A key to the longevity of The Yellowjackets can be seen in the writing credits on their latest release. Truly a collective enterprise, all four members write in styles which play to the strengths of their compatriots. Bassist Jimmy Haslip's "Youth Eternal" chugs along over his funky foundation, but Bob Mintzer's tenor lines complete the picture. Mintzer's own "March Majestic" is built on Russell Ferrante's gospel-tinged chording and drummer Marcus Baylor's tight snare rolls. Warmly produced, the subtleties are captured with vivid presence. The disc flows with a cohesiveness, but is built around drama and contrast as well. Guest vocalist Jean Baylor appears on "The Hope," backed by four additional singers, and this one vocal number fits in perfectly. Not forced into the set, it finds the quartet supporting a foreground lyric with grace and invention. --David Greenberger

Yellow Jackets Never Disappoint!.......2007-03-26
Excellent CD! If you are reading this review and you are a huge fan of the Yellow Jackets and don't have this CD yet, go cop it!
The Yellow Jackets are ALWAYS AWESOME.
The best yet, from the best ever.......2006-02-04
I'm probably preaching to the choir here, since everyone who loves Yellowjackets already knows that these guys are at the top of their game. The only question you might have is, is this latest album as good the rest? My answer is yes. Possibly their best yet. I immediately dug the opening piano lick on track 1, though I found the bridge puzzling and bizarre. The rest of the tracks I wasn't sure about for a while, but I just let it ride. Now, at about the 50th playing, I can confidently say I truly love this album. My current favorite is track 4, Hunter's Point, a polyrythmic composition which just oozes with goodness from Ferrante's Rhodes playing. Overall, this album is another masterpiece.
Maybe it's because I'm a keyboard player, or maybe it's just that he's that good, but whatever the reason, Russell Ferrante touches my soul deeply. He, and Lyle Mays and Keith Jarret, are in my opinion, the greatest keyboard players on the planet. Sometimes I suspect Russell is not *from* this planet. Maybe he's from the place called Heaven. All I know is he takes me there.
Now This Is More Like It!.......2005-08-11
I've been a huge Yellowjackets fan for as long as I can remember. I have 13 of their albums and have seen them in concert three times - including one time they toured with Peter Erskine on drums. More on that in a minute.
Following the departure of Will Kennedy, (the most phenomenally dynamic drummer I've ever personally heard or seen and in my view, the best this band ever had), I was beginning to despair. I respect all the musicians in this band, I think they are all awesomely talented, new drummer Marcus Baylor included but the latter is no match for Will. Not to these ears anyway. As skilful as they all are though, the band lost a crucial ingredient of the sound I'd come to love with Will's departure.
The year he left, the group toured with Peter Erskine and there was talk that he might join the band full time. I wasn't that familiar with Pete's work at that time but after hearing (and more importantly, seeing) him at the Jazz Cafe in London, I was like, wow. He more than matched Will Kennedy for what most of us fans had come to love him for - his polyrythmic dexterity behind the drumset. That was one concert I will never forget.
The first Yellowjacket album I heard after Will had left, the live "Mint Jam" was okay mostly because the mixing didn't really expose the limitations of the drumming. The new tunes were great and the familiar ones were good to hear on a live CD.
"Time Squared" did reveal exactly how different Baylor was though and I was very disappointed. As much as I love these guys, that would've been my last buy but my best mate told me about this one so I decided to check it out. As soon as I heard the first track, I was like, yeah, this is more like it!
There's not much I can say about the other guys. Like I've said, to me they will always be the best in their game. But Baylor's drumming has definitely been turned up a notch. He'll never match Kennedy as far as I'm concerned but no doubt he wants to have his own identity anyway and not be seen as a Kennedy clone. This I would say he's achieving. I can still tell that it's him on drums but at the same time, some of the old Yellowjackets sparkle is definitely back.
I'm not really a fan of vocals on jazz albums either unless we're talking someone really significant. They had Bobby McFerrin on a few albums back for instance and he was just brilliant. But Jean Baylor (with the Perry sisters on backing vocals) really shines on "The Hope" and I also like the positive message in the lyrics. Russell Ferrante tries something I'm not sure I've heard from him before on "Hunter's Point" and it works. And every time I hear "Youth Eternal", I'm literally filled with a feeling of eternal youth and I just have to get up and dance.
