Melodic Rock at its best!.......2007-02-14

For fans of Journey/Survivor, you will love this CD. Kevin Chalfant on vocals and Josh Ramos on guitars produce an album equal to their former band The Storm (which contained former Journey members Gregg Rolie, Steve Smith and Ross Valory). The album's opening track sets the stage for the whole album. My favorite track is Surrender where Chalfant sounds better on the high notes than Steve Perry himself. There are no weak tracks here. Don't bother buying the Japanese import to get the song "Teasin You, Pleasin You" it is terrible. I think this album is Kevin Chalfant's best vocal performance, and definitely the most Steve Perry-like. This is the best album Journey never made.

Waiting for Gregg Rolie.......2001-12-04

Although this album isn't nearly as good as Eye of the Storm, the fact is that I haven't heard anything else released in the last five years that is either, and this is still far superior to anything by Creed, Bush, or any of the other dreck one hears on the radio these days. Rivers of Destiny is reminiscent of Survivor and My Love Will Be There (the best song on the album)really sounds like the Storm, but the critical ingredient missing is the singing, playing and writing of Gregg Rolie. It was the interplay between the two lead vocalists (Rolie and Kevin Chalfant) that really gave the Storm their distinct sound, like Spooky Tooth and early Journey, and although Kevin still sounds great by himself, it is Gregg's absence that is really glaring and prevents this from being a five-star effort. Hopefully he will rejoin Kevin and guitarist Josh Ramos soon. By all means, buy this album if you like Journey or the Storm, but don't stop looking for those two out-of-print Storm albums if you don't have them already, because they're better than this or just about anything Journey ever did.

Enjoyable, but uninspired.......2001-11-03

Kevin Chalfant has put his vocal mark on several projects over the years, Two Fires being his most recent. But while his vocal style is most often compared to Steve Perry, I beg to differ. His singing too often sounds thin and forced, and unlike The Storm's "Eye of the Storm," where the musicianship was foremost, in Two Fires, the vocals are most prominent, and the musicianship, while catchy, is somewhat pedestrian. This is likeable AOR fluff, with some good hooks here and there, but by no means a classic.

I came across this album quite by accident. Since I owned the 707, RTZ, LE MANS, THE STORM albums, I figured: "Why not?".

Besides the ballad "I Believe In You", the rest of the album rocks. Chalfant has a good voice (often borrowing from JOURNEY's Steve Perry inflexions, but I would too if I could!), the guitar sounds of Ramos are ordinary but well played. The genre is very reminisicent of SURVIVOR's enthusiastic style.

There's nothing particularly original on this disc, musically or lyrically, but every song will catch your ear. Like the cover, it's well made but not really creative.

I really enjoyed the whole album, which is rather rare: every song is solid, crafted with care, and even though there's nothing really exciting, it delivers on every aspect.

Because it's on a small record label, it's likely to disappear into history pretty fast: that's too bad, because the radio airwaves could be saturated with this music. Grab it while you can, or you'll be one of those people desperately looking for it in auctions/discontinued bins a year from now (and NOT finding it). If these guys get picked up by a major label, they could be as big as BON JOVI was in the second half of the 80's.

You've been warned! Where there's smoke, there's fire. Make that 2 fires!

Who is Two Fires?.......2000-11-01

Two Fires is the band made up of remaining two members of The Storm. After their second album Eye Of The Storm, legendary rock masterpiece during mid 90s, the group fell apart. By the time Kevin Chalfant set up for the third album, some member rejoined as Journey some went solo and Gregg Rolie main member of the band left the band to pursue his ratin flavored music.(Gregg was one of the members of early Santana). Kevin made an album solely by Josh Ramos and with the help of outstanding session musicians and Jim Peterik(formerly Survivor) as a keyboard.

Gathering lilacs and rarer flowers........2002-08-22

Justice is done to Welsh-born composer, pianist, actor and man of the theatre Ivor Novello in this Naxos CD. The artists who first performed them are heard in 18 items, recorded between 1917 and 1950. Ivor Novello himself is heard in two of them, providing some spoken repartee as he accompanies Edna Best at the piano. Most were recorded in the 1930s. The sound quality is good enough for the lyrics to be clearly heard. They bespeak a long-vanished era, but the music still has charm.

