Amazon.com essential recording
This acoustic supergroup joined forces in the summer of 1988, and the result was a true landmark in "new acoustic" music. As if bluegrass (and even "newgrass") was too constricting, the quintet--Sam Bush (mandolin), Jerry Douglas (dobro), Bela Fleck (banjo), Mark O'Connor (violin), and Edgar Meyer (bass)--incorporates classical-style themes and arrangements within the context of bluegrass instrumentation. Their unbelievable technique and musical ability was never in question; however, what makes the album special is the uncanny blend of precision and freedom, of improvisation and structure. Each of the 10 compositions were written by a different twosome (do the math permutations). Playful bluesy lopes ("Pink Flamingo") accompany tinges of reggae ("The Locks of Dread"), Celtic ("Macedonia"), and Middle Eastern ("Blue Men of the Sahara") music. There are urgent burners, somber mood pieces, and tender ballads, all delivered with grace. --Marc Greilsamer

One of the best crossover albums of all time.......2007-03-08
The incredible chemistry of this ensemble of string wizards mixes bluegrass sounds with every other genre in a way not yet duplicated. Unreal. You must have this CD.
The Telluride Sessions (Strength In Numbers).......2007-01-12
I first heard the group "Strength In Numbers" years ago on a show called Lone Pine Special. The entire band was phenomenal. It took bluegrass in a whole new and exciting direction. Each player is amazing in his own right as well as mixing beautifully with the other players. Most of this music is what I consider a bluegrass jazz fusion. This is a wonderful CD to include in an otherwise standard collection of traditional bluegrass. The virtuosity of each of these musicians is mindboggling. Some of the cuts make you want to jump up and dance while others cause you to pause, intently listen, and examine the musical techniques presented. Being a banjo and guitar player myself, it was a real joy to listen to such prolific musicianship. I found myself challenged and awed by this CD. I highly recommend this CD.
Bluegrass a little less blue.......2006-12-13
Bluegrass remains in many ways a music that holds its devotees close but perhaps offers less to the uninitiated or to those for whom the insistance on rigorous adherence to some predefined bluegrass standard seems a bit self-involved. Often times reverence towards tradition and outright musical athleticism get in the way of what is at the core a very strong musical message. This CD is one that easily reaches across boundaries and, with bluegrass sensibilities intact but not binding, presents contemporary acoustic country at its best. The musicians present are all masters of their instruments and all have worked together and known each other for years. The music they produce seems almost effortless but at the same time conveys no sense of sloppiness or lack of professionalism. There is a clear musical statement here coupled with a strong feeling so that the musicianship serves an end rather than just becoming an end in itself. Standouts include One Winter's Night, Blue Men of the Sahara, and the wonderful mandolin duet on Macedonia featuring Sam Bush and reminding us that Mark O'Connor can play anything. For the bluegrass traditionalist, the music may seem heresy. For the rest of us, this is a wonderful recording suitable for repeated listening. Definitely not for bluegrass fans only.
As fresh as ever.......2006-09-07
I just bought it; 17 years after its release. Not that that should matter as I have purchased jazz recordings from the fifties. This CD is my first introduction to bluegrass or newgrass or whatever grass. I agree with some of the reviewers that this music is beyond classification. I don't think it gets any better than this. I love the melodies, the harmonies, musicianship and the quality of the recording. I listen to it at home and in the car. There are some world influences in couple of numbers. By the way, "Macedonia" has a Balkan tint to it, not celtic. Inspired by this CD I started tracking the recording of individual artists involved as the group represented a "summit" of sorts. Next thing I will be moving to the Appalachian Mountains.
Acoustic fire!.......2005-12-25
It all started when my friend Ashley used "Macedonia" (track six) to demonstrate the quality of his JBL iPod speaker ring. Never having listened to bluegrass before, I asked what kind of music it was and he said it is beyond classification. So I listened to "Slopes" and got the kind of euphoric rush you get when you're having a sports-related high or the ecstatic sensation of moving at great speed.
