    Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was never between my favourite singers but I have to admit that she is really a respectable artist and this lovely cd proves how versatile she is and how she managed to keep a fresh and mellow tone even in her fifties. She is really at her best in the extracts from Citizen Kane and the operetta The Enchanteress. It's a pity that no Verdi music is included in the program, Kiri Te Kanawa was a great Amelia (Simon Boccanegra) and a moving Desdemona. A very fine Dame Kiri indeed.

    OK. I'm going to go out on a limb here. This is, IMHO, Dame Kiri's finest recorded performance.

    I know that's taking in a whole lot of territory, but there is something simply magical, and magisterial, about her singing here.

    Yes, I know "perfection" is that illusive impossibility to be sought but never achieved. However, on this night I think Dame Kiri did achieve perfection.

    Simply a glorious life affirming performance by one of the great singing artists of the last fifty years.

    Kiri's exquisite voice and expansive repertoire make for an unbeatable combination which reaches its crescendo on this special evening. A full symphony orchestra, two choruses, a jazz trio, and even a tenor (!) help Kiri in celebrating her 50th birthday. (That's her chronological age, the voice is timeless.) The hall's accoustics are excellent and orchestra and audience support without intruding. One of the reasons why I love Kiri's singing is that I believe she sings the songs the way the composer wanted them to be sung without the sometimes annoying embellishments employed by others. Kiri includes songs sung in her ancestral Maori in a program that takes the listener from the opera house to Broadway and then to an intimate jazz club. I love live concerts because I feel most artists are at their best before a live audience and this cd is proof. I don't believe that there is another artist recording today that has covered such a wide range of song styles and done it with such beauty and skill. This disc is confirmation. If you only buy one Kiri cd, make it this one. But don't be surprised if you start buying many more!

    The first time I ever heard the voice of Kiri Te Kanawa was on a recording of Salaambo's aria from CITIZEN KANE for the RCA film classics series on vinyl. It was one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever composed by Bernard Herrmann. It was Kiri Te Kanawa performance of this piece that was so incredible. I had seen the film several times, but to hear a high fidelity recording of Kiri Te Kanawa on this particular piece really demonstrated not only the raw talent but also a depth of intuitive emotion that she brought to Herrmann's composition. Anyone that could interpret the inner struggle behind Herrmann's music so precisely demonstrated an uncommon ability to become one with the music. I still can't pronounce her name correctly but Kiri Te Kanawa is the epitome of a well-honed talent. She is a gift to us all. This CD is very welcome.

    What a truly breathtaking concert! Kiri is obviously one of the top three divas to surface over the past fifty years!

    Her technique is spotless, her tonality marvelous, and her intonation superb! For those worried about Kiri's "maturing" sound; age has brought a "different" soprano, but one just as lovely as ever...

    The selection of music was fabulous, such a variety brings about an interesting and lively effect...

    Kiri's Greatest Hits Live!, was truly a wonderful addition to my collection...I would recommend it to any opera fan!

      This the review that I wrote for OperaOnline.us: There is only one word to describe this compilation of varied works by soprano Kiri Te Kinawa: Elegant! From the cover to the selection of songs inside, to the way each selection contributes to and results in a perfect blend of orchestra and singer, nothing is out of place. I usually prefer CDs that are thematic and carry a mood throughout, and this offering by DECCA, bless them, will not disappoint those who share my sensitivity to mood. It doesn't hurt either that Kinawa's voice radiates control and smoothness that sweeps one up in defiance of gravity to a place somewhere betyween awe and gratitude, but that is exactly what occurs here. You listen to the melodic expressiveness of Beim Schlafengehen with the Wiener Philharmoniker and think it can't get any better, and then find it followed by Ave Maria with the Utah Symphony, followed by Pie Jesu with the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal, and it does get better. The chorals are pretty impressive as well, as in Nuns' Chorus and Climb Every Mountain. Consistently Kinawa's voice soothes and never presses even close to the edges of shrill. She is a soprano with depth and a cultured delivery that wraps every note in any range with the delicacy of a mother's loving embrace. It just doesn't get any better than this. Give this CD to someone you love, they'll appreciate it, with this one caveat: the second of the two disks is less moody and a little uneven in mood. Hold the second disc back.

