1 out of 5 stars no buy for this album.......2007-03-30

save your money.

only 2 tracks worth listening to... ie. lovesorrow and de santiago.
the instrumentation for those 2 tracks could've been a lot more emotive if the arrangements werent so plain.

as for the fast tracks... nothing groundbreaking from this guitar player who was groundbreaking back in the early 80s. some of the tracks sound like he's playing catch up with nu metal.

save your money for something better... oh and with regards to the new album - loudspeaker... DISMAL.

3 out of 5 stars Decent .......2006-01-31

Music For Speeding is a pretty good album. I saw many great reviews of this album and even listened to the clips available online. Unfortunately, once I recieved it and listened to it I was disappointed because of by the hype. This is a great album but don't expect megadeth, althought his style does sound very similar often times.

5 out of 5 stars Going beyond stereotypical shred..........2005-10-07

I personally think this album is a great introduction to Marty Friedman, it successfully displays his new influences in his rhythm playing which is much more rock based than his metal works in the early 90s, but yet he still clearly has that vintage soloing style from the 90s, my favorite part about Marty's guitar work. Going from rockers practically made for driving to, to peaceful ballads, Marty displays more diversity than any "shredder" has ever gone through. Any fan of rock in general should check out this album, featuring highlights such as "Gimme A Dose", "Ripped", and "Lust For Life".

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-08-24

5 Stars, YES..buy it! Every rock guitar fan should own this.

Comparing guitarists is pointless, there are so many good players and im not dogging anyone but if a guy who has basically made the same album for 20 years(Satriani)has hit the big time, then Marty should as well.

Ive followed Marty since Cacophony, and he has evolved and matured with every album. This is one of the most well rounded, well done guitar albums ive ever heard. Its angry, its beautiful, its soulful and it rocks! Let Steve Vai keep trying to paint different moods and emotions, Marty pulls it off. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Marty Friedman can always be depended on to please you (or rather, me).......2005-10-25

In 'Music for speeding,' Marty is impressive throughout the album, but doesn't have `memorable' solos. This however is typical of his other solo albums anyway. In his solo albums, it's not brilliant leads really but brilliant melodies and compositions that are praiseworthy. Of course, there are great leads throughout, but not in as defined a way as the solo of say, `Tornado of souls' is great.

Here's my song-by-song assessment:

Gimme a dose - I like the main melody, it's catchy and heavy, totally Marty.

Fuel injection stingray - Another catchy and heavy riff. The heavy things in this CD, still wouldn't be approved by Mustaine were they submitted to be used for Megadeth songs.

Ripped - Not one of the more memorable pieces, but cool leads, in the vein of 'Espionage.'

It's the unreal thing - I've been familiar with this piece for awhile, because I recorded a crappy version of it from the streaming audio two years ago. And Marty played it in front of me. It's cool I guess, but heavy stuff is usually not that appealing to me.

Cheer girl rampage - Crazy leads over a super-poppy melody. Destined to be one of my favorites.

Lust for life - The first of the pieces that make this CD really worth buying: the ballads. Marty also played this in front of me, and I've been familiar with it since before.

Lovesorrow - Probably the piece I'm most familiar with, and the only one that I had a decent MP3 of before I bought the CD. I like it, but have become familiar with it already. Beautiful tone as always.

Nastymachine - The first thing I ever heard Marty play live. I love the dance groove thing with utterly heavy leads, and a sweet Oriental melody in between everything. Go Marty!

Catfight - Cool shredding.

Transistor - The most filler material in the album, being a bonus in the first place.

Corazon de Santiago - Have also been familiar with this for a while. Cool! I'm glad there are plenty of ballads in this CD.

0-7-2 - I wish Marty actually played this on guitar instead of MIDI-ing it all. I saw a bootleg Osaka video of Megadeth, dated May 22, 1995, and Marty played this melody. I've always found it beautiful, but wish it were done more Orientally for this recording.

Salt in the wound - Cool heavy stuff. I like the title.