No matter what you think of bluegrass or banjos, anyone who takes delight in music that is intricate, brilliant, sensuous and evocative, will find much to love about this album. Jazz fans will appreciate the Pat Metheny undertones and harmonies in tracks like "One Winter's Night." I would be first in line for any new project by this line-up of virtuoso musicians. What a joy to listen to flawless musical jamming!

Add this one to your collection.......2005-10-20
This is a very decent album. I am not a huge fan, but this album and Special Forces are true classic rock albums. There is not a bad track on this CD. And some of these are some really good rockers!!!
Unfortunately, this was the last good album .38 Special made.
Music Lover.......2005-09-09
I have been a huge fan of .38 Special for a long time. This album, "Strength in Numbers" has been my favorite. I have the album and cassette but not the CD. This album has the best of the songs they have released.
A Solid Rock and Roll Album from 38 Special!!.......2004-04-10
"Strength in Numbers" is the 1986 album release from Southern Arena rockers 38 Special. At the time, the band was at the peak of a winning streak crafting albums of upbeat melodic pop-rock with a slight Country tinge. This album is no exception. It's a fantastic album from beginning to finish and displays the band's tight musicality and hook-filled songwriting at its best.
Guitarist Don Barnes is mostly up front on lead vocals here while main lead singer Donnie Van Zant takes a step back from the microphone until the very end of the album bringing it to a dynamic finish on its final two tracks.
Tracks such as the hits "Somebody Like You" and "Like No Other Night" were all over the airwaves when this album was released. Other standouts such as "Last Time", "Just A Little Love", "Hearts On Fire" and "Against The Night" are impossible to dislike and contain enough hooks to have you humming in no time. The slower tracks ("Once In A Lifetime" and "Has There Ever Been A Good Goodbye") are equally enjoyable and shows the band tackling ballads as effortless as their trademark rock numbers.
With all this said, "Strength In Numbers" is a great album and a wonderful trip down memory lane. The album also marked the end of an era for 38 Special. Two years later, the band regrouped with a new line-up without guitarist/singer Don Barnes. Barnes did return to the band a decade later bringing back its signature sound.
If you can find a copy of "Strength In Numbers" (as I was fortunate enough to find), pick it up. It's worth it.
Undiscovered Gem........2003-12-23
In many ways, it's a mix of their early 80s hard Country tinged rock, and the arena pop/rock of their next album "Rock & Roll Strategy."
1) Somebody Like You -- Energy packed arena rock minor hit with a slight southern sound. A heartbreak and break-up song these guys do so well. I'm still amazed this didn't become a huge hit.
2) Like No Other Night -- Another small hit. Similar to the first song, but not quite as poppy or catchy.
3) Last Time -- Melodic, only slightly less heavy pop tune about this being the 'Last Time' his girl will get another chance again. I don't think it was actually a hit, but I very vaguely *think* I might have heard it played on the radio. (Keep in mind, I was only about 4 years old when this came out). It's also worthy of being a big hit.
4) Once in a Lifetime -- The first song to be a semi ballad. Not as good as the first three tunes, but another underrated pop masterpiece. Just another reason to pick this entire album up, even if you have a hits package.
5) Just A Little Love -- More of a Country sounding mid tempo rocker, about how 'Just a little love can go a long way.'
6) Has There Ever Been A Good Goodbye -- A good question. LOL. A slightly uptempo southern rock ballad which begs this very question. One of the more pop songs of the album.
7) One in a Million -- Just about the most underrated song in their catalogue. A true ballad, with an '80s poppy, melodic sound. Could have easily been a huge hit. A precursor to what would be on their next album.
8) Hearts on Fire -- A tougher edged mid tempo rocker sure to please fans of the bands' earlier, heavier work. It's less pop and the most Country sounding song on the album, but it still fits in.
9) Against the Night -- A masterpiece which never deserved to be just an album track! Melodic, hard pop/rock arena anthem that's just a lot of fun. As an analogy, imagine Journey or Loverboy performing southern fried rock.
10) Never Give an Inch -- Back to a more basic, mid tempo southern sound. This time, about not giving in. A good, but not great album closer.
