4 out of 5 stars Fans of Sammys career.......2007-07-23

If you are a fan of the "Red Rocker" than you should enjoy this collection of his music spanning his career from Montrose all the way to the Waboritas. I thought it was good sampling of his work thus far.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy, Sammy, Sammy!!.......2007-07-21

Sigh...Just goes to show that a woman over 50 can still fall in love with a man going on 60 if he keeps on rockin' the way he was when he was 20. The best of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent single disc compilation of the Red Rocker........2007-07-11

This excellent single disc anthology for Sammy Hagar starts off with his biggest hit from 1973 with Montrose "Bad Motor Scooter" and then proceeds to go through 19 tracks from his proper solo career.

There are 20 tracks on here and the CD times out at 78:59. It covers his solo years from 1974 to 1984, his 1987 solo album while he was a fairly new member of Van Halen and 3 songs off of his 1997 and 1999 solo albums. The songs have been remastered in crystal clear clarity and really makes me wish that they would remaster Sammy's entire solo catalog from the 70's and 80's in similar fashion.

I'm not getting into if one song should have put on here instead of another as there is only so much you can cram onto an 80 minute CD. While I do think that they would have better served his fans by doing a 2 disc anthology, for a single disc anthology this does exactly what it should do is give someone a great overview of an artist's career in chronological order.

Most of the hits are here but the coolest thing about this is the you get the 3 soundtrack songs from the films Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Footloose, Over the Top in addition to 2 unreleased 1974 tracks as well. They also included the song "High Hopes" which was a track newly recorded for the prior 1994 compilation attempt "Unboxed".

Until they remaster his back catalog at some point, this is a most excellent choice for someone wanting to re-discover Sammy's excellent solo output and get a great chronological overview of his work.

Like I mentioned this would've been even better as double disc retrospective with a lot of his album cuts off of his solo albums on it (and some people say that there should be some Van Halen stuff on here but I disagree), but for what this is you can't do any better.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Songs..........2007-03-14

I've got his other greatest hits & was happy to see that this one wasn't going to be 80% or more of the last one with recent hits. Only 2 songs from his previous (I've Done Everything & Bad Motor Scooter). Of course, with that being said, I wish Cruisin' & Boozin' was one of the 2 (maybe a live version?). Most guys don't have this many hits in their entire career. He's got 2 full albums, plus his VH stuff... & more records to come.

No numeric or anagrammatic puns in the title of album #11, a sure sign that a new chapter is opening for these monsters of '80s rock. The band's formula has been polished to a blinding gleam here by producer Bruce Fairbairn, and there's a formidable mix of radio cuts (the first single "Don't Tell Me," "Can't Stop Lovin' You"), boneheaded rawk numbers ("Amsterdam," "Big Fat Money") and towering, cinematic epics ("The Seventh Seal," "Feelin'"). --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2007-06-23

This is another great album by one of the greatest bands to hit the hard rock scene, Van Halen. Eddie's guitar sounds amazing as do Alex's drums.
1: The Seventh Seal: Awesome riff by eddie and a fun song to listen to.
2: Cant Stop Lovin You: A nice bass line in the background and a great love song.
3: Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do): Argueably one of the greatest riffs I have heard, you can hear the mean, growl of Eddie's Guitar along with a classic EVH solo. A heavy song that is one of the best on the album.
4: Amstersdam: A fun song with a great tone of Eddie's Guitar and an awesome solo. Another great song.
5; Big Fat Money: Another fun song with really good solo work and just makes you wanna jump up and dance the ngith away ;)
6: Eddie Van Halen gettign creative with forks on a piano and inside it, should be used in a horror secene of a movie, it's creepy.
7: Not Enough; A sweet and easy-going song with nice piano work.
8 Aftershock: One of the best on the album, A great riff and a really good song with classic EVH soloing.
9: Alex's Van Halen mastery over the drums.
10: Balichutherium: An excellent instrumental song with deadly EVH guitar tone. Probably the best tone I've ever heard from a guitar. At the end, u can hear what EVH can do with a guitar and the different noises that he can make with a guitar.
11: A good song that always amke me think of the old days for me.
12: Feelin' :A slower song but really good with one of the fastest solos I've heard since eruption. Just shows you EVH's mastery over the guitar.

Overall, I'd rate this album 9/10. It's a great album and never gets old to me. If you are a VH fan, it's a must own. Even if you are just a hard-rock fan, you should own this.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment/Unbalanced.......2007-03-30

I wanted to like this album. I really did. I'm a big Van Halen fan, and a big Van Hagar fan as well.

It's just too trite. Many of the songs feel like they threw a bunch of good elements in a hat (low chorused guitar riff/harmonics/big beat/primal scream/crazy solo/resolving of tension with soaring melodic guitar) and pulled them out in combinations to create songs. Some of these elements work for a few bars, but ultimately they all disappoint.

Honestly, there isn't a single song on this album that is really complete and interesting. Sorry guys. I tried.

3 out of 5 stars Inbalance.......2007-02-12

Almost released as an instrumental album after Hagar walked out near the end of the sessions. The VH boys are weaker here and running out of ideas. Sure, Amsterdam is the hash capitol of the world, but did we really need an anthem for the city written by a 50 year old rocker.

