too much of the same.......2007-06-30
This album has some catchy tunes for sure. But the problem is that most of the songs start to meld and sound the same. I understand that each group strives to attain a particular unique sound. But there's nothing new under the sun, everything is just being reinvented. The title track "Move Along" has been so over-played on the radio that anyone would be ready to tune it out after the 200th time it seems you're hearing it. "It Ends Tonight" just comes across as whining and not a great song. After listening to this album, I can't say any particular track especially stands out. To me that would not seem to be a good thing. I think AAR needs to diversify their sound a bit. The lyrics aren't terrible, but nothing spectacular either. I would say this album is just ok. Overall score: 6.7 out of 10.
Excellent Rock Album.......2007-05-25
I am not usually a fan of this genre of rock, but boy am I a fan of this album! Every song has a catchy tune and even catchier (sometimes tongue-in-cheek) lyrics. This is one of those albums that you want to pop into your car, put the top down, and cruise along while singing along at the top of your voice. Exhilaratingly enjoyable music!
amazing!.......2007-05-16
There were few albums that I liked instantly. But "Move Along" is just awesome!
If you don't have it yet, get their first album The All-American Rejects, too! It's just as good!
ALOT OF CRYING.......2007-05-14
I WAS DISAPOINTED IN THIS ALBUM. ESPECIALLY FROM A GOOD BAND SUCH AS THIS. I REALLY ONLY FOUND TWO SONGS ON THE WHOLE CD THAT WERE WORTH PUTTING ON TO MY I-POD "IT ENDS TONIGHT" AND "MOVE ALONG". AS FOR THE OTHER SONGS I THOUGHT THEY WERE VERY "CRY BABY". THEY ALL SOUNDED PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS FOR BEING MAD AT SOME GIRL FOR EITHER DUMPING THEM OR CHEATING ON THEM. SO I WAS DISSAPOINTED TO HEAR ALL THESE WHINNY SONGS.
CD.......2007-03-19
My son loves this CD. I usually dont listen to his music but this was really good!

Picking a primary gripe about Disney's Move It is easy: In the post-Madagascar landscape of 2005, the infectious dance tune "I Like to Move It," first popularized by K.K. Project in 2002, is conspicuously, disappointingly absent. However, birthday-party booty-shakers will have forgotten their allegiance to K.K. Project's song; when Baha Men instruct them in their watered-down way to "Move It Like This." Standbys "Macarana," "U Can't Touch This," "Le Freak," "Kung Fu Fighting," and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" supply Mom ample cause to move it, too. --Tammy La Gorce

After reading the poor reviews for the Kidz Bop cd's, I thought I would try this one instead. I am SOOO glad I did. My boys just love it. I can listen with thenm and actually enjoy it. REal songs by real artists..not a bunch of kids singing! You really can't go wrong with this one.

Former pro surfer Donavon Frankenreiter rides a new wave on his sophomore effort. A change in labels from mentor Jack Johnson's Brushfire to Lost Highway finds the bearded, long-haired, doe-eyed singer/songwriter channeling his inner Talking Book-era Steve Wonder on this occasionally funky and consistently engaging keyboard-dominated album. His dreamy, near-falsetto voice floats through these soulful slices of pop perfection. The low-boil funk and nonchalant vocals sometimes recall Curtis Mayfield or Boz Scaggs in their casual, yet distinctive approach. An offhand natural warmth oozes from this recording that finds the singer and his band tapping an earthy groove. Nothing seems rushed or forced, as the musicians lock into the sunshiny, blue-eyed, melodic R&B vibe. A few more upbeat cuts like the irresistible title track and the riff-driven "That's Too Bad" might have added more supple firepower, but even the ballads connect with a rootsy low-key charm. Frankenreiter hasn't entirely forsaken his tropical beach-boy charm, as shown by the closing "Beautiful Day," but Move by Yourself is a refreshing twist that proves the artist is far more than a surf bum who picked up music to occupy his downtime on a rainy day. --Hal Horowitz
Customer Reviews:
GOOD MELLOW TUNES.......2007-06-28
This is my first Donavan CD and I am in love with the soft mellow tunes that you could just sit and relax to. This will be the first of several cd's that I will purchase by him.
Chill and Funky.......2007-01-20
Chill and Funky... what elese is there to say? Perfect for a sunny afternoon hangin out, driving, relaxing. Donavon keeps getting better and better. Can't wait for the next one.
Good album.......2007-01-20
In my opinion, the most beautiful song is "The way it is" and reminds me Barry White's earlier groovy compositions.
Frankenreiter didn't disappoint.......2007-01-03
This is a bit of the 70's groovy music beat...but his soothing voice still comes through. I liked this one due to his voice and tone, but prefer his more folkish beats in other of his albums.
Awesome!!.......2007-01-01
Love it!!! Can't speak to the technical side like some of the other reviewers but just listening to the album makes me happy, it's nice and mellow and if you love Jack Johnson (like I do) then you will also love this album! Can't wait for more!!!

