4 out of 5 stars Even better than their debut!.......2007-05-07

Released in 1991, Baton Rouge's second album Lights Out on the Playground is another in a long list of albums that deserved far more attention that it received at the time.

Coming at a time when the charts were dominated by Bon Jovi, Warrant, Steelheart, Slaughter, Damn Yankees and the like, Lights Out on the Playground should have been Baton Rouge's big break. It certainly had all of the right elements. It was a very melodic hard rock album with a definite blues flavor; it featured a dynamic vocalist in Kelly Keeling, and it boasted behind-the-scenes support by former Surgin' mainman Jack Ponti, whose songwriting skills were among the best in the business. His song "Desperate" is one of the best metal ballads ever written, and I'm still perplexed as to how neither Baton Rouge nor Babylon A.D could make a hit of it.

Lights Out on the Playground may not have reached a wide audience, but it was still a terrific hard rock album. It may seem dated now, but for those of us who grew up with this kind of "hair metal", this is the kind of music that gets the blood pumping. If you're already a Baton Rouge fan, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't heard Baton Rouge yet, but are a fan of the late 80's and early 90's hard rock sound, you'll definitely want to check out Lights Out on the Playground.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Minutes of brilliance..........2006-07-08

Baton Rouge should have been HUGE; I was around when they came out and I couldn't believe they weren't big. The songs are well written - think Bon Jovi with more balls. Great hooks, melody and sing along choruses - Kelly Keeling sings his guts out on this album and Shake Your Soul. Lance Bulen is a solid, not flashy, player.
Lights Out On The Playground has 20 minutes of some of the best hard rock/metal you will hear. Desperate, Tokyo Time, Vampire Kiss, The Midge II and The Price Of Love are all fabulous rock n roll. These songs hit every thing great about rock in the 80's/Early 90's. If you like anything about music in this era - BUY THIS!
This album doesn't bring anything new to the table - it simply ROCKS.

5 out of 5 stars Why is everything that I want so hard to find?.......2006-02-04

I would like to know why everything that I want is so hard to find- Firehouse, Poison, Warrant, Slaughter, Baton Rouge, Vain, XYZ, Mitch Malloy, Del Amitri and Bulletboys- these are some of the artists that are hard to find.

Lights out on the playground is a great album and worth buying- but I won't buy it used. I'd sooner buy it brand new and for the retail price of $16.99.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than The Rest (Part II) ..........2006-01-28

"Lights Out On The Playground" is more proof that Baton Rouge should have been a bigger success than they were. This follow-up to "Shake Your Soul" is not a carbon copy but rather a continuation of the excellence Baton Rouge established on their debut album. It has a more mature (experienced, if you prefer) feel to it and the songs all sound as if they are coming from a well-established super group with a string of gold albums to their credit.

You know you are in for some serious rock `n' roll when Baton Rouge launches into the opening cut, "Slave To The Rhythm" but it is the slower songs on this disc that I really appreciate. The vocal performances by Kelly Keeling on "Desperate" and "Hotter Than Hell" never fail to get my full attention. Both are slower paced but whereas "Desperate" has that soulful, yearning feel "Hotter Than Hell" is a slow-burning blues number that leaves me wanting more. I'm sure that it is no coincidence that "Hotter Than Hell" just happens to be the 12th and final song on this 50 minute disc.

It is difficult to choose any one song as the best of the bunch because "Lights Out On The Playground" has plenty of quality tracks to pick from. So, to borrow (loosely) from the lyrics of "Vampire Kiss", don't be surprised if "Lights Out On The Playground" "makes you electric", "sets you on fire", "rattles your bones" as it "takes you wire to wire".

4 out of 5 stars baton rouge can really rock!!!.......2004-02-02

...well, what can I say about this great record? an all time favourite and a must have for all fans of 80's rock n' roll.
all the songs in this cd really "bang!" on your head and remain for a long time finding you gingin along.
just buy it! nothing less nothing more!

