5 out of 5 stars Paradigm of Cool Latin Jazz.......2007-05-14

"Close Your Eyes", with the absolutely perfect Jose Chombo Silva on tenor sax, is my personal model for cool Latin Jazz. This kind of sound was every where when I was a little kid in the early 60's. This cut defines sweet melancholy, and man, what a tenor solo!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous!.......2005-08-15

To be fair, and truthful really, you pick any of Tjader's Fantasy releases from the 50's and early 60's and you cannot go wrong. Even his early releases like "Plays Mambo" are absolutely stellar. But after he stole away the team of Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria from Tito Puente, and he obtained Cuban tenor man Jose "Chombo" Silva, he started producing some real absolute gems. This is one of them. Right there with "Blackhawk Nights," "Latin Concert" and even "Ritmos Calientes" this is Tjader at his finest, doing what he did best. It never, and I mean, NEVER, fails to please anyone I play it for, and has even silenced many who might otherwise accuse Tjader for being another gringo trying to rip off what Fania so aptly called, "our Latin thing." But, he solidly proved to anyone who doubts, he has what it takes and, since I mentioned Puente, even Puente was envious of what Tjader could do on the vibes and what he could lay down with his group. When he got Bobo and Mongo from Puente, fughettaboutit.

Get this, get this, get this. You'll kick yourself for waiting this long.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and sophisticated.......2000-09-16

This is one of the best Cal Tjader CDs. The first part in stereo from 1959 is my favorite Tjader album. The quiet pieces have that cool breeze effect on your mood. This is small group jazz at its most intimate. Its a smooth, gorgeous sound they make that will make you feel you're right there at your most relaxed.

5 out of 5 stars excelent.......1999-11-24

cal tjader is one of the most important no latin musician that develop a very hot stile playing latin rhythms.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars good, all things considered.......2007-05-21

If you are an Opeth fan, as I am, you know what to expect from them. Honest, intense, moving, heavy stuff. You will get all of these things from their first release, "Orchid." What you will also get, unfortunately, is a dated sound and an immature approach. Is this a terrible thing? Of course not--this is Mikael Akerfeld's very first studio album, and it shows all the promise that Opeth have come to impress us with.
The vocals have an overwrought reverb on them, the overall theme of the album has an amateurish feel to it--these are things one would expect from a no-name artist of the early 90s. What we don't typically expect, though, is a harbinger of something brilliant, which you will find on this release. Opeth is one of the best, most authentic, heaviest bands you can possibly hope for in this age of immediate gratification, pop sensibility, and, generally speaking, crap. Orchid is a record that, 13 years later, is more well-thought out and crafted than 90% of what you can buy these days. Mikael is a true genius--someone who will never let you down with his ambition and hope--and this album is well worth the purchase price to anyone wishing to hear and understand the full legacy of a band as true to music and beauty as Opeth.

3 out of 5 stars A hint of things to come..........2006-08-23

Opeth's first album runs along the lines of Supertramp's first effort. Not musically, but in the sense that they were a band still sorting themselves out with a lineup that wouldn't make the final cut. As for the music itself, parts of Orchid are brilliant, but they're overshadowed by long moody stretches that seem more like exercises than constructive compositions. All of this would change in future albums of course. With subsequent growth in song writing and bringing the phenomenal rhythm section of Martin Lopez and Martin Mendez on board, Opeth found their potential and continue to explore its limits. If you're looking for a proper introduction to Opeth, Blackwater Park is the album to start with. Eventually it will lead you back here, but then you'll be able to appreciate Orchid's finer points. On a side note, the bonus track, Into the Frost of Winter, is of marginal interest and the poor recording quality detracts from the rest of the album. It would have been better off in a collection of rarities/oddities for the faithful.