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06
This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
What can you say - it's Segovia!.......2007-02-10
I saw Segovia perform live in my youth. What a treat! Anyone who loves Classical Guitar should love this collection.
EVERYBODY KNOWS.......2007-01-13
EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).
Immortal guitar.......2006-08-02
Two CD's with Segovia's immortal music - an incredible treat at a great price!
WOW.......2006-02-23
Even though there is hiss from the original analog recordings this one is a must. Segovia! What more can you say. Anyone who likes classical guitar will love this.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Royal Crown Revue were between releases when the short-lived swing revival turned relative newcomers Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy into household names. Originally released in the preresurgence year 1996, this collection finds Eddie Nichols's charismatic crooning and his band's revved-up revivalism in fine form. RCR favorites like "Hey Pachuco!" and "Zip-Gun Bop," which were both featured on the band's 1992 indie debut, are given the widescreen treatment here by Van Halen producer Ted Templeman. Other highlights include a cover of "Beyond the Sea" and "Barflies at the Beach," a wild remake of Louis Prima's "Sing Sing Sing" where Nichols sings the virtues of Flipper-laden tuna and other natural wonders. (Note: "Barflies" was added for this 1998 reissue.) As fate would have it, the band that launched the whole swing resurgence never really profited from its success. But as Nichols's heroes would say, that's show biz. --Bill Forman
Customer Reviews:
Hard-core revival swing.......2007-07-20
Or swing with a sting, that's how I'd describe the Royal Crown Revue. I'd always thought that Squirrel Nut Zippers started the swing revival til someone set me straight. Royal Crown Revue's "Mugzy" is all on the level of the Zipper's "H#ll." (Sorry, Amazon edits out the epithets)
I imagine this would make a good remake soundtrack for movies based on Raymond Chandler's novels. "Zip Gun Bop" even has the cop siren running in the background at the first. Plus, of course, there's the offer for a man to try on a pair of cement shoes and 'walk on water.'
"The Rise and Fall of the Great Mondello" has the feel of the old daredevil circuses. You can almost see the performer falling...
"Beyond the Sea" just blows poor Bobby Darin out of the water. (Pardon the bad pun!)
"Dating with No Dough" is also one of those upbeat, funny hard-luck stories. You've got to laugh, because most of us have been there.
Really no bad songs here. "Mugzy" is one of those CDs you can put on when you need to get moving or cheer up and count on having something good to hear.
Crime Jazz.......2007-06-05
Established in 1989, Royal Crown Revue launched a swing revival that's still going strong and has spawned a host of imitators, from former Stray Cats singer Brian Setzer to the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. But Royal Crown Revue still rules the roost, with entries such as Walk on Fire (1999) and Greetings from Hollywood (2004). Whether you call it the bookish-sounding "neo-swing" or use the moniker supplied by front man singer Eddie Nichols--"hard-boiled swing"--you'll need a chaser after downing this powerful cocktail of swing laced with jive and rockabilly.
The accomplished sextet behind Nichols includes saxophonists Mando Dorame (tenor) and Bill Ungerman (barry), and trumpeter Scott Steen, backed by a rhythm section sharper than a stiletto: James Achor on guitar, Vinny Lepisto on bass, and drummer Daniel Glass. Nichols is, as they used to say, one hep cat: his voice brings to mind both Louies (Jordan and Prima), and the band's work reminds you of the "crime jazz" soundtracks of Elmer Bernstein and Henry Mancini. Listen to this one while reading Mickey Spillane's Kiss Me, Deadly and downing straight shots of Canadian Club.
Their signature tunes "Zip Gun Bop" and "Hey Pachuco!" are already standards in their own right. Their lightning-quick, be-bopping "Park's Place" brings back the best of Dizzy and Bird's jam sessions. Damn! These guys play tight! On "Beyond the Sea," Nichols out-swings and out-swoons Bobby Darin. "Barflies at the Beach"--a send-up of Louis Prima's version of "Sing, Sing, Sing"--closes this outing with a politically incorrect ditty about the delights of eating Charlie the Tuna...with a fin of Flipper thrown in for good measure. Yeah, man!
Swing has never been done better!.......2006-01-05
This is such an awesome band! The lead singer was born to sing swing! You will fall in love with every one of these great tunes! You cannot listen to this great CD without tapping your feet!
The perfect swing album!.......2005-11-19
This was the album that discovered Swing music for my ears. Great sounding, energetic album.
If you want a good introduction to Swing, this is THE perfect album to get. Also check out "The Contender" by Royal Crown Revue, it was their follow up to Mugsy's Move. Great album as well.
I would highly recommend this album.
Oh Man i love this music.......2005-06-08
Simply a brilliantly fun album that shines in the band's musicianship. The group is so together and the songs are well balanced, flowing seamlessly through the changes in the songs that keep you listening and relate as a group of stories that are greta ot listen to and fun to dance to!
A very strong album that is a fun and fresh approach to the best type of music out there- swing baby!

Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Album Description
In just over a year since their debut release, Day Of Fire has accomplished many things most new artists only dream of. They won a Dove Award, were nominated for a Grammy, toured in front of over 500,000 in the U.S. as well as Europe, and made appearances on CNN and 700 Club. When you ask lead singer Joshua Brown what he's learned from all this, it's not about the awards or places they've traveled, but the people they've met. "I want to show people the love of God in action, love people for who they are."
On their sophomore release they reach out through song on topics such as addiction, abuse and abandonment and offers hope in the love of God. "This album is about identifying with the pain and insecurity that we all feel as people and finding hope in the love that is far greater than anything we have ever experienced," says Joshua Brown. "I realize we are all in a desperate and constant need of the love of God." It's this passion for connecting with people and encouraging then that sets Day Of Fire apart.
Produced by Pete Thornton, Cut and Move launches June 6. The band will hit the road this spring with their headlining tour REBORN, then head out this summer playing major festival dates with other touring opportunities in the works for the fall.

Good Cd.......2007-01-13
This cd is a good cd and I would recommend buying it. I have been a Day of Fire fan since they first came out and I cannot decide weather I like this cd or the old one better. The first one was definatly more catchy but this album is better and more complex musicly. It is good but slightly differant than the older album. It is heavier than their old one but not by too much. Their live show really brought this album to life for me so I would recommend seeing them live every oppertunity you get.
A fresh, harder take than Debut.......2006-11-09
First, I loved the first album, but it seemed a little jumpy to me for some reason...great album but it seemed like the syle kept changing. Cut and Move however is simply a straight rock album through and through. I can remember the first time I heard 'Love', the riff was a hook and it immediately got my blood pumping...from there on this CD had my attention.
There are a few erks though, some songs like 'when the light' seem drawn out. And the songs get a little to repititous at times, sticking to the same Verse chorus Verse bridge chorus out formula. As a musician I know how easy it is to fall into this trap but the songs are so fast and intense it really doens't bog it down that much. Another thing that kind of dissapoints me is that lyrically it isn't as Christian as the first. Sure songs like "Hole in my Hand" and "Reborn" are dead giveaways, but I'm just one of those kinds of people who are starving for more 'bold in the word' bands like Disciple.
Some people don't like 'too much spiritualness' in bands but that is what really makes a good Christian band to me. Overall, the CD is a fast, adrenaline pumping rock album and would recommend it to anyone.
Breath of fresh air.......2006-11-04
I have a 200-song playlist on my MP3 player that randomly plays tunes from various bands including Day of Fire, Decyfer Down, RED, and DecembeRadio. As the player churned through the list, some song would come on, and I'd say "wow, that's a great song. who does it?" I'd glance at the artist name, and every time, it was Day of Fire. A great band, and great in concert too.
Just A Good, Solid Rock Album.......2006-10-17
Despite being constantly labeled as a Christian act and as the band of ex-Full Devil Jacket frontman, Josh Brown, many people forget one important thing about Day Of Fire: They simply rock. An engaging voice, meaningful lyrics and accomplished musicianship are what these guys are all about, and their second album, despite being a bit of a departure from the debut, demonstrates this beautifully.
Sounds Like:
The Good:
- The production is tight and Josh's voice is as prominant as ever.
- All ten tracks are worth a listen.
- The album doesn't just appeal to Christians (just ask me!).
