Remember hard rock? No, not alternative, not metal, not punk, not acid rock. Just good, old-fashioned, beefy, brawny, bluesy, hard rock. This power trio keeps a dying form alive, but not in a revivalist sort of way. Their ferocious but very soulful blend of blues rock and Southern boogie is a natural outgrowth of their musical influences, and with a tour docket that includes more than 200 shows a year, they've honed their sound to a fine edge. Life Before Insanity is their fifth record, but only their third studio effort, and it's their sharpest work--even though they've always been the most focused of all the jam-oriented ensembles. They've managed to craft a diverse and hardy 74-minute album, using a variety of moods, structures, textures, and time signatures, without ever really straying from their robust core sound. One minute Warren Haynes is trading searing licks with Ben Harper, the next he's deep inside a beautiful acoustic ballad, then he's blistering through a Robert Johnson cover with steely slide guitar. As with any hard-rock band worth their weight, there's a bit of arena-rock drama, but it's inevitable when you match brains and muscle. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Righteous Blues-Rockers Tear It Up Here.......2003-11-12

LIFE BEFORE INSANITY, Government Mule's last album with the late, great Allen Woody on bass, is a great slab of ZZ Top/Montrose-style hard blues-rock. All of the songs are great, especially "Bad Little Doggie." Leader Warren Haynes is a blistering guitarist and singer, and his belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes this album an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars The Deeper You Go Let That Hard Ass Mule Carry On.......2003-03-24

This disc is part of the reason why I don't burn or share studio discs. This is an inspired work of art. It is the last Govt Mule studio work that includes founding bassist, Allan Woody. The song writing is inspired, the lyrics are pure poetry, often dark and brooding explorations of ego. and examinations of the self society. Warren Haynes' voice is powerful easily interpreting his private examinations of self and society. His tales often betray his emotions and feelings laying bare places most of us keep hidden. He is a modern slide, blues, rock guitar virtuoso. This is a studio work but you still hear great demonstrations of his improvisational skills. Skills currently being used by the Allman Brothers Band as well as Phil and Friends, two of the top improvisational bands of this and the last century. Matt Abts is a frenetic, embattled engine producing much of Govt Mule's horsepower. He hammers away on the drums, relentlessly battering the skins creating a consistent Thunder Thor would be proud of. Allan Woody powers the team shouldering the Mule's yoke. His contribution to the band is difficult to convey. A founding member and friend who's loss triggered a Govt Mule Odyssey that ultimately brought the fan the "Deepest End" series that culminates in a DVD/film that chronicles Rocks most unique and creative "Power Trio".

"Life Before Insanity" is ABTS-SO-MULE-LY FAB-MULE-OUS! A disc that makes me listen. It gets better with every spin!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2002-10-04

Why in the world do these record people keep taking this CD off the market. This is a solid jam CD that has some great gutiar work from Warren Haynes. He was in the Allman Brother for awhile and he can flat out play the slide guitar. Great song, Life Before Insanity. Buy this CD if you can find it. You won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Mule Power!.......2002-04-10

After the over-heavy, muddy Dose, I was pleased to find this effort more melodic and more musically leaning toward the adventurous first Mule album (one that knocked my socks off with the first play). There's more of the off the wall sounds, reverbs and tremloes and tones that made the first Mule so different from everything else. One listen to "Life Before Insanity" tells you everything you need to know about this album. If you don't like that track, you don't need this album.

From the simple riff that opens "Wandering Child" to the end of "It's My Life" (NOT the uncredited add on "If I Had Possesion Over Judgement Day," the old Rev Gary Davis track, if I am not mistaken... that is an unnecessarly and mediocre track) I can constantly roll this album and not get bored with it. There's always a new turn to be found in repeated listenings. The only other track I might program off is "Fallen Down", but it's not worth the time to even do that. Overall a very solid effort.