5 out of 5 stars Supreme.......2006-08-15

A supreme piece of music from this amazing band. Has a much more shadowy, midieval feel to it, portraying a cold, archaic, beautiful landscape. Production not as lush as subsequent releases, but perfectly suits the mood of the songs. Each song is outstanding, right down to the interludes "Silhouette" and "Requiem". My first Opeth album, a great place to start for fans of any kind of Scandinavian metal. Not a weak point to be found in the entire disc, you cannot be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Personally this is my favorite Opeth CD.......2006-02-08

If you are one of the opeth fans who hate screaming than this one might not be for you. They have definantly evolved over the years since making this one. I on the other hand love the distorted vocals as well as his singing voice. I think that the style of screaming on this cd is better than the type on there later cds. However if you can get past the screaming This is a masterpiece. Making masterieces is nothing new for opeth. It seems like they cant pick up the guitar without making a genious riff. The accoustic sections are also shorter but no less brilliant. The song Forrest in October is so awsome that it is quite possible it might end up being my favorite song of all time. That is if it stands up to the test of time. As with all opeth that I have everytime I listen to them they get better. Some thisngs that are obviously different here are mikaels clean vocals are not as refined as later cd's. For the most part the accoustic breakdowns are shorter, and less frequent than in later albums. The melodies themselves dont feel as progressive. To me they sound more like the melodies of norwegian folk metal. Having said that they are still great. And obviously the production is not as clean as later cd's. This might bother some people. I on the other hand listen to mostly black metal, so I have an appreciation for underproduced sounds. It gives this cd more of a underground metal feel, which they were at the time.
In Mist She Was Standing 9 Opens with the usual steller Opeth riffs. They deliver the first solo about three minutes in. At about the 5:30 mark the first accoustic breakdown eases in. Man is it beautiful. Underneath it a soft serene electric guitar glides to and fro hyptnotizing the listener into a state of bliss. That is my favorite part of this song. After that the usual series of riffs, solo's and accoustics go by.
Under the Weeping Moon 10 This is probably my third favorite song on this cd. At about 3 minutes in the first accoustic breakdown starts. It is very similar to that of the first song except this one has a darker tone. While the first song had more of a serene feel. There are also some strange fluttering sounds that help to dramatize the aptmosphere. All in all this is an excellent song with many memorable parts.
Silhouette 9 A piano instrumental by Anders Nordin the drummer. It is an exquisite piece that winds through my soul everytime I hear it. Somewhat somber, yet beautiful. Its kind of a tease because it would be nice if they would have used this type of stuff more often. Perhaps even mixing it with the accoustics and riffs during the songs. Than again who the hell am I to interfere with the minds of these geniuses.
Forest of October 20/10 This is not only the highlight of the cd, but I think it is the highlight of opeths entire career. Definantly in my top 10 metal songs of all time. I could write an entire page describing in detail each and every riff, solo and melody here. The opening riff is slow and full of emotion. My favorite part of this opus is at 4:50 all the way to the end. It is filled with some of the best riffs, solo's, melodies and even some psychadelia.
Twilight Is My Robe 10 This one opens and closes with godly riffs and melodic guitar. However the heart and soul of this song is the long accoustic section, that has some of Mikael's best singing on this cd. His vocals were'nt as refined this early in opeths career. They are still great and add a soothing feel to this otherwise metal album. His voice is more of a soft low humming compared to the heavenly vocals he would aquire in later releases.
Requiem 6 This low rating in no way cuts down this track. It is some really good accoustic strumming. My problem is that it is rather short, and should have been added to a existing song rather than given its own track.
Apostle in Triumph 10 Picks up where the last one left off. A pretty good accoustic intro. Than there is a lull before the song picks up again. This is probably my second favorite song on here. At 7:25 there is some strange sounding istrument that is really good and gives this song a strange medieval aura. My only complaint with opeth is that I wish they would do more experimenting with different instruments like this. Another example is the celtic sounding melody that appears briefly in "Black Rose Immortal".
Bonus Track Into the Frost of Winter 8 Awsome early opeth. Only listen to this if you appreciate pure cold, grimm, brutality.
Anyways this is an awsome cd that you have to get if you are a fan. Some may just look at this as the cd opeth got their start with. Now I agree that opeth has become more complex over time, yet this one will always hold a special place with me.

4 out of 5 stars Strong Debut Album, But Improvements Come With Time..........2006-01-29

When this hit the metal scene in the early 90's, some were skeptical as to how the band would progress over the years, but this album shows incomparable promise for a group of musicians willing to stretch the limits and challenge themselves. Although their formula continues to evolve and blossom with each album, Orchid gives fans a valuable insight to Opeth's beginnings. Their blending of Gothenburg metal, atmospheric prog rock, and acoustic interludes was just starting here, and it shows that Opeth were still trying to find their own little niche. They did after a while, but this album is still quite good its own.

