Generation Swine has the potential to be visceral and contemporary, and on tracks like "Find Myself" and "Let Us Prey," Motley Crue actually meld metal and industrial into a high-voltage hybrid. But too often, the group lapses into cheeseball melodies and wimpy choruses that undermine its more inventive efforts. And if the band was trying to prove to the world that it's still hungry and forward-thinking, it should have thought twice before including a revamped version of the 14-year-old song "Shout At the Devil." --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Sounds even better now..........2007-01-11

I really liked this CD when it came out, but when I listen to it now I LOVE it. At the time it kind of bothered me that it didn't have that Bob Rock produced sound, but that's one of the things I really appreciate about it now. There's not one weak song in the bunch - even the bonus tracks are killer. If I had to pick favorites I would say "Find Myself", "Generation Swine", "Confessions" and "Let Us Pray". A lot of people have poked fun at Tommy's "Brandon", but if you open your mind, get past the opening, you'll find it's a really beautiful piece that DOES belong on this CD, as it marks that period in the Crue's history. If we ever get another Crue CD I hope this is where they pick up where they left off. Long live Motley Crue!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Crue's Greatest Albums Ever........2007-01-06

First off let me say that this album is purely amazing, it is great because its a reunion tour, and it showcases Motley Crue's talent from all 4 band members. This album really requires your full attention, and an open mind, and you truly have to respect music if your going to like this album. Nikki Sixx - Really show's off his bass talent, and song writing is improved, and he even sings on one songs, and its amazing. Mick Mars - Really show's off his guitar playing on this album, even though he dosen't like this style of music, and the distortion, it sounds great like he really put in all of his effort, and its a shame because he was treated like crap in the studio and his riffs are amazing here. Vince Neil - Show's really how amazing his singing is, and I mean amazing, people say the songs weren't made for his voice, he pulls them off real well with a lower voice. Tommy Lee - Show's off his Singing, Druming, and Songwriting - Writing some of the songs on the album, also show's off his piano. Though the lyrics and music is alot Darker then other albums, the band pulls the darkness off very poetically.

Cd packaging - Comes in hardcover case. 5/5

Inserts - Good, with lyrics, and pics, and its upside down because its Motley like that. 5/5

Cd - Great remaster, with video, and new tracks. 5/5

Songs

Find Myself - Really good opener, show's the drama in the band, and gets it off on a good edge, Even Nikki's Son is a musician in this song. 5/5

Afraid - Another Great song, with great bass opening, and lyrics, and back up music. 5/5

Flush - A great anti suicide song with dramatic riffs. 5/5

Generation Swine - A mix of Grunge and Hair metal the title track is very anthem like, and its great 5/5

Confessions - A great song about how the band is changing there ways very great. 5/5

Beauty - A true beauty of a song, with good industrial metal for a change, although I don't like much industrial this song is great. 5/5

Glitter - A great New age Track Great lyrics by sixx, and a true love song. 5/5

Anybody Out there? - This song started out amazing like classic crue sounding, mixed with Grunge, it was going to be great but its way too short. Deffinently the weak point of the album. 2/5

Let Us Prey - Another good song by this band, very grunge sounding. 5/5

Rocketship - A great song sung by Nikki Sixx for his wife, very creative. 5/5

A Rat Like Me - I don't know why people say this is a throw away track, Anybody Out there is the throw away, not this one, this one is also a mix of hair and grunge. 5/5

Shout at the Devil '97 - A good song, that was probably made so they could see what fans thought of Corabi doing there old songs, but alas Vince came back - not a bad thing, and it still sounds good but now its just filler, its good filler, but still filler. They play this one live, and its really good. 4/5

Brandon - Dedicated to Pam Anderson, and Brandon Lee - Tommy Sings and its great. 5/5

Afraid ( Swine Mix/Jimbo Mix) - It's a tad Distorted, but still good 4/5

Wreck Me ( Unrealeased) - A great track that should have been on the Album 5/5

Kiss The Sky ( unrealeased) Another great Track that should have been on the album.

Rocketship Demo - Not as good as released one. Alot missing. 3/5

Confessions - Tommy sings his voice isn't good on this song. 3/5

Afraid video - 5/5 great video.

So as you can see its not like Most Crue Records, but it's still good. Get it its well worth your buy.

Overall - 4.6 Rounded to 5

This CD is a classic!!!!! So they altered their sound a bit, so what? This and the Corabi CD will never get the props they deserve. The title track should've been the first single. Give it another listen!

1 out of 5 stars Vince Neil May Be Back, But Swine Is A Big Step Back.......2006-07-30

Vince Neil returned for "Generation Swine" in an effort for the Crue to start making some money again. However, the result was a horrible album that showed the band going through the motions in a lame attempt to modernize their sound.