4 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem.......2007-05-29

This is a great CD for fans of 80s hard rock or hair metal...
there is strong songwriting throughout and the production and performance are top notch

I'm not sure why they never hit big but they certainly should have
this CD sounds like a mix of Danger Danger,Loverboy,Bad English,Bad Company and even at times Whitesnake
this is one of the rare CDs that includes several songs that I enjoy listening to over and over and one song 'Baby's So Cool' is one of my very favorite hard rock songs of all time and made it's way into regular rotation on my internet radio show!

the upside:great songwriting,production and performance,the best songs are 'Baby's So Cool','Doctor','Walks Like A Woman','It's About Time','Bad Time Comin' Down','Melenie','There Was A Time'

the downside:there are a few filler songs...but out of 12 songs I'd say only 2 are filler and that's definitely not bad at all

the bottom line: this is a great CD for fans of 80s style hard rock...recommended for fans of Poison,Danger Danger,Loverboy,Bad English and even Christian rock band X'Terra's CD 'Wolves' Baton Rouge Shake Your Soul is well worth looking for...donutman says so!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, but Lights Out On... is better.......2006-07-08

This album is very solid and; This was the Baton Rouge Album that GOT airplay. Lights Out On The Playground got NO airplay. Walk Like A Woman was a minor hit and made you think more was to come.
These guys are straight ahead rock, with great hooks and BIG choruses on each song. This album is NOT as good as "Lights Out", but it has it's moments. Doctor, It's About Time, Bad Time Comin Down and There Was A Time(The Storm) are all excellent.
Kelly Keeling can sing... he has worked with Michael Schenker recently and that should tell you something.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than The Rest ..........2006-01-28

My musical tastes are firmly rooted in the classic rock era (the sounds of my youth) so it may seem odd to some that I am offering an opinion on a band that comes out of the hair metal/MTV rock era. Or perhaps it isn't so surprising after all since there are many people out there who understand that good music is timeless and that it lives on to influence more good music over and over again. The period of time when Baton Rouge released their debut album certainly put that belief to the test. The popularity of music videos had unleashed "made-for-tv" musicians by the score. There were still good bands out there that made music their primary focus but you had to work hard to find them. I was fortunate to have a good friend who was more than happy to help me with this task (Thanks Bryan !!!). It was at his insistence that I purchased a copy of Baton Rouge's 1990 release "Shake Your Soul". I immediately realized that I had found another link in the chain of timeless good music.

"Shake Your Soul" is an outstanding effort by a band that should have been at the top of its class. Kelly Keeling has an excellent voice (check out his solo work as well as he has worked with Alice Cooper, Blue Murder, Michael Schenker, John Norum, Don Dokken, Carmine Appice/Guitar Zeus, and many other notable artists) and Lance Bulen's guitar work is superb. The band is tight and the production is solid. As for the music itself, it ROCKS. There is a good mix of hard rock ("Doctor", "Big Trouble", "Bad Time Comin' Down" , "Hot Blood Movin'", "Baby's So Cool"), heavy groove ("Walks Like A Woman", "Spread Like Fire"), power ballads ("It's About Time", "There Was A Time"), and , for lack of a better term, in-betweeners ("Young Hearts", "Melenie"). No wasted space on this one.

"Shake Your Soul" continues to be on my play list after all these years. So here is a challenge to those of you out there who consider yourselves to be experts on this genre: compare the music on "Shake Your Soul" against that which you hold to be the best of the genre and see how it measures up. Once you do, you may find yourself adding Baton Rouge to the top of the list.