4 out of 5 stars Rhytmical Van Halen.......2006-04-03

Well, that's last full studio album with Hagar up to date.
Bruce Fairbairn, who produced this album, made it sound quite different than other VH albums. But I wouldn't say it's too polished like some people think. Few ballads are really in pop style, but thats the way Bruce was doing it.I think Ed and Bruce efforts were to do good riffs and Eddie was thinking more about rhythm guitar than soloing on this album. Now about the tracks:
1 The Seventh Seal - It's good mid-tempo rocker with nice oriental intro and with no solo, nice, strong drums. - 8/10
2 Can't stop loving you - it's very warm ballad with radio-friendly chorus, it has a lot of Ed's trademark guitar tricks in the background. 7/10
3 Don't tell me(...) - well, very strong riff, song is sung very rhytmical. Two guitar solos, chorus little bit more gentle than rest of the song. 9/10
4 Amsterdam - song about smokin :) Eddie's solo is something like immitating helicopter's propeller(it refers to "brain shake" when you are stoned?) 9/10
5 Big fat money - it's very fast straightforward track, funny rocker. It's mix of hard rock, punk, and classic rock in the style of 60?(chorus) 10/10
6 Strung out - it's Eddie playing piano with... knife and fork, he also is digging inside the piano - ?/10
7 Not Enough - Beautiful ballad, with guitar-piano duo. 7/10
8 Aftershock - this is my favorite on this album, good rocker with great vocals and one of the most impressing of Eddie's guitar solos ever (it's the second one, at the very end of the track) of course 10/10
9 Doing Time - drum solo(who likes drum solos???) 5/10
10 Baluchiterium - guitar - synth instrumental with Ed (at the end) immitating ducks, elephants, dogs etc. 8/10
11 Take me back - not impressing ballad, with english spelled "deja vu"(I prefer french, original version) 5/10
12 Feelin - great ballad, very monumental thing, everything is on it's place there. 9/10
Japanese edition cd has also "Crossing Over", nice semi-ballad(?)with beautiful intro which reminds guitar from "Cathedral".
Tensions between Ed and Sam led to band split some time after "balance' tour finished. Among other problems there were alcohol problems and, of course, different opinions about where VH music should go to.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect balance of sound and substance.......2006-03-14

Balance...according to me the best post-David Lee Roth Van Halen effort. I would even go to say that this is their best record on 3 days out of a week, the other competitior being their self-titled debut album.

Edie Van Halen as usual, is the linchpin in this enormous effort from a band that became extremely popular in the late 70's and early 80's. Edie Van Halen is proabably every new guitarist's idol and every semi-seasoned guitarists worst nightmare! Pioneering a different kind of sound, with his blazing fast solos and trademark two-handed finger tapping, Edie Van Halen undoubetdly is one of the most talented guitarists around, still rocking hard as ever; a lot of guitarists nevertheless having tried (and some shamelessly succeeding to a certain extent) to copy his style and endorsing it as their own. Rumour has it that Edie was so bothered by this, that whenever he had to play a lead, he would turn his back to the crowd, lest anyone see how he was playing!

Van Halen as a band, has over the years transformed from a fun-loving college-girl-boy pleasing outfit to a more serious and mature band. Although 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' still showed slight strains of happy-go-lucky (still superb rock) endorsements, 'Balance' comes across as a more serious effort...and the resulting sound is a clear cut above contemporary hard rock...a lot of it courtesy Edie's guitar playing sklls.

Balance contains some of the finest riffs Edie has ever come up with, although songs like 'Ain't talkin' 'bout love', 'Panama', 'Jump' and the famous and path-breaking 'Eruption' have memorable leads and patches, that are still considered second to none.

The first track, 'The Seventh Seal' has a riff almost like a sonic boomerang. A sound and tone effect never heard before, Edie sets agenda for a different kind of guitaring, one that is quite different from his accomplished style of pelting out riffs.
Similar gargantuan riff sections follow in 'Don't tell me what love can do' and 'Aftershock', all powerful numbers that can easily rock an entire stadium.
The piece de resistance of Edie's guitaring is unearthed in the absolutely amazing 'Feelin', which features a blazing fast solo and some sizzling finger tapping combined with beating riffs.
A taste of the broken style riff of 'Ain't talkin' 'bout love' can be heard on 'Amsterdam', another super riff-based track, which towards the end, is as much as a sonic kaleidoscope. The heaviest, or rather fastest Van Halen song ever, would have to undeniably be 'Big Fat Money'. And what a way to start the song, absolutely head banging stuff with definitive Edie riffing. Super rocking song.

A couple of love and soft rock songs come in the form of 'Can't stop loving you', 'Not Enough' and 'Take me back(deja vu), the latter having some beautiful acoustic accompaniment.
Instrumental manifestations appear in the form of the stringy 'Strung Out', which is a lot of fretwork I think, the royal 'Baluchitherium' (almost sounds like a Satch creation) and the percussion oriented 'Doin' Time'.

Die hard David Lee Roth fans might have to get used to the harsh vocals of Sammy Hagar, which is a far cry from the ways of Roth. Still, Sammy does a decent enough job, maybe sounding a bit too harsh sometimes, but nevertheless nothing incongruent to the music of the band as a whole. Anyways it won't take long to realise why this album rocks big time...and you'll have to thank Edie for that. Nothign Erupts like 'Ain't talkin' 'bout love, but there's pretty a punch to leave you with a feelin' of after shock.

Top Picks: (In case you're making a best of collection)
Seventh Seal, Aftershock, Amsterdam, Don't tell me, Baluchitherium, Big Fat Money, Deja Vu and Feelin'.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2005-07-02

This is by far the best complete Sammy Hagar album ever released. The songs are well crafted hard rock gems. No other album in Sammy's career ever had this many quality songs all together. Even his Van Halen days didn't give us an album that matches these standards. Standing Hampton is one of the greatest albums ever made and has been on my list since the first time I heard it when I was a teenager. The album's killer grooves contain the top notch "Heavy Metal", "There's Only One Way To Rock", I'll Fall In Love Again" & "Baby, It's You". The albums lesser known tracks will not disappoint you as they are just as stellar as the singles. Hagars cover of "Piece Of My Heart" is fine version even if not as good as Janis's. I can't say how great Standing Hampton is you just have to hear it for yourself. I only wish that more people gave this incredible album its due!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite SAMMY HAGAR album! .......2005-05-26

If Standing Hampton was a food, I'd eat 3 meals a day, if it was a house, I'd live there till I died. If it was a car, I'd drive it till the wheels fell off..