I'm not sure if this CD is even in print anymore. If you're into Eddie Money, Georgia Satellites, Lynyrd Skynard; 80 music; or even Country and you see this somewhere, pick it up! The best songs are actually the non-hits.
38 Specials Best.......2002-12-22
This was also my first 38 Special CD (actually it was an album), and everytime I play it, it ends too soon. Not a bad cut on this CD. There may have been stronger individual songs on their earlier stuff, but there was a big drop off in effort after that one or two songs, where the rest of the CD was not up to the same quality. Don Barnes had a hand in writing seven of the ten cuts here, and he is usually involved in their better songs. Rarely does he write one alone, but even on Flashback (a greatest hits CD), he was involved in eight of the fourteen cuts there. Not trying to put down the others in the band, but I personally enjoy his stuff the most. The song "Like No Other Night" is my personal favorite, but from beginning to end if you are looking for 38 Special's best that is not on a Greatest Hits package, this is the one you want to start with. The only drawback to buying this one first is that you will never be as pleased with any of the others from beginning to end. I have all but their live CD, and have never regreted having any of them.

A triumphant new album from a great band.......2007-02-28
I won't write a huge review, but I do want to say that after repeated listens I find that this album is pleasantly fantastic. Calla is really going in a new, more poppy direction with this album, and ends up with one of the best albums they've made. The first track, "Sanctify," is kind of disappointingly grungy and hard for me to listen to, but the rest of the album is made up of very smart and delicately constructed but relentlessly driving songs. "Defenses Down," "Rise," and "Dancers in the Dust" are all standout tracks, but overall this is a very strong album.
This album is better than their previous album "Collisions" but about as good as their masterpieces "Televised" and "Scavengers." I heartily recommend this album. Again, they're going in a new direction with these tracks, but it's a good direction.

Top 3 of my 3000 CDs collection.......2007-03-15
These two albums belong to my Top 3 albums of my about 3000 CDs collection between Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Allan Holdsworth, Screaming Headless Torsos and Frank Zappa. This CD is a must!!! Buy it!!!
The Best Funk/Metal Album You've Never Heard........2006-10-12
"Strength..." opens with simple guitar picking and suddenly explodes into a flying metal frenzy that instantly knocks you off your feet as the aptly titled "Break The Chains" does just that...not only on this great LP, but also in your mind. What follows is a non-stop barrage of great tunes addressing racial profiling, police brutality (the Bludgeoning "Crime Story")the loss of your soul in Hell ("Judgement Day")even "can't we all just get along?" sentiments set to bottom-heavy reggae ("Understanding")all delivered with the gusto, speed and virtuosity of 20 bands. While their chops are more polished than Bad Brains, their lyrics are less evocative than Living Colours' and they lack the bizarro, genius qualities of Fishbone, yet came with loads of metallic, brutal riffing, 24/7 Spyz were a promising, powerful band that the whole music world slept on, and they missed out big time. Hard to find (I still have my original cassette copy from 1992) but worth searching for, "Strength In Numbers" is a terrific release that somehow came and disappeared before getting the attention it truly deserved. A Lost Classic.

THE seminal newgrass fusion album........2003-01-15
A few years back, two of the musicians on this album (Edgar Meyer and Sam Bush, along with Mike Marshall) were involved in a similar project, "Short Trip Home" (STH), for which Joshua Bell, the classical violinist, had been invited along for the ride. It had been a short-term "classical crossover" chartbuster, and more than likely drew the attention of listeners unfamiliar with this music genre to this group, and this album. It is not a stretch to say that this one is the better album of the two, with room to spare: A collaboration of Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor (the fiddler that Joshua Bell really couldn't be), Bela Fleck, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas never has an "odd man out," as is the case for STH. Here, on "Telluride Sessions," everyone is in his element.