1 out of 5 stars P.U.!.......2002-03-17

This is one malodorous effort which I would advise serious music lovers to avoid like the Dengue fever. After all the good things I heard about this band I finally decided to buy this CD based on the reviews here at Amazon. Good Lord was I dismayed and disgusted when this abomination made it's debut on my CD player. I know these guys have a great pedigree, but what in the name of all things decent were they thinking when they unleashed this stench on an unsuspecting public? There is not a single tune on this CD worth playing a second time. I have probably listened to this CD from start to finish about 10-12 times, and it completely eludes me as to what people see in it. The lyrics are pathetic and the playing is unimaginative to the point of being embarrassing. I have played this disc in the morning and in the evening. I have played it cruising down the freeway and lounging on my deck. I have played it in every imaginable spiritual, psychological, and mental state. And it continues to disappoint! Well done, lads. Hope my [number] bucks makes it all worthwhile. For my money, I'll stick with The Mississippi Allstars.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest album of it's genre.......2006-02-28

If there was one album i had to pick that should be heard by everyone i would have to choose edge of insanity. Not because it is the greatest album ever (which it very near is) but because not only have most people not been exposed to good neo-classical or shred music (which there is not very much of) but because edge of insanity is the only shred album which i would rank with the likes of bethoven or chopin. If someone asked me to name just one album that has been the most influencial in my life it would be this album. This is the album that me and my long time friends grew up listening to and falling in love with. Tony opens doors that have never been walked near and explores worlds you never imagined. BUY BUY BUY!

5 out of 5 stars A natural flow.......2004-06-22

I have many records by Tony Macalpine and whenever I feel like listening to some killer guitar I usually stick this album in the sterio. What is amazing about this guy is that he can play classical piano to a high degree as well as the guitar. If anybody recently watched the Live at Astori, London DVD by Steve Vai, Mr Macalpine is in the band and he make an excellent contribution. My only critism about Tony Macalpine's style on the guitar is that I find a lot of his music flows kind of robotically and whilst you can cram speed in at any time, holding a note and bending a note compliments both. I hope though from a fans view, that he continues to work with Vai.

5 out of 5 stars Killin'.......2004-01-24

This CD is killin, Tony MacAlpine is the MAN. Every track is stupid good and his technique is unbelieveable. His musical vocabulary is way bigger than even Yngwie's ever was. A few of u may have a hard time stomaching that, but it's the real deal, just like this CD. If u wanna hear a ferocious attack on virtuosic guitar, buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars The best album you've never heard.......2003-12-03

Putting Tony Macalpine together with Billy Sheehan put this album over the top. While other bassists such as Tony Franklin serve well as a backdrop to Macalpine's virtuoso assault on guitar and keyboard, Sheehan takes it to the next level with acrobatic bass counters. How Macalpine has never gotten more press is one of the great mysteries.....

5 out of 5 stars Not for the weak: Intense and frantic.......2003-11-16

Some people just don't "get" this CD. This is guitar playing compositional excellence. It is fast and furious, but unlike many other similar guitarits, it is NOT a "fast for fast's sake" endless repetition of scale after high-speed scale. The songs are very well written, complex, multilayered compositions.

The classical influence is obvious, and his skill is considerable. As someone that enjoys music from speed metal to pop to going to an orchestra now and then, I see this music for what it is, highly skilled songwriting played by an excellent performer. I was absorbed by this CD the moment I first heard it almost 20 years ago, it is like Beethoven on crack. The title of the CD is rather appropriate.

Especially if you've never heard Tony MacAlpine before at all, it is hard to really gauge him by short little sound samples. You won't "get" many of these songs until you listen to them a few times and let them sink in. I'll try to give you my sense of this CD: frantic, intense, cold, calculated, complex, and precise.

4 out of 5 stars Back on Track.......2006-08-29

After their somewhat uneven second album Sigh No More, German power metal gods Gamma Ray came roaring back with their 1993 album Insanity & Genius.