..but that's applying Music to mere material possesions, and music is much more than that, as we know. This album embodies Really great butt-kicking, sweet & classy rock and roll. From the opening track "I'll fall in Love again", which is an awesome heart-felt tune, to heavier romps like "Baby's on Fire" and "Heavy Metal", this is a complete rock music masterpiece. Great Guitars and heavy drums included!. This album is really great because of all the mid-tempo rockers in between. Not power ballads, not tons of fast rock songs, nothing with a dark, brooding background, just good fun rock and roll Sammy Hagar Style. Sammy's music is so much more, it's an experience, and takes you to a place called FUN where the sun never goes down and the beer never goes dry!

If you like Some of his other CD's, or enjoyed his songs with Van Halen from 1986-96, then I strongly recommend you look into adding this one to your collection. As I said before, Its my favorite album. Cars and Houses come and go, but I've been listening to this album off and on for the past 20 years, and never grow tired of it. It's great for the house, parties, or for driving on that long deserved road trip.

5 out of 5 stars An early 80s AOR classic.......2005-04-21

By the time Sammy Hagar released "Standing Hampton," the Red Rocker was already a veteran hard-rocker. The former Montrose and future Van Halen singer had spent the 70s releasing a string of solo albums for Capital Records. Although these albums, were for the most part consistently good, it's Hagar's 80s Geffen albums that see his finest solo offerings. Hagar's knack for writing good, catchy AOR songs hit its high point during this period. Released in 1981, "Standing Hampton" was the best album Hagar released, since Montrose's debut album, which was released five years earlier.

"Standing Hampton" is a great, meat-and-potatoes, 80s hard-rock album. It's all killer and no filler. Each song is tightly written and has a good hook, sing-along-chorus, and a few cool solos. Most of the songs on this disc are mid-tempo, but this album never gets tepid or runs out of steam. I would go as far as to say that "Standing Hampton" surpasses any album Hagar released with Van Halen, in terms of memorable, well-written songs with good hooks. As a guitar player, Hagar is no Eddie Van Halen, but his solos and playing on this album are still excellent. So even if Hagar isn't the most technically proficient guitarist, his playing and his solos are undeniably good. And most important, Hagar is a first class songwriter.

"Standing Hampton" is an enjoyable, good natured album. Personally, I feel that this album is sort of like musical meatloaf, it's comfort music. Although I should point out that it still is substantive; it's not mindless fun, like Poison.

The album starts off with the mid-tempo "I'll Fall in Love Again." A song about keeping it going after being burned. "There's Only One Way to Rock" is a fast-paced arena-rocker that could have easily been used for Van Halen (VH often played this song live). "Baby's On Fire" is another mid-tempo song that sounds a bit like "Man on a Mission" from Van Halen's "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" (1991). The synth-heavy rocker "Can't Get Loose" is one of Hagar's more underrated songs. It's a song about people who just can't seem to get a break. It features some of Hagar most thoughtful lyrics. "Heavy Metal" is another Hagar classic. It pretty much sums up the spirit of the genre for which the song is named. The album slows down a bit for the striking baled "Baby it's You." This underrated gem is far superior to many of the love songs for which Hagar is famous for (i.e., "Why Can't This Be Love," "Feels So Good.") "Surrender" is a more upbeat, underrated gem in the same vein. "Inside Lookin' In" is another very cool, catchy rocker, and keeps up the momentum. "Sweet Hitchhiker" along with "One Way to Rock" is one of the albums more fast-paced songs. The album closes with an excellent cover or the Janis Joplin classic "Piece of My Heart." This version may not surpass the original, but it's easily just as good. The saxophone solos are a nice touch.

"Standing Hampton," stands alongside Montrose's self-titled debut, Van Halen's "5150," and "Balance" and his first post VH album "Marching to Mars" as Hagar's best work. Any fan of 80s rock, AOR, or Van Halen is sure to love "Standing Hampton."

5 out of 5 stars THERE IS ONLY ONE SAMMY.............2004-02-09

Not much to add to what everyone has said. Sammy is immensely talented, with a flair to write great catchy, hard rocking songs. This and "Three Lock Box" are my two fave Sammy albums. Not sure which I would pick as the better one-they are both outstanding. The music scene today is seriously lacking great rock music that Sammy and a few others have made famous. "There's only one way to rock" and "Heavy Metal" are on the harder side while "Baby it's you" and "Surrender" are not as heavy but still great tunes that deserved to be hits! Everyone who loves Sammy already has this but if you are new to his music, you can't go wrong here

5 out of 5 stars Tied with 3 Lock Box as Sammy's best........2003-06-05

This is one of those fun, tuneful hard rock albums. If you want to only buy one of his full studio albums, start with this one.

The pounding soundtrack song "Heavy Metal" is here. The title is pretty descriptive too, as the song talks about that very subject. The somewhat '70s tinged classic/hard rocker "Baby's On Fire" is a song telling the story of a girl he knows. In this same vein, the cover of "Piece Of My Heart" is easily as good as the original. "I'll Fall In Love Again" is a mid tempo, somewhat heartfelt song that still rocks, albeit with a lighter, more pop based '80s sounding beat. This should've been a huge hit. My absolute favorite song of his, though, is the fast, anthemic "There's Only One Way To Rock". It's a celebratory, fun song that also sounds more reminiscent of 80s hard rock. It's perfect in the sense that it's still extremely catchy, with a tiny bit of pop thrown in.

The other songs are good too. "Baby It's You" is an obscure, very nice sounding power ballad. "Surrender" is a cover, that's similar in style, but not as good. The heavier "Sweet Hitchhiker" is another song about picking up a girl. Sammy is great at subjects like this! "Inside Lookin' In" is a lighter, more melodic rocker that could've been a hit. "Can't Get Loose" is a longer, more epic rock song that isn't quite as good, but not bad.

Sammy Hagar is still fairly well known and liked today, even among people who aren't big hard rock fans. The age range, both young and old, among people who like him is bigger too. One reason I think he's not lumped in with the '80s is that he's JUST different enough from alot of his peers of the decade to stand out. He's not quite as silly sounding or trendy as Poison or Whitesnake. He's not as thrashy or loud as Megadeth or early Metallica. He's heavier than typical '80s AOR such as Loverboy or Survivor, and used less keyboards than them. Many of the afforementioned artists are what I'd call guilty pleasures today (or, maybe even than, if I'd been high school/college aged in the 80s), whereas Sammy is more timeless sounding.

