2 out of 5 stars Worst Little Tour of Whorehouse.......2006-06-06

Roxie Lucas saves this review from having a single star. Her performance was the shining star in a rather lifeless, dusty, and uninspired revival of the original production which thankfully avoided Broadway. Compare with the rollicking original recording and you will easily notice the lack of life, spirit and vibrancy in the new recording. The addition of A Friend to Me added nothing to the score but sluggish redundancy.

I saw this production . . . it was a fantastic tour. I love this CD and highly reccomend it! This is by far the best recording of the show. If you are a fan of Ann Margret or of this musical I am sure you will love it. Now some people have complained about Ann Margret's voice not being what it was . . . I think it's better. Her voice is smokey, breathy and sexy . . . and perfect for this Las Vegas meets honky tonk score. She is the perfect Miss Mona aside from Dolly Parton. The supporting cast is very strong here as well. Flashy costumes and scantily clothed men and women . . . how can anyone not love this musical.

THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS is always a delight, and in this new cast album of the recent national touring production starring Ann-Margret, it's even better than ever.

Ann-Margret takes on the role of the Chicken Ranch owner Miss Mona with aplomb, offering up a lively performance. She sings lovely renditions of "Girl, You're a Woman", "A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place", and a brand-new song written especially for this production, "A Friend to Me".

Gary Sandy does well by the character of Mona's old flame Ed Earl Dodd, with fine support from Rob Donohoe as Melvin P. Thorpe and Hal Davis as Edsel Mackay.

Avery Sommers adds a soulful voice to the character of the sassy bordello maid Jewel, and offers up a show-stopping "Twenty-Four Hours of Lovin'". Roxie Lucas plays the role of the thankless Doatsy Mae, and sings her self-titled number quite affectingly.

Terri Dixon and Jen Celene Little do well by the featured roles of Angel and Shy, with the Chicken Ranch girls offering up a superb rendition of the heartbreakingly-lovely "Hard Candy Christmas".

All-in-all, if you love this delightful musical, you'll adore this brand-new cast album!

4 out of 5 stars Star Power in the House - -The Whorehouse, that is........2002-03-06

Ann Margret`s singing voice is quite different from what you`d expect if you heard the previous cast album; however, she purrs her way through them while infusing a great deal of charm and personality to her renditions. Her numbers are not musically beautiful, yet they manage to be touching, sexy, rawnchy and pleasing. You can feel her elgant, strong, glamorous presence which, incidentally, are the character requirements for Miss Mona. The musical arrangements are superb, the energetic entr' acte is a welcome addition to the already familiar musical program. The ensemble is superband Watchdog, the Governor and Jewel all stand out in their solo numbers.

The sad note is, the "Doatsy Mae" number does no justice to the original. Although acceptably sung, it fails to covey the furstration, hope and dreams of the character. Overall, this CD is surely worth the price: with its good vocals, wonderful score and general sense of innocent mischief, you'll have a great time listening to this all-out for fun musical.

2 out of 5 stars Ann Margret Disappointing.......2002-02-25

After listening to this cast album I was horrified and disappointed at the way Ann Margret sounds. Her voice is not in good form and on more than one occasion she fails to stay on key. It is very sad to hear because she has always been one of my favorite performers. The show is coming to Portland in 2 weeks but I think I will bypass this particular production.
Bruce Kimmel always does excellent work. His CDs are flawless. However, everything seems horribly over miked, in particular Ann Margret. You can hear every breath she takes and it sounds like they were trying to compensate her voice. The orchestra sounds thin as though they are not using a lot of instruments. The chorus does not sound as rich and full as they do on the original Broadway cast CD. This might be due, in part, to the recording studio. It was recorded on their day off during a three week run in Dallas, Texas.
There are some excellent supporting performances (hence the two star rating)that are enjoyable. Roxie Lucas, as Doatsie Mae, has a nice solo as well as Avery Sommers singing "24 Hours of Lovin':.
Gary Sandy and Rob Donohue are also fine in less flashy roles.
Perhaps it is a production that is better seen than heard.