Novocaine kiss - Great stuff. Serene and everything. I love the chord progression done so simply. Has a slight Kitaro-ness to it, with the guitar-ish keyboards by Brian Becvar. Marty is so cool!

Thais - The bonus track that is probably my favorite piece from the CD right now. I love the various guitar tones used one after the other. And I'm glad it's a bonus track that isn't filler, like `Transistor' is.

I heard Marty is recording his new solo CD, plus doing stuff for Aikawa Nanase's album. That's so cool. I'd be hard-pressed to choose in a current-Megadeth-or-current-Marty battle, but I'm just glad I can hear both Dave and Marty as they pursued different directions!

If I were to guess what rank 'Music for Speeding' would place next to 'Dragon's kiss,' 'Scenes,' 'Introduction' and 'True obsessions,' I'd say that it would be right in the middle, or maybe tying with 'True obsessions' for the second spot. 'Scenes' of course is on top. But my guess is for when I'm all familiar with the CD and everything, so my guess couldn't really be taken seriously.

But still, it has everything. Lottsa shred (which isn't that big a factor to me anyway), fun poppy stuff, exotic sounding stuff, and lottsa ballads! Yet to be treasured to a greater degree, I suspect.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Marty Friedman solo album EVER made! A+++.......2003-09-22

This album is almost AS LOUD AS his previous solo albums: "Dragon's Kiss" & "True Obsessions", but with a very high quality recording! If you love Megadeth's recording quality, then you will love this one! The music is also SO FRESH & MODERN!

    If you're:
    1. A Megadeth fans... you will love "Salt In The Wound", "Cat Fight", "Full Injection Stingray" (Racing Car music) & "Gimme A Dose".
    2. A Cacophony/Jason Becker (fast/insane shred) fans... you will love: "0-7-2" (Classical, arpeggio stuff) & Ripped".
    3. If you love Marty's romantic/beautiful music (like Scenes or Introduction album), then you should love: "Love Sorrow", "Lust For Life", "Novacaine Kiss" & "Corazon De Santiago" (bluesy track).

You will find Marty's NEW MUSIC on these tracks: "Cheer Rampage Girl, It's The Unrealthing & Nasty Machine. Others said that Marty did not make ANY new music, that's NOT TRUE! :(

For me, "Love Sorrow" is the best instrumental that Marty ever wrote! Very thematic! It's even better than "Thunder March" or "Arrival"!

Marty made this album for almost 7 years!!! I found so many improvement in this musicality. "Music For Speeding" is his BEST SOLO ALBUM ever! You won't believe it until you buy it! SO BUY IT NOW! You will not be disappointed at all! :)

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-05-07

Simply a great guitar masterpiece. Marty really excels himself putting some of the best stuff from previous albums and some new (very) cool stuff. Suprising and amazing in every way.

      Album Description

"Theme Composed by Jerry Goldsmith" Jericho was a WWII adventure series following three Allied specialists on secret missions throughout Europe. The theme and second episode were scored by Jerry Goldsmith in his military-suspense mode, replacing a theme by Lalo Schifrin who had scored the pilot. Goldsmith's theme and complete episode score are included on this CD, as are Schifrin's unused theme and a suite from his pilot score, significantly foreshadowing his music to Mission: Impossible. The remainder of Jericho was scored by Morton Stevens, Gerald Fried and Richard Shores, and suites from all of their episodes are included. The music recalls the style of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. but perhaps more grim. "Music Composed and Conducted by Johnny Williams" The Ghostbreaker was a one-hour pilot starring Kerwin Mathews as a parapsychologist investigator; although foreshadowing such television series as Kolchak: The Night Staker and The X-Files, it did not proceed to a series. The theme and pilot score to The Ghostbreaker were by none other than John (then "Johnny") Williams, who wrote a dynamite theme that compares favorably to his TV work for Irwin Allen, and a creepy score including harpsichord and solo soprano. The totality of Williams's score is included here -- a forgotten jewel by one of the world's most famous composers.
