Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04
Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.
Brilliant !.......2001-12-26
This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.

each moment without you i die..........2005-03-12
Maybe you're here because you decided to seek out all of the bands that had ties to Rage Against the Machine. Maybe you're here because you bought Coheed and Cambria's CD and decided to check out some of the other releases from Equal Vision (if that's the case go buy Refused's EVERLASTING EP which Equal Vision also released once you're done here). Or maybe some old school NYHC kid (like me) laughed in the face of your Thursday bootlegs or Freya CD and pointed you towards this band. Whatever the reason was I'm glad you're here.
108 didn't start anything. They didn't invent chugging away on the C chord while screaming about deeply personal issues (see: Bad Brains). They weren't the first band to walk out on stage, dedicate their performance to some deity, strike a single note and cause what could best be described as pandamonium (See: Sesame Street's Oscar the Grouch...just kidding). They just did those things better than anybody else ever did before them and ever has since.
Their first album, Holyname, was a one track 10 song CD. A very gutsy move for a band in the early nineties, especailly when you consider the cost of recording a CD before you could turn your computer into a recording studio. Holyname featured a 15 minute speech by the lead singer concerning the lyrical content of one of the album's songs, something which could have been addressed in the liner notes but hey, it wasn't my record to write =)
Songs of Separation, however, took a much more tradtional approach towards album construction (1song=1track=happy listeners)but sacrificed nothing in terms of cohesiveness of the music. This album floooooooows and is as much a credit to outstanding producing as it is to the guys who wrote the songs. The albums first track "Opposition" begins with distant feedback that leads to distorted chords and quite possibly the best scream ever recorded (Jonathan Davies screming "Are you ready?" on "Blind" doesn't hold a candle). Dasa's vocals were the focal point of this band and he sang with a range not found elsewhere in the HC scene. With start/stop breakdowns all over the place and guitar riffs that would thread themselves effortlessly through out the songs, 108 took a genre of music and RAN with it.
Other standouts from the album include "Son of Nanda" and "Solitary" which briefly feature Kate-O Eight (Project Kate) on back up vocals. "Thorn", however, is perhaps this albums greatest triumph. I credit this song for introducing me to the HC scene 10 years ago...it's that good.
There are no weak links to the chain here, people. What you get is a landmark Krishna-core album that many old timers like myself consider to be an essential recording from this genre. 108 recorded 1 more studio LP after this, 1996's "three fold misery", another step forward for what could have been a very big band. And just like Quicksand, Mind Over Matter and Refused they bowed out before their time. But just like those other bands they left us with music that is just as heavy and inspiring today as it was when it was released.
To get a taste of how powerful this band was live check out "One Path For Me Through Destiny" on Lost & Found Records.

"Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18
"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!
A Gem!.......2002-10-17
This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

And you stand there without your luck.......2003-10-10
Tugboat Annie played a show in my tiny little town of Moss Bluff, Louisiana in some lucky guy's garage. Back then I didn't know who they were, and neither did my brother, but he went to the show and came back raving about this band that played unbelievably catchy songs with this super-energetic singer. "Bird," the first song on this five-track-plus-one-hidden track gem, was the first song I ever heard from Tugboat Annie. I downloaded it and the song "Tell Me" and decided that I had to have the CD that "Bird" was recorded on.
"Bird" is an instant-classic melodic noise pop masterpiece, and Separation Songs is worth purchasing for it alone. It features drone notes that ring on for what seems like an eternity with the rest of the song being built around them, until they are suddenly-yet-smoothly replaced by another set of drone notes. With simple but oh-so-catchy leads floating up and down next to the drone notes, an innovative bass line that fleshes out the sound collage, and the energetic-but-not-excessive vocal part that easily lends itself to singing along, all set to a driving, quick-but-not-too-quick beat, I honestly can't think of anything I would change about the song.
Now that I've given "Bird" its due, I can move on to say that the rest of the album is really solid is well. The second song, "Contact," is a slower song with a stuttered beat that keeps the listener awake, with a good hook, and a verse that transitions into the chorus very nicely. The third track the name of which I can't remember at the moment (sorry, guys) is slower than "Contact," until it picks up at the end. The vocal part is rough, but it is intentional, conveying a sort of reckless desperation. This works well with each peaking chorus as he sings at the top of his lungs "Don't break down! Don't break down!" over a wall of melodic guitar noise. The fourth song, "Grass Parade," is instantly catchy, returning to a more upbeat feel and making great use of dynamics as it switches from verse to chorus and back. The vocal part of the chorus is so poppy and catchy it instantly latches on to your to your brain. "Seperation," the fifth song, is probably my least favorite, although if it appeared on the album of any mediocre artist it would shine out like gold. It is the slowest song on the CD, and in my opinion it drags a little bit, with guitar counterparts that seem the slightest bit out of tune at times.
The hidden track is hardly worth mentioning. In fact it's not worth mentioning. I mean, it's a hidden track. The only hidden track I ever heard that was worth putting on the CD was...wait...there never was one. Okay. Paz y gozo.
Good CD.......2000-06-22
Tugboat Annie has been around for about ten years now. They have many CDs including the newest one "the space around you". All the songs are good but bird is the best. I think that wake up and disappear is their best with posterboy & 745.