    This alblum was one of the most difficult alblum to track down in the United States.I had to order this alblum and wait 2 months for it.I own the first two and this one.I feel that Four The Hard Way is far better than the first 2 alblum's.You can listen to this alblum from start to finish and not be disappointed.Good alblum to reminiscent about the good ole days in high school.Excellent alblum to buy.

    This was the band's first full-blown rock album in 8 years. The other two, 1993's "Cockroach" was shelved and 1995's "Dawn" I hear was slowed down.

    All the songs on here rock, this cd is an absolute jam! Has the perfect mix of ballads, rockers and mid-tempo stuff. Paul Laine, the singer, really puts emotion into these songs. Very good, considering he only wrote about half the disc. "Sick little twisted mind" and "The Girl ain't built to sleep alone" are highlights with creeping guitar and a darker voice spewing party rock lyrics.

    Although a little different from their first two albums, I think this album is the best they have done. I felt a little dissapointed about their previous album 'dawn' because it was a good album but very inferior to the first and second ones. 4 the hard way is different from all of them, the band remains with just two of their original members, the new music and the new vocalist would never make you guess is danger danger the group you are hearing, even if they include a new version of Comin' home. The songs i like the most in this album are jaded, i don't need you, Goin' all the way, and above all of them, heartbreak suicide. Paul Laine is very good at vocals, I'm amazed. I've heard some people that preferred Ted Poley but I don't.

    Found this in a record shop in Birmingham, did not even know they were still going, by far their best album, I would recommend it to anyone.

          I waited and waited for the price to go down but finally gave up and paid over list. Then the price went down after a year of waiting but I had to have this CD. It's great but if you don't like Bon Jovi, don't get it. A couple of songs sounds like John Bon Jovi. Every song was great. I paid over 27 bucks but I like D2, what can I say?

          5 out of 5 stars 1997 : D2 Back To Their Style.......2005-01-08

          After unreleased gem COCKROACH and modern flavored DAWN which became a failure, Danger Danger finally made what they should be doing. Fourth album is surprisingly great and it is quite regrettable that only a few rock fans can ever listen to this masterpiece. It is no doubt one of the finest rock albums in 1997. With the exception of SIX LITTLE TWISTED MIND derived from discarded COCKROACH, the songs included are upbeat somewhat like Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Goo Goo Dolls, Cheap Trick and Aerosmith, mainstream American pop rock. CAPTAIN BRING ME DOWN, AFRAID OF LOVE and JADED are my favorites. In a way it is more catchy than the next one and their best effort THE RETURN OF GREAT GUILDERSLEEVES. Only thing they need is more label support and I hope they will be back big commercially in near future.

          Back in my college days in the early 90s, I had D2's self-titled, and Screw It CDs and thought they were pretty great. Since those days, I had gotten away from listening to hard rock much. Just lately I've had the itch to start listening to some of those bands again, and one of the albums I tried is "Four the Hard Way".

          To be honest, I really wasn't expecting much from this album, but after a couple listens I was very pleasantly surprised. Sure there are a few songs that don't really rank for me in the upper echelon of Danger Danger tunes, but hey, that's true of every band, isn't it? Can't love everything. But frankly, there are a couple of songs on here that I believe are better than anything from any of the first two albums.

          "The Girl Ain't Built to Sleep Alone": if you heard this one on the radio, you would swear that it was Bon Jovi. And I mean that as a compliment. This is a great melodic rock song. I played it for my wife cause I thought she'd like it, and I asked her to guess who it was. Right off the bat she said Bon Jovi and thought it was some great new song of theirs that she hadn't heard.

          "Heartbreak Suicide" is just a great melodic rock song. Kind of reminiscent of Cheap Trick if you really pay attention to it. Nothing wrong with that! I'd say 6 of the 10 new songs (#11 is an acoustic remake of Comin' Home from the Screw It album) are keepers.