Three lock box is vintage hagar, I love this album! The release of this 1983 was just a glimpse of things to come from Sammy Hagar for the NEXT 25 YEARS: Great vocals, superb songwriting, melodic & anthemic rock that filled a niche, then overflowed and overpowered most around it!

Three Lock Box is a rocker
Remote Love is a sweet poppy tune
Remember the heroes is a DEEP heart felt rock tune dedicated to all of our veterans!
Your love is driving me crazy - Great pop tune with excellent melody, great riffs on the guitar as well!
In the Room - Dark, spooky tune, quite a trip! Reminds me of some prog rock space tune or something of a meidevil background.
Rise of the Animal - The Room song jumps into this hard driving rock tune.

The rest of the tunes are fun and rockin' as well. If you have not heard sammy hagar, or liked some of his work with Van Halen, you should start with this album. I personally feel his best solo works are this, VOA, and Standing Hampton. All are gems, and all are multi-platinum recordings.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Sammy Hagar's Best.......2002-09-20

THREE LOCK BOX is good-time rock album that has some serious lyrics- "Remember The Heroes" is about Vietnam, and "I Wouldn't Change A Thing", describes life's experiences. The blend of Bob Seger/Ted Nugent Detroit rock, Skynyrd/Outlaws Southern rock, and Humble Pie/Foghat/Montrose heavy metal that was present on STANDING HAMPTON remains, but a bit of Journey-esque pop-rock creeps in on the hit single "Your Love Is Driving me Crazy." This and its predecessor, along with MARCHING TO MARS, RED VOODOO, TEN 13, and NOT 4 SALE, are Sammy Hagar's finest solo albums. The fact that Hagar currently advocates sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's recent trumped-up drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as more funding for law enforcement, makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars The best all-around Hagar album.......2002-08-08

There aren't as many hits here as on Sammy's predecessor "Standing Hampton" or the follow-up "VOA." Both of those come pretty close, but just because there's very little filler here, this marginally wins.

"Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" is Sam's biggest hit and my favorite song of his. It's almost never played on the radio anymore, though. It's a typical '80s Hard Rocker, but slightly more pop, due to keyboard use. Many other songs here use them too. "Remote Love" and "Never Give Up" are carbon copies and excellent album tracks. The other hits were the title track and "I Don't Need Love." These are more like his standard fare. The latter is also one of his best, fast-paced, sex and party, but 'safe' song.

"I Wouldn't Change A Thing" was, I believe, a minor hit that should've been bigger. One thing about this album that were LESS present in others was the slightly serious thoughts on top of the usual party rock. The part ballad "Remember the Hereoes" (about soldiers) was the only completely dramatic song, but it fits in well and is a nice addition. "Growing Up" was a self-explanatory look at just that. (One thing I like about Rock stars is they don't have an age limit for subjects. Sammy was in his late 30s when this came out, but he can talk about coming of age and make it sound totally natural). "In the Room" was another change. The only song I can't get into. A little darker, it talks about dreamland vs reality. "Rise of the Animal" is similar to this, but somewhat more musically engaging.

3 Lock Box is more or less forgotten probably since it's sandwitched between albums which have the near Metal of "One Way to Rock" and "Heavy Metal" as well as the classic road song "Can't Drive 55." By the time I discovered this, I was a die-hard fan of those too, so take my word, don't pass it up.

He may be vying for the title of the world's oldest teenager, but mop-topped, Hawaiian-shirt-bedecked Sammy Hagar wears it well. Solo sailing has been successful for the former Van Halen and Montrose singer. And proving that age hasn't mellowed him, Hagar boldly entreats his faithful fans to "Stand up and shout!" on the booming, bluesy, Led Zeppelin-influenced opener. On "Stand Up," psychedelic guitar tones and Hagar's pleasingly piercing vocals may be a bit timeworn, but they're also timeless. From the retro organ flourishes on "Hallelujah" to the power ballad "Halfway to Memphis" to the Black Crowes-like "The Big Nail," Not 4 Sale mines time-honored blues-rock without bringing much new to the plate. Hagar's Zeppelin influences are made all the more clear via "Whole Lotta Zep." And while he's no Plant, the buoyant lyrics to the bouncy pop of the title track indicate that being Sammy is a good place to be. --Katherine Turman

3 out of 5 stars Good, Bad and Ugly.......2006-10-05

This album has some of Hagars greatest solo work in the form of Hallelujah, Halfway To Memphis, Things Have Changed and Not 4 Sale - and then it has some absolute stinkers in Whole Lotta Zep, Karma Wheel and The Big Square Inch.
Worth buying just for the 4 mentioned tunes, but don't expect this to make any lists of classic albums.

4 out of 5 stars More vintage Sammy.......2006-08-25

Sammy proved he still had it with this release--his 4th solo album after he left Van Halen. This is a raw, bluesy, rocking release that has a live feel to it. Listen to rockers like "Stand Up" and the title track for that vintage Sammy sound. Also, slower tracks like "Halfway to Memphis" and "Things've Changed" stand up to previous material. "The Big Square Inch" is a great example of a fun rocker with a great, lengthy solo followed by a bluesy bridge--also vintage Sammy. "Hallelujah" and "Make It Alright" are fantastic, melodic anthems, while still a bit rough around the edges like this whole album is.

I don't care for the Led Zepplin tribute "Whole Lotta Zep", as I don't see the point covering these two tired songs that we have already heard a zillion times. I also like the previous album "Ten 13" a bit better, as it is more cohesive and better produced--not to mention one of my favorite Sammy albums ever. Beyond that, though, this album stands up to previous Sammy albums. Once I got over comparing it to "Ten 13", I realized that this album stands up well on its own. Definitely a worthwhile listen.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sammy Cd Yet.......2005-09-30

You have got to give it to Sammy Hagar, he sticks to his roots and does what people want him to do (which is make really good rock) and he does it well. He never fails to disapoint in all his years, and the older he gets, the better he preforms. He makes all these cd's for his fans, even if they don't sell as well as they used to. He is making this excellent music for sake of making excellent music and to satisfy his musically hungry fans. This CD rocks hard all throughout. Not a single slow song on this. This is a great CD for people just getting into sammy, or anyone that likes rock. From Whole lotta Zep, to Not 4 Sale, this alblum rocks with great vocals, guittar, and all things rock. Rock on Sammy.