Although mostly uncredited, John Corabi apparently co-wrote many of these songs before he was dismissed from the band. I can only imagine the songs might suit his style more than they did Vince Neil. Die-hard fans might find it interesting to hear Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx singing lead on some tracks, but almost all of the songs are at best lousy.

On a somewhat related note, in the summer of 2006, John Corabi was playing with "Adler's Appetite" and was touring briefly with Vince Neil (solo). One night, Corabi actually saved Vince's show by stepping in to sing Crue songs with his backing band when Vince was too drunk to perform.

2 out of 5 stars she's my beauty they call her miss devine..hmmm not .......2006-02-04

the crue are bak and by the looks of the cover tryin' to make themselves cool again and following the trends of the times like most washed up eighties hair metal bands try[well most haven't got the poodles to wash anymore]
this album generation swines starts off with "find myself" a explict
song that has a decent riff[john corabi's voice would suit it better]
afraid is the lassic track that kicks this half shot album into per-portion.."flush" medium to good half way to bad..
"generation swines" the title track has a certain charm but just doesn't go anywhere
"confessions" some great lyrics and vocal performance
the highlight for me
"beauty" the distorted song that you wouldn't think that motley crue had it in them to pull an album of this quality in their hat
the rest of the five songs suck eggs so no need to descibe how i feel about them
"shout at the devil 97" is abit of an odd ball..why need to re-recorded a song..a bit of a alright
"brandon" the "sentimental" love letter for brandon lee and pamela anderson...that at first listen i thought awww it's cute he wrote a sweet song then after the second listen i though ewww what a cheeseball of a song
what a dreadful way to end a decent album with the crue trying to keep with the trends and failing misery atleast their next album "new tattoo" was an un-define success and bought the crue rocking to a great tune[without tommy lee until the re-union tour were the circus is back on the road]

5 out of 5 stars Neo Crue Is Damn Good.......2004-12-15

Alot of people I know who are Crue fans don't like this album but that's because they are close-minded morons who can't handle change. (Didn't Motley say something about Time for change/Nothing stays the same, anyway)This album is effect-laden and has the tightest grooves Motley ever has had. Sure, it doesn't knock you in the face as hard as their first two albums do but that isn't always a bad thing. If I wanna listen to Shout at the Devil, then I put that CD in. Call me crazy but I happen to like a little variety in what I hear. This album takes the 80s f**k you attitude of the Crue and gives it a 90s sensibilty. It is Motley at their most honest. It is Motley at their most emotinally raw.

4 out of 5 stars A New Sounding Motley Crue.......2001-01-20

With the exit of short lived front man John Corabi, Motley brings back their brother and original front man Vince Neil. Unlike traditional Motley sounds, Generation Swine gives out a very powerful and raw edge. With all sorts of different sounding drum beats, guitars that sound very engineered, and vocals that are sung through many different voice boxes, this Crue experiment is a huge success. If you are a Crue fan, you will definitely enjoy this album!!

3 out of 5 stars A decent reunion album.......2005-05-17

Motley Crue entered the 1990s as one the biggest, most popular bands in the world. The band was riding high off their "Dr Feelgood" (1989) album and they had just signed a multi-million dollar contract with Electrica. It looked like one of rock's most popular bands from the 1980s was poised to take the 1990s head on.

But almost overnight, things changed. In 1992, a lot of internal and external factors changed the fate of the Crue. In the early 90s, almost overnight, pop-metal, and melodic hard-rock was replaced by grunge and alternative rock (Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam). After Nirvana's "Nevermind" exploded, Motley Crue's style of music was made almost instantly passé. Around the same time, singer Vince Neil and the rest of the band parted ways (Neil says he was fired, the rest of the band maintains that he quite).

Truth be told, had the original lineup of Motley Crue stayed together and stuck to their guns, they probably would have weathered the 90s and the new musical climate, much like Aerosmith or Van Halen (before their lead singer fiasco). Instead, the Crue changed lead singers and embraced a modern sound.

Although Motley Crue's 1994 self-titled effort (with lead singer John Corabi) borrowed from some of the styles that were popular at the time, like Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots, it was still an outstanding album (see my review). And although it has achieved cult-classic status among rock fans, it was a massive flop and generally ignored by the public at large.

In 1996, while sessions were underway for a follow-up album to the '94 self-titled album, Vince Neil and the rest of the band reconciled their differences and the original lineup was reformed.

1997 saw the release of the reunion album "Generation Swine." Like its 1994 predecessor, it debuted in the top ten, took a nose dive and sold poorly, and has received mixed reaction from fans.