Those wishing a direct comparison between the two albums should start at the end of this one, with "Blue Men of the Sahara." After a somewhat "reserved" start, this track winds up with a fury that is every bit the equal of "Death by Triple Fiddle" on the STH album (where Bell, try as he might, just doesn't fit in with the group, in a way that might charitably called painful). Continuing in reverse order for a bit, "Slopes" gives Fleck, on banjo, and O'Connor, here on guitar, the opportunity to swap hot choruses; in my humble opinion, the best track on the album, thanks to Fleck's finger-bending (and mind-bending) work.
The triple-threat (fiddle, guitar, mandolin) talents of O'Connor are found throughout the album. As one who came rather late to the appreciation of this man's monster talents, it is a pleasant surprise to me to hear that he was in as fine and as fully-developed a form in 1988 as he is today.
Of the five, Meyer seems always to be the catalyst (as can be seen from all the subsequent albums he's been the focal point of throughout the years, mixing and matching the talents of all the individuals). With his inestimable contributions to this and later albums, it is difficult - but necessary - to keep in mind that he leads a second, and equally public, life as a classical contrabassist and composer!
This is a seminal album, setting down a genre more than a dozen years ago that is as hot and as fresh today as when it was first released. May it never go out of print. And, with the benefit of 60 collective years of subsequent work by these five, may they soon go back into the studio for a long-awaited sequel.
Bob Zeidler
The Best of the Best.......2000-06-15
I think anyone who enjoys pristine acoustic music with bluegrass, newgrass, and classical influences will keep this album high on their list of keepsakes. The artists featured here are some of the best, men considered virtuosos at their craft. This album is a must have for fans of Bela, Sam, Jerry, Mark, and the unbelievable Edgar Meyer.

The name 24-7 spyz sounds like a rap group but it's not but that's ok I hate rap anyway these guys rock. the best song stunt man i seen the music video years ago. 5/5 stars
Listen 2 this album 24-7.......2004-05-08
This is my stuff here... 4 real!!!
As a musician and a fan of various genres of music I must say that Black Rock is much needed. It seems like rock and roll has been completely co opted by white folx. Don't get me wrong, I luv me some Metallica and Black Sabbath and Led Zep. But I dearly miss Jimi, Eddie Hazel and the soul that black people have always put in2 rock and roll.
Anyway... THIS ALBUM. DAMN. I can remember when I 1st walked in2 a record store in STL Central West End with my partnas and we heard CRIME STORY... it was over. I had been a Spyz fan fromt the 1st album, but this album (as well as Living Colour's Times Up and Fishbones' Reality of my Surroundings) showed a strength and maturity that truely had me convinced that Black Rock was here 2 stay. The guitar riffs and solos on here are monsterous, the bass lines xxxtra phat and the drums are 2 tight (sorry, Anthony was not as tight as this white boy). This was the Spyz peak album 2 me. I liked some of what they have done since, but most of it pales in comparison. I still have this in my CD wallet (it's been there since it came out) and I don't anticipate puttin it away soon.
PEACE
Still nothing like it today.......2004-01-25
After over ten years, this CD still sounds fresh and original. 24-7 Spyz runs the gamult on this one, ranging from heavy-hitting songs like "My Desire", "Break the Chains" and the refreshed "Stuntman"; soulfull songs like the ska-inspired "Understanding"; and even slower songs like "Earth and Sky" and the closing track "Travelling Day." Simply awesome.
How can I be.............2003-11-14
the first person to rate this AMAZING cd. What are you people thinking? For the fans of Living Colour, Fishbone, why have you not rated this cd? This cd came out in 1991 or 2 and has continued to make waves for those who love heavy metal soul. Jimi, Rick, Jeff and Joel are amazing. Too bad Joel and Jeff departed. I loved the original line up with P. Fluid and Anthony Johnson. What ever happened to them? Anyways, this was supposed to be their 2nd breakout recording (Gumbo Millenium was the first). I was hurt when P., Anthony, Jeff and Joel all departed when they did. They do have a new cd coming soon with Tony Lewis pounding. Of course Jimi and Rick are present. Also, get Jimi's 21CENTURYSOUTHBRONXROCKSTAR! Amazing cd. Love, Peace and Hair greese!

