About the Artist
"We all can recall at least one circumstance, event, or time in our lives which, for better or worse, changed our life significantly. One such life-changing event happened to me in the Summer of '77. It was then that my parents bravely decided to quit their jobs, pack up the dog and me, and leave the Midwest (Detroit, MI) for a better life in Carmel, California.

Upon leaving Detroit, I gave my good friend Mark my drumsticks (I was playing the drums then). In turn, he gave me a copy of "Physical Graffiti" - my first Led Zeppelin album. In our new apartment I hooked up my Pioneer Stereo (complete with 8-track, naturally) and was exposed to some of the greatest music I had heard then or have heard since. That album, as well as other Zeppelin albums that followed, became part of the "soundtrack", if you will, to my life in beautiful California.

To this day, after years of musical training in the classics and with many more years of living under my belt, California still evokes in my mind recollections of the songs on this CD. Whenever I visit the wine country to the north, drive along Highway 1 toward Big Sur, or walk along Venice Beach in Los Angeles, I think of this music.

It's a personal thing, I know - perhaps a bit esoteric. Whether the music on "Going To California" calls to your own mind images of California or not, I just hope that you enjoy this wonderfully eclectic mix of Led Zeppelin songs that I have arranged for the classical guitar."

Richard DeVinck has lived on the Monterey Peninsula for the past 24 years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in classical guitar performance from UCLA. and has performed throughout California and taught guitar for the past 12 years.

Product Description

4 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable.......2003-08-14

This is an excellent CD. I usually avoid tribute albums, because they are never as good as the original. Although these songs are obviously not as good as the originals, they are excellent as classical guitar songs. If you like Led Zeppelin and classical guitar than you will like this CD. My only complaint is that it is too short. However, if you don't like classical guitar than it might sound a lot like Musak. Download the free sample MP3s. The rest of the songs are as good or better.

2 out of 5 stars Bland, unimaginative twist on Zeppelin.......2003-05-20

I bought this album in hopes of finger-blistering flamenco and fluid acoustic renditions of my favorites. Instead, i received a CD with the most straight-forward, carbon-copy of the originals. Each song is almost exactly note-for-note. DeVinck takes the stength out of each track with dulled versions of Page's original riffs and solos. I was not expecting a masterpiece or top-notch classical guitar when I bought this album, however, i expected a little more talent and creativity to be displayed (like the string quartet tributes 1 & 2). Anyways, i say pass on this one, but you might like it... if you like elevator music.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully rendered classics.......2003-05-03

What a surprise find this disk has been. It jumped out during an Amazon search, and I decided to check it out.

With "Going to California," Richard DeVinck has taken a collection of classic Led Zeppelin acoustic-based songs and arranged them for classical guitar.

The group Led Zeppelin shared an eclectic taste for diverse musical styles, and Jimmy Page pulled those blues, folk, Celtic and Eastern elements into his songwriting.

Richard DeVinck's tribute performances are beautiful reworkings of songs like "The Rain Song," "No Quarter," and "That's the Way." I might be struck down by the Hammer of Thor, but DeVinck is actually a much better technical player than Jimmy Page. Page brought a unique emotion to his songs, and had an unmistakable style, but these songs are flawlessly executed by a player who has obviously spent a bit of time with the instrument.

This disk will appeal to hard-core Zeppelin fans and classical guitar lovers alike. Those who think of LZ as nothing but heavy metal gods will be surprised at the melodic beauty of a song like "Thank You" or "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You." This disk begs to be played anytime, whether it's early on a rainy morning, a sunny afternoon on an ocean highway, or a warm summer evening.

Oh, and check out the flamenco stylings on "Stairway to Heaven."

5 out of 5 stars acoustic, classic & celtic.......2002-08-12

Richard DeVinck gives a marvellous example of how Led Zeppelin can be played in an acoustic and 'classical' way. He combines classical elements with jazz and celtic influences and it all makes up for a fine listening experience. It shows clearly the more melodic and lyrical side of Led Zeppelin, without getting soft or too simplistic. Every song gets its own treatment and
R. DeVinck succeeds in getting the right atmosphere on every track. The sound is great too. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Though I debated having rock and roll at my wedding we.......2002-06-11

decided a gentler approach would do and this was the answer! I must have every Led Zeppelin tribute album there is and of course every Zed Zeppelin album. I always knew their songs were masterpieces for serious quiet contemplation as well as for the rock stage but now finally a CD that proves it....These are just the cuts I would have chosen for classical interpretation. Thanks to Master DeVinck.