5 out of 5 stars A Real rockin' classic!.......2005-09-10

If you were a fan of the hair bands of the 80's do not pass this one up. I happened across this in a bargin bin in 1996 and I have to tell you that all the songs on this CD are good. I may pass up the ballads like "It's about time" at times but over all it is about the only cd I own that is enjoyable from start to finish. My personal favorite is "Burn Like Fire" which is the last song on the CD. I am still puzzled why this CD didnt get alot of air play. There are lots of heavy riffs and power ballads to fill just about every rockers taste. It is now a real rare cd to find so pick this one up! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

3 out of 5 stars A solid debut album.......2005-06-08

Kenny Neal's debut LP, originally released in 1987 on King Snake Records, is not the most distinctive of his Alligator albums. But you really can't go wrong with anything Neal has put out, and while "Big News From Baton Rouge" doesn't reach the level of later releases like "Devil Child" and "Hoodoo Moon", it is far from being a bad record.

The opener, "Outside Looking In", is probably the best song on the disc, a swaggering, horn-driven number, and other highlights include "Cost Of Living" (which also features a nice guitar solo), the acoustic country blues rendition of "Early One Morning", and the slow grind of "Caught Your Back Door Man" and the soulful "Baby Bee".
I know that some people dislike the idea of a horn section on a blues album, and I'm not that fond of it either. But the small, punchy horn sections which often back Kenny Neal on his Alligator albums are generally well scored, and they never overwhelm either his singing or his playing.

Kenny Neal plays some excellent harmonica and a few gritty guitar riffs on "Big News", although his guitar playing is not as prominent as on most of his other albums. His rough but flexible voice is a major asset, and the fact that he writes or co-writes the vast majority of his own songs makes him a rare and valuable bird these days.
Neal's songwriting on "Big News" is not his very best, though, and this is not the place to start if you're a newcomer. But there are certainly enough tasty bits to make it worthwhile, and fans will want this album - and everything else Raful Neal's son has ever recorded - in their collection.

KENNY NEAL
Big News from Baton Rouge!!
Alligator ALCD4764

Looking to return to an era that spawned a generation of young blues musicians like Lucky Peterson, Lurrie Bell, Billy Branch, and Kenny Neal? Neal was approximately 30 years old when Big News From Baton Rouge!! was first released on Bob Greenlee's King Snake Records. A little while later, the album came to the attention of Bruce Iglauer. After adding three tracks, and remixing the LP, Iglauer re-released it on his Alligator Records label, and Kenny Neal's career was jump-started. The chief contributor to the album's success appears to be Greenlee. He co-wrote six of the 10 songs and co-produced the record. There are many similarities with this disc and Peterson's debut. Both were recorded at King Snake Studios, feature Greenlee as producer, songwriter, and bass player, and include many of the same session musicians.

When it comes to the blues, Neal didn't spend much time on the outside looking in, as reflected in the autobiographical "Bio On The Bayou". Ironically, "Outside Looking In" is the lead-off track on this 40-minute debut from 1988. Like Peterson, Kenny Neal is a triple threat with flamboyant guitar, full-throttle harp, and charismatic vocals. For someone who was young (at the time of this recording), Neal's vocals are full, deep, and rich. He wisely arranges the songs to showcase these qualities. The opening number is hip, funky, and groovy. Listen as the punchy horns and swaying keyboards push Neal to new heights. This remains one of my all-time favorite Kenny Neal tunes. "Don't Dip In My Business" is a rockin' boogie with a Texas Tijuana twist, courtesy of the swinging horns. The song was influenced lyrically by "T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness" and musically by Neal's time spent with Canada's Downchild Blues Band. More Downchild impressions are found on "Loretta". You'd swear Bobby Rush is performing "Evalina" in front of a down-home chitlin' circuit crowd. Here, the funky bass and drums have more heat than a Caribbean calypso fire dance. Throughout, Peterson and Kenny Burch's explosive keyboards get more than noticed.

Relative to other Kenny Neal CDs, this one is typical. Neal would mature to improved releases. However, this disc is a crucial part of his career, since it reveals what all the hype was about. You'll instantly sense that competitive edge which makes Neal credible and likeable across the genres. This debut is a clear indication that Kenny Neal was a major find, and would become a strong force on the blues scene. On "Is It All Right?" Neal sums it up: ("its my turn / I'm ready to burn").