The Bad:
- It's kinda short.
- As is the case with many Christian bands, the lyrics can get a bit too preachy at moments.
Hits: "Hole In My Hand" "Love" "Run" and "Wake Me."
Misses: "Reborn," closing out the album on a rather awkward note.
Future: I think this album is just as good as it's predecessor, so it shouldn't alienate too many fans.
Personally: I don't care to mix religion with music, but Day Of Fire do it well so who am I to criticize? I wish they would get more radioplay, as they are one of the more interesting "new" rocks bands.
Best Listened To When: You realize Full Devil Jacket are gone forever.
Not as good as their first album........2006-09-16
The album lacks in variety, many of the tracks are repetitive and the whole album is 32 minutes. Though I wouldn't own this album unless there were some good songs: Especially "Wake Me" and "When The Light". If you want to listen to Day Of Fire, get their first album.

When Dance Music was Dance Music.......2007-06-22
I bought this album a few months ago for the song "Just Another Dream"; it brought back memories of when Dance music was actually music and not the processed, remixed trash that it's *generally* become today. I've found that I like most of this album, most notably "All Night Long (Touch Me)" and "Got To Get Your Love". (I feel that "Too Many Walls" didn't really belong on this album; it seemed very out of place on a dance album) Cathy Dennis is a talented singer/songwriter, and I am grateful to her for turning out one of the best dance albums of the 90's. Any fan of Dance music should give this album a try, if only to hear music one can actually dance to.
LOVE HER VOICE!!!.......2007-01-04
Cathy Dennis has a great voice for Pop Music. This CD is great to have as compilation.
Soulful Dance Diva.......2006-01-06
Awesome, Moving. Cathy confronts the issues of love in an upbeat euphoric and soulful manner, is this for real or "Just Another Dream" and the sexy "Touch Me (All Night Long), the dance hit featuring D Mob "C'mon And Get My Love", the hard to get love ballad of "Too Many Walls", the lost love ballad "Tell Me". the saucy dancefloor classic "Everybody Move", show me a sign of how you feel in "Move To This". The sweet romantic feelings of love in "My Beating Heart", the commitphobic "Got To Get Your Love" and giving love a chance with "Taste My Love".

good songwriter with good music.......2005-12-31
I remember loving the song Touch Me in the 90's and just wrote her off as one of the other europop artists to come and disappear. But then in this decade I heard that she was the songwriter behind Kylie's Can't Get You Out of My Head, Britney Spears Toxic and a track from Janet Jackson's Damita Jo CD called "Island Life". Cathy is a very talented songwriter who has the potential to enhance the dance/pop genre if she continued writing songs for many other artists, or made a comeback herself since dance music is coming back thanks to Madonna with her latest album Confessions on a Dancefloor.
One of the best early '90s albums.......2005-06-07
I bought this album after Touch Me went down on the charts and Too Many Walls would later become the next single in early 1991. Little did I know that this album would be the stepping stone to where she is now as a songwriter and artist. This is a solid dance album all the way with a huge emphasis on melodies and rhythms! I still love C'mon and Get Your Love, Just Another Dream, Touch Me and many of the other funky dance numbers on here. And I hear Too Many Walls a lot in some stores here--it's timeless sound still holds up. Dennis could really pull it off on a much slower, softer song. I think people were drawn to the song's low key, quiet landscapes against the more hyper hip-hop driven songs that it had to compete with on the charts. When I think of Cathy's recent successes with Kylie Minogue's comeback 2001-2002 hit Out of my Head and the endless playing of the catchy American Idol theme song that she co-wrote, I can credit this first album as its influence. A classic '90s album in all its true sense!

