4 out of 5 stars More than just a shred-fest.......2006-10-28

1990's Area 54 was the third (and final) album from Apocrypha, who released a string of very solid power metal albums along the lines of Helstar and Malice. It was released on the Shrapnel label, so you know there is going to be plenty of guitar wizardry on the album. Apocrypha was more than just an excuse for a shred artist Tony Friedanelli to strut his stuff though. You don't have to be a Malmsteen disciple to enjoy Area 54. Fans of quality American power metal should find plenty to enjoy in this album, including well written songs, killer vocals, and yes, some seriously impressive guitar solos. The riffs are speedy enough to appeal to most thrash fans as well.

The best way to describe "Apocrypha" would be Judas Priest style with better guitar. They put out three albums under Shrapnel records (who specialize in great guitar albums). 'Area 54' is the last release before their break up. The discography goes, 1987 'The Forgotten Scroll,' then 'The Eyes Of Time' in 1988, and lastly 'Area 54' in 1990. The mastery guitar is compliments of Tony Fredianelli (who recorded a solo album, 'Breakneck Speed' in 1993, and (for better or worse) joined "Third Eye Blind" in 2000.

The tracklist for 'Area 54':

Album Description

London-based Area 54 was formed in 1997 by frontman Lakis Kyriacou. The band sits solidly in the melodic metal arena, drawing heavily on influences such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Megadeth. What makes them stand out from the crowd is the overall freshness of their sound. They inject just enough modern metal attitude and groove to really have the potential to break into the mainstream. While holding true to their metal roots, their accessibility can't be denied. Area 54's debut album No Visible Scars falls into the traditional melodic metal category. Voted as the runner-up in the "Best New Band" category of the 2000 Metal Hammer's readers poll (second only to Slipknot), Area 54 is a group to watch. Dream Catcher. 2000.

5 out of 5 stars BEST ALBUM THIS SIDE OF THE MILLENNIUM.......2000-05-15

This album is the best I've heard in a long time. You See The Light, Where to Hide (Suicide),...And The Last Embrace are my favourite on this album, but every song is really good on here and is different to a lot of the stuff you will hear in today's music. It is a refreshing change to all the nu-metal out there. Area 54 have got the guts to stick with the more traditional metal but with more of an edge. I'm confident everyone will love this album even if you are not really into rock music.