Before going into a more detailed review of this album, there is something important to know about how it was created. Motley Crue, with vocalist John Corabi were working on a new album around 1995/96. It was going to be titled "Personality #9." When Vince Neil re-joined the band, Corabi's vocals were simply removed from the songs and Vince Neil sang over them, although Corabi's guitar parts were left on. Some people who listen to this album even claim they can hear Corabi's backing vocals in some of the songs, like "Let Us Pray," although the band has denied Corabi's vocals are on the album.

"Generation Swine" has a lot of good things going for it. It's edgy, for the most part well paced, and most of the songs have infectious hooks and killer solos. And the band sounds passionate.

There's lots of good songs to be found on this album-like the off-beat opening "Find Myself," the dark and melodic "Afraid," the anthem-like title track, the industrial-rock of "Beauty," and "Let Us Pray, " and the punkish "Anybody Out There" are all solid. The cool new wave of "Glitter" and the spacey "Rocketship" add a nice touch.

But there are drawbacks to "Generation Swine." The dragging suicidal "Flush" and "Confessions," sound contrived, and their sluggish pacing puts a wrench in the momentum of the album. "Rat Like Me," and "Shout `97" are throwaways. The former sounds like a bad Smashing Pumpkins b-side, and the latter is far interior the original. "Brandon," Tommy Lee's tribute to his son, while sincere, is awkward and out-of-place on the CD, and a poor way to close it. The album would have been stronger if those songs had been left off, and the much superior "Wreck Me," and "Kiss the Sky" had been included in their place (they are included as bonus tracks on the reissue).

Another drawback to this album is that the music was not really suited for Vince Neil. The songs on this album were written and arranged for John Corabi and they would have sounded much stronger had he sung them. Hopefully someday, the "Personality #9" demos will be released, although I doubt it.

Perhaps my biggest bone to pick with "Generation Swine" is that it sounds contrived. The whole album, while strong at several points, stinks of an 80s hair band trying too hard to jump on a trend. It's as though Motley Crue were trying to be a Nine Inch Pumpkins. If John Corabi had been the vocalist on this CD, that would have been okay, because the Crue with Corabi was like a whole new band. Again, the songs on "Generation Swine" are suited for John Corabi's raspy, bluesy voice, and not the sunny-sunset strip style of Vince Neil. It would be like Van Halen dubbing out Sammy Hagar's vocals from "When It's Love," and having David Lee Roth sing over it.

Despite its faults, "Generation Swine" is a decent album. I'd recommend it if you're a fan of the band, although it's hardly their best album.

5 out of 5 stars The best album they've ever done.......2003-11-28

I know that's a bold statement, but I've believed that since I picked it up back in '97. This was very ahead of its time, and it still, to this day, doesn't sound like anything else out there. I really wish they would have continued in this direction. This is truely a landmark album for an already legendary band.

FIND MYSELF- This is a very in your face, punkish song. A great way to start of a Crue album. 8/10

AFRAID- The lead single for this record. It's a pretty standard rock song with some interesting sounds, but this album has much more than this to offer. The lyrics are great. 8/10

FLUSH- Very moody and dark. The lyrics to this are actually quite disturbing... and that added to the atmosphere created by the music creates one of the album's best tracks. 9/10

GENERATION SWINE- One of the best songs the band has ever done, and also one of their fastest and most aggressive. Tommy Lee's drumming on this record is outstanding. 10/10

CONFESSIONS- Primarily written by Tommy Lee, this is probably the deepest song on this album, and definitely the most emotional. The lyrics are awesome. 10/10

BEAUTY- This was the second single from the album. It's kind of a weird tune. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I don't. It just depends on the day. The vocals are very good, but the lyrics don't compare to the rest of the album in terms of emotional depth. 7/10

GLITTER- This is the weakest song on the album, and one of the weakest the band has ever done. The remix on the "Greatest Hits" album is much better than this one. Vince's performance of the vocals, however, is very good. 4/10

ANYBODY OUT THERE- A very directionless song, and very much Punk Rock... and very short... the lyrics are lame... but the song has so much attitude and recklessness, that it's actually quite excellent! 8/10

LET US PREY- HEAVY!!! The lyrics are very graphic. It's one of my least favorites, but it's one of my favorites as far as lyrics are concerned. 7/10

ROCKETSHIP- I can appreciate the emotion that Nikki Sixx had when he wrote this... but I don't think it's a very good song overall. Sixx's voice is surprisingly good though... and it's much better than "Glitter". 6/10

RAT LIKE ME- GREAT!!! The lyrics are full of that F-YOU attitude. This song is the closest to classic Motley Crue as this album gets. 10/10

SHOUT AT THE DEVIL '97- Better than the original SATD in my opinion. The music is just wicked! 10/10

AFRAID(demo)- Basically the same, just more raw 8/10

WRECK ME- A song that is fueled by pure punk attitude. It's a very different tune, and I can see why it wasn't included on the original album, but it is a very cool song to hear. 8/10

KISS THE SKY- "Flush" is what this song eventually turned in to... but besides that knowledge, the two songs are very different from one another. This one is much more guitar driven, but the lyrics aren't nearly as strong. It's a good song. 8/10

ROCKETSHIP(demo)- Pretty much the exact same as the final version. 6/10

Overall... this album simply has to be heard. You cannot go by negative reviews by fans still stuck in 1989. Hear it for yourself, and hopefully you'll hear the album for what it is... a brilliant musical statement.

