MTM, Escape Music, and Frontiers have been among the few labels releasing quality melodic rock in the new millennium. Escape Music has blundered badly with the re-release of a Tantrum CD set that was transferred from vinyl. Sorry guys, but in the 21st century, if you cannot find the master tapes, please leave the record unreleased - unless it's an undisputed masterpiece.

This Refugee re-release from MTM Classix, I am sorry to say, fails for the same reason. How can anyone release a transfer from vinyl these days boggles the mind. There are simply many other albums from the 80's that are far more deserving of a re-release where we don't have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find only an ancient vinyl copy around. Listen, I am no audiophile, but hearing pops and crackles should have gone the way of the dinosaurs in the CD age. This is unacceptable to me. So zero stars for MTMs efforts.

The music is pretty good, keyboard-heavy mid-80's melodic rock with occasional flurries that remind me of the epics of Springsteen on a few songs. 3-3.5 stars in my book for the music alone.