5 out of 5 stars Old-school Hagar.......2004-03-29

Honestly, not a bad song on this cd, except the Whole Lotta Zep song, but that was even tolerable. From start to finish, it's a great cd. Like I said, I could have lived without the Zep tribute, but Hagar had fun with it, nonetheless. If you can get this cd, get it. It's Hagar's best since Standing Hampton.

It might appear unseemly for a fiftysomething singer to be praising the consumption of mas tequila. But this is Sammy Hagar we're talking about, the overgrown beach boy who owns a club in party-central Cabo San Lucas and boasts his own brand of tequila. Hagar's second solo album since departing Van Halen continues down the blues-based, fun-infused path the Red Rocker has traveled since his days with Montrose. Here Hagar borrows hints of the Stones, ZZ Top, and even Gary Glitter. The likable if juvenile "Shag" (as in "You make me want to shag you, baby") is balanced against "The Love," "Right on Right," and "Returning of the Wish," all strong, more "serious" songs. Hagar's whiskey- (or is that tequila-?) soaked voice is by turns sultry and playful, the guitar work scorching and soulful. On Red Voodoo, Hagar has once again proved himself deft and irresistible when it comes to penning middlebrow party anthems. --Katherine Turman

He is awesome and Van Halen had their best music when he was with them!!

4 out of 5 stars red voodoo.......2006-04-10

I really enjoyed this album. Nothing complex or epic, but that's not what Sammy is all about. Straight ahead good tunes about drinking, lovin' and partying. Pretty standard Sammy stuff. It's good to see Sammy moving forward from VH and doing what he loves and having fun. David Lee and the VH brothers could take a lesson from this guy instead of continuing to hurl insults at each other, wallowing in misery and making music that is boring.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy's The Best........2005-06-25

This is truly a great cd song for song. I believe he's the best rock singer out there today. If you like Sammy you will love his cds. Also check him out in concert if you get the chance.

5 out of 5 stars SAMMY ROCKS !!!!!!.......2003-02-15

If you like Sammy then why haven't you bought this CD yet ? It's a rocking collection of party rock songs and a couple soulful guitar driven ballads. One of Sammy's greatest CD's EVER !!!

3 out of 5 stars Better than MARCHING TO MARS.......2002-11-06

This is Sammy startting to let go and do some of the fun stuff that he is used to, however maybe he needs to go back to his routes a little more. The opening track of MAS TEQUILA is a very good track however what the heck is up with the Gary Glitter sampling. The next song SHAG, makes me think, what the heck did he have mas tequila when writing it. The next pretty good song on the album is HIGH AND DRY AGAIN. It's my belief that a true Hagar fan will and should purchase this album. Please don't get me wrong this is a good album but this isn't his best work.

Before 1985, when Sammy Hagar became the second frontman for Van Halen, he had a fairly successful career as a solo artist. Unboxed compiles his best songs from the decade before he replaced Diamond Dave. In truth, this is probably the best way to hear Hagar solo because, like David Lee Roth and Joe Walsh, Hagar's individual records were never really strong enough to stand alone. Standout tracks on Unboxed include "Heavy Metal," a murky, futuristic cut recorded for the film of same name, the bluesy, blustery "Three Lock Box," and the anthemic radio cut "I Can't Drive 55." In 1997, Hagar left Van Halen to recharge his solo career. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY SAMMY HAGAR GREATEST HITS COMPILATION ALBUMS YOU SHOULD OWN........2007-04-09

I will be writing a review on the legendary album simply entitled "SAMMY HAGAR UNBOXED" by one of Rock's greatest charismatic showman and a legendary artist that is also a well known accomplished guitarist. This legendary performer also has one of the best resumes in Rock n' Roll history. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of Monterey, California's pride and joy's, MR. SAMMY HAGAR. "SAMMY HAGAR UNBOXED" was originally released in 1994 on Compact Disc on the Geffen Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

SAMMY HAGAR will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for not only having an extremely successful solo career, but joining and performing with two of the greatest Rock n' Roll bands ever. When SAMMY HAGAR joined MONTROSE and later VAN HALEN, HAGAR would add more Rock n' Roll experience and expertise to his long resume. But before HAGAR would join either one of these bands, HAGAR would have to prove himself by backing it up with his brilliant guitar playing arrangements during his successful solo career. During HAGAR'S solo career in the 70's and 80's, HAGAR would release some great legendary albums and hit songs to highly critical acclaim. Following his extremely successful albums and hit songs would be many numerous greatest hits compilation albums that would contain some of his greatest hits on one collection but not have those same hit songs on the other collections. The greatest hits compilation album I'm about to review for you now contains one of the best HAGAR solo works ever and on one disc. There are only two problems here with this HAGAR greatest hits collection. One, this HAGAR greatest hits collection highlights HAGAR'S solo works from the 80's only. Two, this greatest hits collection would have been excellent and so much better if it would have contained HAGAR'S trademark 80's anthem Rocker "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy." Despite these inferior flaws, this 80's greatest hits compilation album still kicks a*s. In my opinion, "SAMMY HAGAR UNBOXED" is definitely without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer craftfully skilled genius and musical creativity of a real gifted mastermind. With this in mind, this legendary compilation album would naturally be destined in becoming a fine fitting tribute to a master showman who calls himself SAMMY HAGAR who was very truly indeed, far ahead of his time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of SAMMY HAGAR to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking. The legendary "SAMMY HAGAR UNBOXED" compilation album begins with the a*s kicking hard Rocker "High Hopes," the fast paced and energetic hard Rocker "Buying My Way Into Heaven," the incredible mellow Rocker "I'll Fall In Love Again," the thrashing and blasting hard a*s anthem Rocker "There's Only One Way To Rock," the blistering killer hard Rocker "Heavy Metal," the slow and beautifully well arranged Rocker "Eagles Fly," the breathtaking hard Rocker "Baby's On Fire," the raw and firey hard Rocker "Three Lock Box," the soulful and heartfelt mellow Rocker "Two Sides Of Love," the forever groundbreaking HAGAR a*s kicking trademark hard Rocker anthem "I Can't Drive 55," the slow hard a*s Rocker "Give To Live" and the merciless hard Rocker "I Don't Need Love." May I also add that HAGAR'S incredibly raw and crisp lead vocals were always hitting their mark easily and perfectly. To add to his Rock n' Roll lead vocals, HAGAR complimented his lead vocals with his brilliant and blistering guitar riffs and licks arrangements that were delivered through his blasting guitar. HAGAR'S guitar playing arrangements were definitely burning red hot on fire during the recordings of all of these legendary songs.