4 out of 5 stars A sort of homecoming.......2002-05-30

'Generation swine' is an interesting record. After just one listen you can tell that the Crue didn't enter the recording of this to be a reunion album at all. For whatever reasons the then present vocalist John Corabi was out, and former vocalist Vince Neil was reinstated.
Since sales of the 'Motley Crue' album, (the first, and only album done with Corabi on lead vocals), weren't very impressive, and the fact that the Crue were not doing an album of their typical nature probably made the record label to push for a reunion, as for a vehicle to promote the album. Or, perhaps bassist Nikki Sixx and the gang just found Corabi to their disliking and asked Neil to rejoin, instead of searching for another singer.
Whatever the case, it's obvious that Neil wasn't in mind when many of the songs were written. With Sixx singing lead vocals on three of the songs, drummer Tommy Lee hacking at one of his own tunes, as well as Corabi's fingerprints seen all over the album, one would find it difficult to argue other wise.
Overall I find it quite a decent album. Songs like "Afraid", "Glitter", "Flush", and "Rocketship" show a more mellow style of writing that is generally untypical of the Crue. That's not to say that this album is full of ballads, "Generation swine", "Shout at the devil '97" and the punk flavored "Anybody out there?" make sure to keep the listener on their toes.
The extra tracks on the 'Crucial Crue' edition are kinda cool as well. In fact, "Kiss the sky", an early version of "Flush", is one of my favorite songs on the album.
Also of note, Lee's "Brandon" is surprisingly one of the albums' high points. As well as his penned "Confessions".

1 out of 5 stars IF YOU ARE A MOTLEY CRUE FAN SAVE YOUR SELF!.......2002-03-02

I love Motley Crue's work, I love it! I was so excited to buy this album, it looked awsome! I begin listening to the tittle track and looking at it's lyrics. Your the Generation Swine! "It's all your fault I can have anything I want! I wanna blow my brains out" What the heck? o.k. I have never listened to the album completley! On Shout '96 the intro sounds like a fax machine, Generation Swine sounds like Kurt Cobains sucide note(not to offend anyone), the album was suposed to be like Nine Inch Nales. Sorry Nikki bought if I wanted to listen to NIN I would of bought there album, not a Crue album.

4 out of 5 stars personality #9.......2001-08-25

this record could have been great, but it just misses the mark for two reasons: they dismissed corabi half way through recording, and nikki couldn't decide between a return to too fast's punk-pop and the indutrial buzz brought on by the likes of nin and marilyn manson. the album starts off with a bang - the first half of the record is nearly flawless. "afraid" might be motley's finest moment. but starting with track 7 - the dreadful "glitter" - swine really unravels. it's a shame that they couldn't have made things work with corabi, cuz their indecisevness shows in all the wrong places...

1 out of 5 stars Motley Crue: not any good in the 80s, and not any good in the 90s either.......2006-02-26

Everybody keeps saying that the reason this record sold poorly was because it came out in the 90s and couldn't compete with all the grunge and alternative rock that was popular at the time. Well I've got news for all you Motley Crue fans: YOU'RE WRONG! The only reason this CD flopped is because it was a $hitty record by a $hitty band, plain and simple. Even if the grunge trend never occured, you can bet that "Generation Swine" would have flopped, just because Motley Crue is such a $hitty band. The only reason Motley Crue's popularity declined in the 90s is because their music is annoying. All those people who worshipped Motley Crue in the 80s just woke up and realised that this band is annoying, their music is annoying, and that they were making a mistake by ever liking them. Come on Motley Crue fans, quit fooling yourselves. Don't blame the 90s for this band's decline in popularity. Blame the band itself for putting out music that just wasn't any good! It doesn't matter what decade this piece of cr@p came out in. It could have been the 80s, the 90s or even right now, the only reason nobody likes Motley Crue anymore is because none of it is any good. This band stunk from the beginning, their music was never worth a d@mn.

1 out of 5 stars Not good. Swine was written for Jon Corabi, not Vince Neil.......2005-01-10

The album before that had Corabi was the bomb. I wish I had heard Jon on Swine but he was let go and Vince (who is THE lead singer of the Crue)was brought back in. In a nutshell, Swine has one decent track imo and that is Afraid.