All in all, a great return to form for Yellowjackets. I'm now very likely to remain a devoted fan well into the foreseeable future. No one could be happier than I am about that.
Another reliable entry into the Y.J. catalog.......2005-05-15
I just bought this CD a couple days ago and thought I would pop in here to see what others thought about it. I was a little surprised by some of the response. I thought this was another typical Yellowjackets CD- excellent musicianship and production that was at a higher level compared to the usual contemporary jazz stuff thats out now. It was slightly mellow but still enjoyable for me as a YJ fan. I must say that I am not as much a fan of some of the earliest YJ music- not so much the Russo days but back to the Ricky Lawson days- so this album fits more of what I expect from Ferrante, Haslip, Minter, & Baylor. One of my favorites is "Hunter's Point", where Mintzer pulls out the electronic piano and gives the music almost an acid-jazzy feel to it. I'm not a big fan of vocals on any instrumental jazz CD, but I did enjoy "The Hope" and it's nice message. Also, being a drum enthusiast and a big fan of Will Kennedy, I again enjoyed Marcus Baylor's tasteful performance- particularly on the aforementioned "Hunter's Point"- as I did on the previous two albums he was on (well, I haven't heard the Christmas CD yet, so I won't count that). He, like Mr. Kennedy did and Mr. Lawson did not, made me want to jump on my kit and play along to the music. All in all, it was another typical YJ album, equal to anything from the mid to late "Kennedy Era"; only slightly mellow, but certainly more than 2-star worthy. Get it if you are a fan!
The Best of the Many Yellowjackets CDs I Own.......2005-04-29
I have nine Yellowjackets albums. I like this one the best because it is the only one in which I like all the tunes. On all the others I end up skipping over some tunes. The sound quality is very good too. I had to listen to this several times to really get into it, but that is true of many of my favorite albums. The tunes are great, and the playing is great. What more could I ask for?

My college roomate had this CD last year and it was my first exposure to "trance" music ever. Let me say, I've been hooked and in the scene ever since -- I'm a trance virgin no more!! THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY COLLECTION.
Excellent for starters AND veterans alike. I've played this CD getting ready for parties AND falling asleep afterwards; it's very versatile with seamless mixes and long drawn-out suspenses.... just what trance is SUPPOSED to be, right? It's a well-spent $12 bucks and the songs are never "aged," meaning they continue to be desired month after month, year after year. The songs are NOT commercialized with #4 being especially satisfying and songs #9-14 having an amazing build-up with intense energy. Happy purchase:)
The tracks are popular...so?.......2006-03-25
Since the tracks are popular, they *must* be bad tracks. At least that seems to be the logic of some people on here.
If you're looking for obscure stuff for the sake of obscurity, then this disc is not for you.
If you listen to music because of how it sounds (crazy concept, eh?) rather than whether other people like it, then this is a good trance compilation.
A unique collection of trance songs.......2004-03-22
This CD is one of my all-time favorites. There isn't a dull song anywhere on the whole thing, and when I put it in my CD player, I have to listen to the entire thing. It's a lot like Paul Oakenfold's 'Tranceport'; each song is unique. It had a strong beginning and an equally strong end; 'Out of the Blue' is a perfect song to close with. I will always love this CD and I recommend it to anybody looking for trance music with a lot of energy and heavy bass.
Before I knew.........2004-02-08
what trance was, I bought this cd when it first came out. It blew me away and I fell in love with it. It may have songs you've heard before, but the way the songs are put together is immaculate. It's a classic to me. No matter how many times I scratch up the cd, I'll always replace it.
Old and played out tracks........2003-02-15
I bought this CD years ago and if you are looking for some new quality trance this isn't it. At the time is was hot but quite frankly the mixing is nothing special and the track selection is very played out now. The only track I can really still handle is Sasha's amazing Expander. Other than that this disk is pretty weak. There are some much better compilations out there so browse around.

Meditation has never been this easy! Close your eyes and relax into bliss.
