Customer Reviews:
Lacks structure.......2006-08-30
The first Kotipelto album was good, but this one isn't really as creative. Although there are some very talented Guest Musicians here, such as Michael Romeo and Janne Wirman, the songwriting is rather weak. The first two songs are great, but then, nothing new really, there aren't any interesting instrumental parts, I must say the only thing that kept this album from completely bombing was the fact that Kotipelto's voice is of course very good (maybe the fact that the album isn't that long either).
If you enjoyed the last half of Kotipelto's first solo album, Waiting for the Dawn, you'll like this. Same applies if you really like Koti's voice. But if you are into prog, or looking for something interesting musically, this album will disappoint.
A beefier second helping of Kotipelto.......2006-01-11
After the musically so-so first album Kotipelto has taken a big stride forwards. 'Reason' the first single, is a catchy and quality song. I actually noticed this track first, entirely skipping the rather tasty lead cut on this disc. Hear it for yourself and make sure you read the lyrics which are a little harder hitting than you might of expected.
The rest of the album doesn't stay at this level but there are a number of cool tunes and he has made far more use of the musicians in his band. Any third album will hopefully follow this trajectory because this is a guy who loves his rock and metal and doesn't resort to stupid gimmicks to get your attention, just a good - and still maturing - voice.
Another solid outing.......2004-10-16
Having purchased and enjoyed the first Kotipelto cd, I was very much looking forward to the release of this one. I am also very happy that Kotipelto has maintained a similar approach and improved on it. There is some great stuff here. Being a huge Symphony X fan, I certainly appreciate Michael Romeo's bigger role here; it is obvious that Timo was quite impressed after the first one. He doesn't turn in any solos or rhythm work that dwarf his work in his own band, but you get some rather unorthodox playing from him. Generally his playing isn't as fast or as heavy, but he has some great, almost jazzy moments at time. He does some blazing, incredibly articulate runs here and there though that remind you that he is one of the best guitarists in the business. The other guitarists turn in some good stuff as well, and the keyboard solos are excellent. Timo is one of the few "helium" singers I like as he generally seems to put more emotion into that high range than many other vocalists like him. Highly recommended for Stratovarius and Symphony X fans or fans of good power metal.
A Great Solo Follow-up! .......2004-09-27
In all actuality, both of Timo's solo albums are not extensions of Stratovarius (unintentionally or otherwise) and this is a very good thing. Like its predecessor, "Coldness" does not get bogged down in excessively long songs (like some recent Strato kind of does) and he makes much better use of his voice on his own projects by only singing in the upper reaches of his rather impressive range sparingly and then mostly in the background. In comparison to his first solo effort, this one is quite personal and a little bit dark, as evidenced by the beautiful cover art and photos inside. However, like the first one, Timo has most of the same talented guys backing him up and once again, there are no bad songs to skip over. In fact, I would recommend the import version with the bonus track "Secret Name" which I have, if you can find it for a decent price because it really should have been on the album anyway. Keep up the great work, Timo!
Strato lives on...Sort of.......2004-06-22
While Stratovarius is still trying to make an existnecve with some sort of female vocalist (wow, they're really changing huh?) The Stratovarius we all knew and loved can still live on with Kotipelto, the solo band by Timo Kotipelto. There isn't really much difference between this band and Stratovarius, with the exception of the name. It's still the same prog power metal and Timo's soaring higher vocals that sort of remind me of rush. If you liked Strat, you'll like this.