Rebuttle to "God Awful" Review.......2005-09-15
This is in response to the review titled "God Awful". Chris Conlon has every right to give a negative review. That is his opinion and we all know everyone has one. However, the comment, "...since the singer is a white boy, he fails miserably." displays his complete ignorance.
The race card has no place in this review, and if he had done 1/10 of research before he spewed out his negativity, he would have discovered the singer is Peurto Rican.
As for the quality of The Veil, I feel it is musically superb and Strength in Numbers efforts are recognized.
God Awful.......2005-07-23
Review by Tyler Wagnon:
Despite what some naysayer would lead you to believe, metalcore is not a bad genre. However, it is a genre that happens to play host to a lot of second and third rate imitators. There are still bands out there doing metalcore right. Unfortunately Strength in Numbers is NOT one of them.
Their breed of metalcore leans a bit more to the metal spectrum, but mostly because of the cliché Swedish melodic riffs. They have a few hints at some nice energetic songs, but the songwriting is pretty awful. Not to mention they don't do anything from a technical aspect.
The real thing that gets irritating, however, is the clean singing. They are trying way too hard to have a soulful crooning edge like Howard Jones, and since the singer is a white boy, he fails miserably. Without the clean vocals they are just an average metalcore band, but with them they become completely obnoxious.
If you have to have every metalcore album that comes out, go ahead and waste your money on this garbage. But heed this warning; the clean singing is vomit-inducing.
Incredibly Good.......2005-05-19
I would have to say this is an awesome album. Its Hardcore screams and softcore emo like singing are equalized perfectly. They are also talented with their intruments. The lyrics are great. deep and meaningful.
If you know Strength in Numbers well enough then you know that this album is just their Rise and Resist Album with about 4 new songs. If you have ever heard their very fist album Head Rush then you know their sound has been changed alot. Their first album awas mostly Rap-Metal. but this. This album is greatness from begining to end.
If your a fan of Hardcore/Metalcore/Emo then this is for You it truly is a perfect blend of all three elements.
Superb Metal - Get this CD if you are smart.......2005-04-29
This is one of the best metal albums to come out. What makes these guys shine is talent. They are not hiding behind studio trickery. Each member contributes to the overall product. What you end up getting is some pretty talented music. While not everybody will like them, I think the guy's one point about the solo's couldn't have been anymore off the mark. One of the standout features of this band ARE the solo's. I've been listening to metal since around 1983 and play music myself. I think I am qualified to know what a bad, poor or horrible solo sounds like. You won't find one on "The Veil" even if you look with a microscope (my favorite solo, btw is on track 2). Funny how every other review I've read on this album mentions bands like Killswitch Engage, Shadow's Fall, old-Metallica, and God Forbid. So whatever. I cannot wait to see these guys live.
If you like new metal or the great stuff from times-past, and want something that doesn't blend in with all the other crap that's out there and sounds fresh, buy this album.
This could have been really good..........2005-04-24
I'm sorry that I have to disagree with the two guys below me, but I really don't think that this CD is all that good. This doesn't mean that it totally blows. To the contrary, it has many good aspects, but in my opinion they're not brought together in the best way. What you get with S.I.N. is a band that hasn't decided yet what they really want to do musically: you have some metal riffs and some (really bad) solos, some hardcore stuff and even some emo influence in the melodic vocals. And here goes my biggest criticism: those melodic vocals are godaweful, kinda emoish, but like bad emo vocals. It totally destroys the whole record for me. Since they try to lean more towards the metal side of things (and do that really good riff-wise), I can see what they were trying to achieve: a screaming/melodic vocal sound maybe like God Forbid (one of those guys co-produced this CD) or Shadows Fall, but it all went down the toilet with the second vocalist they chose. When I try to imagine their music without the melodic vocals (the screaming singer is really good), it all sounds pretty good. The songs are often fast, have great breakdowns (actually not too far from God Forbid) and the production from Eric Rachel (even if you can hear that it was a "cheaper" Rachel production) is clean and thick at the same time. Guys, give the dude some singing lessons (or kick him out), leave the occasional hardcore riffs behind and I'll be all into your next CD!
