Ever since I first heard Javelin, I have looked for more recordings of Michael Torke's music. I resisted old recordings offered at a very high price after some effort and was delighted to find this collection containing a wide perspective of his work ranging from the color pieces (Green, Cool Blue Music, Ecstatic Orange) to the vocal Proverbs to the utilitarian tool music. Don't miss it.

    From listening to this 1994 solo effort it is plain as day that John Wetton did not intend to break new ground, or experiment in any way, shape or form. Furthermore it is unmistakable that the former King Crimson/UK/Asia lead vocalist/bass player had lost none of his edge, neither in the quality of his songwriting nor in the manner in which these songs are performed. In fact, when considering all of the albums he has been involved in making, i would say that "Voice mail" a.k.a. "Battle lines" may very well be the pinnacle of his career as a recording artist.

    John Wetton's forceful, hallmark voice with its inherent flair for the dramatic will unavoidably evoke memories of Asia, the band that people presumably will be most familiar with. As such it is useful reference material. "Voice mail" is not nearly as bombastic or over the top as Asia's (in)famous debut, although not as ballad oriented and unadventurous as "Alpha". In comparison to the overblown "Astra" its songs are more compact, enriching the AOR/melodic rock approach of "Aria" with an unparalleled clarity of sound, thanks to a superb, precise production by Ron Nevison (and mix by Chris Lord-Alge). (While "AOR" and "a commercial sound" are believed to be mutually exclusive, or even a contradiction in terms, "Voice mail" may be one of those exceptions for which both do apply.)

    Supporting John Wetton (bass, acoustic guitar, keyboards) on this album are an extraordinary group of renowned guest musicians and assorted artistic talent. Six tracks were composed together with Bob Marlette, who was also responsible for additional keyboards (along with a.o. Claude Gaudette), grand piano (along with Robbie Buchanan) and synthesizer programming. Among the remaining contributing composers were Bob Mitchell, Bruce Turgon and Simon Phillips (also on drums). Michael Landau and Steve Lukather can be heard on guitars, as can former King Crimson colleague Robert Fripp.

    There is an incredible fluency about the songs on "Voice mail", as if the music almost wrote itself. The melodies flow to perfection, every note seemingly in its proper place. Each of the 10 tracks will measure up to the harshest scrutiny. If i were to rate them individually, the "weakest" song on the album would not concede more than half a point to the strongest. Due to this remarkable consistency, it may prove a difficult task to select the greatest tracks, since all of them are such obvious winners. Off the top of my head i would say that "Battle lines" (theme song to the "Chasing the deer" movie soundtrack), "Jane" (with its pumping keyboards), the melodramatic "Crime of passion", "Sand in my hand" and the formidable "Space and time" (co-written by Survivor's Jim Peterik) are the pick of the bunch.

    But i'll gladly leave it up to you to choose your own. Asia fans around the world (and i ain't talkin' Carrera !) need not think twice before adding "Voice mail"/"Battle lines" to their collection. Everyone else would be wise to follow their example.

    You might also wanna look for Martin Darvill's "Greatest show on earth" CD with a significant John Wetton guest appearance.

    4 out of 5 stars The Heat Goes On..........2000-07-26

    If you're like me, you weren't terribly familiar with the previous work of the founding members of ASIA, especially bassist/vocalist John Wetton. One listen to this, Wetton's first post-ASIA solo disc, will show just how important he was to the sound that was ASIA. "Voice Mail" (released elsewhere as "Battle Lines") could easily have been the next ASIA album after "Astra." The songs here are tasty, adult rock-n-roll. No pandering to the teens, thank you very much. Wetton's songs are personal and powerful. Highlights include the heartbreaking Hold Me Now, the ASIA-ish Jane, the hopeful Battle Lines, Sea of Mercy, Sand In My Hand...aw, heck, the whole album is wonderful. If you enjoyed the first ASIA albums, or are just looking for some good, mature album-oriented rock, you can't do much better. You've got "Mail!"

    5 out of 5 stars Haunting Renaissance music.......2006-07-03

    I saw a performance by the Globe Theatre that included a wonderful 5-piece English Renaissance musical ensemble. I went looking for some music like that --- music that included viols, lute, wind, reed, and percussion instruments. The particular sound wasn't easy to find, despite a plethora of English Renaissance CDs. This album of Spanish music from the 15th and 16th centuries actually came closer to the sound I was looking for. It alternates between haunting minor key melodies --- pavanes and the like --- and faster, livlier dance tunes. They're a wind ensemble, but there's actually a tune for solo lute. A lot of variety in a memorable and reasonably priced CD. I highly recommend it. (Although I hope Piffaro will consider recording a CD of English Renaissance music!)

    'Los Ministriles, Spanish Renaissance Wind Music' is, I believe, the Philadelphia band, Piffaro's second or third album and I really find it more enjoyable than their parallel album on Italian Rennaissance music. The instruments are virtually identical, with a fair mix of stringed instruments added to round out the sound, but I really enjoyed the overall listening experience more. So, if you are unfamiliar with this band, get this album before the Italian or French albums.

    This is an interesting contrast to the works of Begona Olavide and the Eduardo Paniagua Group' of which Olavide is a member. This Spanish group specializes in Medieval and Renaissance stringed instruments. And, from a purely subjective reaction, I prefer their work to Piffaro. I also think their scholarship is more interesting, but then, they are all Spanish, and Spanish specialists, so that is to be expected.

    The visceral preference may be the only one worth banking on.

    Worth the money, Olavide and Paniagua may be greater value.

    A magnificent recording with enthralling melodies that will lift up your spirits. The bagpipes and flute pieces are simply wonderful. In quality, variety and every other aspect, Los Ministriles is certainly comparable to "Sinners and Saints", the great amazon.com Renaissance dance music favorite, the only difference being that this CD only contains instrumental music (no songs).

    It is just too bad very few people are aware of it.

    Samual Barber wrote some of the most plaintive music ever and this incredible group exploits that talent to it's most beautiful potential. Just an incredibly beautiful sound that gets inside your head and haunts you with beautiful harmony and classically exquisite articulation.
