Amazon.com essential recording
Pulling out all the Nashville stops, k.d. lang's 1988 album is a meticulously crafted work, her bid for mainstream country acceptance, and an homage to her idol Patsy Cline. Surrounded by the brilliance of Owen Bradley's string-laced production and a host of legendary pickers (Buddy Emmons and Pete Wade) and singers (Kitty Wells, Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn), lang's voice soars and moans like a dove. After the lush Chris Isaak-penned opener "Western Stars," lang follows with more-familiar country writers, from Roger Miller ("Lock, Stock and Teardrops") to Harlan Howard ("I'm Down to My Last Cigarette"). Both a commercial (the album went gold) and artistic success, Shadowland ranks as one of the best country records of the 1980s. --Roy Francis Kasten

One of k.d.'s best!.......2007-04-16
I am a huge k.d. lang fan, and I consider Shadowland a real masterpiece of music. I love it when it first came out, and I love it still. If you're a fan and you don't have Shadowland in your collection, you're missing out!
k. d. Lang at her best.......2007-01-10
This is my "go to" album when the mood requires gentle music with a bit of "twang". k. d. is in great voice in this early recording. That was when you could hear the star quality just resonating through every word. While I think highly of all of her early country recordings, I maintain that this is the best (some would argue for Absolute torch and Twang). Her later efforts become a bit too relevant and forlorn for me. It's difficult to single out any one song as the best...it really depends on what mood you're in. Certainly Shadowland stands out and I love the medley with the "old timers' at the end. Interestingly, I'm not a country music fan. Just a fan of great singing. K.d. is one of the best. I highly recommend this recording
Beautiful Music.......2007-01-09
Her voice is at its best on this, and the selection of music is a delight. I've owned this for years and recently purchased it as a gift. The recipient tells me he loves it as much as I do.
Country music for pop lovers.......2006-05-22
This is KD Lang's tribute to Patsy Cline. Lang has a greater range than Cline, though I think that Cline still outdoes Lang in stirring the emotions of the listener. But the album is well-crafted, well-sung and I find it hard to imagine that anyone who likes music would not enjoy this album. I have listened to it probably 200 times over the past ten years and never tire of it.
My favorite track on this is "Shadowland" . . . try singing along with it . . . it's impossible. Lang is one of those artists, like Sinatra, who can nuance a song in a completely unique and untouchable way.
Of all the KD Lang discs I own (I have Ingenue, her greatest hits record, and All You Can Eat), this one has the most universal appeal.
Absolute Perfection!!!!.......2005-08-23
This may very well be the finest CD I have ever come across. kd shows absolute perfection on every note in every song. I have extra copies so I can have one in the car, one by the hot tub and one in the family room - just in case. What a superb voice!!! This is what singing is really all about.

5 star review.......2006-04-15
This album deserves 5 stars, because of the excellent, well crafted songs. Fans of both classic metal (Iron Maiden, Manowar) and power metal (Edguy, Rhapsody) will enjoy this
Shadowland!!.......2006-04-15
I like Nocturnal Rites. They are a power metal band with lots of Symphonic touches. This album is really good, with stand out songs such as Birth Of Chaos, Vengence and Eyes of the Dead. Recommended to fans of Nightwish, Helloween, Stratovarius, Edguy etc
Not better than Afterlife my a**!!!.......2003-10-12
First of all I'm a die hard power metal fan,and I'd like to say that Nocturnal Rites has never! ever! written a bad song,EVER!unlike the over rated Symphony X.People will tell you Symphony X,and sometimes Dreamtheater, are the best, and to throw away you'r Power metal album's.And for the love of God don't, I'm here to tell you,if you like boring, slow,Ultra progressive, overly Dramatic, put you to sleep music, while at the same time giving you only about two fast song's, A.K.A the two token Power metal song's, on a 13 song album,(I'm speaking of course about the New Mythology suite by Symphony X),and just about anything from Dreamtheater.By all mean's don't listen to Power metal, you might actually stay awake. And no though's slow jazzy beat's, don't impress me, at all.But I will recommend Adagio- The sanctus Ignis Album, it actually has a little speed to it.Not to mention to me sound's better than anything Symphony X has came up with as a band. Now that I've said my piece about that why don't the Symphony X fan's tell the truth about why they don't like this album. It's really because the new singer sing's high, and that's really probably the only reason they don't like the new Nocturnal Rites. So cut the B.S.Now as for me I like this singer, and the old singer, they are both AMAZING.This group has a great solid song structure's,they're not all that fast, but they won't put you to sleep either. They're a guitar driven band, with a drummer that is capable of playing fast Power metal stuff if he had to.And if you don't believe me listen to the song Vengence off this album Shadowland. Although I also love the album Afterlife, along with every song on it.I still like this album Shadowland just a little bit more, but not by much.I like Johnny Linquist's vocal's better on this album,it just sound's more natural, and the song's are less morbid too,the other album kind of remind's me of the band Nevermore, which isn't bad, but I think after doing the more Epic and Fantasy style in the past, that they wanted to go with a more Dark and Industrial style on Afterlife. And Shadowland is a little of both.I think the Epic and fantasy style fan's might prove more loyal in the long run.but who know's.I still couldn't give either album less than a five.Heak, even their slow song's like the song Invincible, are AMAZING!!!And I think their giutar solo's are great also, they're not short at all, unless you like them so long you forget what song you're listening to.I don't think they're any shorter than Stratovarious's or Sonata Arctica's,in some way's they're longer just because they don't use their keyboardist as much...Well anyway's, I highly recommend this band to fan's of flat out good music...Whether it be Power metal, plain old traditional metal like the band O.Z.,Epic Fantasy Metal,Speed Hardcore, or all of the above...BUY THIS ALBUM,,,YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!Unless ofcoarse you have something against high pitch vocal's.I used to,but I'm proud to say that unless you sound off key, it doesn't bother me anymore....
Very little improvement from Afterlife.......2003-02-12
Afterlife was the album that got me into NR in the first place when it came out. I heard Sinner's Cross on a sampler and decided to buy the album. I thought it was pretty good and then I heard In a Time of Blood and Fire, and Tales of Mystery and Imagination and was really impressed. Shadowland goes a little bit more in the direction of their old stuff, with more melodies and solos. You still don't get that rush that you should get from power metal though. Invincible and Underworld are very catchy but this album isnt enough to turn me into a die-hard NR fan. Helloween and Stormwitch are the masters of the genre.
Shadowland is weak!.......2002-10-26
I've heard good things about this disc, but it came off weak and uninspired to me. Not too mention I don't care for the vocalist, lack of intersting time changes, and the guitar solos interludes are just too damn short. If you want kick-ass power/prog get Wuthering Heights' To Travel Evermore or Symphony X's The Odyssey. These two bands have REAL metal chops!