The first thing that jumped at me from the start of the album were the guitars. Mikael and Peter collaborate beautifully, switching off some truly beautiful lead guitars which seem to resonate off of each other and create a rather autumnal atmosphere. "In the Mist She Was Standing" and "Forest of October" are good examples of this, and feature some of the best solos the band have ever composed. Their displays of virtuosity are jaw-dropping, but not self-indulgent. Another thing that jumped out in particular were three riffs in the opening song that sound quite familiar... Oh yeah, they turn up on Morningrise! You betcha. Two riffs from this song were re-used in "Advent", and another was slightly re-written to be used in "Black Rose Immortal". Screwy, isn't it?

The bass here provides a warm atmosphere, and even a few jazzy moments on its own. (See the beginning of "The Apostle in Triumph" and a mini-solo in "The Twilight Is My Robe".) Anders's drums are basic but fitting, and he throws in some intricate fills to help move along the song to its next section. Mikael uses a gritty, raspy scream here, which is quite different from what he does now, but its rawness aids the album.

Orchid's production is quite similiar to Morningrise. It has a slight reverb to it, and the acoustic guitars seem to shimmer. The guitars used a trebly but thick tone perfect for harmonizations, and the bass has a nice slap to it. Anders' drum sound is amazing, and the double bass gives even the weaker sections some strength. However, the overall sound is somewhat dry and hollow, but maybe that's just the studio.

I reccommend this to someone who is eager to the band's past. It does take a while to absorb everything, and a little fat-trimming on the song structures would have helped a lot. (Let's face it, the songs are almost TOO long, and Opeth never repeat a riff twice in a song.) Some parts a bit disjointed as well. But the songs "Forest of October" and "The Twilight Is My Robe" are among the best songs Opeth have made, and "The Apostle in Triumph" is a total classic. So, prepare yourself, because this album is anything but immediate. It takes repated listens with a good attention span to really get it. But once you get it, you'll love it... Parts of it, anyway.

In a career that's veered from '70s pop chanteuse to Broadway star and neo-operatic diva, Sarah Brightman has brought a critics-be-damned sense of dramatic scale to nearly every project she's tackled. As the title suggests, the tracks here are largely culled from her Songs That Got Away and Surrender song anthologies, although they do include four previously unreleased outtakes from those collections. Her 1998 recording of the title song from ex-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind succeeds by emphasizing its melodic grace with a deft, airy touch, while the remainder rescue worthy songs from obscure or failed musicals. From Lerner and Lane's 1959 Carmelina comes the lovely "One More Walk Around the Garden." Stephen Sondheim's youthful 1954 debut, Saturday Night, yields a sprightly take on "What More Do I Need," while an operatic reading of "In the Mandarin's Orchid Garden," from the Gershwins' unproduced 1929 East Is West, is also included. If the selection leans a little too heavily on the Lloyd Webber connection elsewhere (including Italian versions of "Guardami (With One Look)" from Sunset Boulevard and "Piano (Memory)" from Cats delivered in her patently restraint-free soprano), they're only reminders that shrewdness has hardly been the least of Brightman's talents. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Classy,Romantic, And Stirring........2007-03-09

Encore is the perfect CD for those who love diversity. Classy, Romantic and Stirring. My two favorites are Piano and One More Walk Around The Garden.
Piano (Memory)is even more soul stirring in Italian than the english version. If the english version was perfection she improved upon it. One More Walk Around The Garden is sad and soul stirring bringing a tear to the eye on every play.Sarah sings her way through every song with the voice that earned her the title Angel of Music.Everyone a Gem. A must have for every true fan.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely - Just Lovely!.......2007-01-04

Overall I was very pleased with the content and quality of this CD. Once again, Sarah sings beautifully. I rated this 4 stars instead of 5 simply because, like another reviewer, I, too, felt that it contained too much old material. I used to enjoy 'Memory' but it's been overdone to the point that I cringe when I hear it now. It's sung in Italian here and called 'Piano' but it's still 'Memory'.