the great debut from the brilliant english group.......2001-08-18
this is an excellent debut record that also includes their early singles, outtakes, etc. the move were an incredible band, among the best of their era. these early recordings are a lot poppier than their later excursions into psychedelia, heavy metal, classical rock etc. i think the stuff that they did on shazam, message from the country, etc. is their best, but it is all great. i would probably give both shazam and message from the country an a+, and this debut and looking on an a or a- for a grade, quite simply, this band's entire output is essential. this first album features a few fine covers: moby grape's brilliant 'hey grandma' from their outstanding debut, and 'weekend' by eddie cochran, who was a big influence on this band. there is also a bizarre rendition of the old standard 'zing went the strings of my heart'! , lead vocals are sung by the band's drummer, bev bevan- with his strange deep voicehe sounds like a troll on this cut. the originals are excellent late sixties pop , such as the big hit 'fire brigade', 'here we go round the lemon tree' (which was covered by jeff lynne's fine band the idle race-jeff would, of course, join a later move lineup), 'useless information'( a quite satirical look at junk culture with witty lyrics from roy wood), and cherry blossom clinic, the most psychedelic song on this album- it would be redone on the shazam album with incredible results. the band plays extremely well together, and the move featured several great vocalists , their harmonizing was superb as well. the lyrics are quite good , too and this debut certainly belongs in the collection of fans of this band and the offshoot bands, 60's enthusiasts, and anyone who likes british music of the era.

PSYCHEDELIC POWER-POP at its FINEST!.......2000-01-25
It's hard to be objective here; MOVE as been one of my all-time favorite albums now for over 20 years! The original "super-group" (in the true sense of the word), The Move was made up of 5 of the best musicians from the 4 best (but unsuccessful) bands in Birmingham. Led by writer-producer-multi-instrumentalist ROY WOOD and (early on) lead singer CARL WAYNE, they were extremely popular & successful in England in the late 60's. But they never MADE it in America! Which is a shame, because every song on the disc is a standout. The powerful opener "Yellow Rainbow" (which warns of nuclear fallout & contains some of BEV BEVAN's most exciting drumming); "Kilroy Was Here" (a tribute to graffiti artists); "(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree" (the silly lengths some will go to to impress a girl!); "Weekend" (an Elvis-style rock & roller); "Walk Upon The Water" (please don't drink & drive); "Flowers In The Rain" (a #1 hit in the UK and deservedly so). Even "Zing Went the Strings Of My Heart" (a 1929 song played with a late-50's arrangement-- a double-anachronism-- with a Ted Cassidy-inspired vocal tacked on for really perverse measure!). And on it goes. The Move eventually "evolved" into The Electric Light Orchestra-- and THIS is where it all REALLY started! Amazingly enough, the ELO album this reminds me of the most is OUT OF THE BLUE-- except for the strings being studio musicians.
Since the still-recent 3-CD box set MOVEMENTS, several packages have been released, most with bonus tracks, and this is no exception. But I'd personally recommend the box set, as it has everything from their first 3 albums and more, and the 2 45s "Night Of Fear" (which includes the "1812 Overture" as its base line) & "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" (with more of Bevan's best-ever drumming) are at the beginning where, chronologically, they really belong. And, if this is your thing, I'd also recommend TOMORROW, THE BEST OF MANFRED MANN, THE COMPLETE EPISODE SIX and The Beatles' MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. (Now, when will The Banana Splits be put on CD?)