Customer Reviews:
Really Neat!.......2007-04-10
This is my first Gordon purchase, and I really liked it. It is very relaxing music - good for meditation, yoga or just chilling. I like to listen to it when I'm relaxing in a nice, bubble bath. What makes this different from other CD's is that the music itself is interesting enough to make it more than just relaxing background music. I don't know how else to describe it, but I really enjoy this CD!!
Wonderful music to relax to!.......2006-11-03
As a Massage Therapist, I really enjoy working with this music in my office. It not only helps my client to relax, it helps me to focus on the work at hand. It's very soothing with the water sounds and wind instruments.
Oneness Brings Inner Peace into Perspective.......2002-10-03
With the overwhelming popularity of their more recent "native-influenced" titles, such as the critically acclaimed Sacred Earth Drums, Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine, the older classic ambient titles from the Gordon's early Inner Music Series, tend to get overlooked. This is unfortunate in that these titles, and specifically Oneness, create an incredibly rich soundscape tapestry perfect for relaxation and meditation. The Gordon's masterfully weave these synthesizer laden tracks with Tibetian temple bells, Chinese wind chimes, tamboura and silver flute which effectively guides the listener into the deepest realms of blissful inner peace ! This is a great piece of work that shouldn't be overlooked !

A Good Mix With A Few Stellar Tracks.......2006-09-25
I was just getting into trance music when I saw this on sale at a local music store and picked it up, thinking it couldn't be that bad. I was right; this is actually quite a good mix. But what I really liked about it is that the standout tracks really helped me realize where to go from here. This was a good CD to get me into the genre, and the track listing told me what to get next, namely Deepsky and John Digweed, to name a few. "Cosmic Dancer" and "Heaven Scent" remain two of my favorite tracks to this day, and I wouldn't have the CD collection I have now if it weren't for this disc. So I guess in the end, if you're just getting into trance music, this is a good place to start. Seasoned veterans of the rave scene will find fault with this disc on a few different levels, and will already have heard many of these tracks, but everybody else will like it.
good stuff.......2006-04-15
Trance II (trans), disc 1, mixed by Noel W. Sanger has excellent track selection and flawless blending making this one of the 3 all time best trance CD's ever. the other 2 are Paul Oakenfold's Global Underground 007 disc 1, and Trance Nation America, disc 2 mixed by Jimmy Van M
the essence of trance.......2005-04-23
noel sanger is god.let this compilation take you away. this is truly ONE mood-altering,mind-elevating,high level,kick-ass,jumpin',sweet sweatin' dance in and out of the void, ambient set. where do you want to go?it is here...steve porter, deep sky,angel...(and that's just disc one!) by the time you get thru disc two,you will have seen places that will make your most vivid dreams seem boring...BUY THIS SET and be trans..formed..you won't be sorry.
Perfect.......2003-07-15
I feel this is one of the greatest trance CD's. Although many songs have been mixed before Noel Sanger needs more and more exposure. Pop this CD in and drive up the coast of Cali, chill with your friends, or just sit back and envision yourself somewhere else. I highly recommend this CD to anyone to craves "an altered state of consciousness".
Always Pleasing.......2001-08-16
I can't help but love this cd. Even people that I know that don't like electronica, find this cd somewhat appealing. The cds fit nicely together, are wonderously mixed, and just take you away one right after another. Not many trance compilations can do this for me, they normaly fall into the basic ordinary flow that is just to play at a party, but this one stands out on its own.

Amazing Band.......2007-03-23
Ok I've got to say that this group should be one of history's great supergroups! One Small Boat just grabbed me and didn't let go! Step Into My Groove & Surrender Now are simply awesome tracks, Ghost Beside My Bed is the track that's gotten the most attention but One Small Boat is so obviously the overlooked child in the family! Not only is this CD mind numbingly amazing but Dos follows up in regal fashion and feeds the soul as completely as Altered State does. The best thing that anyone can do for themselves is to not only get this CD, but to also invest in DOS. This band is such a treat to the listener, they should be honored as national treasures!
INCORRECT TRACK LISTING.......2006-10-31
The correct listing is:
1 Step Into My Groove
2 Ghost Beside My Bed
3 Heal Me
4 Do What You Want
5 Reunion
6 One Small Boat
7 Outside
8 Surrender Now
9 Drifting
10 Like Father
11 Until The Music Ends
Hard to Find - Well Worth It.......2005-10-10
When Ghost Beside my Bed first came out, I went on a quest to get my hands on that CD - and played it repeatedly. It was just the most amazing song I'd heard - and the entire CD became one that I enjoyed immensely.
