3 out of 5 stars Megadeth delivers an OK album after Two Duds.......2007-07-23

Most will think that Megadeth's 1999 album "Risk" might be their worst album. I happen to think it is more then bad, its just sad. Experimentation is a good thing, but you better make sure that if you are going to do it, then do it right. 2001's "The World Needs a hero" wasnt much better. Three tracks were good, but the rest just seemed like they were in the direction of "Risk" Finally we get to 2004's "The System has Failed" While its not perfect, it certainly picks up a little pace, without so much of the boring drab of the other two releases. Dont get me wrong, being slow can be just as heavy and brutal then being fast. Bolt Throwers newer material proves that, but when it gets to the point when it doesnt even define Hard Rock, and is more on the point of pop, then it just gets me a little bitter. AS I said, there is much less of that on this album, and Four of the tracks (Blackmail the Universe, Kick the Chair, Back in the Day, and My Kingdom) really hit hard. There are another two songs that are OK, nothing special, and the rest just isnt to my liking. So its not a total disaster, which is a good thing, and its still a bit better then the new release "United Abominations" Megadeth has gone in a different direction. Maybe they will suprise me and deliver a full album of outstanding material. Until they do, this will just have to do.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-06-24

Good album... better than their latest "united abominations". After Cryptic writing and Risk this album was most welcome.

5 out of 5 stars The System Has . . . Suceeded!.......2007-06-07

Upon first listen to Megadeth's 2004 release ' The System Has Failed ', it was pretty apparent to me that this was no ordinary Megadeth album. Sure, there are plenty of good old Megadeth touches throughout the album... but claims of this album being the next 'Rust in Peace' were quickly dismissed. It wasn't until multiple listens to this album that i started to really pick up on what Megadeth was offering - a very good Megadeth album, arguably the best in years, with plenty of fresh, modern touches packed with just enough old school 'Deth vibes to keep the people coming back for more. Don't write this album off because it doesn't live up to your expectations of older Megadeth classics like i did at first. Megadeth probably will never release an album outclassing ' Rust in Peace ' or ' Peace Sells ', but that's not to say that they aren't capable of putting out a worthy release like this one.

2 out of 5 stars Boring,.,,.......2007-05-19

4 and a half star average customer rating are you freakin kidding me? Megadeth has got to be one of the softest and the weakest thrash metal bands that exists at the moment bar none. The only reason why Megadeth became popular is because Dave Mustaine used to be in Metallica. This album is in reality a real snoozefest in comparrison to hundreds of other metal bands out there that are blessing the scene today! Definitly avoid this album espicially if your looking for heavy thrash metal, if your looking for heavy thrash metal I suggest Kreator, Testament, Sodom, Destruction, Metal Church,Overkill, and Voivod. Leave this band be unless your looking for really soft metal solos that almost sounds like rock solos.

4 out of 5 stars A solid effort........2007-05-14

I looked through the reviews and read both the negatives and positives. The positives generally say that this album is amazing and the negatives say that it's crap and it should be skipped for Rust in Peace or Countdown to Extinction. I'll agree with both people here...kind of.

While many positives say that this is among Megadeth's best or that it's simply incredible, I won't take it that far. I do think this is a very good CD with it's own gems but it may be a little much to say that it's one of their best.

The negative reviews then say skip it for Countdown or R.I.P. I'll agree, those albums are better and if given the choice between one of those and this, go with those. However, it's not fair to be comparing every CD that a band releases to their classics. What makes those albums good is different from what makes this one good (although not by a huge margin).

To sum up, this is a very good album. I'll agree that if you don't have Rust in Peace or Countdown to Extinction, go ahead and skip this one (for now) until you have at least one of those. If you are totally new to Megadeth go with the greatest hits CD. That way you'll get a feel for Megadeth's music and some songs off their various albums and make a decision on what album (if any) is right for you. If you have a pretty decent Megadeth collection, however, this CD is definitely worth a listen.

A final note: The only major complaint I have about this album is the cover art. On it are likenesses of both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush- politicians Dave Mustaine has admittedly voted for. It smacks of bandwagoning to put people that you vote for on your CD and declare that the system has failed.

And that's it. It may not be a classic Megadeth album but hell, it's good in its own right!

5 out of 5 stars Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland together again!!!.......2007-06-13

Now I don't like when people slag one effort from a particular band than another...Megadeth Purists realize this effort was as close as anyone is going to get to a (Killing/Peace sells) reunion. If you have read any of my reviews, you know I'm a BIG Poland/Mustaine fan. Chris Poland in my opinion is one the greatest guitar players around today. Hands down. He and Dave forged a sound that NO ONE can match. If you haven't heard Polands solo effort ( Return to Metalopolis) or his new band (OHM) buy them! The only thing missing from "The system has failed" yet again was Dave Ellefson. Yup, this would been an amazing record had all the boys been involved. But, it was not meant to be. But, to have Mustaine AND Poland on the same record again was for me, what I had been waiting for!! This is classic MEGADETH, Chris' dream like solos mixed with Mustaines fast [...] fret work...make this an incredible effort. We all know the past between these two has been spotty at best, but they both grew up, buried the hatchet and moved on ( kinda wish Menza would do the same!!).
"Blackmail the universe" is a great track, While "Die dead enough" is krunchy enough not alienate older fans, but commercial enough to attract new fans. "Kick the chair" is a killer track, political revenge! While "The Scorpian" if anyone knows anything about Mustaine, IS about Mustaine..."Tears in a vial" good, but not great, "I know Jack" is fantastic, A big slap in the face to the BUSH legacy..."Something that I'm not!!" good track, "Truth be told" It's OK, kinda filler material to me, "Of mice and men" Anyone who can use a Steinbeck title in a heavy metal song is fine with me, "Shadow of Deth" is a stand out track, a mini instrumental that leads into "My Kingdom" the final track. Great record, like I said, I only wish Ellefson was on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars The last great Megadeth.......2006-12-13

If you are a Megadeth fan who gave up somewhere around Youthanasia, and/or think the last few Megadeth albums have been spongy and weak, BUY THIS ALBUM, because this is the the best release since then. Better than Countdown, no way, on par with Youthanasia? Yeah, mostly. Like Cryptic Writings? You'll like this one too.

5 out of 5 stars Returning to their roots !.......2005-12-08

On this latest release from Megadeth they have returned to a more Rust In Peace sound.

This CD will rock your world if you like Megadeth and Megadeth ALWAYS puts out quality music. This is a more thrash type record any Megadeth fan will ove.

Don't miss out ! Buy it !