5 out of 5 stars Larry Garner's strength is his storytelling.......2003-06-26

Larry's blues stand out because he knows how to construct a story around an experience he's had, and wrap it up as a tasty blues song. 'Jook Joint Woman' is a good example, which describes the antics of 'a fun-loving' fan at one of his live shows. 'Shut it down' (on the double dues album) is another good example, which begins with his kid having a bad day at school, and ends up with Larry getting quite philosophical about life. Larry also knows how to play guitar to great effect, sometimes reminiscent in style to fellow Louisiana bluesman Buddy Guy. Presented here are original and sometimes hilarious blues songs. This album is an appetizer for catching this fine entertainer live for a GREAT night out.

    5 out of 5 stars Nothing Fancy-Just solid blues.......2001-11-16

I have been a serious blues fan since 1967 when I first heard an Otis Spann and then a Paul Butterfield album. For the past 34 years I have listened to thousands of blues recordings. However, over the past few years, I have been unable to locate hardly any musician who caught my ear. I thought I had heard it all and was just jaded. I bought the Larry Garner CD because it was on sale, basically. After listening to it a few times, I decided that it was prety good-nothing spectacular. However, it sneakily became the one Cd that I have listened to more than anything else I own.
Mr. Garner is a true bluesman in an age of several teenage, and/or pseudo musicians who play flashy, soulless blues. Garner is a solid guitarist who knows WHAT notes to hit, and even more importantly, when not to play. His singing is smooth and well phrased, too. Perhaps the best feature of this album is his ability to breathe life into standard blues progressions. The man can play--period.

    5 out of 5 stars Storyteller extraordinaire!.......2001-10-12

Although I also have Larry's "Once Upon the Blues" in my CD collection, "Baton Rouge" remains my favorite of the two. His lyrics are atypical of most blues material heard today. Larry shares his insights and rich experiences with us in a refreshing and humorous fashion. Not only do I enjoy listening to his recordings, but he far surpasses even these when performing live. As a seasoned and frequent festival goer I have been fortunate to catch Larry & the band four times this year! Witty, insightful lyrics make this CD a must-have!

    4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2000-11-18

I just keep playing this CD over and over. He has a voice that can be best described as real. It ain't polished but what great blues man counts on polish? The track "High on Music" is one of my all-time favorite tunes. It has a reggae-blues riff and great volcal delivery by Garner that makes it infectious. The CD mixes classic slow and dirty blues tunes like, "BLues play my Way," and "New Bad Habit" and adds in great uptempo tunes like "Baton Rouge" and Help Yourself" that will have your feet tapping and you cranking up the volume. And there is even a catchy country-style lyrical tune 'Have's and the Have Nots" that show off his great song-writing. I love it.

It's not quite like anything I've every heard before - gruff vocals, guitars and mandolins combined with eerie, spacey fiddle playing heavy on the reverb - maybe if Johnny Cash had recorded an album with Sigur Ros... Terrific songwriting, too. It'll get in your head, that's for sure.

I love it.

    5 out of 5 stars Fess Rules.......2000-09-29

Although this CD has some overlap with other 'fess CDs it is still worth a listen plus you get several classics not found elsewhere. Seems like the good Professor had about a dozen standards and it seems like at 6 of the them show up on every CD. This CD revolves around the standards that substained him through the lean years. Not a bad choice for the first time listener, although Gumbo and Crawfish Fiesta are my personal favorites.

The sound quality of every track is outstanding. I am very impressed with all of the Rhino CD's on that point. This is a real studio album and the sound quality reflects that.

    I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good Crawfish Boil Music.......2000-06-26

This is a great CD to play at a cookout or crawfish boil; mostly high-energy 'Fess tunes, all with a beat you can step to. Kind of a 'greatest hits' albulm. You can't lay down and die before you've heard 'Jambalaya', lest you want to live eternity in regret.