Overall, this is one hell of a legendary compilation album worth seeking and researching further into especially if you are a diehard SAMMY HAGAR fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers as well as the new beginners that are not familiar with the sound and music of SAMMY HAGAR, this is one of the many numerous compilation albums I would definitely purchase to start my SAMMY HAGAR collection. However, there are many other greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to research further into before you make your decision as to which album is right for you to purchase. Because either way you choose in the long run, you will not regret buying this album nor will you be disappointed or sorry that you own a SAMMY HAGAR album. In the end, you will be a very happy and satisfied customer. All of SAMMY HAGAR'S albums are available through amazon.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary SAMMY HAGAR compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one of the many great HAGAR compilation albums that a diehard music fan as well as a devout music collector would not want to be without.

In closing, with all of HAGAR'S solo career experience as well as his experience with MONTROSE and later VAN HALEN on his resume, HAGAR is still not about to rest on his laurels. After VAN HALEN, SAMMY HAGAR has continued to record new albums and perform on tour to sell-out crowds the world over up to this very day with his new band SAMMY AND THE WABOS with VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony in the new millennium. VAN HALEN would also receive the highest ultimate honor in being inducted in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Due to the bickering and fighting between Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth resulting in the cancellation of the upcoming VAN HALEN tour marking the return of the original VAN HALEN frontman David Lee Roth, only HAGAR and ANTHONY were present at the Rock n' Roll Hall of fame ceremony to accept their awards. With this in mind, I guess it is safe to say that SAMMY HAGAR is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. SAMMY HAGAR has contributed and accomplished so much in the Rock n' Roll world that he has already forever left his mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you SAMMY. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. As as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. SAMMY HAGAR RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars A great collection from his eighties work, missing his early red rocker days, still some good stuff.......2007-01-23

I have had this sammy collection the longest, and it was good for the time. It does skip his early red rocker days after montrose, but it captures his 80's run just prior to and the solo album during Van Halen. These are my favorite songs of his, so its good for me, but Incomplete for his overall body of work. Now they do have the essential red collection out which get back to his Montrose days to present, but it still feels like it is to short to cover his entire work. I really like Three lock Box, which is not included on that collection. So, this one is cheap now on amazon, pick up the red collection and this, and you have a pretty good sammy collection between the two.

1 out of 5 stars Sammy can't write a coherent lyric if his life depended on it.......2006-06-26

Sammy could possibly be the most uncreative rock lyricist to disgrace the genre.

His reliance on insipid love references and black and white analysis and subjects like "I Can't Drive 55" suggest he has never mentally left his teenage years.

His guitar-playing is workman-like at best.

Do not buy this or any other Hagar cd.

Unfortunate that the Amazon site does not allow for a zero star review.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy Hagar Unboxed.......2005-10-08

Sammy Hagar Unboxed is full of great tunes. It collects 10 classic songs from Hagar's years at Geffen records, and adds to new songs High Hopes and Buying My Way into Heaven. All the tracks on Unboxed come from Standing Hampton, Three Lock Box, Voa, and Sammy Hagar a.k.a. I Never Said Goodbye only overlooking HSAS Through the Fire that came out in between VOA and Sammy Hagar. Unboxed contains most of Hagar's hits from 1982-1987. Although Unboxed is a great set, Sammy Hagar deserves much better, and I'm aware of the Essential Red Collection released last year. When are they going to get it right? It's about time they released a double disc set combining his Montrose hits, with his hits on Capitol,Geffen, and MCA Hagar deserves a complation that covers his whole career. This man is a rock n roll icon, over three decades of rock and only a couple of single disc complations for this guy!!

3 out of 5 stars Before you buy this check out new "Essential Red Collection".......2004-08-07

Sammy Hagar's Essential Red Collection will be released on August 10, 2004, so it might be worth your time to look at that compilation before buying this older one. I believe that the "Essential Red Collection" even has at least one track from Sammy's days with Montrose (unless it's a live version of "Bad Motor Scooter".)

One of my beefs with both collections is that "When the Hammer Falls" is absent. Although I'm not completely familar with everything Sammy has done, IMHO that is the best track from his "I Never Said Goodbye" album. But at least the new collection has "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy," which is inexplicably missing from "Unboxed".

3 stars (because the new compilation is more thorough and longer [20 tracks], and this album is missing one of my favorite Sammy-solo tracks "When the Hammer Falls" and also "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" ).

It's fitting that perennial party boy Sammy Hagar would title a CD after his own birth date, as every day of his life is seemingly a celebration for the stalwart rocker. The malleable Hagar moved on quickly following his successful stint in Van Halen. But while the frontman's trademark intense vocals and classic-rock core are present, many songs on Ten 13 feel updated. "Serious Juju" is a dark, slightly mechanized entry that would almost be at home on a Godsmack album. On the other hand, "The Message" is akin to some of Hagar's polished work with Van Halen. Ballads such as "Deeper Kinda Love" are decent, but it's on energetic rockers ("Shaka Doobie," "3 in the Middle") where Hagar shines. However, even where Ten 13 is more introspective, it's also energetic, muscular, and dynamic. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Two great songs.......2006-08-07

I can always find a couple songs on each of Sammy's albums that I listen to over and over. For me, the songs Deeper Kinda Love and A Little Bit More are the two standout tracks from this album.