I especially liked 'One More Walk Around the Garden' (Carmelina), 'There is More to Love' (Aspects of Love), 'The Last Man in My Life' (Song and Dance) and 'Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta' (La Rondine). 'If I Ever Fall In Love Again' (The Crooked Mile) is especially well done as well.

I do enjoy playing the CD but I find that I pick the songs that I play rather than allowing it to play all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars Encore!.......2005-05-29

The title of the CD is perfect. Sarah has a beautiful and flawless voice and her singing just pulls you in. If you like Sarah Brightman, this is a wonderful CD to add to your collection. I have only started to collect her CDs from concerts she has done and I love every single one of them! BUY THIS!! You won't regret it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2004-12-25

Sarah Brightman sings beautifully. That's not even up for debate. Her choice of material is generally interesting as well. She runs through a wide variety of genre and regularly comes up with excellent pieces from each of them.

`Encore' is a compilation of material recorded between the late 1980's and 2001. It features strong renditions of `Away from You' by Rodgers and Harnick and `In the Mandarin's Garden' by George and Ira Gershwin. The orchestration on `If I ever Fall in Love Again' is a bit overblown but she sings the piece with sincerity, and very well. Her cover of Lane and Lerner's `One More Walk Around the Garden' is a thing of beauty. The same can be said for her handling of Sondheim's `What More Do I Need'. The weakest moment in the set comes during Puccini's `Chi Il Bel Di Doretta'. She sings it well but her voice doesn't quite have the pure power needed for the piece and there are moments where the strain shows.

Sarah Brightman really shines when she sings music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her voice takes on an extra richness. He wrote the music for nine of the fifteen cuts on this release and can be identified as the composer of each one just by the tone her voice takes on when she begins singing any one of them. It's softer, richer, more expressive- it's as if there's an extra facet in her voice and spirit just for his compositions. He produced this collection but I don't believe that was a factor. The same thing struck me when she performed the material from the Phantom of the Opera that appeared on her La Luna concert DVD. `Think of Me' as performed by her was the song that attracted me to her voice even when I was less than sure of the scope of her talent. The recording here is the recording from `Phantom' and it's still stunning. `Piano' is hauntingly beautiful. `The Last Man in My Life' is given a ravishing performance. `Half a Moment' is devastating. The list goes on. There's not a weak cut from among his material. Webber's songs stay with the listener. Their melodic are lush and rich and have enough scope and variety to remain interesting over a long period of time. His orchestration is sumptuous, elaborately textured and a little sweet in the way that touches the listener as a caress. When she sings them they become all they can be. This isn't his music or hers. It's their music.

This is an excellent collection because of the way it showcases this. The material here has been (unkindly) labelled as `ear worms'. To an extent the term is accurate. Show tunes do lean toward catchy and easily accessible melodic lines. Their lyrics are often shallow. What's presented on this collection has more than its share of all of these faults. It's impossible to be cynical about it though. These songs, particularly the numbers penned by Lloyd-Webber, are strong on their own. When they're performed this well, and with this amount of affection, they're captivating. The quality of the sound on the release compliments the material beautifully. It's rich, lush and always crystal clear. Sarah Brightman herself is always a pleasure to listen to. Her voice it has a sparkling quality that's radiantly beautiful. The material on this collection shows that beauty to its fullest.

Listen to her singing these songs and let them wash over you. It's the perfect antidote for cynicism.

5 out of 5 stars Sarah Brightman's Best.......2004-02-17

When I bought this Cd, I knew that I already had much of the music already, but there were a few new songs. I just had to get it for that reason. And I had to get it so that I had more than one recording of Sarah's finest songs. I absolutely love her and feel she was and is the ultimate Christine in "Phantom." I know I would be in a minority. I think she is past that part of her life and could not play the part again, but how I wish I had seen her. I could only imagine. If you have never heard Sarah sing before, this is a perfect CD to introduce her voice. The fact that she can sing so many different styles always amazes me. I suppose I appreciate that since I am a singer myself. I recommend this Cd to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Orchid CD.......2007-05-07

Have been looking for several years for a certain song by Wild Orchid. Finally found on Amazon, but I love the entire CD.