Insanity & Genius is an extremely solid album full of melodic power metal anthems. Soon to be departing vocalist Ralf Scheepers gives an energetic performance, and founder Kai Hansen's guitar work and songwriting are every bit as good as they were on the band's debut. No Return, Future Madhouse, and Heal Me are some of the album's better songs, as is the excellent title track. The band's cover of Birth Control's "Gamma Ray" is the album's highlight. Kai & company make it seem as though the song was written just for them. This is top notch power metal all the way, and it only gets better from here!

I suppose it goes without saying that Gamma Ray would appeal to Helloween fans. Fans of the more recent power metal bands like Sonata Arctica, Freedom Call, Edguy and Hammerfall also owe it to themselves to check out Gamma Ray, and Insanity & Genius is a good album to start with.

4 out of 5 stars Ralf will be missed.............2005-11-02

After the letdown of "Sigh No More" and the departure of Uwe Wessel and Uli Kusch, newcomers Thomas Nack and Jan Rubach join Ralf Scheepers, Dirk Schlchter and Kai Hansen to craft one of Gamma Ray's most underrated albums, "Insanity & Genius". The album starts out with "Tribute to the Past", a raucous tune that proves Nack and Rubach have the skills to hang with Kai & Co. From there it moves onto "No Return" and "Last Before the Storm", decent enough songs that seem to lack that little extra something to move them beyond your typical speed-metal songs.

"The Cave Principle" is Gamma Ray's first foray into a more progressive sound, and tends to plod along in an unimaginative way. "Future Madhouse", the first single off the album, is a catchy speed-metal frenzy that returns the band to its "Heading for Tomorrow" roots. The cover version of "Gamma Ray" is well done and translates well to the band's genre.

Next come two of the best Scheepers-era songs, "Insanity and Genius" and "18 Years". "18 Years" especially, has Scheepers singing his heart out and hitting notes that defy human physics. The man is THAT damn good.

The album goes downhill in my opinion with "Your Turn is Over", but is picked up by one of the best songs on the album, the quirky yet powerful "Heal Me". Schlchter sings lead on "Turn", quite badly at that, while Hansen handles the vox on "Heal Me". "Turn" breaks up the continuity of the album and makes you wonder just how much better it might have sounded with Ralf singing it, but Kai saves the day with his singing and playing on "Heal Me". "Brothers" rounds out the album, an anthemic finale that signals Scheepers' departure from the band.

Overall the album is infinitely better than "Sigh No More", and returns the band to its speed-metal roots that it departed from on "Sigh". It's unfortunate that Scheepers (who was looking to become Judas Priest's new vocalist at the time the album and tour got underway) departed after the album, as Nack and Rubach infused the band with a much needed spark. If you can get the re-release so much the better; it contains three bonus tracks: A longer version of "Gamma Ray", as well as an awesome cover of Judas Priest's "Exciter" and an even more awesome cover of the Helloween classic "Save Us", which Ralf handles as well as, if not better than, Michael Kiske. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A metallic classic.......2000-08-22

When I heard "Tribute to the Past" for the first time a couple of years ago, I knew I had to buy this album. It has to be one of the greatest heavy metal songs ever recorded....every second is pure heavy metal bliss. But it's by no means the only classic on this masterpiece of a record....."No return", "Gamma Ray" and the title track are all melodic heavy metal at its best. This is also the most progressive of all GR albums, just listen to songs such as "Heal me" and "the Cave Principle". Songs like these have been missing from their more recent works. The only letdown of the CD is the 3r track, 'Last before the storm', which is a your standard, predictable metal song. But all the other 10 tracks are GREAT. This is definitely one of the most underrated heavy metal albums of all time, easily the best Gamma Ray record out there. Though Kai's not a bad singer, his vocals are no match to Ralf's and in my books Gamma Ray has never been the same since Ralf left. But this album is a classic, I recommend it to anyone who has a thing for great melodies, skillful musicianship, powerful vocals and all those things that make Gamma Ray a metallic powerhouse.