The next best song is Ten 13. Slade fans out there will recognize this song as virtually identical to the Slade song Ready To Explode (Part II The Grid) from their 1984 album KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY POWER SUPPLY.

As for the rest of the album, it's good, if for nothing else than because of Sammy's always-present enthusiasm and delivery, but the songs just seem to lack the killer hooks.

Overall a good rocking album, but not as consistent as his other albums in the 1997-2002 period.

3 out of 5 stars Sammy keeps hard rock (no not 80's hair metal) relevant. 3 1/2 stars.......2006-05-01

Sammy solo post Halen rocked more than his former band and there was far less of the sap that kept some people away. This album starts off with four great songs. There's two great rockers Shaka doobie and Let Sally ride. This is simply what good hard rock music is and there's none better than Sammy right now to remind us that real rock music is alive.

Serious Juju is also a rocker but there's some semi industrial (well not quite) stuff going on as well. The Message is my pick for best song on the album, it's one of Sammy's inspirational songs, but it's got crunching guitars all through and doesn't go too far into sap territory. The next songs do however, Deeper kinda love, Little bit more. I guess hardcore fans must like these two but it's just too classic Hagar ballad like for me. Ten 13 brings the fun back again, I get a sort of Wings/Rock show vibe off this. It's just that sort of live show opener, "Let's celebrate, don't be late".

That's where the album starts to drag for me. Protection is a bore. 3 in the middle and Real deal picks up a bit but it's nowhere as good as the first four songs. Tropic of Capricorn sounds like something off Balance not something I like. For me this is about 3 1/2 stars, but if you liked the Hagar years in Halen then you should like it a lot more. But even otherwise get it anyway because you don't get many good rock albums like this nowadays and hard rock needs all the support it can get.

4 out of 5 stars Almost up to Van Halen Standards.......2005-10-02

This CD is criminally underrated!!

It starts off really rockin' with "Shaka Doobie" and "Let Sally Drive". "Deeper Kind of Love" and "A Little Bit More" are great softer songs.

"Tropic of Capricorn" is my favorite song on this CD though. "Tropic of Capricorn" is similar to "Cabo Wabo" or "Take Me Back (DejaVu)" from the Van Halen era.

For less than $10, this CD is a STEAL! If you like Sammy's old stuff or Van Halen, this Ten-13 will not dissapoint.

4 out of 5 stars Sammy does it again.......2005-08-08

I live in Australia and am an avid fan of SH (he actually toured here about 7 years ago). However, over the last few years, I've noticed a lack of product at our record stores. Having tracked down his website I discovered this album which was never released here. It's interesting to get an album that is actually "between" others I've heard - it allows you to judge it on its own merits as opposed to comparing it to the last offering.

I reckon this is one of his best, good punchy riffs and his voice is at full stretch - much more consistent than, say, Marching to Mars or Red Voodoo (sorry couldn't help myself).

It rarely let's up and as such is a perfect driving companion.

Can't wait for any new stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Sammy Hagar - The Real Deal.......2003-11-09

This is the best solo album Sammy Hagar has released after the Van Halen era.

The CD opens with "Shaka Doobie"(The Limit), "Let Sally Drive" and "Serious Juju" which are all ROCKIN tracks although "Serious JuJu" is darker and heavier than anything Sammy has ever done.

"The Message", "Deeper Kind of Love" and "Little Bit More" are all strong songs in thier own context but for me "Deeper Kind of Love" stands out from these three as the best ballad type song.

Sammy kicks into party mode with "TEN 13" followed by "Protection" which is probably my least favorite track (if i had to choose one) and "3 In The Middle" is a hard edged track set at a frantic pace.

Sammy has guest Roy Rogers on slide guitar for the bluesy "The Real Deal". "The Tropic of Capricorn" is a free-flowing, "feelgood" song and was a good choice with which to end the CD.

This CD is excellent from start to finish and best played extra LOUD! Listen to this CD and you may discover what I have known for many years.... Sammy Hagar is The Real Deal.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Sammy Hagar solo release.......2007-03-23

THE BAND: Sammy Hagar (vocals, guitar), Eddie Van Halen (bass), Jesse Harms (keyboards), David Lauser (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1987) 10 tracks clocking in at approximately 45 minutes. Included with the disc is a 6-page black/white booklet containing song credits/titles/times, song lyrics, and thank you's. Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, CA. Label - Geffen.

COMMENTS: Hagar had all ready joined Van Halen when this album came out. Since Van Halen's "5150" (from 1986) grabbed so many headlines, I was actually surprised to see this solo Sammy album reach the light of day. Can you say contractual obligation (with Geffen)? No rest for the weary though... Hagar's been a songwriter since the early 70's with Montrose, so kicking out songs comes naturally to the red rocker. I think of solo Hagar material in two eras - the 1st era being the 70's and early/mid 80's; and the 2nd era being the late 80's and after. Hagar has some classics from era-1... "Standing Hampton" (1981), "Three Lock Box" (1983) and "VOA" (1984). This self titled 1987 release (also known to as "I Never Said Goodbye") is the first classic of the later Sammy era. While a very solid album, I still can't help but rank it behind the 3 early classics mentioned above from '81-84. The melodies are front and center here, and the lyrics a distant 2nd. Hagar is not so much into singing about fast cars, women, and rock & roll anymore as much as he now wants to sing about love, relationships and philosophy (and even his family on later albums)... not that there's anything wrong with that (I guess). Sammy is aging, and you can tell by his written words. The album has a few solid rockers - the opener "When The Hammer Falls", and the one rebellious tune "Boys Night Out". A few mid tempo songs - "What They Gonna Say Now", "Returning Home", a Cheap Trick wannabe - "Privacy", and two power ballads that garnered nationwide attention from the FM radio stations - "Give To Live" and "Eagles Fly"... both great tunes. A solid and polished album with many a good song... but not as hard and rocking as his earlier material. Essential - you bet (4.5 stars).