3 out of 5 stars Wild Orchid.......2006-11-20

After seeing Fergie perform on a talk show recently I gave this album a listen to hear how she sounded prior to joining the BEPs. No doubt, as a group they sound terrific especially on the songs where the vocal production is more subtle and features their stellar harmonies like on: SUPERNATURAL, FOLLOW ME, LOVE WILL WAIT, LIFE & I WON'T PLAY THE FOOL. I also love the funky production on MY TAMBOURINE.

The tracks that I dislike the most are those where the lead vocals sound too forced like on AT NIGHT I PRAY & THE RIVER. Overall this is a good debut disc that features songs with deep lyrics but which aren't too catchy or memorable enough to have stood out.

5 out of 5 stars Great talents somehow overlooked.......2006-10-10

Fergie is getting her due (solo on the cover of the latest Rolling Stone!) now. But I hope she appreciates her former bandmates and gives them a chance to revive their careers and ride her coattails. Together, they have great harmonies, as this CD proves. For pop/soul that was marketed to the Spice Girls' crowd, this is great stuff because there's no denying the great voices. It would be great to hear them do "SuperNatural" live or have Fergie re-record it for her next solo CD. As much as Wild Orchid was all over TV -- you can find their videos and live performances on You Tube -- it's amazing they didn't sell well in America.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2006-09-30

I guess I bought this tape back when it first came out. I remember seeing the "Talk to Me" video, and it was great. Considering how amazing all of these songs are, I have no idea why they didn't go further as a group. I know everyone gushes over Fergie, but personally, I think Wild Orchid as a group was way better than Fergie will ever be solo. But I'm buying a CD version of this now just for convenience purposes I suppose. And also, buying more than one copy of this... is not... a waste. Each song is AWESOME. If you are reading this review and even thinking of buying this cd, STOP THINKING!! BUY IT!! I promise you, you will love it.

Oh my gosh, I used to watch Kids Incorporated in reruns with my son. He loved the show when he was 5. I didn't realize how old the show actually was. The girls are all grown up now and wow are they talented. I really like their cover of the GoGo's hit, Our lips are sealed.

5 out of 5 stars totally emotional.......2003-09-12

I love this music, it may be corny but I fell in love over this cd hard!!

5 out of 5 stars They've done it again!.......2003-04-02

This album is great! They have angelic, powerful and very passionate voices! Wow! I would definitely recommend this album to anyone and everyone! These ladies need to get the recognition that they deserve. They are more than just pretty faces, they are magnificent singers! A must have!

2 out of 5 stars They're alright..........2002-01-15

I think they're voices are wonderful, but the songs need some more work on them, don't you think? They need something different to work with. If I was around, maybe they'd really accomplish something.

3 out of 5 stars Not So Good.......2001-11-02

Really the only song I enjoyed on the entire album was "You're No Good (But I Like It)." Though they do have decent singing abilities, they're songs all sound similar and unimpressive. To me, anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Good Previn Great Korngold.......2006-12-23

I was never too enamored with Andre Previn as a film composer or a conductor. However, I found this recording to be rather exhilarating. Previn gives Charles Gerhardt a run for his money with the performances here of Korngold's music. If you have seen the films the recordings take on a new life. I recently viewed "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" and I enjoy those selections even more.

5 out of 5 stars MAGIC FORMULA.......2005-12-17

This disc provides four sets of selections from Korngold's legendary film scores. That suits me for one better than the scores in their entirety, and I like the way the production has been done, with each set of extracts played without intermissions (although there are separate tracks for the individual episodes). Korngold's film music is all about effect so far as I'm concerned, and enough of a good thing is enough, especially when the transitions between the separate extracts are arranged as skilfully and smoothly as they are here. Korngold's style fitted the epics of the 30's and 40's to perfection - it was his natural style, he didn't adapt that as William Alwyn did, and he didn't follow models but was the model himself, starting with Captain Blood in 1935. It was as if someone had invented a glove because he liked the shape of it, and found out that it was perfectly suited to being worn on the hand.