I don't know what it is about the Ghost Beside my Bed song. It has droney, soothing music, but the angst is just so powerfully drawn out. You never really know why the guy is dreaming / envisioning someone beside him. Did his girlfriend die tragically in a crash? Did she run away, never to be seen again? You get the sense of Heathcliff / Wuthering Heights, that lovers were torn apart.
It goes into "Heal Me" which has the same soaring, soothing harmonies and lyrics. In this case, the partner is there with him, making things all better again.
I really love each song on the CD. Reunion. One Small Boat. Do What you Want. This CD is really a must-have for me, and considering how rare it is to find in modern days, I'll take extra good care of it!!
BTW the listing here at Amazon seems to have the wrong track names.
What in the world happend to this band????.......2004-12-15
I too, have this one still on cassette. I first heard this band on a late night radio show which played what WAS alternative music. The DJ introduced "Ghost Beside My Bed" as a song, which kind of reminded him of Pink Floyd. So you can see, this caught my attention. And even after the first listen I went out and bought the cassette and was hooked.
Almost every song on this release is brilliant. Warner Bros. must have thought they had a winner......the music and production on this release has the feel of a more established band. The only drawback, is the opening cut.....does not fit in with the rest of the record. Maybe an attempt at Top 40, I don't know. But saying this, I still think the song is listenable and it only gets better from there. "Ghost Beside.." is the obvious best song on here...all others have a special sound to it, which makes this release classified as a "Lost Classic" by a band who which apparently was given up on. Would be interesting to find out what happened to this band......maybe someone can enlighten me, one day.
Take the chance and give this one a listen to.....you won't be disappointed!!

Father--Look in my eyes! You'll see a GREAT album!!!.......2005-07-08
From the genius ethereal cover to the broad array of emotions within, "Dos" is a well-made bit of 90s art. Altered State effectively carries listeners through funky jams like "Where Is Harrison Ford" as well as "Made Of Gasoline". They rock in an arm-sweeping collective on numbers like "Angst" and "Strong As I Am".
This music effectively depicts Gen-X UP & DOWN w/o screaming or whining or just playing bad music.
Underappreciated BRILLIANCE.......2005-04-24
Very few artists or bands in the hard rock genre get to the creative place Greg Markel & co. found on this, Altered State's second album, Dos. While their Warner Brothers debut has its moments, it pales starkly to Dos, which soars to grand, epic heights under the expansive vision of producer Ben Grosse.
Lyrically, Markel delves into demons few dare to glimpse: fear ("Made of Gasoline" - notice the car crash, co-inciding with opening CRASH cymbal!), family ("Strong As I Am"), and misanthropy (the sonic barrage that is "Where Is Harrison Ford?"). Lyrical twists abound ("Life on a Skateboard") and the album's closing cut "Thinking..." exposes the frontman nearly on the cusp of artistic madness.
The musicianship enhances Markel's compositions, with guitarist Curtis Mathewson shining on the Brian May-like opener "This Just Might Take Me Down" and bassist Paul Edwards letting it all hang out on "Harrison...". Drummer Chip Moreland is Chili Peppers-tight, and shows jazz-like versatility on the album's softer tracks.
Fans of Catherine Wheel, Talk Talk, or Muse would do well to track down this gem, don some headphones and treat themselves to a stunning piece of work. A record of amazing depth and execution.
ahead of their time-a trip.......2005-01-06
I brought this new, and was blown away! This lead me to buy their first one which I was less impressed with, and frankly disappointed. I guess they broke up, which is a shame, but if you like Queens of the Stone Age then you would like Altered States 'Dos'. At the time, the singer had an original voice, which is mimicked now by a few artist, again see the QOTSA reference above.
Trippy, rockin', great lyrics.. for the price that this is offered at, go for it. I would gladly pay regular price again just for a newer version from the one that I wore out.
I wish they were still together, if this was such a large step up from their debut, it would be amazing what they would turn out next. I guess we will never know.