              First, let's not kid ourselves about the subject at hand. If you're looking for something that doesn't seethe and loathe while it writhes into your mind, you're probably looking in the wrong place. Velvet Acid Christ doesn't produce sounds that you can tuck your children in with, nor do they manufacture that plastic aroma that entices your lover into loving. In a world drowning in pop ballads and sugarcoated bubblegum rock they are something dark and brooding, screaming "I will kill you" and "I suffer" and "I overload on things you've never dreamed," making it all - real. Instead of the numbing drone we hear all the time that says "we're all fine," VAC creates an ambience that truly denotes the depression and the brutality that the radio leaves off its "boy meets girl" plateau. They ask you to taste the pain, to feel the terror, and to know that there are people out there that want to see what your insides look like. You can dance to their songs, too, moving to the voxed lyrics as they stream demands, and that's even better because it underscores the fact that their songs are enriched by the drug subcultures that birthed them. They even note that in album liners and in their songs, saying that years were spent trying to manufacture things "under the influence," and that sometimes something ghastly comes out.
              And, of all their efforts, Calling Ov The Dead is one of Velvet Acid Christ's shining stars.

              Normally I single out songs and deconstruct albums because of the flaws within, but this album is harder to do that with because I like so many songs on it. The first time I listened to it I was taken by that fact, noting that it was bleak enough to cuddle with and that it was also a continuous audio stream. Looking back I notice that the sound wasn't mastered to some crisp form of perfection, and later re-releases (Between the Eyes Volumes 1-4) manage to capture the vocals and the sounds and showcase that fact all too well. Still, this was something that angrily exclaimed what it wanted and I loved that about it. I remember everyone I knew talking about the stark contrast within the shadows the album was painting, with songs like The Dead and "Exquisite Stench" dripping with violence and songs like "Timeless Visions" almost somberly dictating that this disease was our own creation. And I liked that. I still do.

              Personally I find Calling of the Dead enriching and would tell anyone into EBM/Darkwave to obtain it if they hadn't, but that might not be true for everyone. A person that wants to delve into VAC for the first time might want to (a) sample songs readily available on Metropolis records and then (b) think about picking up Between the Eyes 1-4, wanting remastering and all the songs in the same stroke. These releases cover Calling Ov the Dead and Church of Acid, plus a lot of ground that was left sitting by the wayside. Still, that doesn't mean that this album shouldn't be obtained. I suppose it all depends on how you look at it, really, and if you like intact albums or pieces of albums flowing separately into a whole. When Between the Eyes was manufactured it didn't do the same thing that the aforementioned albums did, not moving in exactly the same fashion, and that changes things. So, its like having a mix tape versus the each album. Regardless, Calling ov the Dead is one of the things that pushed VAC into the limelight, and is worth gravitating toward. Even aged, it seethes.

              If you're new to Velvet Acid Christ, this would be the album to check out first. Some amazing songs from a great industrial band. Being a big Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly fan, I was looking for some new music awhile ago to broaden my collection. Found VAC, and they haven't let me down yet. The samples are superb (and from great movies as well. 12 Monkeys, Event Horizon, etc), the songs are cohesive and mind-numbingly delicious, and the vocals are always nice and distorted. I highly recommend this album.

              Just like all of VAC's albums this one is sure to please any EBM / industrial fan. Calling Ov has a harder sound than later VAC releases which, to me, makes this CD not as danceable than Fun With Knives or Twisted Thought Generator. If you like your EBM or industrial hard- then Calling Ov has what you're looking for. This CD makes great use of samples as well (particularly from the movie se7en).