The liner-notes that come with the disc are admirable. Previn contributes a short and lucid introduction giving us his general view of Korngold and of film music. The majority of the material is from the authoritative source of Brendan G. Carroll, providing a more detailed commentary on the four film scores separately. These are given in the chronological order of the films, whereas the scores are not, in case anyone needs to know that. Previn suits me down to the ground as an interpreter of music like this. He had an exceptionally adept touch with scores that are thick-textured and lyrical, something I found many years ago in his Brahms readings, and which you will find in his recording of the German Requiem from 2000, one year prior to the present disc. The way he does it is just right for me, with plenty of body and fullness to it, but showing real mastery in keeping the texture clear at the same time. He and the LSO are long acquainted of course. Their relationship had its stormy episodes, but in my own opinion it was one of the most successful such partnerships in the entire 20th century. There is a sense of consistency here, which might seem unsurprising given that this is Korngold whose idiom is not exactly varied, but it does great credit to the various orchestrators, of whom I count five. Korngold simply was not given time to go through the hard slog of writing out his scores in full, but he knew the kind of sound he wanted and I would guess he supervised his assistants pretty closely.

The recording seems exemplary to me as well. It suits Korngold, it suits the LSO, it suits Previn's special approach. The packaging is a new kind that I was also given by DG for a set of Lutoslawski concertos. It is in soft board, with a fold-over cover forming an envelope containing the liner. Extracting the latter can be like coaxing an unwilling dog out of its kennel sometimes, but I have no objection to this new format. In my filing system this disc will be separated by only one other from my disc of Ketelbey, another composer for the masses during the same era. The two make an interesting contrast. Ketelbey wrote for the radio, specifically for the BBC Light Programme and was listened to by an audience of impoverished British housewives in pinnies as in the film Vera Drake, and by the husbands and sons of these in flat caps. Korngold sang of romantic adventure and - more to the point - of romantic opulence. Where I come from, and for my age-bracket, this is the music of escapism, and it is a pleasure to escape down memory lane again.

5 out of 5 stars Suffocated in marzipan?.......2005-11-05

For anyone too young to remember, Charles Gerhardt single-handedly revived the movie scores of Korngold in the late Sixties with swashbuckling performances on RCA. Korngold wasn't just forgotten--he had been crushed by a famous review that said his serious music needed "less corn and more gold." Gerhardt worked dilligently to bring both serious and popcorn scores back into circulation.

This 2001 CD from Previn and the LSO is about ten shades less luxurious and shmaltzy than those earlier sets. Here Previn aims to keep the sweetness below the saccharine level. Is that even possible? I think he succeeds a lot of hte time, despite the loss of visceral excitement that goes along with it. One big dose of Korngold per lifetime is a great thrill; too much leads to insulin shock.

So, at this stage of life I welcome these less excitable readings (in gorgeous sound) and can enjoy them without feeling that someone is suffocating me in marzipan.

3 out of 5 stars Great Music, but a Mediocre Performance.......2005-11-05

Korngold was indubitably one of the greatest film-score composers in the history of cinema if not the singularly greatest one. Both his innovations in the syntactical procedures involved in the production of film music and his highly individual expressiveness have seeped into the work of nearly all the composers in the genre in the generations since. What Korngold did for the art for which he is best remembered may be likened to what Monteverdi did for the opera or what Haydn did for the symphony. It was thus with great enthusiasm that I greeted the release of this album from the preeminent Andre Previn and the equally illustrious LSO.

While it is already granted that what is being played is both brilliantly constructed and enjoyable to listen to, I was disappointed in the playing itself, especially given the reputations of the players. In this recording, the LSO is uncharacteristically lethargic, and their sound is a bit on the bellowing, turgid side, lacking in an articulation adequate enough to highlight the many breathtaking orchestral details which are typical of Korngold's intricate style. I also find it disconcerting that this recording continues the trend of committing to disc only truncated suites of the scores. If we are ever to appreciate these great pieces of music, one must first play them in their entirety. Two-hour tone poems operatic in their scope cannot be done justice when they are turned into fleeting musical interludes.