"the evidence of a great witness".......2007-01-19
These five volumes of Shostakovich's Complete Songs are simply astonishing. If admirers have with good reason found the private voice of the composer in his string quartets, there's another, perhaps more intimate voice to be found in his songs. Let this review stand for the entire collection - each disc yields generous returns. An entirely Russian production recorded in Russia, this is estimable treasure. If you love Shostakovich's music, the breadth of revelation found throughout these discs is overwhelming. Here is Shostakovich the man, genius, survivor, sufferer - but never victim. The works themselves are no less than a kind of eternal definition of art, an all-encompassing humanity borne by one man to our lasting benefit. The singing performances are uniformly excellent, as are the production values on every level, with fine sonics. Among the Russian singers who contribute, soprano Victoria Evtodieva, mezzo Liudmila Shkirtil, and the mighty bass Fyodor Kuznetsov stand out. Most of the songs are set for voice and piano. The cycles and a number of other songs use orchestration of varying details. Pianist Yuri Serov, besides distinguished playing, provides insightful commentary with each disc, ideal remarks full of detail - the title of this review is taken from his notes on 'The Anti-Formalist Raree Show', which he hails as '...a striking document of that bygone era, the evidence of a great witness.' What more fitting could be said of these amazing musical works and their composer? Full translation of every song text is included in each of the discs.

An American classic.......2001-01-21
This seminal recording is a must for the library of anyone serious in the study of American music. William Grant Still, often lauded as the "Dean of African American Composers," is among the most distinguished composers in the United States, regardless of his race. This anthology of his work explores his contribution to small scale genres, namely chamber music and song. Having been deeply enamored of the human voice, his music is imbued with lyricism for every instrument.
In this recording, Robert Honeysucker is a stand-out performer. His rich, vibrant baritone is perfectly suited to the rigourous requirements of Still's "Songs of Separation." Lynn Chang and Vivian Taylor perform Still's "Suite for Violin and Piano" with style and panache. The pathos and passion of Still's life can be discerned from the second movement of this work, in particularly.

