' It. The beats on these tracks will get your head nodding for sure and the thug life lyrics come out really dope this time.
Some of the words on certain songs are edited even in the explicit version, so that kinda shows ya that this is some hardcore rap.
Ecen though i gave this CD 3.5 stars (which is not bad), this Boston representatives rep their hometown to the fullest, and hopefully, they'll put it in the map of the East Coast rap scene.

I'm so into this Hangmen 3 record. These guys are the producersof the millenium. Really phat beats, great raps, boomin' bass. ... "Holla Back" should be blowin' up big. It's an anthem. I wish they were coming to CA. ...

This cd is great. Each song has it's good qualities and the cd overall is probably one of the best i've heard in awhile. When u first listen to a lot of the songs on this album they don't sound that great, but if u listen to them for a while u realize how good each track is. There's mayb 2 tracks on this cd that aren't that good, but many other tracks make up for that. All in all, this is a great cd and i would urge anyone, especially people who like the mademen cd, to buy this and phatten your collection. I would give this cd a 4 1/2 stars and urge anyone who is a fan of rap and hiphop to buy this.

Blood Curdling Live Psychobilly.......2004-02-08

Loz and company spew evil all over the stage on these 18 tracks of live Psychobilly madness. The Hangmen really have all there graves covered on this live album playing at least two songs from each of the five albums, including their very first album "Gutbucket Rock n' Roll", which is yet to be released on cd. The sound on this album is amazing, the vocals are clear, the guitar sounds great and the stand-up bass is right up front. It's great to hear classic Hangmen songs like "Acid Bath" and "Songs That The Dead Men Sing" being play live along side newer Hangmen wreckers like "(I Was A) Teenage Suicide" and "Dancing On Your Grave". There are so many great songs on here, the graveyard rocker "Zombie Boy", their nasty rewrite of The Rolling Stones "Play With Fire", the disease ridden "Slither" and the ghoul stomper "Body Bag" are just few of them. The album ends with their raucous cover of The Meteors Psychobilly classic "Radioactive Kid". If you want an album of live voodoo Psychobilly then pick up this release. But when they drag you from some god forsaken swamp jibbering and a blabbering like a demented Charlie Feathers, just make sure to tell 'em The Hangmen sent ya.

It's kind of psycho.......2006-02-09

...but not quite, however that doesn't mean this album isn't good. In fact, it's full of variety, so kudos to these boys for not going the samey-route. Tracks to check out: Mortocracy Manor, Bitter End -- one for swinging, one for rocking out. It's a bit more metal than it is psycho, but no one ever said metal was bad. I'm interested to see how these lads are going to market themselves. Don't let the labels confuse you, music listeners! Keep your mind open and try not to get sucked into what is psychobilly. It is and it isn't. In fact, hard to say what this is, but at least it's fun. It won't blow you away, but you'll at least enjoy the ride.

Well, these guys sure aren't lookers, but chicks seem to dig them anyway.

They are like no one else I have EVER heard and they are almost singlehandedly reviving the LI/Brooklyn scene with their bass-slapping, experimental psychobilly sound.

This CD rocks and once you finish learning all the words, you should definitely check out their live sound!

What can you say about a band whose cult following keeps growing by the minute?. First. If your tired of the redundant music blaring out of your radio, check these guys out. For a young band they have a deep, well rounded sense of all styles of music. On Carnivale of Freaks they have managed to incorporate guitar styles from a plethora of musical influences. From country to rockabilly, to flat out rock and psychobilly. Where else can you find a band today where some of their influences are Dick Dale, Johnny Cash, Social D and the Sex Pistols?. Sean on lead guitar and Ian on rhythm make for a dynamic duo of frills, riffs and straight up rock and roll. While James's stand up bass can only be listened to at a volume set at 10. All this complimented by the scorching beats of Eric on drums and Tony as frontman and lead singer. This CD is a must have for anyone who wants to branch out on their musical listening frontiers and have something in their collection or to show off to friends with a little musical knowledge.

A Definite Refresher..........2006-02-01

Well, I picked up this CD at their live show and this is amazing... It's so great to hear bands doing different things, especially in a world of redundant musical garbage.

Their CD is just as amazing and energetic as their live shows. I was thoroughly impressed by the upright bass players speed and talent, the drummer laid down a solid backbeat and the guitars were amazing, throw in singer who can croon and scream and you have one of the best underground bands around.

If you're into horror movies, punk, psychobilly, rockabilly or just straight up rock 'n' roll, this album is a must have.