Call it good.......2005-12-26
Fate Fatal and crew are famous for their live shows. This is one of their best albums to date (I own them all).
If you're a fan of D.I.Y bands, Psycobilly, Gothabilly, Punk or what ever you'll find something you like in the Deep Eynde.
Great new music.......2005-01-25
I am 58 years old. Recently I was subjected to a CD for a Goth type band. Imagine my pleasant surprise when it had actual MUSIC on it! These kids are great. Their music is interesting and combines elements of several genres into a collection that crosses generational lines. Something for everyone here. I am online to buy it for my own collection!
It's got a good beat and you can dance to it!.......2004-12-15
Deep Eynde is an awesome band to watch live, and this cd is neato van beato. Kind of like the Misfits, but not trying to be like a cover band. They have their own sound that it's hard to classify them only in alternative and punk. My favorite song is the first one, "Suicide Drive". Can't wait until their next album comes out.

Customer Reviews:
Exellent Shadowland debut!!! Melodic, paranoid, and angst ridden Prog Rock........2006-01-26
Ring Of Roses is the exellent first release by Shadowland. Formed in 1992 by Pendragon keyboard player Clive Nolan, Threshold guitar player Karl Groom, Janison Edge bass player Ian Salmon, (who is the current bass player for Clive's other awesome band, Arena,) and Threshold drummer Nick Harradence. Often lumped together with other Prog bands of the time, Shadowland is different. The songs on this album are sometimes melodic, moving, and moody. Other times they are filled with dark paranoia, angst, self reflection and about literately falling apart. There are a few upbeat moments on this album, but not many. The band shine on the longer tracks, Jigsaw and Hall Of Mirrors. These are my favorites. Scared Of The Dark is strait on paranoia, while the instrumental, The Kruhulick Syndrome, is awesome. The Whistleblower and Painting By Numbers are the lighter moments on this cd. The last song, Ring Of Roses, closes out the cd on a nice note. All in all, a fantastic progressive rock album. Clive Nolan wrote all the music and lyrics on this first venture. He's also the lead singer, which some people seem to have a problem with. His voice is different that the usual Prog singers. This is refreshing. He has a dark delivery that seems to fit this kind of music. If you are looking for something different in Prog Rock, then check out Shadowland!!!

Alternative pop rock early 90s.......2003-07-23
I have the original record since 1991, it's an excelent band.
All the music are like a god rock acid pop. And early brit pop group that I don't know much. But if you like the rock pop music, like marilion, U2, R.E.M., or more recintly Oasis or The Verve you must hear this record, cuz it's betwin these sounds.
If you know more about this ameizing grup, please write about it.

This CD is truly Romantic R&B with a jazzy overtone. It is a melodious blend of song, style, and substance. The vocals are rich and sensual. The lyrics are warm and seductive. The music is one outstanding groove after another. If you do like this CD it's because you have not heard this CD. This is GOOD STUFF.