          Paul Laine is an improvement, I believe over Ted Poley, who I always felt was a bit of a whiny, weak singer. Yes, he sings well and hits the notes, but there's nothing past that. Paul Laine definitely has some power in his voice, not to mention has songwriting and guitar skills as well. The majority of the songs are written by Bruno Ravel and Steve West, as they have been from the beginning, so you know that there will at least be a winner or two in the bunch.

          This certainly isn't a waste of money, and is a fairly strong album. Some of the reviews mention an alternative sound to the album...truthfully, I don't hear it. When you've got the two main songwriters still in the group, the sound isn't going to change that much, and it still sounds like Danger Danger to these trained ears. In fact, it's made me go out and get "Dawn" and "Return of the Great Gildersleeves" as well, which I'll be curious to hear since they're slightly newer albums.

          So, if you're looking to try something that you may not have heard yet, take a chance on this album. You'll certainly find something you like about it if you like Danger Danger at all already!

          When I first listned to this album I thought due to the loss of Ted Poley it would be pretty poor but I was happily mistaken. Paul Lane has a outstanding strong voice and the songs are VERY catchy and extremely well written. As an avid Danger Danger and Ted Poley fan, I found this album just as good as all of Danger Danger's other ones. If you like Danger Danger, Bon Jovi, Poison, etc then ignore any bad reviews about this album because its in exactly the same league as the others. 'Jaded', 'Goin' Goin' Gone' and 'Captain Bring me Down' stand out as a few of the most catchy and well written songs on the album.
          A great piece of work.

          1 out of 5 stars Yet, another comeback failure........2001-05-16

          When I first bought this album, I noticed that Ted Poley was no longer singing for this band, and that Paul Laine replaced him. At first I didn't think it was gonna be that bad, because I have Paul Laine's solo album "Stick it in Your Ear" and it kind of reminds me of early Danger Danger at times. So therefore, I expected a killer new release. Right? WRONG! This album is an absolute failure in all aspects! It sounds like they tried to cross melodic rock with alternative, and they don't go well together at all! I don't why the melodic rock critics give this album such a good review, because this album just isn't good enough to be considered a classic.

          The one thing I've gotten sick and tired of, is that some of the greatest short-lived rock bands of the late 80s early 90s have been attempting comeback albums, but do not stick to they're original style. I've told this to Vixen (in 98), Dokken (in 95), Def Leppard (in 96), Lynch Mob (in 99) and now I say it to Danger Danger: If you want to make a comeback, stick to your roots!

          The main point concerning this album is the definite progression that Anthony B is showing in his lyrical ability. He was the first Bobo Dread to bust and since Kalonji and Capleton have overtaken him in both poularity and actual Skill Anthony B by comparison is now seriously working on closing the gaps. And he shows marvelous skill on this album (and another similar album called Five Deciples, (everyone here plus Junior Kelly)checkhis Come Fa which is his best effort here, i also really like his Storm is Over.
          All that being said the Prophet and certainly Sizzla are not standing still waiting on Anthony B to catch up to them. Capleton doesn't serve up his best here with repeating lyrics that ultimately became the base for the tune Search Fi A Find on 2 different cuts, that being said, Bun Out is amazing and the weird sounding Overtime Bomb is pretty good too, Overtime is weird sounding because its riddim is the 'riddim' for the legendary Al Green's Love & Happiness, although Capleton's lyrics are not as good as they can be on that one. Also, although I'm not a fan at all of Luciano, his tune Poor and Simple is very very good. And Sizzla, as usual rules supreme 'pon this one with his excellent Mind Over Matter and the even better, lyrically perfect Swallowfield. Overall, I say this one would probably be best for the uninitiated, if you're not a fan of rastafarian music, perhaps starting here might be best for you, seasoned vets need not apply.

          Danger still has it. New front man and all. Still feels like dangers old stuff with a 90's meets bon jovi feel. I loved it. Definitly worth picking this one up.