1 out of 5 stars LOW CLASS HEAVY METAL.......2000-08-01

This is a strange CD. THe album starts prety well, the first three tunes being stupendous. THen, all of a sudden, it falls completely apart, displaying some of the worst compositions ever written by Kai Hansen, definitely below his standards. GAMMA RAY really started to being great with the "LAND OF THE FREE" album.

4 out of 5 stars MY FIRST CONTACT WITH GAMMA RAY..........2000-06-30

THis was my first contact with Gamma Ray, and a great one! HAnsen kicks in this album, along with Schlachter and Ralf singing. Great tunes, great metal.!

5 out of 5 stars Just Pure Enjoyment!.......2004-01-23

There I was in a camlot music in late 1993 buying this single called "Show Me" and it was most excellent. Strange to this day how I didn't find myself attempting to buy the album until November of 1995 when I was told it was no longer in print. What made this even stranger was that at the time I found this out she had a single on Billboards top 40 dance chart! It just goes to prove you need not have an album in print to be popular. With nice touches of Soul and a little jazzy, it's excellent house music to dance to. Good to listen to on the road or around the house. Truly unique. Never heard anything quite like it before or since. Thanks Nate!

5 out of 5 stars The album that made me a fan forever.......2003-11-05

This is the album that took Ultra Nate to the top of the dance charts with every single release. This album is superbly produced and offers a wide range of material from soul, to funk, to floor-stomping house. Every track is good, but my favorites are "Joy", "One Woman's Insanity" and "Incredibly You". The Basement Boys produced most of it, but there are some excellent tracks produced by Nellee Hooper, and D-Influence. "Incredibly You" is the first song she did with D-Influence. It's lush, sweeping string arrangement, horn section and funky bassline make this my favorite song on the album. I feel in love with Ultra Nate after ONE listen to this album, and have been a hard core fan ever since. This album represents a wide range of musical styles and emotional range, and is tied together in a neat package of Ultra's vocals and great album art

5 out of 5 stars A+++.......2003-07-09

Ultra churns out some real upbeat house-y tunes here. I've owned this album four times, and I highly recommend it to anybody who likes her sound, or her type of sound, which at the point this album was released, had a "progressed house" type of vibe to it. "Show Me" is my favorite track.

Warface is a three piece death metal band from San Diego. They formed in 2000 and released a self-titled EP in 2001 that has made a big name for them in the underground metal scene. Laura Christine is a rarity in the extreme metal scene being a female handling all guitar rhythms and solos landing her, her own line of Warface V guitars with KxK Guitars. Scott Ellis has been featured as one of the world's best drummers along side Chris Adler of Lamb of God and Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy. Signing with Deathquake Records in 2004, Warface was taken into the studio to work with Alan Sanderson to record their much anticpated full length album, Insanity of the Obsessed.

To anyone loking for The Cimson King you will not find him in this collection. Instead you will find R.Fripp to be more of a court jester. This cd leans more towards the jazzy silly side of progrock and thats a good thing.I thought at best this disk would be a dark and forboading peek into a tangled web of 9/8 time sigs and elaborate melodies oddly it sounds to me as if Caravan and Cream made a record. I love both those bands and this CD.I just wanted to give a friendly heads up to anyone who thinks this will be 21st century schizoid music.

4 out of 5 stars ahhh, but they're burning all the artists!.......2005-11-30

This album was first brought to my attention by a farmer in Israel; on first listen I found it to be highly entertaining, particularly the excellent musicianship and very British narratives. I would still say this is a highly entertaining album, albeit a bit uneven. Some tracks definitely shine more than others, particularly tracks like newlyweds, digging my lawn, little children, how do they know, elephant song, and the bonus track she is loaded. The rest of the tracks are pleasant enough to listen to, but seem more like addendums linking the stronger tracks together. As mentioned earlier, the loose narrative structure of the album ensures that this approach works. In all, this is a very interesting and entertaining album, with very worthwhile bonus tracks (she is loaded is worth the price of the album alone, alternate takes are interesting and quite different). This is a unique one off from a bygone era, one that I'm glad to have in my collection.

    5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.