5 out of 5 stars This album has ATTITUDE written all over it.......2005-12-11

This album was originally released without a special title; it was just "Sammy Hagar". It took me years to find this CD, and when I finally did, I snatched it up and locked it away.

This is one of Sammy's very best efforts; "Give to Live" even survived to be re-recorded on a live "Van Halen" album. "Boy's Night Out" is a guys-only anthem that hasn't been heard since "Cruisin' and Boozin'" (from the Red album). Want your spirit to soar? Play "Eagles Fly"; this song will make you feel like a hero. And guys, if you've got a woman you'd crawl through broken glass for, you have to play "Hands and Knees" for her.

Sammy has done many other albums that are as good as this one, but none of them are quite LIKE this one. You have to have this one or you can't call yourself a Hagar fan.

4 out of 5 stars Sammy Hagar Flyin High..........2005-02-26

After recieving my first Sammy Hagar CD, "The Essential Red Collection" for Christmas, I really liked the Red Rocker's sound and style. Then a few days later, I purchased "Ten 13." I got hooked on both albums and knew that my next collection of music would be none other than the collection of The Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar. For my third Hagar CD, I purchased this album, "I Never Said Goodbye." This CD is well organized, contains some excellently written lyrics and has a tremendous sound. Sammy's riffs on this album are phenomenal. Joining Sammy on this album is Eddie Van Halen on bass.

The greatest highlights of this album are these songs:

The opening track, "When The Hammer Falls." This song has excellent lyrics, great heavy riffs provided by Sammy and of course his great vocals, and the drum beats on this song are loud and sound like rolling thunder. The power ballad of the album, "Give To Live" is a heart-warming ballad that is an excellent choice for a wedding song. The lyrics explain that if you want love, you have to give and make sacrifices, as in the title, you have to "Give to Live." The chorus is sung with an amazing power that really gets deep inside your heart. This is one of my favorite ballads of all time.

The next greatest track of the album is "Returning Home." The chorus is sung with a small choir. This song is an excellent example of Sammy's song-writing skills. The next track, "Standin At The Same Old Crossroads" is a short single-guitar jam with Sammy reciting some short vocals. This song does have some pretty good guitar work from the Red Rocker. Very good tune for such a short amount of time. It lasts just under two minutes. Jump a couple tracks to "Back Into You." This is a very catchy song and the chorus is sung wonderfully with a lot of power. Another good example of Sammy's great writing skills. The second ballad of the album is "Eagles Fly." This song has the most lyrics and are very dynamic that makes this song a masterpiece. The song is about traveling to the sky going where only the "Eagles Fly." This is the second-highest point on the album next to "Give To Live."

This is a good, strong solid effort from the Red Rocker. The album overall is good. Half of the album, the songs I didn't mention I feel aren't up the par with the songs I did mention. The highest point on the album is the ballad, "Give To Live." If not for that song, I would have given the album a 3. That ballad holds the under-par songs on their feet in my opinion. For those of you that are looking to buy another Hagar album, I do recommend this album but don't pay a fortune for it. For example, don't go to FYE and pay nearly $20 for it when you could get it on Amazon or the nearest Best Buy (where I got it) for $12. I don't think the album is quite worth the fortune FYE wants.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff from Sammy Halen........2004-07-11

Truth be known, when Sammy joined "Van Halen", it was fine with me. I always really liked him, and I think the two were a good match. In fact, this album really sounds like a "Van Halen" album when you think about it. If you're a fan of "5150" or "OU812", you should easily like "I Never Said Goodbye". However, even though Eddie plays some on here, it's still mostly good ol' Sammy. Not every track is a winner, but "When the Hammer Falls", "Hands And Knees", and "Give To Live" is an excellent start to the album, and "Returning Home" and "Eagles Fly" are good too. Newcomers should probably just get "Unboxed", but this too is a great cd for moments of "Privacy", or for a "Boy's Night Out".

5 out of 5 stars Great, But Not As Much As His Early Work.......2003-08-10

I NEVER SAID GOODBYE is a great record, but it's just not as great as, say, STANDING HAMPTON. The album has some songs that rank with Hagar's best- "Returning Home" has a cautionary message, "Eagles Fly" is highly inspirational, and "Give To Live" has inspired me to leave the front seats when I take the bus to those who really need them. On the other hand, a couple of tracks, like "Boy's Night Out", have no reason for even existing. Overall, this is better than most other hard rock of 1987.

5 out of 5 stars Great 70s Hagar.......2007-06-28

Sammy Hagar may have disowned his 70s solo work, but a quick listen proves that MUSICAL CHAIRS is a great album that deserves wider recognition. Working from roots in Ted Nugent's Detroit rock and the Outlaws' Southern boogie, just like his previous, self-titled debut, this one adds R&B horns on "It's Gonna Be All Right" and a pop ballad, "Try (Try To Fall In Love)" to the mix. However, these changes don't subtract from the music. Rather, they add to it, giving the music a depth lacking in the hard rock that came later from other bands (e.g. Motley Crue, Ratt). Hagar's advocacies of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, increased funding for law enforcement, and capital punishment or life without parole for kidnappers make MUSICAL CHAIRS an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Hagar.......2007-04-15

If you are a fan of Sammy Hagar or you like rare, vintage rock and roll then you need Musical Chairs. This is Hagar at his finest. A must have for any rock and roll collector.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hagar '70s shot.......2000-03-23

I first got this disc back in '89 and still think of it as one of Sammy's best. Chunky guitar rock like it ought to be. Sammy's music has always ranged from the rock anthem to the deep. Whether he's partying the night away with 'Turn up the music' or getting ready for the apocolypse in 'Crack in the world' Sammy's always done it with style and grace. This may not be the style that made Sammy hugely popular, but it is the sound that makes him a true legendary rocker. He may never be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, but he should be.