Film buffs can nowadays most easily see Ivor Novello in an Alfred Hitchcock film of 1926, "The Lodger". Actor Jeremy Northam portrayed him in the recent film, "Gosford Park". Ivor Novello starred in his last production, "King's Rhapsody", and died nine days before I saw it in London in March 1951.

Sister Act.......2006-03-30

Cell Mates was another one of the "too tough for pop" rocker chick groups that seemed to be everywhere in the first couple years of the `90s. Like similar artists Saraya, Harlow, Chrissy Steele, Robin Beck, Skew Siskin, and Vixen, Cell Mates' music was pretty straightforward rock & roll that bordered on being AOR. What set the band apart was that it was fronted by attractive twin sisters (Pamela and Paula Mattioli, formerly of Gypsy Queen) who appeared to be all over each other. Something tells me this gimmick would not have gone over as well if Nelson had tried it.

Gimmicks aside, there really isn't anything to set Cell Mates apart from the rest of the pack. Between Two Fires is a pretty basic rock album, and is a bit uneven. The vocals are tough without sounding overly raspy, and seem well suited to this type of music. It is worth picking up if you're into this kind of music, but it's not an album that will ever be considered a "must-have."

Great band, terrible production & sound quality .......2007-02-14

This one is hard to rate. The band gets 5 stars, the sound quality and production get 1 star, hence my score of 3 stars. Kevin Chalfant and Josh Ramos formerly of the Storm return with their second effort under the Two Fires name. Their self-titled debut was melodic rock at its best so I was exicted about this release, only to be greatly disappointed. The production sinks the effort. Nonetheless, the tracks Somewhere Far Away, More Than a Mystery, and The Man I Want To Be are the higlights. Josh Ramos was not happy with the fact that Chalfant brought in a guest guitarist to play on the track Ignition, which then became the name of the album, which may mark the end of their collaborations. Since, Ramos has released a solo album and Chalfant has joined Shooting Star.

Badly produced bubblegum rock.......2005-04-06

I was really disappointed by the production on this album. These days it's possible to deliver a better production on your home PC. Don't waste your money on this album unless you're a die hard fan. It's the worst production I've had the displeasure of encountering. After reading some rave reviews on the net I really looked forward to hearing the album, only to be sorely disappointed. All said this is nothing more than badly produced bubblegum rock.

..Has received a fair few 'negative' reviews for the less than scintillating production and yes, it is underproduced to those ears expecting ( dare I say it ) Storm-style blandness. To these ears the sound has a 'bite' and 'edge' which allied to the superlative melodies & THE voice make this one of the melodic AOR releases of 2002..!!

Really disappointed.......2002-03-21

The production quality is really poor on this CD. If they
had a good production/mix, then I would bump it up to 3-4 stars.
Track #3 is my favorite and you can feel the Survivor influences
on it. The rest is so raw from poor production that it is hard
to really get into. I had high hopes and am very disappointed.
I would recommend "91 Suite" to all lovers of melodic rock. It
is the best CD I have bought in 5 years.

80's Great Rock Survives.......2002-03-15

...By the efforts of Kevin Chalfant and Josh Ramos the remaining two members of the Storm. Although I do not feel it's so great as their debut or legendary Eye of The Storm, they still can rock very nicely. "Ignition" is the nice uptempo opener and truly the reincarnation of prime-time Journey. Fine songs include Somewhere Far Away, You're Bringing Me Down, The Man I Want To Be(my #1 favorite and fit for the lead single). A little bit of my letdown is Jim Peterik songwriting is not as fabulous as it used to be with the exception of The Man I Want To Be and What The Whole World Need To Know. Compared with their self-titled debut it became more like the combination of Kevin Chalfant solo and Survivor/Foreigner styled rock with some influence of Journey. Music became a bit diverse: What The Whole World Need To Know shows Kevin's inclination for Rhythm and Blues and the album's secret track "Rhythm Of The World" is a latin-pop song remnicent a bit of Gloria Estefan.

Timeless songs and production.......2004-12-14

Paul Young has an outstanding blue eyed soul voice. The tracks on this cd are well played, well produced and well written. His bass player is Pino Palladino who is currently performing with the Who. Pino is a real gem all on his own. Together they are unstoppable. More people should know about this recording. PK