Delius in Sunset Hues.......2002-01-16
Frederick "Fritz" Delius (1862-1934) embodied the late-Nineteenth Century idea of the "aristocratic radical": true to his own impulses, scornful of custom and commerce, agnostic in religion and liberal in amorous affairs, he was also an esthete of the most refined sensibility who struggled to express his sense of a beautiful and sometimes tragic world in his art. Like the nature-poet Wordsworth, Delius worked within an esthetic of the epiphany: in the midst of the loud world, he finds a quiet place ("Summer Night on the River" or "The High Hills") and sets the preparatory mood; briefly but powerfully, a vision of poignant beauty emerges, in the appearance and passing of which the witness and participant finds his own moment of transfiguration. All of Delius' characteristic works represent the organic blossoming-forth and swift withdrawal of some gorgeous but evanescent phenomenon, as in his set of orchestral variations on the Yorkshire folk tune "Brigg Fair." The tune seems to emerge from hints and prognostications, the way a river or stream emerges - inconspicuously - from rills and sources in the high ground, until, after a magnificent but brief minor-key apotheosis in the full orchestra, it melts away again into the quiet texture of things. In "Tommy" (later Sir Thomas) Beecham, fortune blessed Delius with an interpreter whose essentially Pagan convictions matched his own, and who not only played his friend's music frequently in concert but began recording it in the mid-1920s, just after the introduction of electrical recording. Beecham belonged in part to the milieu of Edwardian estheticism, but unlike the followers of Ruskin and Pater he understood the relation of technics to the preservation and dissemination of art. The Delius Festival (Beecham organized two, in 1929 and again in 1946) could reach a few thousand people; recorded albums of the Delius scores, on the other hand, might reach tens of thousands. Some of these recordings went into commercial release; others, for a variety of reasons, remained in the archives. Recently Naxos released three discs of early Delius-Beecham collaborations in its historical series. Now Somm, a British label, has produced two discs of similar, sometimes overlapping, material, all of it exquisite and much of it previously unheard outside the Delius-Beecham circle. In October 1934, for example, on the occasion of the Leeds Festival, Beecham took care that his performance of the choral-orchestral "Songs of Sunset" (1911, with texts by Ernest Dowson) be recorded. This performance (supplemented by a 1946 "take" of the final song) forms the centerpiece of the program on Somm-Beecham 08, sharing the disc with a 1934 performance of "An Arabesk" (1911, with text by Jens-Peter Jacobsen) and a generous selection of songs, about half of them with orchestral accompaniment; there is also the orchestral Prelude to "A Mass of Life," Part II. The choral singing is captured with remarkable clarity, much of it being comprehensible. In his book about Delius (1946), Beecham insisted "that in no circumstances should a large number of voices be employed" for this work, as "fifty or sixty at most are enough; otherwise the extremely personal harmonic sequences tend to be muddied or blurred." The Leeds performance seems to obey the dictum. In Olga Haley, moreover, Beecham finds a mezzo solo of the requisite "voluptuous quality" who "can cope with the rich middle register of the music," while in Roy Henderson he has a baritone capable of smoothly negotiating the "vocal angularities" of some of the movements. ("Notably in 'By the Sad waters of Separation.'") The third movement, "Pale Amber Sunlight," is especially entrancing - "a truly Delian product," as Beecham writes; the woodwind parts of the orchestral accompaniment come through with much warmth. To "An Arabesk," as to "Songs of Sunset," Beecham likewise imparts an intimate feeling. The poem of "An Arabesk" is actually quite disturbing, mixing love and sacrifice (or is it murder?) in an idyllic setting. Gary Moore's transfers from the archival sources work wonders, especially with "Songs of Sunset," not previously released in any form, the recording conditions of which must have been difficult. There is occasional congestion at the climaxes where the chorus is involved but in the main the acoustic reconstruction in both "Songs of Sunset" and "An Arabesk" is a marvel. The same may be said for the songs with orchestra, recorded in February 1938. Beecham would record these again in 1947, and the result can be canvassed on a Dutton CD. This Somm-Beecham CD is a fine production, invaluable for its "Songs of Sunset," and should be acquired swiftly by Delians.
Many first ever issues of Beecham conducting Delius........2001-12-26
More than half of the music included in this estimable CD derive from hitherto unissued recordings made at the 1934 Leeds Festival. In very acceptable sound, with a balance that favours the soloists Roy Henderson and Olga Haley, the principal works are "An Arabesque", and "Song of Sunset". Collectors have wondered about the elusive "Song of Sunset" recording for many years. Two subsequent attempts by Beecham to record this work are said to have dissatisfied him. Requests and searches for playable test copies of this 1934 Leeds Festival recording produced nothing until now. Here, from Beecham's own archives of test pressings, made available by Shirley, Lady Beecham, are heard all but the last few minutes of the 1934 performance. The missing part is provided from a 1946 recording. I understand that the missing part of the 1934 performance has since been located in the British Museum.
Also included here are all the recordings of Delius songs Beecham made, accompanying the soprano Dora Labbette. The singing of this fine English soprano was not only wonderfully pure, ethereal and graceful, it also clearly conveyed the songs' texts. Happily, it recorded well, although the singer was required to turn her head away from the microphone when taking a high, loud note - as can be heard several times in "Twilight Fancies".
The less said about the only orchestral item included, the better. Apparently 1938 recording techniques and venues were not kind to the special sonorities Delius created in the orchestration of his "A Mass of Life" prelude. The blurred, nebulous sound heard here produces no effect other than puzzlement.