5 out of 5 stars Film Scores By Korngold.......2003-05-03

I have been collecting film scores for over fifty years. One
of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's great film scores is for the film
that made President Ronald Regan a major film star "King's Row"
with Claude Rains, Robert Cummings, Ann Sheridan, Charles Coburn
and a host of very fine film actors of the period - 1942. I have
often though that the film could be remade for a new, younger
audience, but no one could duplicate the outstanding film music
composed by Korngold, along with Max Steiner, and Sir Malcom
Arnold, a favourite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Mickey Rourke is such a great singer........2005-07-08

I bought this album because my friend told me Mickey Rourke sang all the songs on it. Wow, what a talented individual he is. I mean, he boxes, he acts, he tap dances, he cross-dresses, he teaches flute lessons, performs ballet and now he sings. Man he's great. I wish I was Mickey Rourke so I could sing, too.

I recommend this CD to people who like listening to Mickey Rourke's voice or like music. If you don't like Mickey Rourke's voice and/or you don't like music...well, you're weird, no one loves you - go home.

2 out of 5 stars Where Is That Song!?!?.......2004-12-30

Why isn't the song where Carre Otis is arriving in Rio on the album? Thats the best song in the movie! Also, where is the song that is heard when Otis and Rourke go to that masquerade club!? The rest of the songs stink.

3 out of 5 stars What song is in the "flying to rio" scene?.......2004-12-13

The best song in the entire movie is when Carrie is flying to Rio...its beautiful...it would make this album amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A Personal Favorite.......2004-07-14

As a film, WILD ORCHID is only so-so; as a soundtrack, however, it is easily among the best of its decade, a brilliant collage of Latin American, alternative, hard rock, and elegant pop. It has long been one of my favorites, and if your taste runs to all of the above, it will like become one of yours as well.

The opening titles cut, the instrumental "Paradise," is languid, sultry, sexy and features a flawless trumpet lead--but the treats have just begun: Maragreth Menezes' "Elejibo" and David Rudder's "Dark Secrets" set a high standard when it comes to sharp-edged, vigorious Latin sounds, and although the various cuts are very, very ecclectic in style each one is beautifully, flawlessly performed, all the way from Nasa's hard rocking but strangely spiritual "Magic Jeweled Limousine" to my own personal favorite, the darkly cynical "Promised Land" by Underworld.

This is truly an inexhaustible recording, always seductive, alternating high energy edges with introspection, every cut memorable. Strongly recommended.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer

3 out of 5 stars OK...but where is that one song??.......2003-05-08

This soundtrack is ok, but where is the one, really incredible song that is playing while she is arriving in Rio? And what is it called? Having this song on the album would make it complete.

Album Description

More exquisite Chinese lute music from pipa virtuoso, Shao Rong. In this, her second album for Pacific Moon, Ms. Rong again beckons us to linger in her vibrant and exotic world.

More than 2,000 years old, the pipa is one of the older musical instruments in the world that is still played. Shao Rong stretches the musical bounderies with her playing, mixing traditional and contemporary elements, and transforming the conventional image of this instrument.

She is an acclaimed master of this ancient instrument, and has performed as a soloist with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Sapporo Symphony, among many others. She was also personally selected by renowned composer Tan Dun to perform the world premier of his "Concerto for Pipa and String Orchestra" at the Pan Pacific Music Festival.

To enhance your enjoyment of the music, fragrant incense sticks are included in the spine of the CD jewel case.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful collection of music!.......2005-06-12

I first heard the song, "A Song of Lilies" on the DirecTV "Soundscapes" channel. Each time I heard it, I found myself wanting to hear it more and more. As most people, I thought the special music was provided by a mandolin...when it was, in fact, a Chinese Lute. Shao Rong is a master with this instrument. This entire CD - which includes 2 incense sticks that give it a heavenly smell when opened - is a pleasure to listen to. Each night before turning in, I listen to "A Song of Lilies." It has become the perfect way to end a hectic day. If you like unique and intriguing new age music, this is a "must buy."

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice!!!!.......2004-11-30

I ordered this c.d. as well as orchid from Amazon after going to the special Chinese exhibit at Chicago's Field Museum, they were playing this in the gift shop, but were sold out. I'm not surprised! The sound quality and music itself is just beautiful. Put this on shuffle play while you're working and it will calm even the most stressful workday. I'm not crazy about the sometimes shrillness or (seeming)redundancy of Asian music which I'm sure is my own shortfall in music appreciation; but I am trying to expand my musical horizons and appreciate this on its merits and own intrinsic beauty. For something not too "over the top" I highly recommend either/both of these c.d.'s wholeheartedly. The incense included in the spines of the c.d.'s was also a nice touch

4 out of 5 stars The Well Tempered Pipa with voice added.......2004-04-28

Shao Rong returns with her wonderful pipa (Chinese Lute) and this time showing off her vocal talents as well.

Shao Rong is a multi talented and exceptional artist, long praised by her homeland as a child prodigy and an award winning artist.

This CD is more of a blend of Chinese elements with a distinct western feel to many of the compositions. The pipa sets the mood, but the music is sometimes `tropical' in feel, other times it has a jazz elements. The CD however, does not feel jumpy as it flows gracefully from style to style, and gives us an overall feel for the talents of this young lady.

Many of the songs are light and upbeat with a few cuts that can only be described as `romance with an Oriental touch'.

Ms. Rong also graces us with her vocal abilities on two tracks. `Milky Way' gives us a much stronger Chinese connection with her soft, light traditional vocals. While the words are Chinese, the booklet included in my CD does give the translation. `Dreaming', also highlights Ms. Rong's pleasant and subtle vocal ability. The music is performed well, accenting Ms. Rong's voice and never overpowering it.

Outstanding tracks on this CD are: `Tropical Island'; a bright tune reminiscent of tropical Pacific Islands with its swaying rhythm and its light, breezy feel.

`Orchid' combines the pipa with classical violins, having an almost chamber music quality with an oriental flavor that is most delightful and brightens up the somberness of the violins.

`Early Spring' is pipa accompanied by piano, a delightful combination we heard in her first CD and is offered again for our enjoyment. This composition is soft, pleasant and inviting for contemplation.

If you enjoyed Ms. Rong's first CD `Orchid' this offering will not disappoint you. This is a very wonderful reprise to her first CD. mafoster

The pipa is a four-stringed lute that immediately signals its Asian origins with microtonal scales and note bends. Shao Rong, a Chinese musician living in Japan, makes the most of these characteristics on Orchid. Born in Shanghai, China, Rong is a classically trained musician whose forte has been folk music and new classical music, including the compositions of Tan Dun. On Orchid, producer Seiichi Kyoda places Rong in a more contemporary music setting. A member of the world fusion group Uttara-Kuru, Kyoda wrote all the music and arrangements on Orchid, and he shows a penchant for light melodies and breezy arrangements that heighten the pipa's natural tendency toward sweetness, especially when Rong affects a mandolin-like tremelo. Kyoda surrounds her with ghuzeng zithers, tizi, and shakuhachi flutes, and the erhu, a Chinese violin played by Jia Peng Fang. Kyoda also works some darker tones on the electro-tabla driven grooves of "Precious Moon," a reconfiguration of a traditional song, and the dynamic "One More Tale." The latter piece centers on a piano ostinato phrase that lays the road for a cinematic journey into the night. --John Diliberto

I searched for this CD because I had heard one compelling song on the radio, Bamboo Dance. What a delight to be able to hear more of this talented artist's work. A combination of eastern and western instruments that result in beautiful calming music. I also purchased Orchid II which is equal to the original.

I put on the CDs, light a few candles (or the inscense included with them, grab a book and relax at the end of a stress filled day. Heaven.

LISTENING TO "ORCHID" AND "ORCHID 2" MOTIVATED CERTAIN WORDS INTO MY CONSCIOUSNESS: SERENITY, ADORATION, VENERATION, SWEETNESS, AFFECTION, AESTHETICS AND THE IDEA THAT LOVE MIGHT EXIST. BUT AS MILES DAVIS ONCE SAID "ITS THE WAY THE MUSIC MAKES YOU FEEL". ONE NO LONGER NEEDS TO JOG FOR AN OUTPOURING OF ENDORPHINS AND TRANQUILITY. SHAO, IN A MOST REFINE MODE FREES THE TIME; JUST THIS ONENESS WITH ALL WHO BELIEVE IN COEXISTENCE. TO HEAR THIS MUSIC IS TO BELIEVE-ITS REAL.
